-This was generous gift from my SO's mom. It may not be the best tent out there, but at free it can't be beat.
-Got this for its small size and light weight. Future winter camping trips are a possibility, in which case I plan on snagging a wool blanket of sleeping bag liner.
-Simple basic sleeping pad, I've been using these since scouts and have wanted for nothing more, especially because of its light weight.
-In the event of winter camping, is this enough to insulate from the ground? If not, what could be added to my sleep system to keep me insulated from the ground?
-Lightweight and simple, these were cheap and seemed straight forward.
-They stack with the majority of either piece's empty space facing each other, allowing for decently dry storage for matches etc. inside.
-Comes with a tight fitting mesh ditty bag
-Another straight forward and cheap piece,
-This is really an optional piece, I plan on bringing it along on trips with big groups or when cooking meat is in the cards.
-These are the camping gold standard in my book, been using them since scouts.
-Came in a decently affordable combo pack, plan on using them for food/toiletries storage and bear bags.
-Love this little knife, cheap but durable and was a shaver straight out of the box.
-Came with a super thick plastic sheath
9)Hatchet: Estwing Hatchet - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TNWD40?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
-Heard this was a classic, people say they've still got the one's their grandfather's used. It's heavy, but I'm happy with the tradeoff.
-Got it sharpened well enough to cleanly slice through paper at the moment
-Great sharpener, pretty much the go to field sharpener from what I've gathered.
-Only took a couple minutes to learn how to use, the only hard part is consistently following the bevel through each stroke, but it gets easier.
-Very great, medium size towels with their own tote
-Seems great, picked it up at REI physical store then read reviews and got spooked, we'll see though, a minority of the reviewers swear by it.
-Just in case it sucks, any suggestions for a collapsible water container of equal size/price?
-These came free with my water filter, and they have many good reviews. If they do well, I may buy some extras.
-More showing of my primitivist ass, and I thought I could take some weight off of my SO by carrying enough water for the two of us.
-Got these a long time ago when I knew less, they are pretty bulky and my first item I want to replace
-SO's mom gifted this this Christmas, so amazing and thoughtful, one of the best gifts I've ever gotten and I love the color
-Pack of flashlights (might not bring all four) - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V639BNC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01
Items not shown:
-Always a tin or bag of Drum Tobacco and papers
-Kindle, old generation one
-Collapsible trowel
-Paracord
-Burlap shoulder bag for gathering kindling etc
Items still wanted (suggestions greatly appreciated):
-Knife for SO
-Work gloves
-Plastic flasks for booze
-Belt pouch
-Higher quality tarp
-Knife Sharpener
-Sleeping bag liner or wool blanket
-Any food suggestions!
-Rain cover for pack
-Smell proof food bags
I don't have much experience outside of scouts, so I'm very open to critique of my setup. I will warn that I am very much into primitivism, and camping for me is a gateway to a backcountry, esthetic lifestyle I one day I hope to live, so some of my gear choices may not always be the most efficient. Any advice from a primitivist or purist standpoint is doubly appreciated.
Oh my god I'm so sorry about your puppy. ;_; a bajillion hugs I can't imagine that, I'd completely break down if I lost my dog.
I nominate /u/cats_and_vibrators for a wishlist item. She's amazing and I love her. She is always there for everyone, super supportive and caring. She deserves everything. Love you Maggie. <3
If I win I would love the kindle, I've had the paperwhite on my Maybe Someday... list for a while now. I love reading and having that would be amazing.
Congrats on the apartment! I love household-y stuff. You definitely need a good knife set!
And this awesome ice mold.
Mixing bowls are essential, and these are my favourite.
Cutest sushi service ever!
And for when you finally get a minute to relax, this bath oil would be perfect.
Thank you for the wonderful contest! I hope you have a really great week. :]
Bam!
If you go to an organic market, or farmers market you can generally get good ingredients that are fresh. As for the fish you would want to hit up an asian market, or even Costco! I got some fresh Sashimi"Tuna" the other day from Costco and its super good!
Generally you can make sushi with anything :) A basic sushi normally has Rice, carrots, celery, avocado, and tuna all wrapped up in Nori "Seaweed". But you can spice it up with crab, squid, onions, cream cheese" i like to mix Siracha with it" , sesame seeds, fried wontons, or whatever sounds yummy!!
The beauty of cooking is that there isn't a wrong way to do it!! If a combination of stuff sounds good, try it!
And your gonna want to get a bamboo sushi roller as well. Heres a reference~
I agree with Nessie about cooking the rice. The last time I made homemade sushi, I made vegetable Maki was for some vegan friends. I used Jicama for my rice by pulsing it three times it in my food processor. It's a watery root vegetable which I needed to wrap the "rice'' in a towel so it wouldn't make my nori soggy! All in all, it was a hit!
With that said, decide what kind of sushi you want to make. When I made the Maki, I used strips of red pepper and cucumber for crunch. Your best bets are vegetables such as avocado for a smooth, buttery taste. Have fun experimenting!
Next, try to find untoasted Nori sheets like the Emerald Cove brand or Navitas Naturals at your grocery or health food store; raw seaweed carries fiber, as well as vitamins C and B12.
Buy imitation crab meat if you can't find the real kind, bake or grill flaky fish like salmon or tilapia (you can also make a sashimi roll if you like it raw). Grocery stores selling their own sushi will either have raw ginger and roe separate (its free with a pack or if you just swipe some) or inside the packs.
You can pick up a bamboo mat for fool-proof hand rolling or just use a regular cutting board and roll as tight as you can. Next, slice your sushi with a kitchen knife and enjoy immediately or store in the fridge in a plastic container for a day or so.
Not to be a jerk, but honestly, in going through the photos, I feel like you could probably fill a couple garbage bags just in trash. I suggest going through and quickly gathering garbage, sweeping the floor and then assessing.
Go through your make-up and toss anything old. It's not hygienic to keep old mascara/eye products, etc and I really doubt you need that entire white drawer thing for make-up unless you're a make-up artist or something. Go through the kitchen and toss anything expired. Buy a small collapsible step stool so you can access the cabinets. Really think through how you use your kitchen and buy items that are multipurpose. Can you pare down your pots and pans? You could use the wall the garbage is against to hang pots if needed. How often to you use your microwave? Can you justify having one? The pantry sucks, no getting around it. I suggest buying square containers for dry goods, like your rice, beans, etc so they are upright instead of flopping over on everything else. The pantry looks deep, but stuff will get buried in the back if you can't see it, so maybe use some shoeboxes or something in the back to elevate things that go in the back. Or get those wire shelfthings. You could also store your plates vertically in there and free up cupboard space for pantry items.
Your closets are totally being underutilized....where are the clothes? Wash all the laundry, sort through it, and start hanging stuff up. You may be able to free up a drawer in your dresser that could be used for something else. Looks like there's room for a shelf above the current closet shelf - again, get a trusty collapsible step stool. The wall in the closet would be a prime place to hang a vertical shoe rack. This over the door style could easily just be hung on a wall instead of over a door. Shelf dividers can help get the closet shelves under control.
I'd work on those things, and then do a major purge, and then look into other storage - you may find out you don't need as much extra storage as you think.
Happy Birthday!!
I know my wife would love these, so maybe you would too! Sushi gift set
Happy Birthday /u/LadyAmpersand hope your day is amazing as well!
Of course - The only essential ingredients are just kim (dried seaweed sheets, aka "nori" in Japanese, the same kind you use for sushi rolls) and bap (rice), hence the name "kimbap", literally translated to "seaweed rice". Think of it as an Asian sandwich - just like you would put any ingredients you want between two slices of bread to make a sandwich, you do the same wrapped in rice and seaweed to make kimbap. The ones I made here are pretty traditional ingredients, except I used Bulgogi for the meat instead of simple sauteed beef.
All the ingredients in the middle:
Bulgogi
Sauteed carrots, julienned (just a little oil, salt, and pepper)
Blanched spinach
Fried egg cut into long strips
Danmuji (Korean pickled raddish)
Tips: use short-grain sticky rice (Sushi rice) and while the rice is still hot, add a couple of drops of rice vinegar and a sprinkle of sugar while fanning it out and mixing quickly (to air out the strong vinegar taste). This keeps the rice from drying out and adds a little sweetness to the rolls.
Once you have all the ingredients prepared, lay out the kim on a bamboo roller and spread the rice evenly to cover the bottom 3/4 of the kim (the rice should be cooled by now, do not use hot rice as the steam will make the kim soggy.)
Lay out all the ingredients in horizontal strips in the middle of the rice. Gently lift the bottom end of the bamboo roller and roll from the bottom. This will take some practice.
Once the kimbap is tightly rolled, rub a drop of sesame oil on the outside and slice them into about 3/4 inch pieces.
That's it! It does take a bit of time from start to finish but it's so worth it!
I think i'll try spicy tuna kimbap next. I'll try to post progress pics as well.
Enjoy!
(I hope that wasn't too long)
I don't know what kind of sushi maker you're talking about, but this is how I do it at home:
This is the only equipment I use. I put that on a flat surface, then i put a square piece of sushi paper (nari? nori? the seaweed) on it. THen, I personally do a layer of sticky rice, cucumber, cream cheese, and imitation crab. Roll using the bamboo mat. Make sure the seaweed ends overlap and perss together tightly, otherwise you will have a sushi mess on the floor. I usually let the whole roll sit while I make the others. Once all full rolls are done, I cut to desired width.
A 10-pack of seaweed is about $5, plus the other things.... I dunno. Let's say $10. For $10 I usually can make about 30-45 sushi circles + end scraps from the larger rolls (which are fun to snack on while making the full rolls)
Totally worth it. But you don't need a kit. The bamboo roller is SUPER helpful though.
for dinnerware, I'd suggest the white correlle plates, bowls, etc. they come in square or round, a good value, go w/ everything, & break resistant.
For the table & chairs, go w/ wood, natural to brown. (a lot of options here depending on budget & preferences) I personally like the looks of the reproduction Eames molded chairs for dining chairs
For cookware: Dansk Kobenstyle is really great looking & can add a pop of color. The enamel can chip though. 3-ply stainless steel pots & pans are great. Tramontina for an affordable option.
Are you looking for something fun or like a home gift? There are some really cool space plates and cups on Amazon, I own them and they’re great.

This food face plate is just about the best thing ever. I think you would love it.
If I win, I would really like this item.
Thank you so much for hosting, and don't worry be happy ;]
We are very new to RVing too but we used to go camping a lot. We use an Amazon basic set that is pretty durable!! We also have small boxes inside that cabinet and one of those like rubber dumping towels between plates.
They are super cheap but of good quality!! Check them out:

Not a fan of paper or plastic either!!
I'd do the diaper keg, if you're not comfortable with the girly party. It's way more laid back, and you can still register for things you may need. Have a friend/family member pass the word on about where you're registered. A piece of advice- if you want to limit the time you spend with the lady party, throw the party during a snack time rather than a meal time. Nothing clears people out faster than only having finger foods on hand instead of a meal. Crudites, a cheese and cracker platter, small sandwiches, a cake, and punch are pretty typical for baby showers. This particular friend I'm throwing it for is also of the non-girly type, and we chose this pattern for her.
Yes they do that's why we changed our mind! We're renting gold glass flower chargers for $2/each. They sell for $12-15 each so renting is a much better choice for us. The rental company also had gold beaded ones for slightly cheaper but I really liked the glass ones.
Edit: These are the chargers we're renting! I love them!
Does that wheat straw material look like this kind of product? I saw a variety products using wheat straw plastic on the market and I bought the plates for curiosity. I'm pretty happy with them so I did some more research to see if it is really eco-friendly material. I found some information that wheat straw plastic is fully biodegradable within 6month in the facility. Here is the reference and website I found the information: http://www.worldcentric.org/about-compostables/materials/wheatstraw
Red Worms: A fast and efficient system to compost World Centric® brand compostable plates ; Cicada Hoyt; Ms. Buffy Sexton 7th grade science fair; Science Fair Research Paper; Provided January, 29 2013.
I noticed you have a Bento box, so you could use some rice molds. I don't know if you've ever made rice balls, but it's easier than you'd think, stores well, and makes a good lunch. There are a lot of other cool bento things under $5.
Could I list two and then you could choose from the two or from my wl? I would love either this for my three kiddos, or This my mind is yearning to read it.
Thanks for the contest and Happy Cake Day!
That's pretty specific. Your best bet would be to just do some google scouring. If it's ceramic the quality is pretty much as good as any other ceramic, cost would depend on whether it's handmade or vintage or simply what company it comes from.
From what I know, quality is a much bigger deal when you're trying to find bare clay pots to season. (but that doesn't seem like something you're after, which makes your job easier)
edit: here's a few I found: one, two, three
I bought my wife these plastic egg molds that make shapes like heart, car, animals etc for bento boxes. Works great as long as you have the right sized eggs.

Alright, so for rice cookers I was looking at this. Cheap and has some pretty good reviews. Do you think I should get the 10 cup version or spend a little few bucks extra on the 20 cup? I was also going to get this "Japanese Rice Washing Bowl"
For a bamboo mat how does this look?
For knives, I have a few thin ceramic blades. Do you think will those work well enough?
EDIT: I saw this knife on one of those weekly threads. I think I may spend some money and buy it.
OMG I HAD TOO MUCH TROUBLE JUST PICKING ONE!!!!!! ^^please ^^don't ^^hurt ^^me

Ooohhh soooo I just found THESE whilst stumbling around a new Amazon subreddit and had to show someone haha. I would get these, and a solid black set for like cups and junk.
This one is smaller, but doesn't have a handle.
This one looks smaller and comes with a pie plate.
Hope this helps!
Would could have threads of cool finds on amazon, or wherever, things everyone should add to their wishlist. Like this
If you want to use a full dinner plate (instead of just a small plate) I recommend plates that have a dipped center. Meaning the outside of the plate is higher (and slanted) than the middle - and aim to only fill up the actually center of the plate. That way you have some wiggle room if you're eating something larger (like a single piece of meat) while still limiting available area to pile food in.
If you can acquire one of the appropriate size, a cake carrier (example) will certainly make things easier.
If it's going to rain, wear a coat rather than bringing an umbrella - carrying a cake and your umbrella will get annoying fast.
Oh ok, these were the ones I was talking about here
