What system you play on is beside the point. Let's see what we can plan out for you.

I'm basing this off of your other comment's projected budget, $500 - $1000.

__

First and foremost, your wheel and pedals. Whether you start with your cockpit/wheelstand or wheel is mostly up to preference, but I'd start with a wheel first, since a wheel clamped to a desk with pedals on a floor is the minimum of simracing, whilst a rig with no wheel is just a glorified gaming seat. Plus, what you get first sets the budget of what comes after it, and I wouldn't prioritize an expensive rig over a good wheel.

Anyway, where you go from here pretty much depends on how much you're looking to spend. If your budget is $500 - $1000 and you're looking to get a whole setup going, I'd keep the wheel+pedal spending to $500 or less. This will leave you with a decent amount of wiggle room for rigs and accessories. All of the suggested wheels are compatible with Xbox One.

_____

Wheels and Pedals

  • Thrustmaster TMX

A budget wheel if there ever was one. It's by no means a bad wheel, for $200. It has reasonably strong FFB and similar build to its more expensive counterpart, the TX. Though with a brushed motor and belt-gear hybrid system, it's not as strong nor as smooth as the TX. As someone who's tried its PlayStation counterpart (the T150, basically the same base with a slightly different rim), I'd say it's 75% the quality for 50% the price. If you're on a strict budget and know you'll be on one for a while, it's a pretty good deal.

^(NOTE: As of writing this, it's currently on sale for $160!)

  • Thrustmaster TMX Pro

If you're planning to drive with an H-gate shifter in the future, then this version of the TMX is a good deal. Instead of the standard 2-pedal Thrustmaster set, it comes with Thrustmater's T3PA Pedals. On top of getting a clutch pedal, it includes a conical brake mod, designed to give more tension to your brake pedal and allow you to better control braking. Plus, in just about any wheel-supported Xbox One game you can map the brake to the clutch and put the conical brake mod behind it, giving your legs more room if you're not using an H-gate shifter. Though if you know you never want to use an H-gate, it might be better value to just get the standard TMX and use a DIY solution for modding the brake.

  • Thrustmaster TX

In case you're wondering, yes, it comes with Ferrari branding as standard. Anyway, this is arguably the best bang-for-your-buck. TX TX's rim is interchangeable, so if you're not a fan of the stock one, you can replace it with another Thrustmaster rim of your choosing. On top of that, its belt-driven FFB system is a bit stronger and considerably smoother than the TMX, not to mention that it's hard mountable (is able to be screwed-in to a rig instead of needing a clamp). While some get the TMX as a starter wheel and upgrade later, this wheel is often people's one-stop for sim racing, since it's just that good.

^(NOTE: You really picked the best time to get into sim racing, this wheel is only $257 as of writing this! $400 is a decent price for this wheel but the current price is an absolute steal.)

  • Thrustmaster TX Leather Edition

Similarly to the TMX, this is Thrustmaster's step-up version of the wheel; not only does it include a special black version of the T3PA pedals, it also includes a much better rim. While its style is more akin to the TMX, its rim is made from a metal frame, making it feel more solid than the TMX and standard TX plastic rims, and is wrapped in a nice leather instead of rubber. For only $67 more than the standard TX, it's a significant savings over buying the parts separately.

  • Fanatec CSL Elite

This is the premium class of wheels, for the most part. Fanatec's hardware is generally only built from the best of materials and offer some of the best performance, along with being open to Fanatec's wider, more advanced selection of parts and accessories. However, unlike most wheel bases, this is only the wheel base, no rim or pedals included. If you want Fanatec's base CSL offerings for a rim and pedals, the price jumps to about $470, the same price as the TX, but that's only with two pedals. If you want their 3-pedal base instead, the price jumps up to $590, and if you want a GT style rim instead, you're already over $600 with the 2-pedal set, $700 with the 3-pedal set. Fanatec's gear is top-quality, but it comes at a price. Is the bit of extra quality worth the prices that the parts quickly add up to? That's subjective. At the very least, I wouldn't recommend Fanatec Gear if you're on a budget, but maybe consider it for the future.

    _____

    Rigs and More

There are some Xbox One wheels for you to consider. I hope my explanations made sense, I wanted to make sure to convey the different aspects of each wheel so you could better make a decision.

If you want my personal recommendation though, I'd say the TX, especially since it's on sale. $250 for that base is a great price, it's a near-perfect balance of budget with performance.

Next on the list, a rig. If we're assuming that you're willing to reach towards the upper-end of your budget, then continuing here after you get your wheel is a no-brainer. Having a dedicated place to secure your wheel and mount your pedals makes for a far better experience than sitting at a table, especially if you're playing in front of a TV.

Keep in mind that there are two types of rigs, wheel stands and cockpits. Wheelstands are only meant to mount your wheel and pedals, where you sit is up to you. They're designed to be foldable and easy to carry, making them perfect for playing in front of the living room TV or using in a small apartment. Dedicated cockpits take things to the next level, securing your seat to the wheel and pedals means that you won't have to worry about anything sliding around, and makes things more comfortable overall.

As much as I want to continue though, there are many, many great options to choose from and reddit has a length limit on comments. For more information on building your rig, you can check out the r/Simracing Buyer's Guide in the wiki. It includes everything wheels and rigs to accessories and monitor mounts.

Cheers, and let me know if you have any questions.

What are you looking for in terms of flight control hardware? What kind of aircraft do you want to fly in? Also, what's your budged?

If you just want an inexpensive stick that covers all the basics, get a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Sets you back only ~$26 and will probably serve you well for a long time.

If you want to go for a realistic experience, I'd recommend getting the following hardware (ordered by importance, obviously subjective):

  • A proper controller: Depending on what you want to fly there are several high-end control systems that will allow you to control your aircraft in a more realistic way. For military aircraft, you should take a look at the CH Fighterstick and throttle, the Saitek X52 Pro or, if you're rich, the Thrustmaster Warthog. I have no experience with the CH stuff, but I've owned several X52s over the years. It's true that you will probably not find a similarly featured controller for that price, but you should know that the X52 has some serious issues. More info here. Long story short, Saitek has some serious problems with quality control and your mileage with the X52 will pretty much depend on whether you get a good unit or not.
The Warthog is insanely good, but also insanely expensive.
If you want to fly general aviation aircraft, I recommend looking at the CH Yoke or the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke. Both are solid, affordable yokes that will make for a pretty good experience. If you want to get serious, keep an eye on the Iris Dynamics Force Feedback Yoke. It's not out yet, but it promises to be an affordable simulation-grade yoke with realistic force feedback - Keep in mind that "affordable" means ~$800 in this case.

  • Head tracker: Head tracking is an absolute game changer. It will make your sim experience magnitudes more immersive and enjoyable. TrackIR 5 is probably the easiest way to get head tracking going, but it's pretty damn expensive. Also, NaturalPoint, the company making TrackIR, is frequently coming under fire for iffy business practices and anti-consumer behavior. Read more here. If you want an alternative, take a look at FreeTrack or FaceTrackNoir.

  • Rudder pedals: A twisty stick is okay, but to get precise input you will definitely need proper pedals. I own Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals and I'm very happy with them. They are pretty comfortable and adjustable. If you want to go for realism, I'd recommend the CH Pedals - they have a much steeper angle and are closer to what you'd find in a real aircraft.

  • Multiple monitors: Having three monitors is a definite plus. The wider field of view will definitely help you on the immersion front (having peripheral vision in your sim is pretty great) and in combination with a head tracker you'll get an awesome visual experience from them. If you want to go crazy, add a touchscreen to your setup like this guy. Keep in mind that running a multi-monitor setup requires a beefy GPU.

As far as addons go, I unfortunately only have experience with FSX. For FSX there are some addons that I consider essentials:

  • Accu-Feel: An amazing addon that adds lots of dynamic sounds and physics. Accu-Feel makes your sim feel much more authentic and fun.
  • EZCA: A camera plugin that adds dynamic head movements and snap views. Works very well with TrackIR. EZCA will make turbulences, g-forces and ground movements feel much better.
  • FTX Global: A graphics addon that gives FSX good ground textures, buildings, trees and more. Makes FSX look pretty nice even without tons of scenery/shader/texture packs.
  • Active Sky Next: A weather addon that adds realistic weather systems, cloud textures and even friggin' tornadoes! Looks and feels much better than FSX's default weather.

Sorry for not being able to recommend any X-Plane addons. I haven't tried that sim and have absolutely no experience with it.

I hope you found something useful in this wall of text. Anyways, welcome back to the hobby, have fun! :)

> "what are other good LEFT-hand joystick other than the TM 16000m ?"

There are a handful of other options but the T16000M is the best value which is why it's always recommended. If you are willing to spend more, others will have suggestions for you... I don't honestly remember what the left-handed options are.

> "I read mixed things about the TM TARGET software, some good things, and some bad things. The first thing I would like to know is simply your opinion on it."

I know a fair amount of people that have trouble with TARGET but I never have. It seems some have hardware conflicts, but luckily, it's always just worked for me. Is it bullet proof? No. For me, the biggest issue is when, for various reasons, my T16000M is registered as a device later in the line than usual when booting, giving it a different ID. This tends to throw things off.

The thing to remember is that there are two parts to the TARGET software but you can't use both simultaneously. There is the TARGET GUI which lets you quickly and easily set up and configure the stick through an interface. It gets the job done if your needs aren't crazy. But, if you need more control over the configuration, you have to dive into the TARGET scripting in which you write code to make it do what you want. And, like any type of coding, if you're not familiar with it, it can be frustrating.

> "is there a way to make TARGET work with one TM and one non-TM stick at the same time ?"

Absolutely. I use a CH Fighterstick in my right and the T16000M in my left. BUT... TARGET can't see or communicate with a non-TARGET-enabled stick. I don't have pedals... yet. Maybe someday.

So... below is my setup and WHY I personally do this. It's not ideal for everyone but it's what brings me the most joy flying in SC given my budget/space/style parameters. I don't play with dual sticks to be highly competitive or to see my name on the leaderboards. I do it because it makes flying that much more enjoyable for me.

I've been playing combat flight sims since the late 80's with one or two sticks and I've been a dual stick user in SC for a couple years now and love it. Most here will recommend two of the very capable and affordable Thrustmaster T16000M or the newer version, Thrustmaster VG T16000M FCS. Both of these sticks have molded bits on the handle that are removable and come with replacements so you can make them usable in the right or left hand.

While I use dual sticks, I don't use two T16000Ms and here's why:

Yes, the T16000M can be made to work right or left handed... and that's fantastic. That's why I use it in my LEFT hand. And while it's true the T16000M has LOTS of buttons on it, 12 of those buttons are on the base and only accessible in a dual stick setup by taking one hand off of one of your sticks. That's not ideal.

So, I went with a CH Fighterstick for my right hand. I've always loved CH products... they just feel a little more sturdy to me. But, the reason I did it was because ALL the buttons on the Fighterstick are ON THE STICK within reach of your fingers/thumb. There are triggers, buttons and hats that amount to 24 (I think) digital buttons (on/off) within reach of your hand that's already holding the stick.

The main argument for using dual sticks is to have six analog axis in your hands at all times (X, Y, twist for both sticks). The drawback though of my setup is that while the T16000M has three analog axis (X, Y, twist) on the stick, the CH Fighterstick only has two (X, Y... no twist). That means with just the sticks, I have five analog axis to work with. BUT, for me personally, that was a trade-off I was willing to make. Eventually, I have dreams of owning pedals to cover the missing axis.

Also, I fly with all fixed guns, no gimbals. That's how I remove the gimbal variable for myself. Again, this is a choice based on the way I like to play flight sims.

Here's my setup:

I've posted my HOSAS (Hands On Stick And Stick... otherwise known as Dual Sticks) setup details multiple times... so I apologize to those who keep seeing it. I post it here again not because I feel it is the best method/setup, but simply for you to consider and take bits from if you wish:

-----

> I know it's easier said than done, but if you have access to two sticks (friends peripherals) and a HOTAS setup, try both/all and see what feels good. You could also find a really cheap, used stick on Ebay or ShopGoodwill.com as a test. So long as the axis work, that's all you need to test the setup. Then, if you're happy with how it feels, invest in a proper stick. I just happened to have an old, barely working stick laying around that I used to test the dual stick setup. After 2 weeks, I was convinced it was right for me so I picked up a newer stick (still used though).

To have fine control over throttle on the Y-axis WITH reverse but to also be able to set the throttle using the throttle lever on the T16000M for longer flights without having to hold the T16000M forward to maintain velocity. For example, if I let go of the T16000M, my thrust will be 0. If I set the throttle lever to 75% and don't touch the Y-axis, my ship will maintain the 75% thrust/velocity. As soon as I touch the Y-axis, I again have fine control over thrust.
> 2. To be able to fly with only the main hand (CH Fighterstick) when fine throttle control was not necessary. I try to have all my main controls that I need on the Fighterstick with the extras on the t16000M. Combine that with some key VA commands and it works well in AC.

> I think the greatest drawback my setup has is that vertical strafing is not intuitive or easy (since it is bound to a hat on the Fighterstick). But, the throttle was the the key part of my setup and I wanted it on the Y-axis of the T16000M. I do not have pedals or any other peripherals.

>What do I need in a computer/hardware to run this game optimally

Broadly speaking- A 4th Gen Intel i5 or better for the CPU. GTX 1060 or better for your Graphics. 16GB of RAM, and a Solid State Drive for storing the game on. DCS has some long loading times, and the SSD will cut them down as much as possible. For VR, the Graphics Card will manage but I recommend a GTX 1070 or above.

One problem you'll have getting a gaming PC right now is that RAM and Graphics Cards are both in short supply and supply. As such their prices have gone up quite a bit. Graphics cards doubling in price in some cases. While I would typically recommend building your own PC due to price and quality reasons, a prebuilt PC may actually be cheaper now. Make sure you ask around, both with your friend and on here before you buy one. We'll set you straight.

> I also am considering going VR with Rift for full immersion, would that require addition components and is it worth it?

Personally I think VR is absolutely worth it. I've had my Oculus Rift for nearly a year now and have put a few hundred hours into DCS with it. You can usually demo VR units in places like Fry's Electronics or other such shops. Sometimes even Best Buy. Give it a try some time. VR will come with everything you need out of the box. Except the Computer, of course.

>Any helpful input is much appreciated.

As far as other stuff, you'll need a Flight Stick and Throttle (HOTAS). I typically recommend the Thrustmaster T.16000M as a starter all-round HOTAS. It's built well, has a lot of buttons, and is precise. You could get something lower-end, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you have something particular you want to fly, other HOTAS sets might be better suited, but the T.16000M will do anything well.

Pedals are helpful but not really something I would urge you get unless you're planning on flying Helicopters. Especially the Huey. You need a good Rudder input to tame it. If I had to recommend a set for the average user it'd probably be the CH Pro Pedals Get them used though. Trust me when I say this- CH kit are built like tanks. Get them second hand from a good Ebay seller and pocket the extra cash.

If you end up deciding to go without VR, then you will need a headtracker of some sort. They work by using a camera and some software to track the position of some Infrared LEDs attached to a hat or headset, then translate that into an input in game. This lets you look around your cockpit. That may not sound like much but it's a game changer. The official product is called TrackIR5. I don't recommend you get this. While it is the easiest to set up and is perfectly good quality, it is vastly overpriced. Trackhat or Delanclip make good products. Pair that with this camera and you're good to go.

I know that's a lot of info but DCS can be a little daunting to get into, especially if you're not already versed in PC gaming. Hopefully this helped and if you have any questions feel free to PM me :)

u/iAmAddicted2R_ddit · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Absolutely.

For your controller needs, if you want to use a DualShock4, DS3, Wii U Pro Controller or WiiMote, all you need is a mini Bluetooth dongle and a driver such as DS4Windows (google "[controller] driver windows"). With the proper driver they should be supported under most games, but they might require a button mapping tool to work with some stuff (we can help you with that).

If you want to go the easy route and have a controller supported by most games with no driver configuration as soon as you plug it in, an Xbone controller is your choice. However, it will require a special M$ dongle to work wirelessly, and be warned that this dongle only works under Windows 10. Alternately, if you can live with some inferior design features, you can get a 360 controller (which still works with nearly all controller games) and its corresponding dongle, which has the added benefit of working with all Windows's back to XP. However, be aware that both of these controllers require AA batteries rather than the rechargeable packs found in DualShock/Nintendo. You can buy a rechargeable pack for Xbox controllers but it obviously costs extra.

All of the aforementioned controllers will also work over USB with any operating system.

Now to the second part of your question. I assume that you mean you want to play on your TV–this can be accomplished one of two ways and is easy to setup. The first and most obvious way is to simply keep your PC in your entertainment center and hook it to your TV over HDMI, in much the same way that you would your PS4. Steam's Big Picture mode tries to emulate the homescreen of a console to make controller navigation easier, and does a pretty good job of it. Coming from the PS4 interface I'm sure you'll feel right at home–but you do still need a KB+mouse to get in Big Picture from a cold PC startup. This shouldn't be an issue as there are many cheap wireless keyboards with inbuilt trackpads on offer.

The second way is to use a Steam Link. This is a very handy little set-top box that will stream video input over the internet from a PC in the house–if you've ever heard of the PlayStation TV, this is similar. In order to use the Link you must have fast (at least 10mbps; check using speedtest.net) Ethernet on both ends (your PC and the Link) and a controller that connects over USB (either thru a USB cable or a USB wireless receiver. The Xbox receivers mentioned in a previous paragraph currently don't work with the Link but Valve says they are looking into it). It's very simple to setup–hook the Link to internet, plug in your controller and HDMI cable for TV connection, and pair it with your PC. Then you'll have total access to all your controller-supported PC games from the couch, with no loss of graphics.

Also, as a PC gamer, I have a word for you–there are some games that do play better with KB+M, especially shooters. Trust me, once you try something like Call of Duty with a mouse, you will never be able to go back to aiming with controller sticks. If you want this benefit but still find KB+M uncomfortable, there is the Steam Controller which features a more accurate trackpad in place of the right stick, and will work with most of the games that an Xbox controller works with.

One final word. If you are actually, legitimately serious about getting into PC gaming–please for the LOVE OF GOD do not buy a pre-built one. BUILD. YOUR. OWN. Seriously, if you are looking to surpass consoles and get value for money, I CANNOT stress this enough. Although it may seem daunting at first it's really little more than high-tech LEGOs–/r/BuildaPCforMe will furnish you with a parts list so you don't have to bother with that, and then the build will take two hours tops (even if you're inexperienced). There are tons of great videos on YouTube that will show you how–this is my personal fave, although I do advise you not to use any of those parts since that vid is considerably old.

If you have any questions feel free to reply to this and I can help you out.

u/Gullible_Goose · 2 pointsr/simracing

I assume the wheel you have is a Driving Force GT. If it is, that's a pretty good wheel, and if you're okay with the gear-driven force feedback and the shitty pedals, you should be good for now. The next step up I would recommend the T300 Alcantara bundle, which is the best "bang for your buck" deal on the market currently.

For games, I have pretty much every sim on the market right now, barring RRRE and more niche stuff like those karting sims and whatnot. I switch between them several times a day, which doesn't really feel weird at all, since I have my wheel settings how I like them in each game.

If you're looking for competitive racing your 4 best options are easily iRacing, rFactor 2, Automobilista (my favourite all-round sim btw, get it regardless!), and rFactor. iRacing has already been talked about in this thread, but I've been getting back into it recently, and it's seriously the best on the market for competitive online racing. rFactor 2 is the best sim for leagues right now, since it's arguably the most realistic sim, and has the best support for mods online. Automobilista's not great for pick-up races, but I race in a GT3 league and I'm loving it. And rFactor has a ton of leagues for all sorts of cars still going strong, if you don't mind outdated graphics.
***

Since you asked someone else, I'll describe to you what I think about the "pick-up" nature of iRacing vs running a league.

Pick-up races: If you're in iRacing, most series run races every couple hours, which means you can race pretty much any time. Participation varies per series, but most series have healthy attendance most hours of the day. You don't get to know people quite as well, although if you race regularly in a series, you'll get to know some people eventually. I remember once, I joined a C Class race (NASCAR Trucks) with open setups, and there were like 10 guys in the race who knew eachother well, inside jokes and all.

Leagues: Leagues feel more like a real life racing series. You get to know your competitors; their personalities, abilities, and weaknesses*. Knowing your competitors well not only adds to the overall atmosphere of the series, since each race is important for your series standings, but allows for much more interesting races, since racers often play off of eachother's weaknesses. If you find a league that appeals to you, definitely give it a shot.

Go in with minimal expectations. It's a really well done thing, ESPECIALLY considering it's running on your phone, but there are limitations and flaws.

Make sure you have at the very least some decent headphones. Using headphones makes a HUGE difference in VR. A Bluetooth controller isn't required for most apps in the store, but it doesn't hurt to have it for some games. Most apps control just fine with the touch pad, but there are a couple games that need one. I picked up a SteelSeries Stratus XL and it's sturdy and feels great, although it isn't rechargeable.

It's also not a bad idea to have a micro cloth and maybe some alcohol wipes and canned air on hand. You really want to make sure that there is as little dust, smudge on both sides of the lenses as well as on the screen, since you're gonna be seeing all of that really up close.

Now here are some apps that I've tried and I think are must have so far:

Introduction to Virtual Reality
A relatively short video of some clips that show you what VR is about.

Netflix
You're in a cozy cabin with a mountain view watching Netflix on a giant TV. Really immersive.

Oculus Video
You can stream different types of videos from facebook, twitch and vimeo and play them on a big screen in different settings like home theater, movie theater and even on the moon. Works in a similar way as the Netflix app.

Milk VR
Another streaming service, but without an immersive area where you're relaxing, just a floating screen. You can play downloaded VR videos through this app.

Cirque du Soleil's Kurios and Zarkana
I've never been interested in Cirque du Soleil, but seeing it up close in 360 and 3D is really neat. Zarkana is a really short part of it and Kurios is a 10 minute act. Really fantastic, immersive stuff.

Jurassic World: Apatosaurus
Short video where you're sitting on a log in the woods with a giant sauropod from the Jurassic Era comes out of the ground and asks for money. We was so scared, lord have mercy. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM US, MONSTER?

Dreadhalls
Randomly generated dungeon crawler where you don't have weapons and are stuck with a bunch of nasty creatures. I love horror games and have been playing them for many years, but this one makes me really uncomfortable. Play with headphones.

Land's End
Kind of a mild puzzle experience with really nice, clean visuals. Very neat

StreetView VR
It's not 3D, but really cool to be able to just zap around the world and see 360 images of places where you've never been. Swipe up and you get a random location, swipe down and you can tell it where to go. Voice recognition has worked for me really well so far. There isn't any ambient audio in the app, so I recommend playing your own music before you start this.

There are a TON of different apps out there and a bunch that I haven't mentioned, so have fun with it when you get it.

Hello OP!

From your post and comments, I've gathered that you only need 2 pedals, don't need an H-pattern shifter, and play on the Xbox platform.

Assuming you need your wheel + pedals shipped for $500 AUS, (that's $358 USD, plus shipping costs more for Australia), you actually don't have too many options at all.

If I were to rank all available racing wheels right now, the cheapest level would be the ones without force-feedback. This would include Thrustmaster's T80 and Ferrari 458 Spider Racing Wheel, as well as the Hori Apex. All of these wheels are complete shit, not to sound harsh.

LEVEL 1

The first level of wheels that are good are the ones with gear driven or gear/belt hybrid force feedback. This means that when motors turn the wheel to provide information about traction or oversteer (examples), it may feel "notchy" and loud. They still get the job done. When only listing ones compatible with the Xbox One, these include:

Logitech G29 ($400 AUS + free shipping) - has 3 pedals and comfortable grip, but very bad gear-driven force-feedback

Thrustmaster TMX ($240.83 AUS + $90.13 shipping = $320 AUS) - has 2 pedals, which you say is O.K. Has better force-feedback with a hybrid belt drive/gear driven combo. It is cheaper than Logitech because Logitech is so popular. Do not be fooled, this is an objectively better wheel in almost every way.

LEVEL 2

The second level of wheels are the ones that are only belt-driven. These are much smoother quieter, and detailed than Level 1 wheels. When only listing ones compatible with the Xbox One, there is only one wheel base:

Thrustmaster TX Servo Base ($358.41 AUS + $58.30 shipping = $416 AUS)

However, the TX allows switching of wheel rims. You can buy the base by itself (above) and need to buy an individual wheel rim, or you can buy it in a set with pedals and a rim. The only option here seems to be getting a set, since buying the individual parts would be too costly. You've got two options here for a bundle:

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition ($559 AUS + free shipping)

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Leather Edition Premium ($699.95 AUS + free shipping)

While both wheels are mechanically identical, I would have to recommend the Leather edition. It comes with a much higher quality wheel rim (leather and not rubber) and also has a much more durable pedal set (3 pedals with metal plates). Still, the Italia edition TX would be a good choice if you can't spend the extra money. It is better than the G29 and TMX.

LEVEL 3

Since I saw you talking to some other users about the Fanatec CSL Elite, I might as well discuss these wheels despite it being outside your price range. The Level 3 wheels all use belt-drive systems as well, but are smoother, faster, and quieter than their Level 2 counterparts.

Fanatec Xbox One Competition Pack ($1,109.90 AUS + ??? shipping)

Thrustmaster TS-XW Racer Sparco P310 ($1,099 AUS + ??? shipping)

Both wheels cost around the same and are mechanically almost identical. However, the Thrustmaster has a nicer rim (in my opinion) and has 3 pedals. Still, you should decide this on your own.

I hope this helped a great deal, and have fun with whatever wheel you choose! Cheers

u/glm3141 · 3 pointsr/simracing

it's a matter of price in the end, but here's my ramblings.

The Logitech path sets you back $300 for a complete set.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Dual-Motor-Feedback-Driving-Responsive/dp/B016JBE8LU/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1539590704&sr=1-4&keywords=logitech%2Bg29&th=1

However, there's no upgrade path from there, and if you decide to eventually upgrade to another wheel, you'll need an adapter for both the pedals and the shifter. Additionally, the FFB is not as good as the T300RS or equivalent systems and the shifter is worse than the TH8A, and is 6+R, not 7+R.

The Thrustmaster equivalent would be a T300RS or TX System (they are apparently equivalent).
Including the Shifter, it sets you back about $550.

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Racing-Wheel-Leather-Premium-Official/dp/B0151K6FPC/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1539590463&sr=1-1&keywords=thrustmaster%2Btx&th=1

Comparing to the Logitech, the FFB is better. From what I've heard, the pedals are similar in quality.

I've used the G27 shifter and I own the TH8A and the thrustmaster is quite a bit better, and can be put in sequential mode as well. Additionally, it can be used as an analogue handbrake, which is pretty cool for the price. The shifter can also be connected by USB, so that's a component you'd be able to keep should you decide to upgrade in the future.

Also, Thrustmaster makes a variety of bases, some more high-end than what you're looking at, so you'd have an upgrade path without switching manufacturers and having to find a solution for pedals.

As for the TMX Pro, the wheel + the T3pa pedals + the shifter cost around $415. (look at the proposed sets)

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Force-Feedback-racing-wheel-WINDOWS/dp/B01CI97DNM/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1539591097&sr=1-3&keywords=thrustmaster+tmx+pro

However, I would not buy the T3pa's separately. If you buy separate pedals, I'd go for the Fanatec CSL Elite Pedals with the Loadcell Brake. They are more expensive, but a lot better and have USB connectivity, should you switch manufacturers in the future.

https://www.fanatec.com/us-en/pedals/csl-elite-pedals-lc-usa.html

I hope I've not confused you too much.

In conclusion:

Logitech
-> Ok Force Feedback, Ok Pedals, Meh Shifter $300 | No Upgrade Path

T300 (VG TX) incl T3pa + TH8A
-> Good Force Feedback, Ok Pedals, Good Shifter $550 | Upgrade Path for Wheel base/Rims

TMX Pro + Fanatec CSL Elite LC + TH8A ->
Ok Force Feedback, Great Pedals, Good Shifter $550 | Upgrade Path unlimited, all separately connected via USB.

All that said, it depends a lot on how serious you want to get. If you already know that you're not going to go full sim-racing, the Logitech is going to be plenty good enough for you.

However, if you want to start sim-racing seriously, and are looking at games such as iRacing, RaceRoom, rFactor, pCars, Assetto Corsa and the like, good pedals make you quicker than good wheels

u/Silidistani · 1 pointr/starcitizen

I was skeptical but hopeful for years, until I saw Hurston and Lorville get released, and I finally jumped in both-feet during the end of the last Anniversary sale. Player-generated clips like this one and this one definitely helped convince me... I mean look at that, it's all actually there in the game, nothing is a backdrop only for viewing from that spot on some map, that sun isn't rising, the earth-sized planet you are on is spinning in space.

My biggest suggestion: get a proper HOTAS, or at least a stick with a throttle on it and some good base-area buttons - I use an old Saitek X-52 that interestingly enough is being re-released in a few weeks. There are some serious mil-sim level ones out there too. The T-Flight Hotas X and T16000M are popular for the budget-minded (although Star Citizen will rapidly change your mind about what "sensible expenditure" in a game means lol). Get a used one if you want a killer one but can't afford new (seriously though, $60 man, very worth it), but it's a huge help not having to go to keyboard commands for anything flight-related, including targeting, countermeasures, scanners, thruster controls, etc. When hopping out of your flight seat (either to do something in your ship or get out of it entirely), just have the mouse and keyboard positioned to either side of the flight stick, easy. You'll use the mouse in the cockpit a fair bit too, to interact with the MFDs sometimes for things like requesting landing clearance, changing MFD functions, overclocking components on the ship, etc,. It's the most immersive sci-fi flight/FPS/society game I've ever seen.

I'd highly recommend to get in as soon as they announce Update 3.5, adding the entirely new planet ArcCorp, its main landing area for spaceships Area 18, several moons, and the long-awaited new flight model, go Public Live in a few more days. Fly your starter ship (I recommend the Avenger Stalker starter ship or the Cutlass Black package for the bit of cargo space you get, helps make a little money and can still fight ), enjoy a bit of mission running, exploration etc, and learn the world, and when the next massive Anniversary Sale comes around in November you'll know what ships you really want and can make informed decisions, as the sales they have at that time are awesome.

Whatever starter package you get, it'll need to be a "Game Package" that includes the base game as well, and after that one-time buy you just buy standalone ships or packages if you want to pay real money, or you can buy many of them in-game for game-money (UEC) if you make enough (many good ones are millions of UEC). The advantage of paying real money is that they will be with you forever - as they make major updates CIG usually resets all accounts to starter levels again, and you lose anything you earned in that version of Alpha - but you also have many advantages in Alpha that will not be present in the final game so still worth it to buy cheaper ships in-game IMO.

Cheap, or expensive, is relative. What budget do you have to work with? Basically, I would say in total for the rig, around $700-800 can get you something pretty decent, then you're looking for the actual console/PC and the games themselves as an additional price.

For a fairly cheap, but still best bang-for-buck rig, I would recommend:

  • Any of the T300 + T3PA bundles, for example the T300 Ferrari Alcantara Edition - Great wheel, best entry level wheel by far. With decent pedals, optional brake mod included that, imo, improves the feel a lot. Clutch included.

  • TH8A shifter - Fairly cheap, all things considered,

  • Simetik K2 cockpit - Very sturdy and customizable for its price, and also doesn't have that annoying bar down the middle that basically inhibits you from heel-and-toe downshifting that most of the other cheap rigs have.

All in all this comes down to $885 as of right now, if you want to save a little bit you could go for the original T300 GT Edition instead and it'll be $817.

The Simetik K2 is by far the best rig you can get in that pricebracket, but if you must save some more either skip the shifter for now or get a Playseat Challenge, it isn't the sturdiest but again, I do not recommend getting a rig with the pole in between your legs, I would personally rather play at a desk and an office chair than that, as it, at least for me, makes it really hard to heel-and-toe, and I love racing old DTM and GT cars with manual gearboxes and couldn't do without that.
u/Ramp_Rat · 7 pointsr/redorchestra

sure, I'll copy/paste here:

The higher-end ones tend to be what's called a H.O.T.A.S (Hands On Throttle And Stick). essentially this is a packaged deal with a joystick and throttle quadrant, and is useful for not having to take your eyes (or hands) off the throttle and stick while flying. Some of these can be expensive like the Thrustmaster Warthog, considered the high end of the sticks. The issue with this as well, is it's modeled off a A-10 Warthog's inputs, so you'll also need to get rudder pedals as well since there is no Z-axis twist on the stick.
For more budget options, I have heard really great things about the T-16000 M. You can also buy the stick and throttle separately if you dont have the cash for both right now.

Another company is VKB, a Russian company but uses magnetic "MARS" sensors. I actually use their Black Mamba and love it, however the item has since been discontinued and the company itself is hard to get hold of. They currently have affordable sticks modeled on the German KG12 - flight stick used in BF109's and FW 190's (although no throttle quadrant with it). Available on Amazon its called Gladiator

Saitek makes several sticks, however they're in a transitioning period. They were just bought-out by Logitech and some people have complained about quality issues with their newer sticks and lack of customer support, so I'd only recommend them if you can get a great deal on a stick on sale, or possibly a used one for cheap. Their models are the X52 Pro, X-55, and X-65. I had the 52 Pro and never had any issues, but its one of those buy beware moments with them right now.

And then there's really affordable sticks that work fine too, such as the logitech extreme 3d pro and Thrustmaster T-Flight X. These are reliable sticks that lack some of the fancy things like buttons and dials for radiator management for example. I know guys who fly using these and love it.

Another thing that is highly recommended to get, but is not required to play the game, is called a Track IR. If you watch in my video, I'm swiveling my head back and forth to check my 6, and make sure theres no enemy aircraft diving on us. I'm not using the mouse, or any input to look around, rather I have a clip on my headset that uses IR sensors to turn my head in game without having to take my hands off the HOTAS. Here's a video of how it works. Again, not necessary to buy, but one of those things to hope to get down the road. There are free alternatives called Freetrack which uses a webcam, I think. I havent messed with that but I know a few guys who do use it and are happy with it.

I think thats a fairly decent summary. Feel free to PM with any questions, or check out our group's forums if you'd like to do some more research

"BEST" probably the THrustmaster warthog Hotas, but also the most expensive (I just bought the joystick alone for 270 to use in my HOSAS setup, can't wait till it delivers on friday)

"best VALUE" probably the thrustmaster 16000m combo. The thrustmaster stuff seems to be the only sticks that use the "HALLS" system, and between that and regular sticks, the difference is night and day (i've compared it to CH flightsticks, microsoft, and logitech stuff...)

My suggestion is to consider HOSAS as well (hands on stick and stick), as I enjoy the number of analog degrees of freedom a joystick for the left hand provides. (16000m can be modified for the left hand, the warthog joystick, and many others, are right hand only.

As for VR, SC isn't really there yet, but I have a vive and know it's awesome. The recent price drops on the oculus are going to drive a lot of people their direction, but I don't regret buying the Vive in the least, and might still do it if I were buying today (but to be fair, i hate facebook).

as for touchscreens, there's some apps for android tablets that allow you to use them as "additional screens" which have game controls on them. It's like bringing one of the in game ship control panels into real life. They're super neat, but I don't actually use them, so I don't have a solid recommendation. Check out the Roccat Powergrid.

u/Redwolf7 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Everybody is providing info on the listing so if I may, mind if I question your choice?

If you have the money a dual stick and rudder pedals setup will give you much better freedom of movement IMO compared to one stick and a throttle and it makes controlling the ship with FA Off much easier if you ever decide to explore that option. Just make sure, if you consider my suggestion, that you get a set of pedals with toe brakes and set those for throttle/reverse.

It is very easy to coordinate if you're used to driving a car and having two sticks will give you analog control of pitch/roll as well as translational thrusters. It's very easy to match speed with a Sidewinder or Hauler in my Eagle while still keeping my nose (and guns) pointed up at his cargo hatch but after a while it almost becomes like a whole extra level of freedom in flight control.

My personal setup consists of 2x Thrustmaster T16000M flight sticks (which are incredibly precise and well built for the cost), CH Pro rudder pedals and Track IR and I think it's awesome. I also use Voice Attack for some functions like lights, hardpoints and cargo scoop as well as power distribution so I don't need to move my hands off the controls. Just some food for thought, links below.

Sticks: http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-2960706-Thrustmaster-T-16000M-Flight/dp/B001S0RTU0

Pedals: http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-Pedals-Simulator-300-111/dp/B0000512IE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1420480922&sr=1-1

TrackIR: http://www.amazon.com/TrackIr-Premium-Head-Tracking-Gaming-Pc/dp/B0029M6VKA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1420480970&sr=1-1&keywords=TrackIR

It's possibly more investment than you're ready for but if you end up with the HOTAS and feel like you need more control just keep it in mind. While you can't use that particular stick without having the throttle I don't see why you couldn't set it aside and place another stick down if you wanted to go that route. Personally I ended up replacing my old stick with 2 new ones but I also have someone to hand my old stick down to. (I got my brother Elite for Christmas so we could play together) ;)

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck and fly safe Commander!

u/BraveSirHenry · 10 pointsr/hoggit

I'm assuming you have a T.Flight HOTAS X, which is what I used to use. It's a good HOTAS for the simpler planes like the SU-25T, but you're going to have to get good at using modifiers, or make some concessions.

I'd highly recommend rebinding the slew controls for the TV to the 8 way you're using for trim, or create a modifier for it. DCS was not designed for large amounts of keyboard use, using the keyboard to move all your sensors is not advised.

"I feel like controls could be a bit simpler"

The SU-25 is really as simple as it gets, the aircraft is not fully modelled. The full fidelity modules have the whole cockpit modelled, so all the switches and stuff actually work. I don't want to sound like a "gate keeper", more people getting into DCS is always a good thing, but DCS isn't easy, you need to know what you're in for. It's going to take a lot of time, you're not going to be good in a week, or even a month. Practise practise practise.

You don't specifically need a really good HOTAS for DCS, but it really helps. As waffle also said, don't put your keyboard behind your screen if you need to use it. If you want a good HOTAS recommendation the T.16000M is very good, I own pretty much all the modules, and it's been perfect for all of them.

I have recommended this to many people, and I honestly think it is the best set up on the market right now: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS-Flight-Pack/dp/B01N2PE8CZ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522886090&sr=8-3&keywords=thrustmaster+t16000m

I see some people saying to get World Traffic. I think you would have a better time doing something like VATSIM than using World Traffic.

Planes I would recommend:

Flight Factor A320 - Pricey, but it pays you can see the high quality you are paying for. In my opinion, it is the best plane on the market in any flight sim.

Flight Factor 757 Extended - Another one of my favorites. I enjoy having the passenger and cargo variants, I am super into flying cargo runs.

Few others things, other than planes:

If you fly in the US, KSLC by ShortFinal is an amazing payware scenery. ShortFinal also known as MisterX on the forums, is, in my opinion, the best scenery maker in X-Plane.

Sometimes the best things for this game are free. If you have the storage space, and you think your game can handle it, download Ortho4XP and get some ortho scenery.

If I think of anything else I will add another comment

u/LoreCannon · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

First thing I will tell you off the bat, get something that's in your budget.

Second... let's talk about what type of setup you want...

HANDS ON THROTTLE AND STICK
-
HOTAS
-

You have multiple options, starting with the Thrustmaster HOTAS-X.

At around $50, it gives a satisfying first hotas experience.

Moving up the ladder, you get to the T16000M and it's FCS pack.

If you are lucky, you can get this pack on sale for as low as $89.99 on Amazon, and it offers a great package with plenty of toggles and buttons to fully accommodate E:D's controls. You can even add pedals later on down the line, or pick them up as part of one big package.

Further up the price ladder is the X52 suite of controls. Two options are available, in the flavors of the X52 FCS at around $150 and the X52 PRO at around $200. The differences between the two are less pronounced than the jump from the HOTAS-X to the T16000, but it has some "nice" features for scripting and supposedly higher quality components.

Granted, even after Logitech purchased Saitek, the build quality on these former Saitek sticks is ... so-so.

Another great option is CH's products.

Throttle.

Stick.

CH PRO PEDALS

Despite other offerings in the HOTAS world between the X52 Pro, and CH offerings and higher caliber offerings - ignore them.

The X-55 and X-56 are MESSES when it comes to build quality, and it's a crapshoot if you get one that will last.

Your next HOTAS offering is going to be the Thrustmaster Warthog - but you will absolutely need pedals. Which means you're looking at offerings from CH, like the CH PRO PEDALS.

And if you get the warthog, I HIGHLY recommend you use Aussiedroid's scripts and bindings. They are intuitive and utilize the entirety of the throttle and stick.

If it's in your budget, I recommend getting MFG Crosswinds.

Also, VKB makes some T-rudder design pedals that work well.

VKB T-Rudders

However, before anyone tells you differently, or says pedals are shit for yaw. I AGREE, DON'T USE THEM TO YAW. Put yaw on your stick left and right, pitch up and down, and ROLL on your pedals. Right pedal forward, roll right, and left pedal forward roll left. Anyone who does it differently is crippling themselves, especially in PVP. This is a space sim, we don't have to fly space ships like we do aircraft. ROLL ON PEDALS, I'LL SAY IT AGAIN.

Past this point you have offerings from VirPil and VKB, both of which make the best of the best products. They both have better gimbal designs, and stick designs, and come in around $400 for a stick. However, there is no throttle currently, as of this moment, produced by either.

Alternative Setups
------------------
HANDS ON STICK AND STICK
-
HOSAS
-

One way of side stepping the pedals situation is running dual-sticks, or hands on stick and stick. This has a slightly higher initial cost than most of the cheaper HOTAS options, but also negates the needs for pedals. The caveat being you need sticks that can be used in both left and right hands.

But thankfully, Thrustmaster has you covered. They offer the T16000M in a dual-stick package. Or you can purchase them separately.

You can also buy two separate Warthog sticks, at around $200 each, and get Okona (/u/cavortingwebeasties) over at dualsticks.com to convert one over.

VirPil's Mongoose can be setup for ambi use, and VKB will be announcing a left handed Gunfighter grip at SOME point. VKB Gunfighter can be found here.

u/sip_sigh_repeat · 3 pointsr/StreetFighter

There are really only three reasons to build a stick, and short-term cost isn't one of them:

  1. Build quality. A custom stick can use an all-metal case or even wood, both of which tend to be more durable than plastics found in many popular commercial sticks.

  2. Parts. Custom sticks are generally very easy to modify, all of the hardware and PCBs can be replaced easily. Couple this with a good case and it's not uncommon for your arcade stick to last multiple generations of consoles, with just a PCB upgrade. Customs sticks allow you to use the hardware you prefer, the layout you prefer, and you can find PCBs that work on more systems than are usually available in retail sticks.

  3. It's your own. You can not only customize the art, but the look of the stick itself. The best custom sticks are amazing pieces of art in their own right when the case, art, and hardware all complement each other. Many commercial sticks you can't change the art, and even for the few where that's possible, you are still stuck with the default case.

Because of the first two reasons, a custom stick can be a great long-term investment, since a new PCB is much, much cheaper than a new high-quality stick.

In the short-term though, it costs as much as a high end stick, especially if your case is all-metal or other high cost solutions.

In your case I would recommend the new Mayflash sticks, like this one or something like the Qanba Drone.

Both sticks you could upgrade with a little work, but are in any case good starter sticks. You might find them a little small or too light, and the parts aren't the highest quality, but it's probably best to start with one of these sub $100 options, then if you are enjoying stick a lot, move to a high end sanwa stick for ~$250.
u/Nubsly- · 15 pointsr/starcitizen

As many people have mentioned, Star Citizen is still an in-development title, and there are lots of bugs and will likely continue to be lots of bugs for quite a while.

That being said, there are lots of people who are OK with this and are able to enjoy themselves, some fall on the other end of the spectrum and get really frustrated so it's worth keeping in mind that there is a 14 day refund policy. If you or he decides you aren't satisfied with your purchase, you can submit for a refund at any time in that 14 day window.

If you're still with us and you want to go ahead and buy him something, here's four strong options for you to consider:

1) Buy the Mustang Alpha Starter Package for $45 - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Mustang-Alpha-Starter-Pack

2) Buy the Mustang Alpha Starter Package for $45 - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Mustang-Alpha-Starter-Pack

Then upgrade it to an Avenger Titan using this $20 CCU (Cross Chassis Upgrade is an item that you will find in your hangar on the website after purchase and can then apply it to the Mustang Alpha to convert it into an Avenger Titan) - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Upgrades/Mustang-Alpha-To-Avenger-Titan-Upgrade

Most players in Star Citizen have owned at one point, or currently own an Avenger because it is incredibly versatile for its price allowing you to do both combat and hauling stuff while not being paper thin. It's also the one I'd recommend the most for him. He can always use the CCU system to upgrade his ship to something else later once he has a better idea of what he wants to do.

3) If he's likely to mainly do combat, then perhaps the Arrow would be a good choice $90 - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Anvil-Arrow-Starter-Pack

It will be noticeably more combat capable than the Avenger Titan, but it doesn't have any cargo space. It is a very popular ship right now for combat pilots.

4) If you really want to splurge, then get the Cutlass Black Package $115 - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Cutlass-Black

The Cutlass Black is larger than all the other mentioned ships and it's the first real offering that gives you decent multi-crew features. It has an interior you can walk around in with a couple beds (beds are used for logging off if you're out in space instead of at a station), It has a good sized cargo bay that's great for traders. It has a copilot seat which can be used by a second person to help manage shields etc..

It also comes with a turret for some extra firepower. It has plenty of teeth, and you can't really go wrong with it.

If he really ends up liking the game, he should look into picking up some flight hardware (Joysticks etc..). I'd recommend either the t16000m FCS HOTAS $130

Or the dual t16000m setup $115

You can also just buy a single t16000m joystick for around $60 and then buy a second one later. They can be flipped to lefty pretty easily, so don't feel like you need to buy two right away.

In terms of bang for buck, there is no contest compared to these in the budget arena. I personally fly with two sticks, some people prefer the stick plus throttle.

In closing, my personal advice would be to buy him the Mustang Alpha ($45) and the CCU to the Avenger Titan ($20), then tell him you'll contribute X dollars towards some flight hardware (Joystick/throttle etc) or further ship CCU's once he knows what he wants.

Best of luck on your decision making!

Holy wow thank you for the in depth response. Just really started getting into true sim racing and the whole community has been awesome so far.
I've been using a crap wheel/controller so I'm basically looking at my first true set up. That means Logitech and others are out because I want to be in an ecosystem I can upgrade and grow over time. That seems to mean Fanatec or Thristmaster right now.
With that in mind , I'm comparing integrated products, base wheel and pedals together. The best prices I've found on new products so far have been through Fanatec direct and Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Ferrari-Alcantara-Racing-playstation-4/dp/B015KJ0SES
https://www.fanatec.com/us-en/bundle/product;bundle_id;153

They both have awesome upsides with huge upgrades I can make over time, which is really the most important thing to me right now. If I wind up living and breathing sim racing, I'll eventually want to go direct drive, but I don't have any plans to do so as of yet.
Plus, in all honesty, if I don't stick with sim racing for the very long term (which I think is unlikely, but always a possibility), the Elite and T300 both seem to retain their value pretty well, definitely better than the current crop of Logitech and other brands.

Thoughts on the above would be awesome! Thanks again.

Logitech G29 - good value for money, tried and tested tech but it is a bit old being gear driven and can be a bit ratchety compared to a belt driven wheel if you care about these minor things. Pedals included are good especially at the G29 price point. Basically you can't go wrong here.

Thrustmaster T300 with standard pedals

T300RS with T3PA pedals - A bit more expensive than the logitech G29 and Thrustmaster have their fair share of horror stories regarding product defects but over all it's a solid wheel base for the majority. The T300 wheel base is a good wheel of choice for sim racing as It's belt driven so the steering is somewhat smoother and you have the modular steering rim option, just make sure to get a T300 package that comes with the T3PA or T3PA pro pedals. There's also the T150 which is a great starter wheel if you want a cheaper option than the T300 but you won't be able to take advantage of Thrustmasters modular wheel system in future and again, the standard pedals included aren't great.

Fanatec CSL Elite - Not wanting to leave the most expensive "starter" wheel base option out... The Fanatec CSL Elite wheel base for the PS4 will come close to blowing your budget of $500 and doesn't include pedals but it's another option on the table if you are interested in splashing the cash :).

I recommend to check ebay and any other buy/sell websites that you know if you're happy to buy used in case anyone who bought a nice sim rig or wheel and didn't like sim racing as much as they thought and are selling good kit for cheap. Happens more than you'd think!

Hopefully this helps somewhat and you can stay below that $500 mark.

I’m about 5 months into DCS. I played some flight sims when I was a kid, 20 years ago, in the Jane’s F/A-18 days, but nothing until DCS. I bought the Flaming Cliffs pack of modules and the A-10C and learned to fly the F-15C mostly at first but slowly read through the 600+ page manual for the A-10C and worked through the training missions and a few campaign missions. The F-15C is great because it doesn’t take too long to learn and you can be having fun shooting down AI flankers in a 10 solid hours of learning and start to get into tactics, the A-10C is definitely the most complicated thing I’ve ever learned for fun. I usually spend a good hr working on A-10C avionics training, then reward myself by jumping in the F-15 when I sit down for a session.

If you do jump into something like the A-10C, I’d recommend getting a quality HOTAS with lots of hat switches, trying to learn the intricacies of avionics and remember keyboard shortcuts and button modifiers is a very big complexity multiplier. I started with a cheap stick then bought the Thrustmaster t16000m and Throttle which works great for F-15, but isn’t quite up to the A-10, so I bought the Warthog stick and use it with the throttle from the t16000.

I have a logitech 3d extreme, I pair it with this https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-TWCS-Throttle-Controller-2960754/dp/B01L28LVUG and I'm very happy. I'm not sure what you mean by thrustmaster 16x I googled that and had no results.

I personally didn't really like strike suit zero, It just has no feeling of freedom for me just do mission A mission B mission C yeah you can kind of customize your loadout but I think the strengh of a spacegame should be your ability to go wherever you want.

So if you want a story driven game, kind of reminisent of halo but in spaceships get SSO.

If you want more freedom to say, mine, Trade/smuggle, Explore (99.x% of the systems have never been visited in ED), Pirate people/pcs, Bounty hunt pirates, join a faction/megapower and go to war get ED.

I played with just the logitech 3d for a while and it's good enough to let you know if you like it before spending more money for the full hotas. It's just kind of awkward flipping that little throttle around while pushing buttons with your fingers.

""I'm curious what I actually have to buy for Elite.""

Just start with Elite Dangerous, if you like it spend the additional 30 on Horizons it gives you access to engineers (Grindy upgrades for your ship) Planetary landings (only on non atmospheric planets, you can also bring a little buggy thing) Guardians (ship launched fighters, little NPC ships to protect you or you can pilot them yourself if you want)

After the 2.4 update which is mostly about thargoids (aliens that we are probably going to be fighting a lot) the next expansions will probably be another payment, I heard they have committed to a 10 year development cycle they kind of sell games as a service? If that makes sense, I'm happy to pay it assuming we keep getting new content.

And yes even with little time to play you'll still have a good time, it's not like you have to log on constantly it'll be there when you get back to it.

EDIT: also with horizons you can do passenger transport missions, basically haul rich people from A to B or maybe they want to do tourism and you go ABCDEFG. Pays well.

u/1sie · 9 pointsr/flightsim

I see someone already mention DCS, but since you mention something to ease in to the world of flight sims, i wouldn't recommend it, at least for now. DCS is as hardocore sim as it gets for civilians.

Then you have FSX, a good compromise between realism/accessibility, though it is kind of a dead game that has no further development.

Another alternative is Take on Helicopters, from Bohemia Interactive, the makers of ARMA.
Decent flight model, lots of mission content that actually puts the flying to use, and comes at a great price. Only downside is it needs a PC with a very good processor to run smoothly.

ARMA3, i suppose is also an alternative, it uses the same flight model, got tons of choppers and has better performance nowadays cause its always being optimized (still needs good CPU though). It´s a military sandbox with much more to do than just flying (infantry, all sorts of vehicles, it's huge) and the flight model has 2 versions, easy, and advances (taken from take on helicopters), the sceneries (maps) are gorgeous and very detailed and i truly enjoy flying in it.

-------------------------

As for controls; the [new thrustmaster HOTAS] (https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA) came out recently, has wonderful reviews. If it´s anything like it's predecessor (which i own), it's unbeatable in price/quality ratio,

I have no words for this. This has to be the best giveaway I have ever seen. At this point I'm more curious to the profit you made then actually entering this giveaway! I hope that one day I can do something this big, but as of now life is expensive.

I seriously have no clue what to ask for. Of course I have some big wishes and such, but I'm gonna ask for something small. Well.. small compared to the other requests :D

I love driving games and I have been playing a lot of American Truck Simulator lately, but I'm stuck with my controller or keyboard. I would love to make an upgrade. Using an actual steering wheel, pedals and maybe even shifting gears would make my experience a lot better.

I would be happy with this one: Thrustmaster Force Wheel

But if you feel really generous the Logitech G27 Racing Wheel would most likely make me cry out happiness!

Whether I don't win or not doesn't even matter. What you are doing is something I haven't experienced on the internet before and I have been here for quite some years now! So once again thank you for doing this and I wish you the best in life!

u/Panthros · 3 pointsr/hoggit

I am new to DCS, a long time flight sim nut and working on my pilot's license. I bought many of the planes (A-10C, F/A-18C, FC3 and the F-5E). I could not decide so it was better to buy them all since they were on sale lol! What I found out was the F-18 and the F-5E are the two I enjoy with the F-5E what I am enjoying most. I feel more like I am having to work more to fly it but in a good way. Fun to startup but not excessive, fun to fly and land. I think I actually like that I do not have all of the toys. The aggressors campaign for the F-5E has been fun to learn on since I also bought the Nevada map. The F/A-18C is a weapons platform, but the real joy is taking off and landing on a carrier.

I bought a cheap HOTAS as I just could not fly with the XBOX controller. It know that it is not the Warthog HOTAS (maybe Christmas 2019 now that there is the F/A-18 add-on stick), but for $70, I cannot stress how much better it is without a deep investment. I got a friend in on the game and he got the A-10C because he wants close quarters bombing and strafing runs and he bought the PS4 version of my stick and loving it.

Yo my dude. Welcome to Elite.

Question 1: It is honestly up to you how you prefer to play. Do you want the Wild West in multiplayer? Or do you want to just relax and do some space things without being interrupted. I honestly do both depending on the mood im in. Your pilot and assets are implemented into both so honestly it is what you are feeling at the time.

Question 2: You should get it day one. Elite is straight up doo doo without the season pass. It basically adds planetary landing, more ships, engineering, and a ton of other things including all future updates this year. I would say it is basically mandatory.

Question 3: You can but you either have to get Voice Attack and do the free or paid version, which is a seperate add on you can get on steam for 12 bucks.

Also I would recommend picking up a flight stick eventually if you enjoy the game. The experience is so much better than mouse and keyboard. I started off with this .https://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitech-extreme-3d-pro-gaming-joystick-silver-black/5796515.p?skuId=5796515
After about 100 hours I decided to get this flight stick as it was designed with elite in mind and much better built

Compared to what are commonly called "arcade" racing games, "sim" racing games typically require more precision & better timing, and are thus considerably less forgiving & more difficult to control. I think people who enjoy the challenge and are willing to spend a significant amount of time practicing smartly can probably reach a somewhat safe (for others sharing the track with you) level of competency within a few weeks. Becoming competitive, however, can take much longer. There are lots of free resources online for learning how to improve.

Fanatical.com currently has a sale on Project CARS 2 for $28.79 (52%-off) - and there's also a free demo on Steam to try (which I recommend before you spend anything). Assetto Corsa is $29.99 (and a few times a year, it usually goes on sale for less). Both games have an offline practice mode & a single-player career mode to learn in before venturing into their online multi-player modes. Please do other racers a favor and avoid going online until after you've developed a solid grasp on safely controlling your car in traffic. ;)

The Logitech G29 wheel is popular (currently available new for $269 at Amazon.com). The ThrustMaster T150 is a budget-priced entry-level wheel (currently available new for $200 at Amazon.com). As long as you're not too rough with either of those, they should last long enough for you reach a point where you know if sim racing is something you want to go further with.

Unless you've got lots of disposable income to throw around, I wouldn't recommend spending more until after you become somewhat competitive with a budget setup.

Good luck & have fun!

To truly appreciate the Huey, I'd highly recommend at least a stick and pedals. The Thrustmaster T16000M has the best sensors in its price range and a relatively light centering force, so it would be good for helos. The old Microsoft FFB2 is also good if you can find one. Pedals would also greatly improve the experience; a set such as the Thrustmaster TFRP would suffice. While a throttle is nice, the slider on the base of the stick can function as throttle for the time being.

As for head tracking, the TrackIR5 is pretty pricey. The DelanClip is cheaper, and it has a guide on how to use the free software.

DCS Modules go on sale all the time, so I'd wait until the next one (probably christmas) to pick up Huey.

For me, headtracking and rudder pedals improved my experience tenfold. Even if it takes time, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase them if it is for the happiness and well being of your father.

Well, I should have done my research a little better. I'm not very happy with my game pad. I did pay $15 but since then the price increased to $18. https://www.amazon.com/Matricom-Wireless-Rechargeable-Bluetooth-Compatible/dp/B015YF3YZ8

This game pad is probably better suited for Android. I had to use special software to use it in morrowind.. And even now, button presses do two different things. So I don't recommend it.

I have a 360 controller that works well but requires a receiver plugged in. The Xbox one controller works perfectly with Bluetooth and w10.. It costs a bit more. I also would love a $50 steam controller because it has mouse emulation and is specially suited and built for PC games. Xpadder and an Xbox controller can probably do mouse emulation also. If you need help with configuration let me know. I use some weird program for my cheap gamepad. And it's not enough, I need to fix it more.

I ordered my friend a $20 bluetooth keyboard with trackpad. He's going to use a w10 tablet as a htpc and I think this is perfect for it. Just waiting on micro HDMI cable.

A side use.. I want to practice and learn coding. I had a keyboard case that fits 7/8 inch tablets and plugs right in to micro USB. When I find it, I will have this tablet set up like a laptop to learn coding.

Entirely depends on your budget - but at the very least something with Force Feedback, like the Logitech g29 with shifter - that's a very common setup. $200-450 is the figure you'd be looking at - depending on if what you want is on sale. A bit cheaper if you don't want a shifter and want to use the paddle shifters behind the wheels.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G29-Driving-Shifter-Bundle/dp/B016JBE8LU $299

I chose one a little higher priced, the Thrustmaster T300RS GT edition (3 pedal setup not the cheaper 2 pedal one without the clutch) as well as the TH8A shifter. I got the wheel on sale, full price on shifter. https://i.imgur.com/Y8Gg5oO.jpg

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T300-RS-Racing-Wheel-PlayStation/dp/B01M1L2NRL?th=1 $388 + https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-PC-PS3-PS4-Xbox-One/dp/B005L0Z2BQ $149

These wheels are much more than toys. You can feel the wheels on the road, traction loss, how much torque the cars have, if you slam into a wall the wheels can damn near rip your hands off (you can change the % of feedback to lower it). It makes the experience in VR feel super real. I'd say a wheel carries as much importance in VR racing as the headset does.

The craziest feeling I've gotten so far as just sitting at the start of a race idling in a '66 Mustang. The entire hood of this car is shaking back and forth like Dom's muscle cars in Fast and the Furious.....and the WHEEL is shaking left and right with the car exactly how you would expect something with that much power to. That thing was like 100% torque and it felt amazing.

Even if it takes some saving, I highly recommend one of them - although I would definitely wait until Black Friday to get $100 ish off of either one you choose. The sale prices for these are quite tolerable when they occur.

A stand for the wheel is much nicer than a table for mounting, but they can be pricey as well. From $100 and up. My Apiga AP2 stand was $280 but worth every penny to not have a bar in between your legs. Only $240 now and supports most wheels. https://www.amazon.com/APIGA-Foldable-Racing-Simulator-gearshift-ALL/dp/B00XBPYUIY

I bought the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick when I first pledged for this game back in 2013, and then realized it was a long way from being flyable

I kind of forgot about it and used M+KB since the game became playable, but recently I remembered I owned it and have been playing with it almost exclusively for the last few days. I'm no expert with one so this is my first impressions

Its surprisingly not too bad for such a cheap stick, and after a lot of practice I'm not -that- much worse than when using a M+KB. I've nearly got my Old Vanduul lap times down to what they were before, and my dog fighting is about as good as normal. And besides the obvious performance differences, it sure is fun to fly with

I do plan to eventually buy a better one (this is what I'm leaning towards when its in stock), but for now its surprisingly good for how cheap it is, and I would actually recommend it to someone who is really on a budget. It does take time to configure though, I recommend this layout and this curve based on my limited testing and what felt natural to me. Without the proper curve its nearly unplayable. I think the only big difference in control layouts is I swapped the afterburner for IFCS buttons, because with racing I needed it available easily

I also use Voice Attack which I have mapped to a whole bunch of commands. I can show you what I have so far if you are interested but its on my home computer

u/Mr_Burning · 4 pointsr/simracing

T300 Alcantara Bundle is the wheel to get. Its good all around, good base, good wheel and also pretty good pedals. Should be everything you need to get you started.

The T300 is the succesor to the T500 and its a better base in virtually everything.

iRacing is the place to go for public online simracing. Its expensive, but has a good penalty system that forces clean racing. It's good competition.

Alternatively you can also look for a league and race with them in any game really. Most serious simracing with fair opponents and no ramming etc is done in leagues or iRacing. It's not impossible to find good racing publicly in games, but often it has some rammers or the like.

There are many leagues out there, personally I race with Racedepartment but there are many more groups around.

Best game on how to learn is a difficult one, any game can do really ,the fundamentals of driving fast (and safe) are the same both in real life as well as in any simracing game.

I'd recommend watching this video on racing fundamentals, it covers everything to get you started. Don't expect to be the new Max Verstappen in just a few hours though :)

u/Seth0351 · 6 pointsr/hoggit

Whats your current specs?

I'd say avoid VR initially, I personally think it is the better overall experience but its a bit tough to learn DCS in and costs more overall in terms of hardware and performance.

So for under $1k budget, I'd get something like this if you can fit it in your space, or you could spend a bit more and get the [warthog]
(https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T16000M-FCS-Flight-Pack/dp/B01N2PE8CZ/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=N77385WVH3Q2D79PYPY2) which is a great setup, just no pedals.

Then, trackir or Open track for sure. And yes, you described how it works but its not a 1:1 head turn, and you can change the sensitivity. I don't really move my head more than 15 degrees or so.

Then I'd suggest buying the F/A-18, its a good mix of difficulty and capability.

After that, I'd go for the bottle neck in your system, but I dunno your specs. I'd suggest a 2070 super if you can afford it, or see if you can pick up some decent components over at /r/hardwareswap

After you've got some hours and feeling like you need more, maybe start saving for a VR headset, I'd suggest the index, but I've heard great things about the rift-s. Odessy + on a budget if need be.

Hey man, great work for a Xbox controller! Next step is a joystick. If you're looking for some cheap ones that'll do everything you need to, the [Logitech Extreme 3D Pro] (https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-963290-0403-Extreme-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497142979&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+extreme+3d+pro) is the place to look, it's around $30 to $40 from most retailers, but the price also equates to lower quality, and not a bad experience but one that could be improved upon significantly. The next step up would be a [VKB Gladiator] (https://www.amazon.com/Gladiator-Joystick-Flight-Simulator-Controller-Stick/dp/B01G6GT49O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497143033&sr=8-1&keywords=VKB%2BGladiator&th=1). A bit of a jump in price (nearly double, can be had for around $100USD +/-$25), but most reviews say it's stellar and a couple people around this subreddit love it. The $200~ price range after that is a bit iffy, as you get sub-par quality most of the time, but the [Thrustmaster T.1600M HOTAS] (https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=pd_cp_63_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01KCHPRXA&pd_rd_r=SX371RPQX69YRDW52JNY&pd_rd_w=8TOqr&pd_rd_wg=NAt9b&psc=1&refRID=SX371RPQX69YRDW52JNY) has kind of alleviated that issue. Most reviews make it out to be excellent for the price. If you've got the change, I think it'd be a great place to start. Other than that there's not much in the $300-$200 price range. In the $500-$400 price range however, there's the one and only [Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00371R8P4/ref=psdc_172487_t5_B01KCHPRXA), which is extremely expensive but modeled after a real A-10C and is of stellar quality. You're going to need rudder pedals if you go that route though, so I'd advise against it as it's got quite a premium to pay.

Glad you're enjoying the hobby, and hopefully you can expand to a stick soon and get even better. No pressure to get one if you're fine with the controller, but it can totally enhance your experience.

u/OwThatHertz · 1 pointr/GearVR

Fair enough. To answer your original question, the S8+ is technically compatible with the 2016 Gear VR but there are some slight fitment issues. The general consensus is that the 1027 2017 version fits and works better, so make sure you can find the model number of the Gear VR and that it matches the 2017 version.

Regarding cellular vs. non-cellular, I use a 2016 version with a carrier-locked Galaxy S7 edge that has the SIM pulled and it only uses WIFI. It works fine. I can't speak to the specific demo model you're talking about as I haven't used it, but it sounds like it should work. If the only difference is that the cellular radio doesn't work, but all other functionality (including Bluetooth and WIFI and the Oculus software) works, you should be fine.

Note that Bluetooth and WIFI being functional will be important. WIFI for downloads and Bluetooth for the remote and for controllers. It's possible that one or both of these will also have been disabled in the demo, so I'd confirm with the seller that both work before proceeding. That said, I've seen store demos that had functional Bluetooth and I'm not sure if it's a separate radio or not. I think it is, because I can put my phone into Airplane mode (disables all radios) and then enable Bluetooth and WIFI while Airplane Mode is still active.
However, given that we're in different markets, I'd still ask the seller first.

For controllers, I recommend the Steelseries Stratus XL or, even better, an Xbox 360 wireless controller. Note that the current version of the Xbox Elite Controller is not bluetooth (uses a dongle) so will not work with Android, so stick with the non-Elite for now. There's supposedly a new version of the Elite controller about to be released that uses Bluetooth instead, but I haven't seen any confirmation on release date as yet.

Good luck!

Edit: typo.

  1. X-Plane.org This is the link to the XP10 section, but nearly all of them should work fine in XP11

  2. Someone else can answer that

  3. The Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS seems to be what everyone is recommending for an entry level HOTAS

  4. For the base game, that's it really. Fly around. Generally people fly between two airports like in real life. Things get more interesting if you add stuff like FSEconomy or multiplayer like VATSIM, IVAO, or PilotEdge

  5. For X-Plane, I would only really buy plane addons. Nearly all the scenery you will ever need is free on places like the x-plane.org fourm. The only other thing I would recommend is looking at one of the weather addons.

  6. There are many, can't name them off the top of my head

  7. MisterX is the end all be all of freeware scenery

The planes I would recommend are the FlightFactor 767, FlightFactor 757, IXEG 737, Rotate MD80, AirfoilLabs 172SP, Any of the Dreamfoil helicopters, and whichever Carenando planes have the Reality Expansion Packs.

Works with PC/PS3/Android/iOS

The nice thing is that it has the XBox’s buttons, so if a game with Xinput tells you “press X” you know to press X on your gamepad, which is useful for fighting games.

Same can’t be said about the PS3/PS4 gamepads which have shape buttons. If a game tells you to press X, you’ll have to press “▣” on your gamepad. That can get annoying.

It’s really good and feels like the PS4 controller (I’ve used a PS4 gamepad a few times).

but If you don’t want to spend 2k you can check out the wireless Redgear one for 1.3k. I haven’t tried this but it has good reviews and is a best seller. The [cheaper] wired model is unavailable.

Sorry if you wanted some super cheap get-the-job-done controllers. I’ve always presumed super cheap ones were a waste of money so I never bothered with them.

The X56 is a bit expensive for what it is, and has dubious quality where you either get a stick that works for five years or that breaks after a few days. Supposedly the quality got better when Saitek got bought out, but I don't know how much I trust that.

On the other hand, the T16000M HOTAS is a well-proven stick and throttle combo. It has the same Hall sensors in the stick that the more expensive Warthog stick uses and has a good amount of buttons and hats that it can be used for a variety of aircraft. It is also a twist stick so you can use it for rudder control, and the throttle has a set of paddles that you can use as axis for things like zoom, brakes, rudder, or whatever else you might need.

TL;DR I'd recommend the T16000M HOTAS. And with the money you're saving from the X56 you could pick up TrackIR 5 if you don't already have it.

There's also this pack that comes with the Thrustmaster rudder pedals which are a good quality, and the pack is still less expensive than the X56 by a decent amount. I've also seen this pack on sale down to 150USD so if you're patient you could save a bit of money on it as well.

I don't know what exactly your budget is but it's also worth noting that the Warthog HOTAS tends to go on sale around the Black Friday to Xmas timeframe and you can often find it for 300USD. It's worth noting with this that the Warthog has no axis able to be used for rudders so you would need to buy rudder pedals from somewhere.

I say my favorite peripheral is one of the most simple. The Thurstmaster Cougar MFD panels. They are NOT actually a display (though some have heavily modded them for simulation games to have an LCD). They do include sturdy clear card sleeves and some blank card stock. There is also a web tool to make your own card stock. I made mine labeled for Star Citizen functions and with a Vanguard in the center.

There are two great features with these. Mostly, they prevent me from having to reach past all my other controls to try and hit Right Alt + M in an emergency. I can map a ton of useful complicated keystrokes or macros and totally forget what Right Alt + M even is! I just look at my MFD and hit the button for Lock Gimbals. Done! Look ahead? I have no idea what that keystroke is either, but I have a clearly labeled button! It's like when we graduated from remembering every phone number to having perpetually updated address books built into all of our phones.

This is the key difference. When you reach up and press the button to toggle Quantum Jump, you look (I imagine) and feel, exactly like Han Solo punching the Millenium Falcon into hyperdrive. If that's not the best thing, I don't know what is. It honestly greatly improves my enjoyment of the game.

The Cougar MFDs come in a pair. I got mine for $65, but they seem to be a bit more expensive now. They are programable with Thrustmaster's Target scripting software. You can use them as simple button presses like I do, or very complicated state switching and scripting macros.

Sorry for the long post, but the original text post I made got deleted by the automoderator and I was told to post this here. I'm looking for a controller for PC gaming. I would prefer for it to have both wired and wireless capabilities (since I sometimes game on a monitor and other times on a big TV, and in the former scenario I'd prefer the minimal input lag of hard wiring, while in the latter case I'd prefer to sit further away and not deal with the hassle of another long wire), but neither of these is a must. Either/or is fine if necessary. Problem is, though, that I'm extremely picky about my controllers. Here's all the shit I want, in descending order of importance:

Here are my recommendations.

---------

VR

Keeping your current computer, Oculus Rift is a good option. Light weight, and fits DCS right.

There are a few upcoming VR headsets, but you may have to upgrade your hardware. You can expect an upgrade in another year or later. So, I recommend living with the Rift for an year or 2.

-----------

HOTAS

Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog is the beast I always recommend. You might need a rudder pedal.

Since you love the су-27, VPC Mongoose T-50 might be your choice. Again, you need a throttle from Warthog and a rudder pedal.

You also have Logitech G X56 and X52 Pro. You don't need a rudder pedal in this case, so you can save a lot. I've personally used them both and moved to the Warthog HOTAS.

Lastly, you have Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS, good reviews, best entry level HOTAS.

Rudders pedals

MFG Crosswind, Slaw Device, Saitek, CH.

> Don't by a plane with complicated systems and tricky/unique flight characteristics if you can't fly an F-15 proficiently. The FC3 planes have simplified systems but most have the same level of flight model. The F-15C and Su-27/33 are 3 of the best air to air planes in the game, so you're not at a disadvantage in that regard, if they were full fidelity they'd probably be even better (more radar modes to work with is one that comes to mind), master these then get the mirage

Thanks I think I'll stick with the FC3 planes mainly the F-15C for now, I heard that Mirage is not ransferable between Steam and Standalone so that might be a problem.

Also Can Steam players play with Standalone players?

> Get a proper hotas before going past the FC3 aircraft

So HOTAS X would be insufficient? I did look at the T16kM do I need the throttle combo? or just the stick? since I see there is what looks like a small throttle slide right there

and what do you think about the VKS Gladiator MkII stick? I've been eyeing it for a while (because I like how it looks, but expensive, I'm probably more likely to get T16K M. )

One last thing, Su-27, the engine won't start, I know the Start up sequence is pretty similar for all FC3 planes, I did the same things I do on the F-15C but the Throttle doesn't respond, there is no engine noise the plane just won' start.

MiG29 did respond to the same start up sequence, (battery>cockpit>engine>Nav lights>flaps)

Edit: I added links to Amazon products that are pretty nice and fit into your budget, if none of these work or you wanted advice on finding similar ones on slightly cheaper budgets just let me know and I'd love to help out!

I realize some people like them, and I mean no disrespect to u/MNLegoBoy but please do not get him a steam controller. I own one and me and everyone I've ever known who used one absolutely hated it.

If he only has one monitor in his setup I would highly suggest getting him a decent second monitor to have discord, youtube, or whatever else he wants up while he plays. It can be really helpful and never hurts to have.

If that doesn't work, you know about his setup...

and he uses a headset with a built-in mic I would suggest getting him this microphone and this interface. Even though they're cheap they're more than good enough and make people feel more legit because they're more like a streamer setup.

and he really likes his headphones/has really nice headphones but doesn't have a headphone stand or mount for him to keep his headphones on and keep his desk organized.

and he's into fighting games or older arcade games you could get him a fighting stick (be careful on this one, if he doesn't have room or likes using his KBM I wouldn't suggest it. It might also help to get one on a higher budget.)

Buy Nice or Buy Twice

BUT if your not sure this is a hobby you'll be into for the next ten years, IDK, I used a hotas x (40 dollars) for a long time with this and DCS and warthunder, I had to use joy2key though for IL2 to create modifier buttons, i did this so I could use my 1 hat for 4 different functions. DCS has this ability in game with their control setup.

Before you get any sticks or whatever, get TrackIR if you don't already have a head tracking setup, VR is also another option, but some people find it lacking currently with the lowered graphically fidelity or you may just get sick from it. Track IR is cheaper then VR by ALOT also.

You can get Natural Points TrackIR (get it with the LED Pro Clip, the hat clip is good but your hat brim will cut off your reflectors alot if you look around too far, with the LED you never loose tracking)

there's also cheaper tracking solutions that use ps3 eye cams and freeware software, checkout Delan Clip or Track Hat

If you know your going to be sticking around, go for the good stuff.

Get the Virpil VPC T-50cm grip and base with the desk mount. Not only will your shoulders thank you in the long run by being in a more natural position, you can use this as a center stick or side stick setup, they have a desktop version (Warbird BRD) coming out next month that is similiar to VKBs gunfighter which is a desktop or you have to mount it yourself

For Pedals, VKB T-Flights are great and accurate but no toe brakes (a real pain in the ass for german ww2 planes, but in IL2 bos you can treat them like russian planes anyway with differential breaking for the most part, i use the brake lever for braking in Il-2)

also can recommend MFG Crosswinds(these are more like real rudder pedals and feature toe brakes)
http://mfg.simundza.com/products

for a throttle, well the only "nice" throttle is the warthogs but thats about 10 years old now, but still pretty good, i hear some of the wiring can got loose and break off though a couple of years after use

Wait for Virpils throttle (comes out next month) which also mount to the desk mounts (the warthog does aswell with a plate adaptor they sell)

PS4 Flight Controls

_____

Keyboard and Mouse support is an issue that’s a lot more nuanced than people may expect. For one thing, you have to point out whether you’re talking about system support or game support. If it’s system support, native console keyboard and mouse support (on the PlayStation side at least) has been around since the PS1, which means that yes, the PS4 does have native keyboard and mouse support. The support issue comes into play with what games support, and really it’s just the fault of developers that most console games don’t have keyboard and mouse support.

A handful of console games have keyboard and mouse support, even some popular ones like Fortnite, Paladins, and Final Fantasy XIV, but most developers just opt not to include it into their console ports. One excuse if seen is that “consoles come with controllers, not keyboards and mice.” The problem with that idea is that it’s not balanced like that when it comes to PC ports, where they’ll have kb+m support and controller support, even though, you know, PCs don’t come with controllers. Another idea is that kb+m support would “give console players an unfair advantage.” However not only does that idea not stem to PC, where you can get an advantage in games by using specialised controllers for racing, flight, and fighting games, but tools like the Xim Apex and Hori Tactical Assault allow people to use keyboard and mouse on consoles, which means that only people who can afford them have that advantage. In that way, allowing universal kb+m support on consoles would actually balance things out by allowing all players to share that advantage, not just the ones who can afford $100+ conversion tools.

Developers tend to show extra love to PC players, and tend to under-support console players. It’s another part of the issue that people seem to view one option as the “better option,” which makes them underestimate or even look down on the “other option.” That’s not the fault of consoles, it’s the fault of people not wanting to treat them like a real gaming platform.

Yes, the game supports wing play, with the maximum wing housing 4 commanders. This is best used while partaking in combat, however wing missions allow you to trade as well. Exploration isn't the best wing activity, however you could journey alongside one another in the same instance.

Controllers are great, however I fully recommend a HOTAS after you've learned the game. The only thing better for E:D than a HOTAS is VR, once you have both the game becomes a truly remarkable experience. I recommend this guy here: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA

Depends on your definition of "Break the bank". At the entry level, you're looking at spending about $50 USD.

  • The Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS X - This is entry level HOTAS that goes for $40-50 USD. 12 buttons, an 8-way hat, twist stick, and rudder rocker. This tends to have the "a little short of controls" problem, as Elite has lots of stuff to bind, so you'll likely want to either use the keyboard for more buttons or set up a series of modifiers like this to fit everything on it. The HOTAS One and HOTAS 4 (for the Xbox and PS4, respectively, though both are also PC compatible) are slightly upgraded versions of this stick, with the same exterior, but improved internals tightening the deadzone and making them a bit more precise. They're usually more expensive than the X, but you might catch them on sale for cheaper occasionally. Note that this unit only uses 1 USB port, as the throttle and stick are connected to each other via a cable (about 20" long). This is something to keep in mind if you plan on mounting them to chair arms or something. I personally used this unit previously. It's a perfectly good setup, though I personally found the lack of buttons to be annoying after awhile. Note that the throttle has a detent at 50%, making it nicely suited to full range operation, with the detent separating forward and reverse.
  • The Thrustmaster Stick X. This unit is basically the above, but without the throttle and the buttons transferred to the stick base along with a throttle slider. Rings in at a little cheaper at about $30 USD.
  • The Thrustmaster T16000M. This is a refreshed version of the classic T16000M, with minor exterior changes (reshaped hat, reshaped trigger, reshaped throttle, and tactile indicators on the base buttons). It's notable for being one of the rare ambidextrous sticks (you just swap out a couple parts to switch it) Unlike the X (which uses potentiometers), this unit uses contactless hall effect sensors, giving it very smooth motion with excellent precision. 16 buttons (12 of which are on the base), an 8-way hat, twist stick and throttle slider. More buttons available than the X. The stick by itself rings in at about the same price as the HOTAS X at $50 USD.

Moving up, there's the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS HOTAS. This is the above T16000M stick along with Thrustmaster's new TWCS throttle and rings in at $130 USD. Totaling them up, you get 19 buttons, two 8-way hats, two 4-way hats, a two-way switch (very handy for supercruise/hyperjump), an analog stick, throttle slider, rudder rocker, and an analog dial, which is plenty of room for all the stuff you need (note that the throttle has no detent, so you'll probably want to run it forward only with a button assigned to reverse. Though if you're handy, people have come up with modifications to add a detent). This is what I personally use and I quite like it. Note that all the components of this set are available separately and can function independently (each needs its own USB port, so you might want to buy a hub with these). So you could buy the stick today and the throttle next month. Or buy the throttle and some other stick or buy two sticks, or whatever mix and match scheme you like. There's also a matching set of pedals (the TFRP rudder) available if that's your jam.
u/SillyArkun · 2 pointsr/EmulationOnAndroid

I can't speak for the Beboncool, but the MOGA Hero Power is a bit meh with the twin sticks and the triggers (you get what you pay for). MOGAs are great though in that they're generally compatible with everything.

Additional side commentary fluff:
Something to consider - you can get a nicer controller if you take out a few options - if you don't need a clip, you're not going to be on the move and you have a phone stand, you could just get a normal bluetooth controller.
This controller I found was pretty good (although a bit annoying since my phone thought it was a keyboard):
https://www.amazon.com/Matricom-Wireless-Rechargeable-Bluetooth-Compatible/dp/B015YF3YZ8
If you do decide on that though, keep in mind the thumbsticks are a lot better than the options you listed, but the dpad is garbage.

I would also say look into an OTG controller, but I researched your phone and it doesn't support it. Right now I use a wired iBuffalo USB controller and I love it.

Lol, that’s the million dollar question. I’m not sure what your budget is but I seem to think I’ve heard good things about the Thrustmaster T1600 stick and throttle T1600 Amazon. I hope that link works but it looks like the stick and throttle are $129 for the pair and that seems like a good deal to me but I got my setup a few years ago so not sure about the pricing and deals that they have now. My setup is also a Thrustmaster but it’s the Warthog Hotas which is a bit higher on the price scale but I’ve been happy with the brand. I hope this helps a bit.

The TM 16000 HOTAS - I use this for ED - Super awesome for the price. Most HOTAS are overpriced. This one is fantastic for the cost. TONS of buttons and neat features on the throttle you won't see anywhere else! I love the little throttle finger joystick, it makes for perfect lateral and vertical movements to mix with the joystick movements. The X52 will match the in-game model better, but honestly while in VR and doing stuff you're not going to be starring at your joystick and throttle in-game model...like at all. Best budget HOTAS imo.

HOTAS is great and fairly easy to learn, though I heard double joystick is better for control.

I use the Thrustmaster T-16000M HOTAS which I know is pretty popular.

I'm hoping SC will have a preset for this set up at some point, because it becomes way easier to tweak it from a default setup than start completely over (for me).

For reference I've only been using HOTAS for about a month and I'm already 10x better at flying than I was. Also my landing looks way better ;)

u/iiwong · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

Flying with dual joysticks (and pedals) feels awesome! I got a T16000m FCS plus a T16000m FCS Flight Pack and only use the sticks and the pedal right now

I am gonna configure my setup in a way that I can switch from hosas to hotas when I am not in combat to be able to fly around more relaxed. It should be pretty easy to set up if I play around with the Target software some more.

The first time setting up dual joysticks was pretty tedious. I used TheNOOBIFIER1337's Playlist and the several reddit posts as an inspiration and finally decided to set them up more or less like in this video
To keep my desk uncluttered and my KB/M close I made a setup like this one!. Here are some more Images.

u/Rucati · 1 pointr/StreetFighter

Let me preface this with saying I think you should just get a PS4 controller because it's best at that price range. That being said, I can kind of see why maybe you'd want to get a cheap stick. Maybe you aren't sure you really wanna use one, so don't want to commit $200 and you'd like to try it first, which seems relatively reasonable.

You won't find one for less than $50 though, but for $55 there's https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-F300-Arcade-Joystick-Switch/dp/B019MFPLC0?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1 which at least exists. It isn't going to be great, but it's at least an arcade stick and even though it isn't high quality or anything it's going to feel like any other stick from the standpoint of the layout. So if you've never used a stick and just want to try one to see if you like it I think that's probably the best you can do.

Again though, I think just use a pad, there's nothing wrong with it, they work for other games as well, and it's cheaper and wireless.

I can give a little bit of input here since last November i built a new rig for DCS.

My specs:

9900k OC to 5.1ghz on all cores

32gig ram

2080ti FTW3

HTC Vive

Thrustmaster warthog stick and throttle

Pedals - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015PII6YI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Simrig - https://www.volairsim.com/

\^ That simrig was probably the biggest improvement to my experience aside from going to VR. If money is truly no object for you then including that in your plans is a huge bonus.

In VR i get about 90 80fps with settings turned way up but keep in mind that they are planning a VR overhaul of DCS World soon that should greatly improve performance.

Hope all that helps! Let me know if you have any questions about my stuff and i would be happy to try to help.

The Mayflash F300 is super cheap and really durable and comes with great parts- nothing beats this within that price range and many people start off w/ the F300 due to these reasons; it's an overall great stick and has an amazing price.

The F300 has a newer version though which is the F500 it's about $30 more expensive, but the case itself is a bit bigger so it sits on the lap easier(also better for people with bigger hands) and has some metal plates on the top and bottom which means more durability and just feels more premium. It also includes more features than the F300 such as: a headphone jack(apple?) and a much easier artwork change option. Hopefully this helps, but you should also watch some YouTube vids about budget fightsticks as theres tons of content about those :)

I recently picked up the Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS to replace my Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X. I would recommend the T.16000M setup over the T-Flight mostly because the throttle and stick are completely separate, which is easy to appreciate when you've fumbled around with the T-Flight's awkward design when it's separated. The T.16000M also feels a bit more robust and having more buttons/options on the throttle (especially in VR) is a huge plus. All that being said, I spent a lot of hours in Elite with the T-Flight and you can't really go wrong with it. I fondly recall the shit eating grin I had on my face the first time I throttled up and instantly felt more 'connected' with my ship. Cheers.

Heroes Evolved has partial controller support. It works best with a telescopic controller like the Fyldigi Wee so you can still reach the screen with your thumbs when needed. Also the Wee comes with access to a touch mapping app developed by the manufacturer that has preset mappings for games like Arena of Valor. Ymmv, I don't really play AoV on mobile but I do have hundreds of games of Heroes Evolved using a controller (some champions work better than others).

There aren't a lot of cheap HOTAS options. Some things to consider:

  • T-Flight HOTAS X is relatively cheap at $50, but has relatively few buttons to work with and mediocre sensors that can make fine aiming difficult. A lot of people use it and are very happy with it though.
  • T.16000M FCS is the next step up, and although it's fairly new it seems to be getting a pretty good reception. It's over your budget at $129 though.
  • Dual joysticks is another totally viable and fun way to play, although it may take a bit more work to find a way to control all thrusters that feels natural (some people use twist for forward/reverse, some add rudder pedals, etc). There are obviously lots of possible combinations, one that works for your budget is a T-16000m combined with a Logitech Extreme 3d pro, for $95 combined.

u/mourning_lemon · 2 pointsr/oculus

The best entry level HOTAS for Elite is (in my opinion) the T16000m setup. I've had that one, an X56, a T.Flight and a logitech flight stick and the 16000m is definitely my favorite. Plenty of buttons, pretty good ergonomics, affordable, and expandable (you can add a second stick and reverse the grips for your other hand as well as rudder peddles, though i don't actually like the ones that match the 16000m). It also has the same HALL sensors as the pro level Warthog flight stick. Elite in VR is awesome by the way

EDIT: you dont actually need a HOTAS for Elite though it is recommended by most people. I played like 300+ hours of Elite on an Xbox one pad. It isn't perfect but it works pretty well considering Elite has console support already so they have put thought into the pad controls. Also you can add a chatpad for extra binds. o7

1. I use the built in touchpad for everything except games that require a bluetooth controller. The touch pad is very responsive and functions perfectly. I bought this and it works well with games that require it.

2. My favorite games are Smash Hit, Gunjack, Anshar Wars 2, Esper 2, Oculus Arcade (Sonic the Hedgehog), and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. All these games have exceptionally high replay value. I have been playing Smash Hit everyday before work. The game is free and it helps wake me up.

The only game I didn't like was Mortal Blitz VR. I wish I hadn't bought it.

3. I use the Oculus video app for the "Void Theater" setting so that I can watch content I put on my phone while laying down. I use Samsungs MilkVR for the 360 3D porn I put on my phone. I also use the Vrideo app for random awesome 360 3d videos. I like this app because I can download the videos.

Oh hey, I own that joystick! It's old and has huge problems with y-axis, but it was a trusty joystick.

Anyway, depending on how well you can touch type, you could even use KB/M.

I run dual stick - the attack 3 in left hand for thrusters, and in my right a t16000m, works great. (though my t16000m is green/grey, older version, the new one looks like it would be easier to use in VR, and is ED colored). You could also try buying the throttle and using your old joystick

Its this one.

GameSir G3s - an fyi this is a Canadian link - this is Green but I have the black one which looks sold out and being resold for much higher than retail. The App I use supports other gamepads too.

I dug up the link for the US one for those not in the Kingdom of Canada.

It does ship with a phone holder to mount it ontop so just make sure yours fits before you consider buying.

The App is Matsu player and it does N64,PS1, All gameboy models, Snes, Nes and I think a few others. Ive tried them all and they run pretty good.

Free one has ads but after I used it for a bit of time and saw how good it ran I sprang for the full version. To each their own but I knew I'd get enough time out of it to warrant the upgrade and go ad-less.

I was about to write a lengthy text, until I realized that all i was saying has already been discussed :-)

I would love to recommend you the Thrustmaster VG T300 Ferrari Alcantara Edition , but the Logitech's QC has been really bad, and I don't know if they have improved in the last two years or not, so I can't really recommend them with a straight face...

The G29 is basically a slightly updated G27 minus the H-shifter (which you can buy separately if needs be). Some people are angry because of the omitment of the shifter, therefore the mixed reviews, otherwise it's a great set.

If you get more serious about sim-racing, and want to get better lap-times you can mod the G27 brake pedal with a loadcell...either totally diy (around 100 dollar) or with a kit (130 dollar).

It all depends on your budget obviously, but the G29 is definitively a very good set with the ability to mod the hell out of the brake pedal (if you ever feel the need to do so).

If you have more questions I am sure the guys and gals at /r/simracing are glad to help you (especially as the majority of them has more experience than I have...I'm still only entry-level enthusiast hehe).

Ultimately, it's going to be a matter of taste. What sounds like the most fun to you? That's the question I asked myself a few years ago when the original Arena Commander module released. I decided the answer to that was dual stick, so I got myself a cheap left handed joystick and tried it. Turns out I love it! If immersion is what you're looking for, joysticks certainly deliver, at least in my experience. But I've been playing with joysticks for two decades now so I'm familiar with adjusting to odd control schemes. You may not want to invest that time, effort, and money.

If you do decide to try it out, however, there are a lot of cheap options that will give you a taste of what you're looking for without breaking the bank. I used the Extreme 3D pro joystick before upgrading recently, and it was a good option for only $30. Link HERE. There's also the T16000M which is fully ambidextrous for $60. I used it to test dual stick flight. Link HERE. And you may find them cheaper used. You can always upgrade later if it turns out you really like the setup, which is what I did.

If all you want to do is run cargo and explore, though, any options will be fine. If you think you'll be happy with mouse and keyboard, don't sweat it! I like decoupled flight and combat so having that additional control over my thrusters is nice and immersive, but that's my situation, not yours.

Again, ask yourself honestly what sounds like fun and go from there. If mouse and keyboard seems sufficient to you, there's no point in spending money. No amount of advice from other people can top that.

Saitek and CH Products make decent products. It comes done to knowing what you want to fly and reading reviews to know what to get. A lot of Saitek items have been discontinued and have higher prices now, but I think some of their com units are just awesome.

If you have the budget to get that build you initially shared and plus all the extras checkout these guys - LINK

Depends, Some cards can run 3 monitors and some only 2. You don't necessarily need them to share the same resolution but it helps. If you want to forego extra monitors this product is great for FSX.

u/zzevannn · 2 pointsr/PS4

$100 is only going to get you something used (like a t150 or g29) or something like the T80 that does not have force feedback, and force feedback is probably the biggest reason to use a wheel, so I personally would not recommend going that route.

The T300RS GT is on sale for $200 today for prime day, which is a really good deal for that level of kit. Cheaper than the T150 is usually, and it is a much higher quality wheel (I've had both.) If you've got the scratch right now, that is likely your best bet. Outside of prime day, the non-GT version, which only has two pedals, is typically around 230-250.

Also, browse a bit on /r/simracing, there are a lot of advice questions like this, as well as a very good buying guide that will help you get a good grasp on the options.

As a personal aside, spend a little more up front if you have any inkling this will be a hobby of yours. The t300 made a world of difference once I upgraded after hundreds of hours on the T150, and if you'll be spending a lot of time with it might as well get treat yourself up front.

I never played on the PC, but I have it on the XBOX. honestly, I don't think you'll be missing much. The controls are super solid, and if it doesn't quite fit what you need, you can always tweak it. I've personally never had any issues with it, in fact, I'm still using the default controls.

Also, on PS4, if you REALLY want a HOTAS, you can definitely order some for cheap. I'm debating it myself.

But all in all, the controls are super solid! I wouldn't be very worried.

Also, check out /r/ElitePS for the PS4 player of Elite!

Some "higher end" links for you:

  • Ch Throttle -- IMO still the best throttle until VKB/Virpil
  • MFG Crosswind
  • VKB
  • Virpil - great dual stick options here. I liked VKB just a tad more, like the additional button more on VKB. But Virpil has other things going for it too. Like better service!
  • X56 Lotitech - make sure its the latest version, not saitek crap ... even re-branded saitek to logitech. Logitech recently released an update. QA is a huge issue with X56 range.

Don't use this for E:D Warthog that is my 2c worth. Its maybe looks all metal but has some plastic internals and really is not for space flight sims. Allot of people bitch about the nipple on the throttle. So just my opinion that you should not look at it.

    On the lower end:

  • Thrustmaster T 16000 etc. I have no experience with it. But people like it.
  • X360 controllers etc. some people love it.
  • Mouse and Keybaord -- PvP players swear by it!

Happy stick hunting, fly safe CMDR o7!

I have a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS setup, it's pretty decent and fits into the budget without losing out on too many features.

The throttle and stick are separated so you have the flexibility to position things where you want them. The cheaper HOTAS setups are usually throttle and stick combined with less buttons, if that doesn't bother you then you can save a bit more money.

T.16000M FCS HOTAS on Amazon

You also have the ability to add rudder pedals if you choose to do so but they are a separate purchase.

Good luck and hopefully you find something soon as it's pretty life changing for Elite and many other flight sims.

u/mechanicalgod · 2 pointsr/simracing

I assume instead of GTE you mean the T300 RS GT Edition.

This is the T300 RS GTE, and $400 is not a good price for it.

The difference is the GT Edition has better pedals than the GTE.

re: The T150. There is the Pro version that has the 3 pedal set, but it's currently unavailable on Amazon.

You can also get a separate 3 pedal set like the T3PA, or some refurbished G27 Pedals and the Leo Bodnar Adapter.

For a budget first-time wheel, maybe look second-hand? The G29 is mechanically exactly the same as the G27, and the G27 can normally be picked up for c. $200 or less second-hand.

Also bear in mind, the G29 does not come with a shifter, but the G27 does. If you want a shifter for the G29 you'll need to spend probably a minimum of c. $60 for the Logitech Shifter. However, the Logitech Shifter is pretty shit, so you might be better off getting at least the TH8A.

What's he difference between the G29, T150 and T300?

If you're comparing all the 3 pedal set versions, then the pedals are all virtually equal.

The difference is mainly FFB.

The G29 FFB is fine, but has a noticable deadzone at the top and can sometime feel a little bit notchy.

The T300 FFB is smoother, faster, stronger and quieter than the G29 and has virtually no deadzone. It's significantly better, but maybe not $150 better (depends on what it's worth to you).

I've been told the T150 FFB is somewhat between the G29 and T300, but I've not tried it myself.

u/JasperSlade · 2 pointsr/RetroPie

I picked up 2 of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EO5QPN2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I was looking exclusively for bluetooth controllers because I didn't want to mess with cables at all. These were on sale for $9.99 when I purchased them, but they're obviously worth more. They feel sturdy & well built. Their battery life is pretty good too.
These controllers have different "modes", depending on whether you're connecting it to an Apple or Android device. Holding the "B" button while powering on will allow the Pi to see it.

I'm duplicating my setup for my younger brothers and a few friends, I'll be purchasing 2 of these controllers for each of those builds for sure.

just you wait. you may be interested in getting a /r/hotas setup to play warthunder (Free+paid DLC), DCS (also Free+paid DLC), elite: dangerous($30), star citizen ($45), mechwarrior 4 (free), star fighter arduxim ($5), or vector 36 ($25). all great games to play with a set up. You can get an entry level one for $60 (Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 is your best bang/buck/skill) The feeling of using a physical throttle and joystick to fly and turn make my greatest experiences in VR.

u/Yarik85 · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

A copy of what i sent to one user, but my recommendation still stands:

If you end up buying a joystick one day, I strongly urge you to look for Thrustmaster 16000, or for something with the equivalent of Thrustmaster's HALL effect. It really IS really-really nice. Because with whatever game you end up playing, you may end up using only a few buttons, but the joystick part of it will always be there, so THAT'S what you want to be top notch.

And I may be repeating myself, but that HALL effect is what they use in the pretty much highest end Warthog Joysticks and HOTAS, ones that go for $300+, so even though the buttons and the build itself of the 16000 is the same as of the other joysticks in the 30-50$, the action part of its is way above it's level.

Here's an Amazon link to the pre-order of the new version of the joystick by itself:

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-VG-T16000M-FCS-Joystick-Black/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=sr_1_10?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1479623136&sr=1-10&keywords=thrustmaster+joystick

/u/caulfieldrunner Save up for this. If you can't afford this, just buy one T16000m joystick (got mine for like $35 I think) and use the keyboard for throttle etc. The t16000m is easily the best joystick for the price. A lot of people actually just buy two of the joysticks and play like that. I wanted to have a throttle in case I ever get into a proper flight sim game though. For space games, two joysticks is perfect.

I never liked the stiff feel of the x1 dpad, and the 360 controller dpad really sucks. I also tried the logitech controller and didn't like their triggers. I also did not like the fact that the F710 dropped its signal all the damn time. The steam controller looks interesting, but I didn't feel like messing around with that.

http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Wireless-Controller-Smartphone-Playstation-3/dp/B019H5II8Y

This is the one I came across. Despite being from one of those chinese knockoff companies the controller itself is built quite well. It has a nice dpad, and the buttons and triggers all feel good. I also like the feel of the PS4 controller. The battery life on it is also pretty damn good and I can recharge it with a usb cable.

I may try the steam controller at some point, but I got two of these right now, and im very happy with them.

u/maxdps_ · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

If you want to buy once and never again, Fanatec is probably your best bet but it comes at a price.

ClubSport V2.5 Wheel Base is my recommendation for wheel base, check out the steering wheels you like and pick one, this is more preference. This base should basically last you forever, DD wheelbases are highly over-rated in my book.

ClubSport Pedale V3 because they come with the load-cell upgrade already and this is probably the most important upgrade if you take sim racing seriously, it greatly helps with your braking being more consistent.

If else, check out the setup I use. I honestly love it and I don't really see myself upgrading anytime soon. I plan on getting a new setup maybe next year and I'll most likely buy what I posted above if they are still available at the time.

HOTAS... games like Elite and flight sims take on a whole new dimension. Thrustmaster T16000m/TCS is a good entry level bit of kit for $100. Lots recommend T-Flight HOTAS but I don't, it's $50 of squeaky disappointment with very low resale value.

Wheel/pedals/shifter... simracing (truck driving, etc) in VR is fucking awesome, but only with a reasonable driving setup. A used Logitech G27 can be found for $150-$200 and is your best bang/buck ratio maybe used G29/shifter.

Both of these peripherals allow full body transfer once set up and used in games that make proper use of them, and those are experiences with near infinite replay-ability that make some of the best use of VR.

u/AaronToro · 1 pointr/formula1

Totally agreed. He's not my favorite either so I know what you mean. Hopefully 2021 shakes things up

For simracing I'd say the cost of entry for a setup you're going to enjoy would be something like a Logitech G29 or a thrustmaster tmx. I entered with a TMX and still use it, though I've upgraded the pedals since then and added an H pattern shifter. A G29 can be had on Amazon for $200 and will give you everything you absolutely need, and you can just clamp it to your desk.

I just checked on Amazon and [this TMX ](http://www.Thrustmaster.com/ TMX Force Feedback racing wheel for Xbox One and WINDOWS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CI97DNM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_m38kDbWMZVMMC) is $126 with free shipping. That's an insane deal. The pedals it'll come with are...not the best, but those can be easily and affordably upgraded. I've been using the TMX wheel for a couple years and it's held up remarkably well. The only downside is that you're not gonna have a clutch pedal. I'm assuming you're going to be more interested in formula style cars where it's less of an issue, but it's something to consider

There are a bunch of wheels and sets for about every price point above that but I'd personally suggest starting with one of those and then just having fun until you decide you wanna upgrade to a buy it once type of device. That's what I'm working on right now. Just don't get intimidated by some of the gear you see on the simracing subreddit or forums. You can spend as much as you want, but mostly you just pay for immersion. Just because someone has a $1,200 sequential shifter doesn't mean they're any faster

u/amart591 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I knew nothing about them and didn't want to get a super expensive one without ever having used one or played Elite at the time. This is the HOTAS4 from thrustmaster. You can pick up a HOTAS X from them for $10 cheaper but this one works with the PS4 too (not that many games support it but with VR on the way, better safe than sorry). Love it so far, can't really give it any negatives other than that the cable between the two pieces being a bit short but that's where the hobby part kicks in.

u/alohroh · 3 pointsr/simracing

I mentioned this already in another post, but the Thrustmaster T300 Alcantara Edition package is a very solid choice. Normally, the price is $469 on Amazon, but I saw it go for $299 during Black Friday and during the Christmas/holiday season. I picked it up when it was on sale, and for that price, its extremely well worth it. This setup is far superior to any of the Logitech wheels/pedals. My roommate has a Logitech G29, and that thing feels like a toy in every way compared to the T300. The T300 is much quiter, smoother feeling, and the pedals feel much more realistic (for this price range). Also just the diameter of the wheel alone makes a huge difference in the feel. It does not come with a separate shifter, but you can always add that in the future.

I have tried the G29 and the T300 side by side, and I can answer any questions you might have about them. Currently I'm using the T300 Alcantara package with a Fanatec 1.5 SQ shifter. The shifter adds ALOT to the experience, and it was totally worth the money IMO.

u/Th3bigM00se · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I for one don't use the mouse to control my ship. If you have one, use an xbox one controller. But I prefer to use a joystick and throttle. I find that using a joystick makes the game much better. If you are on a budget I found that this works great. If you have the money to spare then this is an amazing HOTAS. Now you can also buy the stick and throttle separately on that second one if you would like. Just some options for you. Good luck.

u/Dimingo · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

I can't speak highly enough about the [Thrustmaster FCS] (https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA)... Amazon looks to be out of them actually...

The T16000M joystick is one of the best ones out there (and can't be beat at its price point), and it's ambidextrous, so if you want to try dual stick, your already halfway there.

The throttle feels rather nice, and you have easy access to more buttons than you'll know what to do with. There's a good rudder for horizontal strafing, and a little joystick on it that I use fit vertical strafing.

One advantage that I get from a HOTAS vs HOSAS is that it translates well to atmospheric flight games (play some of them as well), so no need for extra peripherals.

u/baicai18 · 1 pointr/oculus

I was just reading another thread and decided to buy this just today. I had been looking at the x52 for a while, but it's like double the price of this, and have been hearing bad things about them after being bought out by madcatz.

This Thrustmaster was also designed together with frontier, so I'm guessing it should work pretty well? (will find out Friday) I hear the buttons don't feel as nice, as they're not mechanical except for the trigger, but apparently the sensor accuracy is better. Not really sure which is better better, but just giving you another option.

I'm coming from a T.Flight Hotas X and voice attack, and that's already working great, but I can't find a good way to mount the T.Flight, so looking for an upgrade.

Voice attack is amazing, and I honestly don't think I can go back to not using it. Like someone else said, anything not combat related I don't need buttons anymore, which was a big problem with my T.Flight

Enjoy! Now mod it to make it better!

Replacement detent - highly recommended

Replacement slew stick

Table mounts

There are different options for these, but this is what I have. I also got a 10cm stick extension when I bought my MFG Crosswind. Also check out the Thrustmaster MFDs. If you get the MFDs I highly recommend CTS for DCS. There's a bit of a learning curve to get it set up, but once you understand it and are used to it it's wonderful to have intricate profiles for each aircraft without having to develop it yourself. And of course with the MFDs you then have to get a second screen (or screens) to mount them to so you can export the MFDs to them.

Yeah this is never ending. Welcome to the money pit. :)

Firstly, thank you so much for the detailed response. I knew nothing about this stuff so this is insanely helpful! I just have two questions if that's okay:

You mentioned that the controllers will work with emulators on Android no problem which is good to hear since that's what I'm getting it for, but I'm wondering how exactly they work. The emulator programs I've used don't seem very advanced and they don't have a lot of options. Maybe if you can just tell me what you had to do to get your own controllers working that'd be great

Also this one that you showed me: https://www.amazon.com/Bounabay-Wireless-Telescopic-Bluetooth-Controller/dp/B06XKSNCTM/ looks nice and portable and exactly what I'm looking for, but what exactly is the USB stick in the picture for?

Thanks again for all the help!

u/Antaniserse · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

As already suggested, that stick is perfect with all the classics arcade space sims: all the title from the X-Wing series, Freespace series, Wing Commander series and also more recent games even if, with the more complex ones, you'll need to be a little more creative with the mapping software/extra input peripherals, since that stick is a bit light on available buttons

If you can expand the budget a bit, this model is more recent, has better sensors and way more control options... better choice IMO, especially since you are considering ED

Absolute must play for me are TIE Fighter (but i've always had a sweet spot for the first X-Wing) and Freespace 1+2 with the FreespaceOpen engine port

u/davidsredditaccount · 2 pointsr/Games

~$100 for a hotas, ~$150 for dual sticks. That's entry level with the Thrustmaster T.16000M, it's a good stick that is the best option for a left hand stick and runs ~$75 if you can get it when it's in stock, the stick/throttle combo is ~100.

If you are unsure what you want I'd start with the Hotas and if you decide you want a second stick later on you can either get another T.16000M or buy a better right hand stick and swap the grip for left hand use. Plus that gives you a throttle to use for other games that either don't support or just don't play well with dual sticks.

There is also the potential to use a stick/mouse combo, left hand stick for movement, with a mouse to control aim.

u/-dPhidt · 1 pointr/StreetFighter

I'm looking for a stick to play UMvC3 and SFV on PC. This mayflash stick is pretty cheap and is the amazon recommended one, but my buddies who play the games recommend this hori one. I've used the xbox/pc version of the stick that my buds recommend and I really like it, but I want to know if it's worth it. Any suggestions?

u/wrath_of_grunge · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

it kind of depends on a few factors.

  • How much you want to spend.

  • How much use you get out of it. This is tied to how much value you'll get out of your purchase.

  • How high quality of a stick do you want.

there's a number of different setups out there for different price ranges. the Thrustmaster setups seem to be of a higher quality than the Saitek/Logitech setups.

personally i won't pay more than $100 for a stick that doesn't feature Force Feedback. this can be a little difficult when you want a new stick. i've been using a MS SideWinder Force Feedback 2 stick. it's old, but they're very good. they work well with pretty much everything, and in some games the Force Feedback is active.

in games like Elite, it doesn't really use the FF feature, so it just puts a set amount of tension on the stick. i like this better than spring based sticks, and after nearly 20 years of use, my stick is still pinpoint precise, with no real deadzone. i actually have to set a small deadzone because the stick is a bit too sensitive.

this doesn't solve the throttle problem, but i intend to fix that by adding a Thrustmaster Throttle.
u/KarmaRepellant · 1 pointr/starcitizen

Nice. One of the good things with the T16000M is that it's reversible- so if you want the option of dual sticks you can get a matching one and use it with your left hand instead of the throttle.

This offer is probably the best value hotas you can buy at the moment. The quality is excellent if you don't mind a plastic stick.

u/kinggimped · 8 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Unless you're rich and just happy to splurge on whatever's the top of the line, just get a cheap one to start with. Most people start with the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X, which is cheap and plasticky but it has all the buttons you need and works absolutely fine. I have 1000+ hours in E:D and have never felt the need to upgrade from this HOTAS, though I'll probably get something better when it eventually breaks.

If you find you really like the HOTAS experience and feel like you want to dump some money into it, then you can get something like the Thrustmaster T 1600M or the Logitech X52.

And if you really like it and want to go higher end, there are a few options for that. Just be warned that they start to get real expensive.

u/pandawombat · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Congrats! Elite in VR is amazing, I could never play it on a flat screen again.

As for tips to improve quality, there are in-game supersampling options. I can't give you too much information on that, as I don't have a good enough system to utilize it, but it's there.

I'd also suggest looking into getting yourself a HOTAS if you really want to enhance the piloting-a-spaceship feel. I bought the Thrustmaster T16000m + throttle and using it with a VR headset is just amazing. Elite even has an in-game controls template specifically for that setup - you can configure it if you want, but I found the defaults to be just fine. I mounted the joystick and throttle to my chair, and combined with VR it really feels like I'm sitting in the cockpit of a spaceship. Can't imagine playing the game without it!

u/Flight714 · 2 pointsr/PSVR

> ... having a structure in my living room that looks like half a go kart is contrary to the freedom that VR offers

That's not the purpose of VR though: The purpose of VR is to simulate an experience as accurately as possible. So, for example:

  • If you were playing a VR game that simulated being in an empty room, then playing it in a real-life empty room would be ideal.
  • If you were playing a VR game that simulated being in a car, then playing it in a cockpit would be idea.

So the "ideal" room for VR depends entirely on the type of game you're playing it. Heck, if you were playing a VR game that simulated swimming, then a room with a swimming pool would be ideal.

Anyway, the cheapest possible PS4 wheel you can get that is worth owning is the Thrustmaster T150:

Apologies if questions about gear/peripherals aren't allowed.

I'm loving this game but the KBM controllers are starting to get annoying now that I'm playing more frequently again. I'm looking at HOTAS but I'm just not sure what I should be looking for in this kind of controller.

Right now I'm leaning towards the T-1600M throttle/joystick as it fits my budget the best.

I've found multiple sources that say the X52 Pro is one of the best sticks for Elite, although I'm skeptical of the $70 price hike being worth it.

Will the T-1600M work well for playing Elite, or should I save for a little while longer and jump for the X52 Pro?

In case it's relevant, right now I'm predominantly exploring in the game, though I'm hoping to get more into the combat side of things.

u/handsomeassWIhipster · 1 pointr/xboxone

Unfortunately, the Ferrari Thrustmaster wheel is going to be the best you can do unless you're willing to hit $200 for something that will last more than a year, in which case this will be worth the $50 additional spent AND work on PC: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Force-Feedback-racing-wheel-WINDOWS/dp/B01CI97DNM/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1478810850&sr=1-2&keywords=xbox+one+racing+wheel

As it stands, I had the Spyder wheel for about a year before upgrading. It did not decide to play nice with my Windows 10 PC despite trying to run third party programs to recognize it, but for Xbox One it was more than serviceable. My biggest issues were the bungee cord system within the wheel, which will misalign the wheel over time as the cords wear out (its like having a real life misalignment!), and that the pads on the pedals to keep it from skidding were absolutely piss poor. Carpeting, laminated wood, plastic, you name it - you will want to invest a few bucks in rubber feet adhesive or otherwise to get it still. The shifter buttons as well are immensely clicky, and keeping the base stable with the screw system for desks and mounts is inconsistent and unstable without really pressing it against the desk. With this all said, when you get it all working, it is definitely worth the money, and I've been able to put down some top times on the DiRT Rally boards, alongside enjoying Project Cars and Assetto Corsa. The wheel has plenty of grip for your hands, the pedals have plenty of travel with bearable deadzone, and while it lacks feedback, it does follow 1:1 motion fairly well with minimal input lag.

Simply put, if your son plays racing games more than anything else and quite often during a week, I'd invest the extra money. If not, this will get the job done with a little tweaking and something along the lines of a dedicated desk/table to mount it own. Hope this helps.

I have a Steam Controller and an Xbox 360 controller. My girlfriend and I played though Lego Marvel Superheroes, the Lego Harry Potters and some of Jurassic World with two different controllers. So if you want to mix and match, you're totally able to.

If you have any controllers laying around, see if you can find an adapter for them.

u/Super206 · 4 pointsr/hoggit

It's a cheap(er) HOTAS, it's biggest upside is a lot of inputs, if you're looking for something that will guarantee to last a long time I wouldn't look at a recent Saitek/Madcatz as a first choice. IMO the throttle is a much nicer unit than the stick and worth hanging on to. The stick layout is okay, my only gripe is the shape of the hats, and unless you have large hands it's a stretch from the base resting position to the top switches, if that base was a half-inch or so higher it would be a lot better.

I have one, and I really like it, I've had it for since mid 2014 and I haven't experienced any failures. I guess I'm lucky, but you get what you pay for for things like this. In fairness, Hotasessesse's across the board have much higher failure rates than any other peripheral input device such as mice and simple sticks like a Logitech Attack-3/5. CH and TM products aren't flawless, but they are better built and more consistent, worth spending the money on if you have it.

However, with the changeover in the parent company (MC -> Logitech) I would keep an eye on them. If you need something right-the-f***-now without spending much, a Thrustmaster T1600M FCS kit just came out as TM's answer to a proper budget hotas, and the reviews are good so far. Just keep in mind that it's built to fit a low cost so don't expect a lot of metal.

I just got into this game recently, and have been really enjoying it. I've been looking into getting a HOTAS, and I think I've narrowed it down to two models, but I have concerns about both of them.

The X52 Pro seems quite nice, but I'm a bit concerned about the QA, I've heard a lot of them fail (especially recently with logitech), is there any truth to that?

The other one I've been looking at is the Thrustmaster T.16000M which seems to have really good build quality and an excellent throttle, but I'm a bit worried the joystick doesn't really have enough buttons for elite. Any advice on which way to go (or a different way entirely) would be appreciated!

u/DudethatCooks · 1 pointr/simracing

I believe it is, but it is not as strong as say the T300. The other negative is you can't replace the wheel with other thrustmaster wheels.

The T300 offers 1080 degrees of rotation and the TX offers 900. If 900 degrees is enough for you, you could try this maybe?

You could upgrade the wheel if you want in the future or if you want a better wheel to start you could go with this.

I'd personally go with the first option since you get the shifter and better pedal set. There are plenty of options to go with though. I see a lot of people suggest fanatec pedals. I have the T3PA pedals and they work great for me. Hope this helps let me know if you have any questions.

Alright tomorrow is the first time I'll really be diving in. I've had the game for a long time now but could not get used to the controls with keyboard and mouse At least not to an extent I felt was fun. But all you seem to really love the game so took some of my cash back money and bought.

So any advice for getting started with the game or even the controls would be appreciated.

Is awesome. Super cheap and works great. I got it on sale for 17 and it works awesome. It's on sale for 22 now.

u/DozTK421 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

First, sorry for my shortcutting on the joystick. I was referring to the Thrustmaster T16000M. Same idea, basically, other than I am less interested in the full SIM, and am more likely to go with a HOSAS rather than HOTAS experience. As a side, I have a passionate interest in peripheral interfaces overall. I worked with a rehabilitation center in a Kinesiology College at a University, and I helped with the IT for laboratories which were using video game technology to combine with engineering to help people with disabilities. That included everything from people with MS interacting with Ocular Rift, to wheelchair rehab, etc. So I really geek out on ultra high dpi controls.

You did answer my question on that I would need an expansion for planetary landings and buggy exploration. That is a thing I like about the game's potential. I watched some videos by ObsidianAnt and they did interest me.

I think for me to subscribe, realizing that I'll have to spend some cash to do what I want and face some grindy elements, I'll basically see if I can find some social interaction that makes it worth my while.

I also use the VKB Rudder Pedals.

http://store-x-plane-org.3dcartstores.com/VKB-T-Rudder-Pedals-MkIV_p_571.html

As for matching sticks, I am waiting to get the VIRPIL grips since they fit on the Warthog bases.

https://virpil.com/en/filtered/gpips/

-------- || -------- || --------

Alternatively, you can go with two VKB Gunfighter bases and wait for VKB SIM to release their newer right handed and left handed grips (which you can purchase later).

https://vkbcontrollers.com/?product=vkb-sim-gunfighter-base-only

Or perhaps two VKB Gladiator Pros for now and update both grips or just the left grip later when they eventually release:

https://vkbcontrollers.com/?product=vkb-gladiator

-------- || -------- || --------

Another way to go about it is getting two T16000 sticks (for a dual stick setup):

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQEDEEW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_8UXkzbM4P2BW7

Or just go with the T16000 HOTAS (with or without pedals):

Now although there are other options, like the Saitek products (X52, X55/X56) and CH products, those just aren't my cup of tea and too many problems plague the Saitek products that they don't seem to be worth investing in. I returned mine and got the Warthog setup and it's so much better. Night and day difference.

I hope I have listed enough choices at different price points to help you make a more informed decision.

And YES, DUAL STICKS are the best :D

u/Ophichius · 2 pointsr/Warthunder

Well, $40 is the bare minimum.

The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is an entry-level twist stick. A lot of folks will recommend the Thrustmaster T.16000M, which is a notable step up with better sensors, but clocks in at about twice the price.

For super cheap headtracking, you're looking at using FaceTrackNoIR or opentrack and bashing together your own point tracker. The camera will run you about ten bucks, and the LEDs, wires and battery pack a buck or two, plus some time to assemble everything.

If you throw more money at it, you can either go for TrackHat or TrackIR, with TrackIR being something of the gold standard, but also commensurately expensive.

I'd recommend starting off with a cheap stick, a webcam, and facetrack. If you get bit by the bug, build your own point tracker to improve your head tracking quality, and look into getting rudder pedals, followed by upgrading your stick.

u/mynameisntjeffrey · 4 pointsr/GearVR

I can confirm that that specific moga controller will not work with mincraft, or any vr games. It has a really stupid way to connect, and it just feels uncomfortable. Minecraft uses all the buttons on a normal sized controller, so you're really going to need to get one. I bought a cheap 20 dollar one that has a ok build quality but has enough buttons to actually play the game. The analog sticks are pretty good but the triggers are simply one button press and the d-pad is pretty awful. But it works great regardless.

Edit: here's the one I bought.

u/MyCatEdwin · 2 pointsr/GameDeals

While gmessad's recommendation is great, I would say the Steam Controller is a super solid choice too. If you can wait a bit, GameStop and Amazon have deals on them pretty often. If you have basically any existing PC gamepads you'll be fine while you wait.

If you don't mind used (my controller has been indestructible the year and a half I've had it), Amazon has a used one with Prime for $35 https://www.amazon.com/Steam-Controller-SteamOS/dp/B016KBVBCS?th=1

u/MrAureliusR · 1 pointr/AndroidGaming

I've been playing a lot more Android games now that I've upgraded to a Pixel 2 XL. I love this phone. I have very big hands (I'm 6'7"... generally most things are too small for me) and even when I customise the button layout for, say, My Boy! or My Old Boy! I still find my hands getting cramped after a while.

I have been looking at controllers that allow phones to clip on, and there's quite a few on Amazon Canada that look good. I am leaning towards the GameSir G3s with included bracket, GameSir T1s (slightly more expensive for some reason?) or the "Mad Giga". I also was considering the Bonusis STK7003 though it's more expensive and looks like it might be flimsier. Those are all generally within my budget -- $30-45ish.

When I used my Vita a lot, I had to buy a handgrip attachment for it, and even then I would still get hand cramps. It's very difficult to tell from the pictures which of these is the largest. As reference, I really like the size of the Steam Controller, which I've used a lot, and PS3 controllers are good for decent lengths of time as well (though I do eventually cramp up with those as well).

In any case, any recommendations or information about which of these controller types are good for large hands would be greatly appreciated! I could potentially just buy a controller-grip shaped case, but I think I'd prefer to actually have a full size controller.

SC noob here, I don't even own the game yet. I'd check out the T16000M. I use it for DCS World and it's a pretty nice HOTAS for relatively cheap compared to super high end sets.

One thing I'm kinda curios about is how lucrative using a HOTAS or HOSAS will be vs a mouse. From some videos I've seen so far it looks like using a mouse could give a major advantage as people are making pinpoint shots using the mouse whereas with a joystick it would be super difficult.

u/Robrocker51 · 1 pointr/arma

The newer thrustmaster T16000m setup is a really good choice.

Stick and Throttle Amazon Link

That's the throttle and stick for roughly $100 which is a great price, the package with the pedals is closer to $200.

I have the stick alone that I got for ~$50 and it's pretty great, looking to get the matching throttle now. Also, personally I don't think pedals will make a big deal in ArmA but I'm no pro, so hopefully someone else can help you out there.

You should take a look at r/hotas, there's good help there.

u/CMDR_CrobaR_o7 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

so, this is really all based on a person's preference. there are quite a few HOTAS's that are used for this game. they vary in price, quality, and number of buttons/hats/switches/etc.

here are some examples of "reasonably priced" ones:

Thrustmaster T.16000M

They advertise that they are somehow selling a 12nm Direct Drive wheel for $399 that is competitive to the $900 Accuforce wheel.

However, what they fail to mention are the sustained torque figures. The only "affordable" servo motor that can hit 12nm (as they advertise) is the MiGe 130ST-M04025. This budget servo motor is only capable of 4NM sustained.

This means that it's NOT a competitor to the Simexperience Accuforce wheel that offers 13nm sustained (with a 16nm peak).
This means that it's only capable of competing with the other ~$400 wheels-sets like the T300RS, which Feel VR is charging $599 for on Indiegogo

Hope this helps!

Measured sustained/holding torque (excluding peaks):
Logitech DFPro: ~1.1 Nm (rumored, unable to find loadcell/torque measurment)
Logitech DFGT: <2.5 Nm
Logitech G920/G29 2.2 Nm
Logitech G27: 2.3 Nm
Mige 80ST-M02430: 2.39 Nm
Logitech G25: 2.5 Nm
Fanatec GT2: 2.6 Nm
Fanatec GT3RS v2: 2.6 Nm
Thrustmaster TX: 3.9 Nm
Thrustmaster T300: 3.9 Nm
MiGe 130ST-M04025: 4 Nm
Thrustmaster T500RS: 4.4 Nm
Fanatec CSW v1: 4.8 Nm
Fanatec CSW v1.5: 5.2 Nm
Fanatec CSL Elite: 6.0 Nm
Thrustmaster TS-PC Racer: 6.0 Nm
Fanatec CSW v2: 6.0 Nm
Fanatec CSW v2.5 : 7.3 Nm
Leo Bodnar Simsteering2: 8.05 Nm
Mige 130ST-M10010: 10 Nm
Lenze MCS12H15L: 11.4 Nm
Simexperience Accuforce v1/v2: 13 Nm
Mige 130ST-M15015: 14.4 Nm
Fanatec Podium DD1: 15 Nm (as advertised, not confirmed)
FREX DD WHEEL: 16 Nm
Fantec Podium DD2: 18 Nm (as advertised, not confirmed)

Note: Most Mige 10/15 users run their motors at ~25-50% torque.
Note2: Holding torque is arguably the most important factor when it comes to using a wheel. However other factors such as smoothness, linearity, drive type, peak torque, ease of use/setup/configuration, game support, software, etc etc should not be ignored when picking a wheel. Research accordingly.

u/Loogoo · -1 pointsr/Tekken

Honestly, if this is your first stick, you aren't sure if you'll like it yet. Don't spend a shit ton of money. I got this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B019MFPLC0/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1517491228&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=mayflash+f500
People say that you need a controller plugged in all the time if you play on console but because tekken has legacy support I've never had to do that. Nor have I had to on SFV or dragon ball fighterz. Once I realized I wanted it to definitely use a fighting stick I swapped out the buttons and stick for qanba parts that work just fine. In fact its amazing and overall I spent as much as a normal qanba.

Pattern work without rudder is tough, I bought these despite all the bad reviews and I'm glad I did. Lots of people complaining they're made of plastic even though the pedals are strong enough that two of me could stand on them and they wouldn't break. I bought it 'used' off Amazon for $81, which means somebody bought it, didn't like it, put it back in the box and shipped it back. FSX:SE has issues with getting pedals to work right, with these pedals it's the brakes in particular. But a little fiddling and they work great.

Try running some flights all-visual with some sectionals and default FSX scenery. No VOR, no DME, no NDB, no GPS. The FSX scenery makes it tougher than real life, and that's great.

I only have VATSIM experience but what I know is... PilotEdge is quite realistic, but it's $20/month or $180 a year. Remember what that could buy otherwise, you're also limit to certain hours (0800-2300 PST) and I hope you like SoCal. Supposedly IVAO has very limited non-Europe coverage. VATSIM coverage can be spotty, but it's usually rather predictable. Audio quality is terrible, but obviously good enough that people can understand one another. Realism is at your discretion, many ARTCCs will try to go as realistic as reasonable. VAs are a plus.

Keep in mind, nothing's stopping you from trying. VATSIM/IVAO are free, PilotEdge has a 2 week trial.

Don't limit yourself to dual sticks; you need a throttle with an analog joystick for the best experience. Dual sticks is only good if you love decoupled mode. This relatively inexpensive combo can do everything as it has an analog nub on the front and paddles that add an extra interesting element of control:

I highly, highly recommend John's SNES emulator. He made NES and GBA ones as well. I purchased all of them and have used each of them thoroughly. They may cost a few dollars but the way I see it I'm gaining access to thousands of games for less than the price of a book. They all support controllers and have heavily modifiable virtual interfaces and screen aspect ratios. If you are interested in a gamepad I was recently eyeing this one. Most likely going to purchase it on Christmas to test it out.

u/AedandoRL · 5 pointsr/EmulationOnAndroid

The form factor of the iPega PG-9033 is nice, but the issue with that gamepad design is that it is incredibly top-heavy with modern smartphones and will put discomfort on your wrists while playing.

I stopped using my Moga Hero Power for that reason alone, as when I made the transition from my S3 Mini to my S8, it was incredibly uncomfortable to use after 30 minutes of play.

If you want to stick with a universal iPega controller, I would recommend the iPega PG-9055 ("Red Spider").

It pretty much fits any phone and even 7" tablets because it uses fasteners to grip your phone, rather than a telescopic arm.

If your phone is on the smaller side (i.e. 5"-5.75") and you use a thin TPU/rubber case, the "Wee" gamepad is probably the highest quality one money can buy. It's an exact copy of the PS Vita's design, except with the left thumbstick and d-pad inversed. All of the buttons are clicky microswitches like the PS Vita, rather than being membrane+contact like everything else. The L2 and R2 triggers aren't analog, but they basically act as a second set of bumpers (and have the same clicky microswitches).

After an initial struggle getting it set up and working properly, I gotta say I'm really happy with the Matricom XYBA. Can be had from Amazon for $22. Given the price, I'm pleasantly surprised by the build quality. It's solid, got some weight to it, and while I've only had mine for a few weeks weeks so far the buttons and analog sticks feel just like they did when it was brand new.

The initial struggle setting it up with RetroPie came down to finding this review on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B01EO5QPN2/R2B6DAP4EI7TQG/ref=cm_cr_dp_mb_rvw_1

After following those steps and customizing gamepad.cfg accordingly, everything has been working great. Once paired, it will reconnect in a few seconds from powering up. And this is all with the on-board Bluetooth on the RPi 3 by the way. At under $25 per controller, you can afford to get a decent four-player setup.

Just FYI, if you are already using CH devices go with the Pro Pedals and do this mod. It makes configuring everything much simpler as it can all be done in the CH programming software. If you are mixing devices from different manufactures or are using Thrustmaster products I would recommend looking at Thrustmaster's new TFRP pedals. They have a great price point and will not need to be modded. I got to try the TFRP Pedals out at the recent press event. They worked quite well. However, I would not replace an existing set of CH pedals unless all my other hardware was made by Thrustmaster and programmable in TARGET.

I have tried both setups and prefer using a CH Fighter Stick and Pro Throttle over a Warthog stick and throttle in Star Citizen. The lighter resistance on the CH stick allows me to be more responsive and precise when aiming, The CH Pro Throttle's analogue thumb stick is also invaluable for strafing. Because of this I prefer using my full CH setup for Star Citizen.

There's an infographic that puts the previous version of this stick in shit tier, so don't get confused. This new one is supposed to be great for newbies since it doesn't break the bank, and it can be modded with Sanwa parts easily.

I don't have any experience with fighting sticks, but it feels great to me. If I do my inputs purposefully, it all registers the way I expect so that's probably a good sign.

> I'm no expert but I always thought prices paid for things at the national level depended on many political factors like taxes, trade deals, and the relative strength of a nation's currency?

Absolutely. That's why I expect to pay 5 - 20% more for an item in Canada, after exchange rate. However the Steam Controller was selling for ~$130 on amazon.ca, if I remember right.

edit: OK, it's down to just under $100 if you add in the import fees. When I was checking the price obsessively for months it was more like $130 but that was well over a year ago now, eventually I gave up and was waiting for it to come to Steam in Canada. I happened to check my Wishlist yesterday and it still said "Coming Soon!" :/

if you're flying DCS and BoS, I would suggest getting a HOTAS yes. The Logitech Extreme 3d Pro is somewhat a HOTAS and is very good but the Thrustmaster ones you listed are better but if you can afford this one, it'll be the right fit.

TrackIR is very much recommended but it's pricey. I suggest you try out flying first without it and see if you'd really want one. Using trackhats in your stick to look around is cumbersome after I had a TrackIR myself.

The Thrustmaster 16000M, either by itself, as a hotas, or as a hosas is regarded as a good entry level stick by many.

edit: best way to make credits in-game by far is mining, either surface mining for painite or core mining for void opals. Easily 100m/hr or more if you know what you're doing, and/or follow one of the many guides on youtube. I can't personally advise though as I've been actively avoiding it. I don't want to be rich so quick I have no idea what to do with it.

u/billymcguffin · 3 pointsr/starcitizen

Personally I don't think a HOTAS is required, but it is certainly more immersive and you do tend to get more granular control of your ship versus a keyboard.

Probably the best value HOTAS right now is the T16000M FCS, which is currently ~100 USD. You may also want to check out /r/hotas for more in depth advice.

I haven't bought the game yet but it looks really cool, I hope to be able to use these peripherals when I buy it. Thanks for working toward a quick bug fix

I have a Thrustmaster HOTAS

And a Gladiator flight stick

Sticks like this or this are definitely "not good enough". If you read the associated reviews and they speak positively it is almost always in context of "budget" and "easily modded".

If you've never played on generic parts vs. good ones you'd be surprised how big the difference is. It isn't just some weird snake oil elitism.

u/Elrox · 3 pointsr/battlestations

It's a G29 but I have pulled the pedals out from their casing and made my own retractable pedal box. It works just the same. There is also a similar G920, the G29 works with PC and PS3/4 while the G920 works with PC and Xbox one.

I would say that a wheel adds a great deal of immersion to racing, there are cheaper options but I upgraded pretty much immediately because the paddles on the cheaper wheels are rubbish. They are force feedback so you can feel the car moving through the wheel.

My wheel is barely considered entry level, in fact hardcore enthusiasts will not accept anything less than a Thrustmaster T300 which is out of my price range.

Yeah, I'd really recommend wireless. The XBOX 360 controller comes with a really long wire, and since I play on a laptop, I play sometimes on the couch or on the floor or just in front of the laptop. This lead to some wear and tear of the wire. And it was a hassle to fold it every time! So I'd recommend wireless if you're like me.

The Steam controller's $49.99 on Amazon.

I'd suggest getting the T16000 FCS (with the TWCS throttle) - that's about $100. Then to be honest with your remaining $400, I'd suggest going straight for a Rift for $399 - nothing compares to flying a plane in VR, it's awesome, and DCS works brilliantly with it.

I'm not religious about it. My Saitek X52 Pro, which was ready and able for 2 years, finally just broke down and stopped working. Unfortunately, Logitech recently bought Saitek and the current reviews are not positive (I assume there are some build/quality issues as they integrate).

So, I just bought, but have not yet received, a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS Controller, which is not-too-pricey and seemed to have solid reviews, especially related to ED, when googled.

If the reviews had been better on the Logtech X55, I would have gone there as I was generally happy with my X52 Pro (although, in retrospect, it was my second one since I had to RMA the first stick right after I bought it....hrrrrm).

So, I am hoping the Thrustmaster:

is a keeper, at least until and if Steel Series comes out with something.

If your budget is sufficiently flexible:

I think the T300 Alcantara is the best bang for your buck near that price range.

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T300-Ferrari-Alcantara-Racing-Wheel/dp/B015KJ0SES/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1497120210&sr=1-3&keywords=t300&th=1

There is a big jump in performance once you upgrade to T300 level. Fanatec and the newer Thrustmaster wheels will perform better, but not in a radically different way. You won't get qualitatively better performance (to my knowledge) unless you spend upwards of 1000 on a direct drive wheel.

The Alcantara wheel has an amazing feel and size for the price. The pedals are also decent, and the most of the more expensive wheels (newer thrustmaster, fanatec, direct drive) don't come with pedals.

Depending on your budget, you may want to put off buying the shifter for later. I don't think I have a shifter recommendation, since I think that depends on your preferences. Eg, Sturdiness, ease of mode switching, shorter throw (clubsport) Longer throw, handbrake option (th8a)

While I actually prefer keyboard + mouse for most games, the Steelseries XL is my favorite PC controller (because sometimes I don't want to sit at a desk to game). A bit of an XBox controller shape, but with the Playstation button/stick layout (having the sticks straight across from each other has always made more sense to me).

The Steam Controller takes a bit of getting used to, but is great for games that weren't designed for a controller as it acts as a trackpad. It is the one I use if I play Civilization on the couch:

Are you on PC? Is the Thrustmaster T150 (PC and PS4) or Thrustmaster TMX (PC and Xbox one) too expensive? This is as budget as I'd go if you want brand new. The downside is you only get two pedals but do have paddle shifters. If this is too pricy try searching craigslist around your area for any used Logitech Driving Force GT's (two pedals, no h-shifter, but has a sequential shifter), or a Logitech g27 (three pedals, comes with h-shifter).

If you do want three pedals and an h-shifter, then I think the Logitech g29 (PC and PS4) or Logitech g920 (PC and Xbox one) are the current best value as far as brand new. With craigslist you can possibly find better deals locally, but it can be a crapshoot.

A pretty solid choice is always the TM T.16000. You're really not going to get anything worth having in the sub-100 range new. If you're looking for something a bit more, the Logitec X52 pro (don't touch the non-pro, it has bad QA issues) is a great middle-ground HOTAS with good durability and features. If you can find an X52P used, you'll spend roughly T.16000 price that'l probably end up lasting longer.

Although it's worth mentioning, the A8 in your computer probably won't be too happy playing a whole lot of anything. Money would be better spent on upgrades.

Also seconding this. I have an S6 Edge as well and I'm using this controller which works really well and is small enough to carry in a pocket. Currently playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PPSSPP and it runs like a dream.
