I'm in school too. I actually just bought most of my textbooks today. Cha-ching! Had to get my husbands as well. Sigh, one of my classes has FOUR textbooks for it this coming semester. I go to the University of Victoria and I am working on two degrees right now. I'm primarily finishing up my Anthropology degree. I should be done that at the end of next summer. However, I am also working on my Psychology degree. I'm not officially listed as being in Psychology but the advisor said I can start working on the classes I need for it for when I'm done anthro. It will take about another two years to finish my Psych degree. I actually just finished my summer semester up and got pretty good grades! I got an A in my developmental psychology course, an A- in my cultural anth course, and a B in my archaeology course. I am not a fan of archaeology. Still, I could have done better.

One neat thing about my school is that it tends to have a broad-based curriculum. For instance, with anthropology when you go off to graduate school you tend to specialize in something. You can specialize in medical anthropology or just in cultural in general, or you could specialize in archaeology in general or in coastal archaeology, etc. At UVic it is broad so your MA in anthro is your MA in anthro. You don't really have a speciality. Instead, you have to take courses and learn stuff from all the main disciplines.

This pen would help me out a lot as it's pretty comfortable to write with and I take a lot of notes at school and talk to a lot of people where I have to take notes. Anthropology and psychology equals a lot of writing!

These notebooks would be fantastic because in anthro we have to journal a lot and keep field notes and just, as I mentioned, write a lot. And these are fantastic quality and don't break quickly like others I've used.

Finally, these thank you notes would be amazing as I sometimes get bursaries and need to write thank you cards. Or these pens would be helpful as we have to make a stupid amount of posters in anthropology. Yes, I actually prefer writing a paper to doing up a poster. We get marks on how visually appealing it is as well as how relevant it is.

I think all of the stuff I listed can be found in my stationery/art folder if I win. :) Any one of the item would be a huge help in my school career. It's a shame that it's so expensive to go, still, I am grateful for the opportunity to do so.

Speakers will make your life so much better. I'd recommend getting a shower speaker too, your flatmates will love you.

A door stop is the right answer.

If you get a memory foam mattress topper your life will be so much better. It makes any bed amazing, and, although they aren't particularly cheap, they can last a very long time. I have this one

Get some good quality pens and books of paper. You don't want the refil pads as they always fall apart sooner or later, get some which have metal binding on one side. For pens I always got a box of these or these. They make the vast amounts of notes you need to take much better.

Don't buy the recommended reading until you have checked how many copies the library has. There's a good chance you'll be able to read them enough without paying for them, or search Bookname.pdf into google and it will probably be there.

Pint glasses are very useful things to have, but I found it added a nice touch to my flat if they were all borrowed from pubs.

get a multipack of playing cards on the cheap from amazon. You'll probably get through a fair few packs in first year. Some poker chips were a nice thing to own as well. In 3rd year I got Cards Against humanity as well, and it is a very good game for predrinks

Get minimum 1 good frying pan, 1 good saucepan, a good wooden chopping board, a good chefs knife, a baking sheet, and a colander.

Get a bottle opener like this one and you will have hours of fun pinging the caps at people

I didn't use mine much in 1st year, but all the other years of uni my bike was a great thing to have. It allows you to shop further away (so cheaper) and reduces your reliance on public transport. It also means you can get out of your area of the city occasionally, which is nice.

A french press means you can make a whole pot of great coffee for your flatmates when you are all getting up after a heavy night, at which point they might crown you or start worshiping you or some shit

Well, everyone has different preferences, but I'd suggest getting one with pictures (this is lovely and very popular - she might find her friends have got it also, if they color) and one with patterns, (don't have this one personally, picked it at random) so she can decide which she likes to color more.

Fine tip markers like Staedtler, and a set of decent but not top-of-the-line pencils like Prismacolor would be a good start. If that's more than you wanted to spend, a smaller selection would probably be fine, or a cheaper good brand such as Staedtler Noris colors which I personally love. Oh, and get her a pencil sharpener and eraser as stocking fillers :)

A good set of pens is really fun for creative types. Pentel SignPens (either these or these) are fantastic. Sakura and Stabilo make great ones as well. I like previously offered highlighter ideas and love my new see-through ones that I linked there. Also what about a set of sketch pencils?

What about some paracord and accessories for making guinea pig leashes? There are tons of sites that tell how to make them, she might be into it.

I also just recently got a little more into makeup and found an AMAZING set of cheap makeup brushes as a starter set - These and I'm actually getting them for my 18 yo niece for Christmas.

While studying, I like to have something playing in the background. I like to put something light-hearted on, such as Easy A or Bridesmaids. A funny movie is something that can help you relax if you need a break or is something to use as white noise. In terms of study help... color coding always really helped me. I don't know if there's any science behind it, but it definitely helped me with some anxiety associated with testing.

Idiocracy is an awesome movie. It's hard to describe why because it's just sooo good in all respects. I probably like it so much because I totally agree that we're going in that direction... BRAWNDO!

Well, you are supposed to do them with a felt-tip pen, but you don't need fancy ones for artists. I tried a lot of different ones so far, and honestly, I don't see much of a difference between most brands. Where I live you can get cheap "fineliners" in every store that sells school supplies, even supermarkets. These will do fine.

I use and carry a Fischer Space Pen simply for how little space it takes up in my pocket. And, for a ballpoint, it writes pretty well and consistently. I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth out of it and have used it quite a bit. I will say to definitely buy the color/style you really want, be sure you’ll have this thing on you quite a bit if you buy one.

This is a fantastic idea! You are such a thoughtful friend. Here's a list of cheap items that I would include:
• Nice pens. I am extremely partial to Uni-Ball Jetstreams
• A set of colored markers for studying and making diagrams
• Small Moleskine notebooks that easily fit into pockets for taking notes on rounds
• Ibuprofen for headaches that happen during residency. Again something small she can carry in her purse. I would suggest 200mg and maybe in a 20 count container. She can refill it as needed with her home ibuprofen. DayQuil or NyQuil are also good.
• Hot Chocolate and Hot Tea - something she can just mix with hot water and drink
• Quick snacks for when you're too busy to eat. I like Clif Bars since they're quick and filling. Special K bars and Luna Bars are also good.
• A candle to light while studying during residency can help set the mood to get work done. Or maybe that's just for me.

Hope this gives you some ideas!!

Any notebook using Tomoe River paper, such as this one, is famous for being able to handle ink well while having super thin pages. For me, I've discovered that my Leuchtturm1917 is perfect for what I do. That being said, I don't use relatively wet inks such as fountain pens, so if you're planning to move onto those at some point, you might want to invest in something like the link above.

As for writing utensils, a good starting point would be the Staedtler pens, such as this, or if you want a bigger pack of them--this.

You might try Staedtler technical pens, or Copic Multiliner SP markers. Both are extremely fine points - the Copics can go down to .03mm, but only in black, I think.

Also. If you really want to start doing this (yay!) I recommend adding these to your wishlist as your starter pens. They are the best for cheaper fine tips, and the colors are so bright. Mix these with a variety of black pens until you find one you like the most... Personally, I am still trying out new black ones, but Pilot G3 makes for a really nice pen for a cheaper end one.

Baby and mommy, suits us just fine. She is 20 months now so really a toddler but she still has a bit of baby (and baby smell!) in her. I look at the newborn pics and I have to tell my ovaries to calm down so I guess she's a big girl now! Okay i'm babbling.

Amen OP. I'd struggled with the craft of writing until I started writing by hand.

I love the way it forces me to rewrite. As in not being able to just delete a word or two and continue on, which makes the page look messy. I stated rewriting sentences, just to change a word, and rewriting paragraphs just to change a sentence. It made it all flow so much better.

My hand writing was laughably terrible just a few years ago, but one year and almost 300,000 words later it's actually respectable - I get compliments on it all the time.

I also find it helps with writers block. If I can't figure out what to write next, or if I don't like what I wrote, but don't know how to fix it, I just go back and start rewriting, just working on copying the same words as neatly and carefully as I can. And before you know it, I'm off again.

Scrivwell Dot Matrix Notebook It's $12 (USD) and has 100gsm (aka thick) paper so that ghosting (where you see the what you've written on the other page) is minimal and bleeding (where your ink or markers soak through to the next page) is non-existent.

Steadler Triplus Fineliners Hands down the best pens I have used for my journal.

Crayola Super Tip Markers I use these instead of Tombrow Brush Pens because they are cheap and give me similar results.

Correction Tape No brand preference. It's a non liquid white-out that helps when you make mistakes, and you will make mistakes.

I do glam planning so I usually say Etsy Gift Cards since that's where I buy my stickers but since Amazon doesn't sell those (they should get on that) I found these Staedtler Pens and actually need them really badly since my gel pens don't write well on the shiny stickers I buy. I used to draw and stuff in my planners when I was little before the glam planning trend happened. It's relaxing for me to do on sundays to plan the next week and makes me want to stay organized since it's fun for me and I'm super girly and love designing!

The Staedtler Triplus Fineliner is my all time favorite. I'm all about porous point pens because they don't smear and for whatever reason make my handwriting infinitely better than any other pen. I followed a bunch of study blogs on tumblr when I was in school and all the people that had the best handwriting and cutest notes swore by these pens. I especially love how many colors they have and the convenient carry case that turns into a stand.

To be fully transparent I'll admit that we've had a few small hiccups in linework in the past, we're learning a lot in the process of digitizing some of the paper or "not print-ready" files some artists have given us, but we definitely recognize that people want quality and strive to improve.

Our paper quality, if that speaks to you, is 70# uncoated offset recycled content.

Typical office copy machine paper is usually coated (so less of a natural feel under the pencil, no "tug") and usually 22# or 24# (much thinner). Some markers bleed through though. In unscientific but well meaning testing we found that our paper resistance to heavier markers is roughly the same as the leading coloring books (a certain lady whose last name starts in Bas and ends in ford)

Notebooks, but I do use them. As well as pens/markers to go with. I love PaperMate Flair Pens as they write so smoothly and are great for long notes, but they get stolen frequently. Bic Gelocity are great all around as the grip is comfy and the ink flows amazingly, also works on skin.

The next I wanna add to my collection is the Bic BodyMark because I constantly draw on myself, and a bullet journal kit!

I really like drawing and righting with thick marker like pens. I have not had these since I stole some from my dad as a kid. I want to draw super cool thank you notes to all my new RAoR friends.

I tend to go to Barnes and Noble for bullet journals. They have some pretty ones. My preferred journal is an A5 dotted type. Amazon also has a couple good brands too I’ve tried. Here’s the specific one I’m using right now.

I get my pens from Amazon. They’re like off-brand Staedlers: 60-pack with stencils or a smaller pack for trying.

I’ve tried Copic pens and they’re good, but outrageously expensive (I think I paid close to $10 for one pen).

My preference is for Uni Pin Fineliners. Presently you can get a 6-pack of assorted sized tips (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.8) for 7 or 8 bucks US. I prefer the 0.3, 0.5, and 0.8 for what I do, but they all work very consistently.

My problem with a lot of pens that I’ve tried, is that they’re unpredictable. I need a pen that gives me the same results every time I use it—I guess that’s pretty obvious, huh? But anyway, I’ve tried a lot of different pens that friends have recommended, or that I’ve found at various art supply stores, in search of the perfect pen.

The Copics were even frustrating at times (and partly because I wanted to get my $10 out of them, and probably used them on empty for a little bit). Uni Pin Fineliners are the best I’ve tried.

Don't know if you're still in need of something, but these are great IMO. Relatively fine point, great flow because they're technically markers, 10 colors.

The set you linked isn't exclusively their sign pens (that would be something like these) but there is a sign pen in there. That particular set is meant more for experimentation. Each of them is a very different tip from the others, so it could be a good way to get a feel for what you like. I'm a fan of the Jetpens samplers for the same reason, like this one here, which spans several different brands and styles.

Man, I remember when Flairs first came out, they were being given away when I worked at McDonalds. One per customer, blue, sides were groved to make it easier to hold, we took a few home. Triplus Fineliner all day erryday. They're even finer - .3 mm. I discovered them when I was taking Japanese classes when I was in college the first time. Beautiful. I got them because they're great for writing kanji in small notebooks, but I use them all the time. And so many colors! I like to color code my notes (and pretty much everything else) so they're perfect.

Since you don't want to paint yet, I'd suggest simply doing your best with removing nub marks with some sanding sticks.

Thank you for the reference. The rough edges look to be mostly due to smaller short strokes instead of large ones, so a line-confidence problem. What helped me overcome that was learning to not going back over a line to 'fix' it after I made it, mostly by doing lots of 30-sec figure studies, since those force you to be line efficient.

What kind of pen are you using? A thicker one or a brush tip will help, since you won't need to go back over areas. Drawing larger will help too, since little line defects won't be as prominent on a larger page.

These pens are really satisfying to use, and since you color with pencil, you won't need to worry about color bleeding.

Sharpie pens are the best. I write a LOT for work, and it's so enjoyable to write with. Doesn't bleed through the paper, yet still gives a nice, confident line. Not to mention you can get one for under $1.

The old style is all metal when the cap is on. The newer one has a black plastic ring where the closed cap meets the body of the pen. Among other differences.

Hi! I'm a left-handed engineering student.

The pen I use is the Pilot Hi-tecpoint V5 Grip (link) with black ink. It's basically the Hi-tecpoint V5 but with a good grip lol. That pen was about $4-5 at my local art store at home in the pen section.

Context: I take notes in my Hilroy 200-page graph paper notebook.

That occurred to me after the fact – though maybe a chocolates/book of short stories/quality-but-not-froufrou foot creme sort of goody bag would work?

This is now my favorite pen. Works like crap when signing carbon copies, but it's smooth and lightweight. Has a similar bold writing style like the G2 pens. These pens are my personal pens, they do not get handed out.

Staedtler Triplus Fineliner are most similar to ultra fine tip sharpies without any bleed through at all. They are superb.

I personally find that I am quickest at writing with shitty old bic sticks. But I do love my red ballpoint ink, wouldn’t create an answer key without one!

As someone who wishes she could be artistic but totally isn't, I love coloring books. These pens have been my favorite for coloring so far. The time just flies by for me and it is very relaxing.

Oh OK, I like the idea of canals, that's actually really cool. Ummm, colored pencils would look really nice, but might smudge. I usually go with a set of Stabilo art markers. Either way, get something with a large range, so you can shade a lot.

This is what I use personally, although you should maybe buy a single pen or pencil to see how you like them before shelling out for anything big. Most art shops sell singles.

If you're writing this much, the good pens are worth it. I'm a medical student as well and literally everyone has something like this. Or they use some sort of ipad/surface to take notes on.

I don’t like using Flair too much (I know, teacher heresy) because the barbaric way I hold my writing utensils makes the part in the pen where the cap connects cut into my finger.

Worth a look imo. Haven't used Faber yet, had no reason to switch so far.

Oh well. Even so, it's an investment in yourself. It will never go down in value and in reality if 10 bucks a month make a serious difference (imo) one should go out and fix finances first by earning (not saving)

Depends on your personal preference. First, you need to decide if you prefer ball point or felt tip. You also need to consider if you want a wide range of colours.

I have come to love fine felt tip because the come in so many colours, as colour coding my notes helps me remember more from my studying. Staedtler Triplus Fineliners is what I use, and yes, I like them so much I bought the 36 pack. These do not smudge unless you are writing on glossy paper. However, if your page of felt pen written notes get wet, it turns into an illegible page of tie-dye.

Some people like ballpoint better because it makes for smoother pen strokes but I can't speak to best ballpoint brands as I don't use ballpoint often.

I experience the same thing, my hand cramps up and hurts if I try to ignore it. Unfortunately I don't have much advice since I haven't been able to overcome it myself. Maybe try using something different to write with, like switching types of pens or pencils to find one that is easier on your hand. So far the easiest I've found is the Sharpie brand pens.

Try a felt-tip pen, like the Papermate Flair. Or a plastic-tip pen like the Sharpie pen. Ballpoints can sometimes get clogged with paper, especially if you're left-handed.

Skip the high-lighters! Don't get them used to using them. Studies have been shown (and its mostly self evident) that high lighting things doesn't help you retain or understand the content.

A lot of people use micron pens from Sakura. They're water resistant. I bought these and like them more than the Sakura pens, though. Sharpie Fine Point Pen

I love these things. All other fine point pens I have had tend to leak or tend to create dots of ink on the paper. These have leaked a couple of times, but I could explain that by either putting too much pressure on them in my pocket or letting them get too hot.

The come in different colors as well.

There is a reason those pens are so cheap, they suck for note taking. They are great for comic books sketching but the nib is so weak that if you press too hard it ruins the pen. I found the best pens for annotating First Aid were Staedler Triplus pens

They come in way more colors, don't dry out and are very sturdy

I actually use the Stainless Steel Fine tip Sharpie pen. I got it a couple days ago and instantly couldnt believe how smooth it was. It also didnt bleed through my cheap notebook paper either at all. I dont know what they are doing to make the ink and tip this dark, smooth, and not bleed through. Now my daily pen for notes and work. Only thing is that after a full day of use, the tip has gotten less smooth feeling, but I still prefer it way over any rollerball pen ive used.

Something cheap with a fine point is all you need for drawabox. I worked with these for a year, still use them. They aren't archival but that doesn't matter for practice.

There is another one on Amazon for $4. Looks almost the same, not sure what the difference (other than price) is.

They don't pick up any of the paint off the model and any designs you draw on you just go over in ardcoat afterwards and it seals the ink.

Sooooo I just discovered this and I am contemplating buying it.

I am a sucker for stationery and I have the 10 pack and 20 pack of Staedtler pens, but I honestly use them so much that buying a 36 pack wouldn't be a waste.

However... my sister just visited the Toronto Muji store for me, and is bringing back a shitload of pens from there next week.
