Obligatory wiki links: Dystopian Literature. Although, some of the titles listed don't seem to fit (The Dispossessed?). Nuclear holocaust fiction, and your general apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction.

Some of the better/more popular ones:

  • Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang Kate Wilhelm.

  • Eternity Road Jack McDevitt. Well written, but not very insightful.

  • The Postman David Brin.

  • Mockingbird Walter Tevis. Great read. Think Idiocracy, with a serious take. Humanity's totally run by robots, everyone's forgotten how to read and think for themselves, and the world population's dropped to almost nothing.

  • We Yevgeny Zamyatin. The inspiration for George Orwell's 1984. Not the best read IMO, but some people claim it's better than 1984. It's possible I read a poor translation.

  • Island Aldous Huxley. It's a utopian island surrounded by a dystopian world. Might not fit in this list, but it's a good read if you like Huxley. I think it was his last novel.

  • 1984 George Orwell. One of my favorite novels. I have a bumper sticker with the quote "War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength, Freedom is Slavery", which is a slogan from the book. (Also, a sticker on my mirror with "Under the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me"). The link points to Animal Farm and 1984.

  • Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury. Another must read. Very well written, thought-provoking novel. Is it still required reading in schools?

  • Earth Abides George Stewart.

  • Alas, Babylon Pat Frank. Lucifer's Hammer Larry Niven/Jerry Pournelle. I'm grouping these two together because they're very similar, both in setting and politics. I didn't really enjoy either. The politics were not at all subtle, and the characters fit too neatly into stereotypes, and too obviously the writer's hero fantasy. Still, they're pretty popular, so try them out and feel free to disagree with me.

  • Brave New World Aldous Huxley. Really just a utopia that's rough around the edges, if I'm remembering it correctly (also called an anti-utopia, thank you wikipedia). Another must read.

  • A Canticle for Leibowitz Walter Miller.

  • Memoirs Found in a Bathtub Stanislaw Lem. Another favorite. I once created a text adventure based on this book. It was about as frustrating as that Hitchhiker's Guide game.

  • The Road Cormac McCarthy.

  • Philip K. Dick It's hard to keep track of PKD's novels, but some of them are dystopian, all of them worth reading. Favorites: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (also known as/inspired Blade Runner), Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, The Man in the High Castle.

  • The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake Margaret Atwood.

  • Y: The Last Man A graphical novel/comic collection. Decent art, great story.

Zombies: World War Z, Raise the Dead, Marvel Zombies, Zombie Survival Guide, Day By Day Armageddon, I Am Legend.

Also, just for kicks, some of my favorite dystopian movies:
Brazil, Soylent Green, 12 Monkeys, Blade Runner, Akira, Children of Men, Dark City, A Boy and His Dog, Logan's Run, Idiocracy, Equillibrium.

Easy, just get him a Zombie survival guide from Dymocks/Kinokuniya. What you have to watch out for is that you don't get him a shit one, of which there are many. IMO, The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks is the best one out there. If he hasn't read it, World War Z also by Max Brooks is excellent reading. It's not so much a guide as a collection of individual recounts, reports and stuff from different people over the course of a zombie breakout. It reads realistically which is more than I can say for the majority of Zombie related "survival guides" and books that are just stupid. They're making a movie out of it with Brad Pitt starring - just to show it's popularity.

If he hasn't seen The Walking Dead, getting him the seasons on DVD might be a good idea. Awesome TV show - again, realistic. If he's seen them, don't bother. I mean, he can just download them anyway so I guess this would be a crap gift unless he really likes the show. There are graphic novels that the show is based on which might be good.

If he's a gamer, might be good to get him ARMA II: Combined Operations. The reason I say that there's a great zombie survival mod for it called Day Z which is basically an online multiplayer open-world zombie survival like game. Trust me, he'll like it. Steam summer sale is on right now so ARMA II is 20% - if you can wait, don't buy it yet as it may go on sale for more (possibly up to 75%) if it goes up as a daily deal/flash sale/community choice. There's also a The Walking Dead game which I've heard is good. It's already been a daily deal so 25% is as good as it will get now.

Last of all, making him a kit might be cool. I put together this for a redditor last year. You can probably make a better one than me - I'll admit I cheaped out a little. Get a box or a backpack (you can cheap out on the backpack) and fill it up with things like a flashlight, a med kit (bandaids, bandages, surgical scissors, sports tape etc. things you can buy from a pharmacy), water purification tablets (this especially adds to it IMO), food (canned, power bars or, if you want to go the extra mile, MREs), thick army socks, a compass, etc. Basically just shit you'd take with you if you were going camping. Make it as compact/lightweight as possible.

Well, fuck, that turned out to be a lot longer than I intended. Anyway, good luck.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing. What I did for that same redditor last year was that I wrote a survival plan for him. Basically, if you get him that Max Brooks Survival Guide, one of the things they suggest is hiding out in a prison (fortification, food, water, exercise yard, accommodation, weapons, remote etc.) - what I did was that I researched prisons in the walkable/bikable vicinity of his house and I mapped out routes to them from his house on a map I printed of his house from google maps.

u/Trudzilllla · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

OK, so most people will have the same basic plan: Get out of town, find remote fortifiable location. lay low, gather supplies, hold out til you can rebuild (great basic strategies Here!)

However, most people will be cramming the highways with the same strategy, then you get swarmed in the car on the way out.

SO, you need a contingency plan to hold out until you actually find a safe/quick/Stealthy way to execute the get-the-hell-outta-dodge part.

Supplies

have enough supplies on hand so that you could safely bunker down where (or near to) where you are. This is good advice in general and the same supplies will help you hunker down should a hurricane or a riot sweep through or society falls apart for some other reason.

  1. Food/water - enough to last for a couple weeks, stuff that will cover your basic needs for 2 weeks- 1 month (Canned food, dried food, rice, beans, etc)
  2. Basic Defense- Guns are great and all but are loud and need ammo. Think knives, axes or bludgeons. Ideally something with some reach.
  3. Fortifications- Know how you are going to secure your shelter. Going to board up your windows? Better have the tools on hand and know what you're going to use to do it.
4)Basic Hurricane Kit - hand-powered flashlight, Radio, signal flares etc. buy at any sporting goods store.

    Secure Shelter

Now this part depends greatly on when/where you are when you become aware whats going on. But in general, (unless you are just pants-shittingly unaware of your surroundings) you should have a day or so between your first Zombie sighting and when stuff really starts going to shit.

You need to have a clear idea in your head where you are going to draw the line in the sand across which the Undead shall not cross. For me this is the small section of my apartment complex. 22 units with a high iron fence all the way around. 3 entry points which can all automatically lock. I'd need to first secure and barricade these then begin to make a sweep of the neighboring units. There are 3 possibilities of what you will find. 1) Unoccupied unit - poor bastards were either caught in the initial outbreak or tried to make a run for it. make a not of these and come back for supplies. 2) Survivors - Congratulations you're not alone. enlist their help or have them keep their heads down. 3) Biters - You know what you have to do.

    Adapt

Now once you have a safe defensible location for at least the short run, all planning goes out the window. Depending on how situations develop your plans are probably going to get blown to shit. Maybe the government falls faster than anticipated, so they don't have time to firebomb major cities. Maybe you become entrenched and are going to have to survive in place ad infinitum. Maybe you find your escape path and can make for the hills and follow the default plans.

You can never be prepared - only more prepared

TLDR; Have fun feasting on the brains of your loved ones

u/l_one · 3 pointsr/zombies

For the machete a Cold Steel kukri is an excellent option.

Field strip the MREs: here's how.

Get the Chinese military shovel instead, it's really awesome. Here's one link to buy it.

Would advise a Camelbak or other mini-backpack style hydration bladder, much better for mobility.

For the rope: get milspec 550 paracord.

Gorilla brand duct tape is advised.

For the multitool either SOG or Leatherman are excellent choices. A couple of good picks from each: SOG PowerAssist and PowerLock as well as the Leatherman MUT and the Charge TTi.

Check out 4Sevens for excellent quality flashlights - really these guys are among the best in the flashlight market.

For the gun I would advise a Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock for compactness. Add some 32 round interlocking magazines and a box or two of ammo (.22LR is cheap, they come in boxes of 500 or so).

I would also recommend a Red Cross multifunction solar/crank radio.

The SAS Survival Handbook and of course the Zombie Survival Guide would make good additions.

I think there are two premises in here that could be challenged:

  1. Society benefits considerably less from derivative works than non-derivative works.

  2. Copyrights on net encourage creation of more works because of their long lifespans.

First, I see no reason to believe that derivative works are any less valuable than new works. If they're what society enjoys from its arts, then that's valuable. It's not for me (or the government) to say that a choose-your-own-adventure version of Romeo and Juliet is any less valuable to society than any other book.

On the second point, the downside of copyrights is that the fear of lawsuits will chill the creation of new works. For instance, the author of this book has not published it because of well-founded fears of a copyright lawsuit.

The larger the range of works which retain copyright, the more works will be suppressed by the fear or reality of lawsuits. This is a particular problem in the area of music, where hit songs routinely attract lawsuits alleging infringement of songs from decades prior.

Further, because of economic discounting, it is highly unlikely that long copyright terms encourage more creation. It is a well documented economic phenomenon that people value things near in time more than things further away in time. The difference in incentive between a 5 year term and a 10 year term would therefore be expected to be much greater than the incentive difference between a 50 year term and a 55 year term, because people care much more about relatively near term benefits than very long term benefits.

Given that the chilling effect of copyright lawsuits is roughly linearly correlated with the number of copyrighted works, and that the positive incentive of copyright has diminishing returns, we'd expect the lines to intersect at some "new work maximizing" point. I would wager that point is in the neighborhood of 15-20 years, if not shorter.
u/jimhodgson · 3 pointsr/writing

I have a lot of thoughts about it, but there's nothing I can say quickly. There are some great books by much smarter people than me on the /r/comedywriting reading list:

u/kim_wexlers_ponytail · 2 pointsr/suggestmeabook

> Humor is always good.

This isn't really related to any of the books/authors you mentioned but To Be Or Not To Be: A Chooseable Path Adventure is really fun. The same author also wrote Romeo and/or Juliet.

I thought those might be fun while you're recovering because they're like a book and game all in one, and they're very light-hearted.

Good luck with the procedure! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

u/ZucchiniMiss · 4 pointsr/ELATeachers

If I have a bit of extra time, I will flip through this version with students. It’s hilarious!

Honestly, though, I’d suggest watching clips from multiple different versions as you go along. Also don’t be afraid to watch scenes BEFORE you read them. I’m a huuuuuge fan of Kenneth Branagh’s unabridged, but there are scenes that drag (it is 4 hours long, after all).

The David Tennant version is pretty solid - and you can let them know that Yorick’s skull is an ACTUAL human skull (of a dude who donated his skull to the Royal Shakespeare Company in his will.)

PBS has some
Great resources for teaching the “To Be or Not To Be” speech as well.

And good luck!

u/tariffless · 3 pointsr/Fantasy

Pure worldbuilding and minimal narrative describes pretty well Expedition and Barlowe's Inferno by Wayne Douglas Barlowe.
Granted, these are books where the framing story (a person exploring the setting in question) is there to provide context for Barlowe's paintings, but you can do pretty much the same thing with words as he does with illustrations- take an explorer, an archaeologist, a historian, or some other sort of researcher, and follow them as they acquire knowledge about the setting. The story will thus focus on their discoveries, rendering exposition and story one and the same.
The SCP Foundation's various exploration logs are the best examples of this that I can name at present, as the characters involved in the framing story are generally anonymous redshirts whose only significance is the strange phenomena they encounter. As far as novels go, I also see the general formula in Jeff Fahy's Fragment.

Another example of an approach that works is the SCP-Foundation. There are traditional narratives on the site, but the main attraction for most of the Foundation's existence has been the collection of fictional documents describing various paranormal phenomena.

A fictional document or fictional documentary strikes me as a perfect method of doing what you seek. You can have an in-universe history book, an in-universe encyclopedia, some other sort of reference work like the Zombie Survival Guide, etc. You could call some of these "stories" by some definition of the word, I guess, but the bottom line is the format and content are quite different from what you typically see in things described as stories.

u/fireflygirlie · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is such a cute idea!

I'm not the most creative person ever, but I usually do homemade cards. Either dried and pressed flowers, or a picture. For my dad, I'm most likely putting a picture of him holding me at the airport (I'm adopted). The contents would say something like, "Dad-- I hope you got what you wanted, because you're more than I could ever wish for. Thanks for picking me." My dad is really incredible. I actually just added this book for my dad earlier today. for Father's Day !

Someone gifted me this book. My dad is the kind of guy that has everything, so if I get picked, honestly a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project is something he'd appreciate.

I would like to write more in terms of letters and poems, but my penpal became pretty lazy. And I'm honestly not motivated enough to write poems for anyone besides her.

However, if you are still interested in good books.[This] (https://www.amazon.com/Survive-Sharknado-Other-Unnatural-Disasters/dp/0553418130) book might be great!

u/HAMMER_BT · 2 pointsr/KotakuInAction

>This is something I was wondering about that. What's the deal with people who are like 'I'm sick of heavy handed, <current year> political crap in my comics' getting into bed with the guy who made Trump the Rabbit and Trump in Space, or whatever they were called?

I would say there is a slight misconstruing of things, at least with regards to Lim (open to correction /u/AnarcrotheAlchemist or anyone else that knows better);

Lim's first book (Thump: The First Bundred Days) and his Trump-themed parody of My Hero Academia (My Hero Magedemia, natch) are stand-alone, boutique publications. More than novelty gifts (I have Thump, which is delightful, and Just Some Guy reviewed Magedemia rather glowingly), but they aren't ongoing comics or soft relaunches or things of that nature.

Are they political? Oh yeah! But they're not meant to be anything but political, and they are up-front about that.

Obviously I can't speak for Lim, but certainly my objection is not that things like these (or the analogous Obama/Reagan hero worship stuff) exist, but the infiltration of hard-left politics into places that weren't just previously politically 'neutral', but places where it is detrimental to the story.

Where they intersect with CG is (again guessing) because Lim was attacked by The Mary Sue (the OG Asian White Nationalist) and clearly ostracized from mainstream comics even before EVS started getting hit.

I would slightly differ from Anarcro in that I think CG (much like GG) is really more a movement of people that have been ostracized from the mainstream combined with a consumer revolt than a coherent movement with a unifying message.

u/McIgglyTuffMuffin · 2 pointsr/lootcrate

It's 10 dollars on Amazon.

It's a real book, not some Lootcrate exclusive. I'd give you my extra since I owned it already, but I already gave it away. But really if you love Sharknado buy the book, support SyFy and give them more money to make fun movies like this!

u/[deleted] · 312 pointsr/funny

I disagree. As a comedy nerd + writer, I have to chime in here. I hate this argument. It's not generational, it's the format.

The format SNL, weekly live show that is necessarily based on advertisements, is a poor format. You have to write quickly to produce that much material. Which isn't so bad, except you have such a wide audience and dependence on advertisement that you have to go for the common denominator EVERY TIME.

There are plenty of smaller groups who can do amazing weekly work, but that is because they can rely on their audience to be smart. The SNL audience is millions of people. Millions of people who the advertisers NEED to keep watching the show.

There are a ton of talented writers + performers that march through SNL. But overall it is mediocre comedy based on catch phrased characters. Even your example is a catch phrase.

For example,
Matt Foley character was first developed by Bob Odenkirk for another show. He was a fully fledged character, the way Odenkirk wrote him. (source: Here's The Kicker, http://www.amazon.com/Heres-Kicker-Conversations-Humor-Writers/dp/1582975051)

The first Matt Foley skit is true to that. He is a flawed being but with just enough humanity to keep our empathy.

Even in the second or third sketch the catchphrase is uttered immediately as Farley goes over the top and crashes through a coffee table to grab laughs in just the first minute.

It's a format that necessarily yields aggravatingly simple and base comedy.

Fierce_Fox is right. FM manuals such as FM-217-76 Survival.....may be somewhat outdated but the information is reliable.
As a Medic/EMT my prepping focuses on my skill set with everything else falling close in line. I have a lot of information in digital format; both on USB and a small external drive. I have a small tablet that is in my BoB for reading documents and such.

The last one is more humor but it does have many great points and ideas.
A library that covered everything would be very heavy and take up a bit of space. For the minimum, at least 1-2 books on everything one will need to survive will still be a lot. These books should be read, reread, and read again. We can't memorize everything, but having this to go back on when needed is a great addition. There's tons of information online and downloadable for free.
Depending on one's skill set, then they may not need as much. Teach others in a group is a must. Can't have one person be the ONLY one who can do 'this' skill. IMO, research should always be the first step. So much information out there and it's free.

I think that as a financier yeah even the gov't should exercise discretion on what it can and cannot fund. However I think it's pretty immature for that government to limit culture based on something so tame as nudity. However, that can be just as applicable to the performance. A nude performance just to act in the nude doesn't really sound like it adds anything other than to be a cheap gimmick. Nude Shakespeare had this problem cause that's all it did. But others that took Shakespeare and blended it with other media or "modernized" it actually had to exercise thought into why it held a purpose.

Not to say all nude performance is just that empty of substance outside of its nudity. But it really is up to the creator to justify it. Yes, nude is our natural, human state. Art and culture aren't natural, human states, though. They're intellectual expressions. So expecting a creator to validate the intelligence of the piece isn't a bad standard to hold, regardless of its subjectivity.

u/Weedwacker · 141 pointsr/OutOfTheLoop

Vice President Joe Biden has a reputation for speaking his mind. He's had so many gaffes in office (just google: joe biden gaffe) and there's been more than a few times he's just straight up cursed in front of the media, which is unusual for a politician nowadays. People actually love him for this because it makes him seem like a more down to earth real guy who somehow ended up vice president.

The Onion capitalized on this image of him by fictionalizing him as an old guy always getting into young-guy movie-type comedic situations and doing unexpected wild things. Believe it or not it's been a successful parody for The Onion and they have lots of these stories. Joe Biden and the White House administration have also reacted well to the parody but insist that's not his real personality.

This one has always been one of my favorites.

The parodies were successful enough that The Onion released a "autobiography" of their 'Diamond' Joe Biden character. "He" has also done an AMA on reddit.

I can't do iambic pentameter (I'm not even sure how to read it aloud properly), but I do love Shakespeare. I got this book for christmas and laughed my face off :)

u/susakuchanticleer · 1 pointr/evangelion

That would be really cool! If it was possible for someone to rewrite Star Wars as a Shakespearean drama, then Eva surely could be given the same treatment.

On a similar note, I've always thought it would be awesome if someone rewrote Eva as an epic poem- maybe in alliterative verse like in Beowulf (which like Eva, describes a series of battles against progressively stronger monsters), but then have it occasionally turn into super modern experimental verse to describe the weird surreal stuff like the Komm Susser Tod sequence.

u/Impassionata · 16 pointsr/slatestarcodex

So one benefit of being the older side of the generation is I remember when Politically Correct became a controversy in the 90s. I had some of these books growing up.

The dialect is basically all the same. The controversy is essentially the same thing again. There was a South Park joke about it during the PC Principal run, I can't remember the exact bit.

This isn't new. It isn't a millennial creation. I guess I can't testify as to the novelty of NRX, but c'mon, it's built at least somewhat on looking for good ideas in our past, so it's almost a foundation in not innovative (to its credit).

These 'millennial' sites are just a location for ideologies that are easily recognized, playing out the same way they've always played out. In some sense we'll only have a sense of what people in their 40s-60s feel now once we stop being preoccupied with it, except that the answer is probably: you never stop being preoccupied with it, you just work around it and realize that your day to day life isn't dramatically affected most of the time.

The Walking Dead pushed them over the top, but the initial groundswell came from The Zombie Survival Guide (which is actually a pretty fun, humorous read.)

I'd say a nice bottle of bourbon or cognac would do the trick. Or, if he wouldn't like that (you know better than me), you could build him a zombie survival kit. You can personalize it with his favorite snacks, etc, and then have something like http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Survival-Guide-Complete-Protection/dp/1400049628 to bring it all together. That seems pretty practical.

u/CapnCrunchHarkness · 3 pointsr/wikipedia

If you like that, check out the book An Exaltation of Larks by James Lipton (yes, the "Inside the Actor's Studio" guy.) that is mentioned on the Wikipedia page. It has a great introduction about these "terms of venery" and some of their origins, a really comprehensive list with illustrations, and Lipton himself even gets into creating new ones. Very cool book.

u/NobilisUltima · 1 pointr/StarWars

Okay, I know you were just making a reference, but if you like Shakespeare and Star Wars check this shit out. It's the entirety of A New Hope painstakingly translated into iambic pentameter, oftentimes practically line-for-line, with a few beautiful soliloquies thrown in for good measure. It was done by someone who's obviously a huge fan of both Shakespeare and Star Wars, and if you are too you'll love it. I believe he's done Episodes IV, V, and VI, although I've only read IV. Can't recommend it enough.

It's a very easy, light read. But in my opinion it's the best, more realistic and rational zombie book. Hell, it was written by the guy who wrote the Zombie Survival Guide.

Books

  • Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. A great read that will forever fuel zombie conversations in the future.
  • World War Z by Max Brooks. A well done recount of the zombie war that nearly wiped humans off the planet.
  • Day By Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne. A compelling diary-style account from the beginning of a zombie apocalypse.
  • Beyond Exile by J. L. Bourne. A sequel that picks up right where Day By Day left off.
  • The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger Ma. Meh. Just a cash-in on Max Brooks' great work with the survival guide.
  • U.S. Army Zombie Combat Skills by 'Dept. of the Army'. Lame. About as fun to read as a roll of toilet paper.

Perusing though my local bookstore selection only reveals scant titles with even a conservative bent, and even then the joke tends to just be "look at this strawman, isn't this ridiculous!" like the Social Justice Warriors handbook or my personal favorite Reasons to vote for democrats which is just an empty book similar to a journal, and that's almost like a joke right -the democrats have no plans, see? An Exaltation of Larks: The Ultimate Edition by James Lipton

> An "exaltation of larks"? Yes! And a "leap of leopards," a "parliament of owls," an "ostentation of peacocks," a "smack of jellyfish," and a "murder of crows"! For those who have ever wondered if the familiar "pride of lions" and "gaggle of geese" were only the tip of a linguistic iceberg, James Lipton has provided the definitive answer: here are hundreds of equally pithy, and often poetic, terms unearthed by Mr. Lipton in the Books of Venery that were the constant study of anyone who aspired to the title of gentleman in the fifteenth century. When Mr. Lipton's painstaking research revealed that five hundred years ago the terms of venery had already been turned into the Game of Venery, he embarked on an odyssey that has given us a "slouch of models," a "shrivel of critics," an "unction of undertakers," a "blur of Impressionists," a "score of bachelors," and a "pocket of quarterbacks." This ultimate edition of An Exaltation of Larks is Mr. Lipton's brilliant answer to the assault on language and literacy in the last decades of the twentieth century. In it you will find more than 1,100 resurrected or newly minted contributions to that most endangered of all species, our language, in a setting of 250 witty, beautiful, and remarkably apt engravings.

Bonus: this web site had a contest to come up with more of these. The article includes an illustration of "a business of ferrets".

Park Slope, a place “where everyone knows one another, and we watch out for our neighbors via a system of silently judging them. In Park Slope everyone is equal, except for the children, who are in charge of everything and are allowed to kill you on sight if you don’t entertain them.” (or so says John Hodgeman)

Ok that's not really a fact. But Prospect Park was designed by Olmsted and Vaux after they worked on Central Park, and apparently they were much more pleased with the results despite it being a smaller area, having learned how to improve the flow of the paths a second time around.

And Max Brooks (Mel Brooks son) published this in like 2003. I'm not trying to split hairs, I'm just trying to say that zombie apocalypse stuff has been around long before vampires had sparkles.

If you're interested, James Lipton (yes, the same James Lipton) wrote a book called "An Exaltation of Larks" that researched all the terms of venery and created some new ones.

Franken wrote a hilarious book about running for president before the 2000 campaign. It's in the format of a campaign diary.

u/-purple-is-a-fruit- · 8 pointsr/CrazyIdeas

Does anyone remember Franken's book "Why Not Me?" The premise of the book is a hypothetical scenario wherein Franken is elected president and the results are comical and disastrous.

If I recall, this book was pretty good. Not as good as "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big, Fat Idiot", but okay.

You're attempting to absurdum, while completely ignoring every facet of the word 'democracy'. There are shitty parts of it, but for the majority there is a great deal of protection provided simply by that factor.

I need to get up and go to work. I've been on reddit for over an hour, and I'm already late. I should get going, esp. if I want to go to stick time during my lunch break.

Also, I got my copy of the screenplay to The Room, and I now want to give it the Shakespearian treatment that The Big Lebowski and Star Wars have recently received.

u/DeeWall · 9 pointsr/AskReddit

It's actually an unkindness of ravens. You can have a parliament of owls.

In case you are looking for more. Or just want to know why I know this.

Don't worry, there's a book.

u/treetree888 · 7 pointsr/reddit.com

Settle in, hunt, gather, and prepare a defensible structure for the warmer months when the zombies will thaw out and come to attack you again. Preferably one big enough to allow some farming in the warmer periods. Of course, this means no timely return to a normal life as we know it, which is a bummer.
The last few chapters of the ZSG cover exactly this :)

u/arvel1996 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Have you read this then? i love that book and also World War Z by the same author.

It's probably more common than the fact that a group of ravens is called an "unkindness."

One of the seminal works in the field of collective nouns was written by James Lipton from Inside The Actors Studio.

Some of my own favourites: "an unkindness of ravens" and "a parliament of owls"

If you're way into this kind of thing, James Lipton (of Actor's Studio fame) wrote a whole book of them, An Exaltation of Larks.
