Kudos to him for wanting to improve his personal style and for you in helping him to do so! Here's my take:

• The polo/khaki chinos look has pretty much been bastardized by the workforce as some sort of semi-acceptable business-casual getup, hence the dorky vibe that you get from it (stripy patterns really don't help either). That said, it's doable with an outerwear layer (#16, #17, #38 look much better than their jacketless counterparts). And for the love of god, never, ever tuck a polo.
  
  
• The sweater vest is incredibly hard to work into outfits given that the embroidery smashes it fully into casual territory, yet it's a sweater vest. I'd also be careful about pairing ties needlessly into outfits (especially with not-dark-wash jeans) and reserve it for actual formal events. Outerwear + collared shirt or just a shirt worn in a casual manner should be more than enough to give off an age-appropriate vibe.
  
  
• Outfit #25 looks fine as a fairly minimal casual outfit. I guess the jeans could be either a darker wash or a super light wash, but it really just depends on how well both pieces fit along with his shoe game. Speaking of which, he really needs some sort of minimal white sneaker. If you've the funds to spare, ASOS has a lot ranging from $15-30 with free shipping at $25 or above and a 25% discount if either of you are students.
  
  
• On #27, the light blue is fine. If it was any darker, he would look too blue. Also, you should check and ensure that the fabric on that shirt is a casual one (feels rougher and thicker). If it's a thin/smooth/glossy fabric, it might actually be a dress shirt, hence why it would seem off when you pair it with casual stuff. Tie is indeed too much in #32.

• No such thing as too much khaki. There's a ridiculous level of diversity in that color, ranging from shades that verge on olive to ivory/ecru, and all of it is incredibly versatile.
  
  
• His shoe game will also be incredibly important and will be the one thing that ties everything together. My favorite beginner versatile shoes are Bass Pasadena/Buckingham or something along the lines of their style (suede bluchers). Their texture allows for casual wear and the design works all the way up to business-casual levels of dress. Minimal sneakers and then some sort of brown lace-up will help tie everything together nicely.
  
  
• As a fellow poor person, I strongly recommend that you guys look into learning how to sew/tailor your own clothes. Simply learning how to dart and hem shirts will allow you to get the best fit out of cheap buys (similar to a lot of my wardrobe). Knowing how to hem pants can also save you a lot of headaches during the shopping process.

I'm a 30yo living and working in NJ/NYC and would like to get a pair of shoes that will look good in most settings. In work I'm usually either in a cubicle or at jobsites as an engineer/project manager in construction. Out of work I'm usually at friend's homes or bars. For a while I've been thinking about getting a pair of Amber Iron Rangers, but lately I've been thinking I might be better off with shoes instead boots since I don't need the ankle support, rarely have to trudge through mud, and never really liked the affectation of rolling up the cuffs on my jeans.

What's a good pair that will go well with jeans as well as chinos?

Initially I thought about getting either the Wolverine 1Ks in Cordovan or preferably the Red Wing Iron Rangers in Amber. I like how the latter looks with a bit of wear and proper maintenance (I like them slightly shiny).

Lately I've been thinking about getting lower cut shoes with the same level of workmanship since they'll still be fine for jobsites and I don't need the ankle support. I like the way the Wolverine 1K Watsons in Brown look and less so the Red Wing Beckman Oxford in Brick Settler or the brown pair I saw on Amazon.

TLDR; Would like to get a simple yet good looking pair of shoes that are good for both day to day social and work environment living in the Northeast. I'll be wearing jeans and chinos. Any suggestions or recommendations on the shoes/boots or their upkeep in this climate would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help!

The link you posted is not the same shoes the original BIFL post was made about. The shoes the OP has there are these, but it looks like they are no longer produced.

However, I can tell you that the Bass Buckinghams that you linked to are great shoes. They look good, go with pretty much anything, and are very comfortable. I have 2 pairs myself. I would not pay $85 for them though, they almost always sell for around $70. Bass does the same thing as many brands and has inflated high MSRPs so that everything can always be on "Sale".

You are in luck though, the same shoes are currently $60 on amazon and 6pm for most sizes. That is a pretty good price for them and a great value. I don't think you could find anything better for $60.

I bought a pair of these cap toe oxfords on a recommendation that I read once on MFA. I needed a pair of smarter looking shoes for work, but I wasn't willing to spend too much, and I needed shoes that were comfortable and durable as well as looking a bit sharper than sneakers.

These things did the trick. I receive compliments on them, they worked well in a bar environment, they were cheap, and the cordovan colored pair I own matches well and easily with just about anything; with jeans and a t-shirt for a night out, with a suit and tie for a job interview, with sweatpants and tank top when I'm making a midnight take-out run.

I also bought a pair of loafers from L.L.Bean, these handsewn ones. I bought a similar pair two years ago, they can be worn casually with shorts or dressed up with a suit. Personally I loved my pair and was devastated when they were stolen.

I used to wear exclusively sneakers and work boots until I found out my L.L.Bean loafers were more comfortable, easier to slip on, and looked better. I still love my kicks don't get me wrong, but it's nice to have the option of looking sharp when I feel like it.

The Park Ave is probably a bit overkill unless you need it for black suit wear regularly. Which is not to say you can't dress it down, as most people won't care at all, but if you want to get something a a little more interesting you can probably get away with it just fine.

I personally prefer things with broguing on them just because they're more interesting. The AE Strand is in a style I like quite a bit (and which MFA recommends regularly). It's got what's known as a "medallion" on the cap, which just means it has a cool little perforation pattern. A nifty thing about medallions is that each shoe maker tends to have their own trademark design, so you can get a cool unique looking shoe even if the styling is standard. AE's medallion is relatively plain, but just something fun to look for.

One last note on dress shoe stuff in general that I don't think is in the sidebar: Full leather shoes are made on different "lasts," which are just molds that the leather is shaped over. Thus when you see something on a dress shoe that tells you what last it is, that's telling you the shape. Note that it might be tricky to figure out which last a shoe is on if you're not at a specialty store where the salespeople really know their shit, but you can usually look it up online easily. Different lasts fit differently, so you can't ever assume that if you fit a size X perfectly in one shoe you'll be a size X in any other dress shoe, even if it's from the same manufacturer. I highly advise you to go try shoes on in person if you can. You'll feel like a dick trying on a bunch of shoes and getting sizing help when you don't intend to buy at full price (which you should not need to do), but it's a pricey decision so it won't seem weird if you tell them you need to think about it.

So anyway, on to deal searching. If you want to step it up from Florsheims, know that while Allen Edmonds basically all retail for $325 you shouldn't have trouble finding them for cheaper if you're diligent and patient. A couple weeks ago Amazon was selling a lot of them 30% off, for example. Nordstrom or Neiman's (can't remember which) should be having a half-yearly men's sale right after Christmas, too, which I think is 25% off.

This guy on Styleforum, though, sells new versions of the most popular AE models for $245 (25% off). He's got the Park Ave, the Fifth Ave (which is the Park Ave with a line of brouging on the toe cap), and the Strand. Haven't used him, but he's got good reviews. These guys usually get overstock, floor samples, etc. so it's legit.

You can also be on the lookout for "seconds" or "second quality" shoes in any brand, which are shoes with some sort of defect that kept them from passing QA. They're usually sold at a way deeper discount than the defect merits, and often the defect isn't noticeable. Usually to get ahold of these directly from the company you have to have a factory outlet or something near you, though.

Depends on what you're talking about but yeah in terms of dress shoes, these shoes are classy and fashionable and everything else is pretty much seen as plebeian imitation. Is what it is, but these are the fashionable choices for dressed up casual all the way to suit wear.

Those styles of lighter brown with detail can be worn down to jeans, or worn up to certain types of suits. They catch the attention of people who know shoes and judge based on shoes.

To be honest, these styles of menswear aren't going to go out of style, or at least they haven't over very many decades. There are styles/trends in shoewear (avoid boxy toes) but smart purchases will avoid it because while some certain attributes may be trendy, the overall style of the hand welted leather dress shoe has been fashionable for centuries.

And durability is an issue with these shoes much like it is with a suit. You don't buy new suits every year or two, why buy new shoes every year or two?

Sadly I know nothing about Canada but I assume Amazon ships there? These Taupe Bucs are ones I picked up recently and I love them to death. They're a summery casual shoe that also looks great with chinos (not sure as far as a suite).

My standard size is a 12D and that for me fit perfectly. Getting a slightly darker shade of brown would lean more toward formal over summery so choose something to fit the bill.

As one last note: the "dual leather" suede/leather (technically suede is a kind of leather but that's beside the point) shoes you linked will generally be looked down upon by MFA. I don't mind them as much but they are a bit out there.

I have some of these and I think they're pretty great for the price. Very versatile like you said, and mine have held up pretty well considering I've been using them mainly for work where I spend 12+ hours on my feet spilling random solvents and other liquids on them. They're also really soft and comfortable with little break in period. I pulled out the stock sole inserts on mine and stuck in some more padded ones. Great every day shoe. Pretty standard MFA answer, but Bass Buckinghams should serve you pretty well for the casual end of the business casual spectrum at a reasonable price.

For more traditional brown leather oxfords, some options that might work well for you are Florsheims, Bostonians, or thrifted/eBay Allen Edmonds as per this guide. Another source that's been easy for me lately has been checking clearance DSW shelves for brands like Mercanti Fiorentini, Johnston & Murphy, or Cole Haan on steep discounts.

Throw in a couple of merino wool sweaters (or cotton if you're not big on sweaters such as myself) and a thrifted blazer or two and you're ready for pretty much anything.

If you bought all of this you would only have around $300 for suiting, which probably isn't enough, but hopefully I've given you some ideas of what you might like to rebuild. Everything on the list is pretty solid quality and should last, with the exception of the cheaper suede bucks which might fall apart, or might not, who knows

You look like a tall guy, so you might want to look for jeans with a higher rise. Short-rise jeans make your torso look long and your waist too short, but pulling short-rise jeans up too high is going to be uncomfortable (obviously). Something like Levis 501s (or the more expensive Japanese repros, if you want higher-end denim) is going to be a much better choice.

I'd definitely recommend brown leather shoes and a brown belt with that. For more casual, a pair of tan suede bucks would be a classic choice. If you want something you can dress up a little more, a pair of wingtips or longwings would look great.

• Men's dress shoes that can be worn sockless with jeans
  
• Like the picture, in tan or light brown. I like the creases and coloration that have developed naturally on her shoes!

Blucher mocs, wingtips, boots (option 2), chukkas (option 2), penny loafers, and bucks (option 2 & option 3) are all some great options.

If you can, try to introduce him to slimmer pants in a darker wash -- perhaps some 511's or 513's in 'rigid dragon' or 'bastion' respectively? Combined with some new shoes, he'll look great. :)

Bass is recommended here all the time. For the price, the quality is good and is a great starter for most people. I've had mine for about 6 months and I love them.

Looks to me like they're probably a pair of navy bucks. You can find them pretty much anywhere. Bass Buckinghams are pretty well regarded around here, and they come in navy, albeit with a much lighter sole. Their Pasadenas have a darker brown sole. The ones in the picture seem to be someplace in the middle, or maybe a red brick, though they look more brown to me.

The shoes you've got go best with (casual or dress) shirts and chinos. You can also wear then with dark jeans (without distressing), but I think there are better shoes for jeans.

These are some shoes that I like wearing with jeans and chinos. The leather is more casual, and the shape is a little different than the derby you have.

Another option is blucher mocs.

My Clarks Bushacres are perfectly comfortable in the summer. I also like the frequently recommended Bass Buckingham oxford.

holds an edge better than the much more expensive chef's knives out there. if you aren't running a kitchen and doing very specific work and maintaining them daily, those knives don't make sense.

now, take shoes: I used to buy a $60 pair of rubber soled shoes every year and they would always fall apart. now I buy full grain leather, leather soled shoes that can be recrafted if they ever wear out. $300 for a pair of shoes like these sounds crazy until you realize that they actually save you money over the long term

Why a high-end knife is probably not for you

I have no personal experience with these, but I'm putting on my detective hat. Amazon lists both, as well as another similar model called Brockton. Buckingham Pasadena Brockton

Here's what I can see: Each model has a different pattern on the sole. The Buckingham looks slightly smaller in the toe. The "welt" is different (Buckingham has a flat welt, while the other two have the appearance of a storm welt). The insole on the Buckingham looks to me like it might be leather, while the Pasadena's insole looks like some kind of fabric. The grain of the suede on the Buckingham looks smoother when I zoom in, so maybe nicer leather is most of what you're paying for on the Buckingham.

Need help between two shoes:

Allen Edmonds Walnut Strands or Herring Shoes Hampsteads. I find myself drawn more to the sleekness of the English style shoe whereas the Allen Edmonds seem almost clunky. I feel like my suit would work better with the Herring which is apparently made on a Loake last.

Problem is I've already ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds at an amazing price point ($170 USD for firsts), so maybe you can convince me that AEs are good enough, and I shouldn't go through the trouble of ordering something from England.

There is this Maliseet Oxford by Quoddy that's quite beautiful. It's not suede, but it's probably more versatile because of that. It is quite expensive however. You seem to really want a shoe like this and it would get a lot of use since you have many outfits to match... so why not save up and buy a shoe that will last?

Or just go with buckinghams. Also a good idea, though I don't know if they have a blue suede w/ red brick sole.

But I'd say look for something like those (maybe not long wing) in brown for your "nice casual" shoe. Nice enough to wear with a Navy suit or slacks/blazer combo, but not so fancy that they look out of place with jeans. For sneakers I personally like adidas sambas, but you might not like those at all. I have huge feet so I'm limited to brands that make size 14.

You need to give a price range, not just say "a lot less". A lot less is still a $200 shoe. Just search for "suede derby" or "suede bucks" (although bucks may not be what you are looking for, they can be a cheaper alternative). Considering the summer is fast approaching you probably won't find a deal like you could once fall and winter come around again. Under $100 you're looking at brands like Bass, Bostonian and Florsheim. Here is a simple guide.

1901 oxfords or bass buckinghams? In terms of quality? The bass bucks are cheaper though. (not sure which color i'd get though). However, I have a $40 nordstroms gift card that i could use too.

If you like Florsheim and like longwings, try the Florsheim Veblen -- or better yet, try thrifting an old pair of shell cordovan Florsheim Imperials. The cordovan Imperials are supposed to be nearly indestructible.

That is amazing if you are. They unfortunately look like bowling shoes. If you want some nice leather casual shoes, look at chukkas , blucher mocs, bucks, work boots or alternatively some canvas sneakers (vans, converse, pf flyers, superga). Normally when a shoe tries to be both a sneaker and a "dress shoe," it does not end up well.

Honestly, I think these shoes are pretty ugly - I don't think the patch on the sides works very well and I think you could get a much more versatile shoe than these.

I'd personally recommend you look at some brown chukkas (CDBs etc), some plain tan bucks (eg Bass Buckinghams) or possibly some camp mocs (eg LL Bean camp mocs)?

These are all a lot cleaner and versatile than the Florsheim; and more often than not simpler looks nicer.

I like the blazer but am not really sure about the shoes, they are as you said a bit busy and that type of shoes with elastic fastenings tends to look a little lazy. They are also synthetic leather, and will get hot and sweaty really fast. Real leather breathes more and will look better in the long run. Maybe a pair of bucks of a pair of CDBs (clark desert boots)? They are more expensive but will last a lot longer than plastic leather boots and are quite frequently recommended here on MFA.

Red Wings Beckman Heritage Oxfords, not boots, in black

Honestly I can justify spending a lot on oxfords, not boots, because I wear them to work (business-casual, slacks and button-up with no tie). I like that these are black leather oxfords that aren't too formal (the laces and the brown sole). But I think that combination (along with the price) is why these are incredibly unpopular. Or maybe they'll just look silly, I'm hoping someone will tell me if that's the case.

I have wide feet too, and I've found that Bass Pasadena fit's pretty wide, even in the normal width...and it comes in wide too (I've also tried on the Brockton, and it was way too narrow). You can find Pasadena's on a bunch of sites, and I recently saw them on sale for $50 at a Bass outlet. That's a good place to try them on if you have one nearby.

1. Docs are combat/work boots and hence work well with certain types of fits and styles. Mainly 'edgier' ones like punk, skinhead, fits involving black skinny jeans, etc. Personally I think most docs look bad except for the classics: black or oxblood 1460s or 1490s. I've seen people pull off 1461s as a cheaper alternative to black postmans but again, it works best with a certain style. Docs, especially oxblood docs, can carry negative social connotations if you happen to be a bald white male. Brown docs look bizarre to me, especially the pebbled leather ones you've picked. I associate brown boots with a more country style, whereas docs are essentially combat boots so they look weird in brown.
   
   
   
2. Made in China Docs use corrected grain leather, it's not super great, the vintage Made in England ones use a nicer full grain leather. As far as I know Docs cannot be resoled, but they should last you many years of hard wear regardless.
   
   
3. They will be uncomfortable the first week or two you're breaking them in, but then are quite comfortable. I don't think they're a great beginner pair of shoes because they're a very very casual boot, and really only look good with a certain type of aesthetic. CDBs are much more versatile, but again it depends on your style.

Out of your price range but worth mentioning - looks smart, appropriate sole, Red Wing quality.

Brockton is the bulkiest of the three, and buckinghams are hard to find (in stores at least, in my experience); I don't think they're making them any more, or at least they're not making as many. I have the taupe pasadenas and they're great. $56 on Amazon + 20% off if you sign up for the shoes newsletter. Same applies to buckinghams and they come in the same color, but for $67 instead.
I think they're slightly nicer, but I don't know how.

They aren't horrible. The weird distressing or different coloration of the toe is a bit weird. These are probably better quality and style if you have the ability to return and get these. But what you've got is not too bad.

There's not really any rules here and you're free to buy any shoes that fit your fancy whenever. CDBs and other brown/black dress shoes get recommended a lot as your 'first' shoes because of their utility. They're shoes that go with just about anything. It's hard to recommend crazy colors to people coming here seeking generic advice simply because they're hard to match with anything without knowing the specific contents of their wardrobe. If you wanna experiment with colors you should probably start with Converse/Vans because they're cheap and they come in any color of the rainbow, so you're not out a ton of money if they don't end up working out or are of only limited utility. If you want something dressier, I think you might like a pair of white bucks - these'll go great with all your pastels. And if you wanna get a little crazy check out the Cole Haan Air Colton. They make these in a saddle shoe and an oxford that you can get with some crazy neon details.

It could very well be Clarks. They sell these which have CDB style construction in a derby style. I own a pair, and they are solid shoes.

Those don't have a crepe sole though, so more likely not the exact style I linked.

Seems like you're looking for a pair of navy suede bucks. Bass is a solid brand and has a couple options like the Pasadena and the Buckingham. Check around for pricing, but they shouldn't run you down too much.

Oh! You're in for much better news because I think those are just Clarks Originals' Desert London, the oxford equivalent of the oft-recommended Desert Boots. The color is either Sand Suede or Oakwood Suede (though it might just be the Desert Boots that are made in both those colors), hard to see through all that #photography ;-). Here they are on Amazon.

Black Dockers Gordon shoes are more or less the same as the black Target Merona Trent except the embossed logo at the bottom. I had them both and removed the insoles. The factory information under was identical.

Lately (last few years) the Target ones have started using cheaper leather/leather like material however.

I've been wearing sperrys mostly and want to diversify my wardrobe. Had my eyes on these in Grenata color, not sure if they aren't too crazy for what I have going. Are these shoes versatile, or should I go for something else? Are these too formal for casual wear? Kinda have canvas shoes in mind as well...

What about some taupe bucks? The taupe colour over brown makes it more passable with black pants, and still looks good with navy. No brouguing, and they're not boots. A question though: why would you not want them to be "too formal", yet want to wear them with dress trousers, a more formal piece of clothing?

the shirt is too casual for a banquet. try getting an ocbd to keep it a bit casual, but still formal enough.

the pants you have aren't even chino. they're styled in a 5 pocket design and from the looks of it, looks like jean material.

these are cheap but still suitable for a banquet. even if you don't have a banquet, you can still wear these. versatile.

also no bowties unless this is an extremely formal event.

I'd say the most versatile brown shoe that can be worn with pants or shorts would have to be something like some Bass Bucks in Taupe. Some white Vans Authentics would be nice if you want to stick to tennis shoes, but you can actually dress up the Tan Bucks if you need to.

Bass buckingham's are similar but I am having trouble finding them quickly. Also, Bass pasadena's are similar but are suede.

Of the two you linked to I'd take the Rockports but neither are good quality shoes. (or oxfords for that matter...)

You can expect about a year or two from a pair of Rockports/Eccos before they fall apart but they start looking old and clapped out within a few weeks. u/TheFranchize is right on the money with his suggestion of a decent pair of derbies on comfy crepe soles. A soft, rubber sole should also do the trick - from the Bass Buckingham on the lower end to the Sanders Jack on the slightly more expensive side.
