I'm looking for what I can only describe as a "transparent cd player". Basically, a cd player where I can see the disc spinning while it's being played.

Here are some examples of things that are close but not quite what I'm looking for:

  • Sony CMT-EX1
  • MUJI Moma

    Requirements:

  • digital output
  • visible cd spinning
  • smallish, nice looking, cheap, pick 2

I like the look of the Sony, but it's way too big. I love the look of the MUJI, but it doesn't have a digital output. And the old B&O stuff is wayyyyy too pricey for this. I've been looking for portable CD players to hack to pieces and make into what I'm looking for, but there aren't a lot of them and that's a fairly big project, so before I head down that path I thought I would post here.

Note I'm not looking for zomg super audiophile grade gear here. Decent is better than amazing, if the total package is good. I have better equipment for playing CDs when I really want high quality :)

If there's a better sub to ask this question in, please point me in the right direction!

    Thanks!

More often than not, record players that try to become an "all in one" are pretty terrible. My personal suggestion would be to get a separate record player that is dedicated to just record playing, a separate amplifier/whatever for the rest of your needs, and feed it all through speakers.

As far as choosing a record player, it all depends on what you want to spend. These days, you can get a pretty darn good one for ~$99 (see AT-LP60). If you want better sound fidelity, the sky is the limit, but that one is pretty darn good for general use for a beginner.

For the other thing, there are like a billion options. Here is the first one I found on Amazon. It may be worth your time (depending on how much you want to spend), to find an amplifier. They often times have this type of functionality built into them, and would be something that could power speakers, as well as hook the record player into.

Speaking of speakers, they are also kind of up in the air, too. You could easily just run them through a simple set of computer speakers using a stereo to 3.5mm cable, or get a nice pair that you would need to drive from an amplifier. Up to you!

u/SnappyCrunch · 1 pointr/techsupport

4 Ohms would be the impedance of the speakers.

I want to take this time to say that a boombox with an aux-in will be cheaper and probably more reliable.

So you want to Frankenstein up a boombox. Fair enough, I've done stranger things. You have lots of options depending on how deep you want to go.

The easiest thing to do is to go down to your local thrift store, buy a used home stereo amp from the 90's, take it out of the metal case, and build another case around it and the speakers. I suggest using MDF for the case. That will be relatively cheap and easy, though a bit large, depending on what amps are available to you at your local thrift stores. Protip: mount the amp vertically to make it roughly the same form factor as an 80's boombox.

If that's too easy, you can get a car stereo or equalizer amplifier, put a Volume Control Knob in front of it, and power it with an old PC power supply.

If that's too easy, you can buy a Audio Amplifier Kit, and find some instructions somewhere on building a power supply from components :)

I am Mexican and learned English at the age of 7 i came from Mexico at that age and joined elementary. I was the only one in my class who didn’t speak English, so the teacher would always put me in a corner listening to English lessons thru a similar CD player like this she would spend some time with me making me repeat as much as I could.

During recess a Spanish speaking kid came up to me and began talking to me, we became close friends and introduced me to other friends of his, I wouldn’t really speak because i didn’t know but i would listen to them speak, for about 2 months of being in the corner and listening to my friends speak i began to understand more and more. Finally after 3 1/2 months my teacher gave me a test to see if I completely understood English. I passed it with an almost perfect score. The day after my test the teacher announced it to the whole class that I finally learned and they all clapped for me. It was a life changing moment for me.

I guess you can say if you are put in a situation where you NEED to learn no matter what, you will learn that language.

I use to get sport CD players and man I loved them. They never freaking skipped.

That was the last portable CD player I owned. It was great.

u/stevepauljobs · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I am sorry if I have priced the likes of you out of my Ipod market. How about if I send you one of these?

Would that make you happy, tiger? You should still DL Safari though, I am sure even someone such as yourself can afford it.

Edit: I'm not actually sorry, I just said that.

u/jaba1337 · 4 pointsr/nostalgia

Definitely GPX. You could get them in clear neon colors, mimicking the Apple colors... http://www.amazon.com/GPX-C3943CT-40-Second-Protection-Translucent/dp/B00004S7OB

I scraped together some allowance and odd job money and bought a sketchy brandless CD burner in a plastic sack from a computer store in that limewire/kazaa/soulseek/just after napster time period. All my friends would get me to burn CDs for them.

Right around that time these things very first started to appear, and if you had a burner and some cheap blank disks they were MUCH cheaper(and higher capacity!) than the crappy flash MP3 players or the super expensive nomad/ipod stuff.

I do remember swapping MP3s and ROMs and stuff on floppies after school though. Good times.

u/lillgreen · 2 pointsr/technology

You're all lost! Compact disc's NOT in analog audio but mp3s on a true file system was the way of 2004!

It could even show track name and artist on that screen! Capacity was only however many 700mb disc's one could afford!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/gaming

It could just be wishful thinking on my part.

There does appear to be a proprietary headphone expansion slot to the left. But, if I recall correctly, that's just for the old Sony walkman/discman headphones with music controls (play, pause, skip etc).

I don't think they make headphones with that pin anymore, though.

Edit: added best picture I could find of that headphone jack...

u/diabetic_debate · 3 pointsr/cars

Simplest solution without replacing the head unit would be to use a USB powered CD player like this and a either an AUX cable or Bluetooth/FM transmitter to pass audio to the car.

If your car arm rest has a usb port, you can keep the whole thing out of the way in the arm rest.

u/scoobdrew · 1 pointr/StarWars

It's a radio that you mount
under the cabinets. My wife loves it.

u/opus-thirteen · 2 pointsr/gadgets

You make it sound like those are exclusive things (not that a waterproofing failure will be honored by any manufacturers warranty).

Devices with headphone jacks have been waterproofed for years --from ipods to walkmen, to cd players. All those have headphone jacks and work as expected.

u/reddog093 · 2 pointsr/gaming

I still remember being amazed at my Philips MP3 CD+RW player with SKIP PROTECTION!

u/thejustducky1 · 0 pointsr/ofcoursethatsathing

Revolution speed is not an issue other than screwing with the hologram's animation. If the hologram was on the top surface, like a label as I said before, there are plenty of players that you can see the label through... This one even displays the disc. It just depends on what you're looking for.

I'm not saying it's efficient or effective or a good idea... but you said can't, not shouldn't.

u/Pattmost20 · 2 pointsr/shittykickstarters

I owned a portable CD player in the early 2000s that came with those subwoofer headphones. It was actually kind of neat, mainly it just vibrated your neck on heavy bass notes. I believe it only worked with that particular cd-player, as it had a special headphone jack.

Edit: Found them online

u/newsagg · 6 pointsr/nostalgia

MP3 players were already out at the time. Most people didn't know about them yet though.

8 minutes anti-skip. You could take the cd out if you were careful and it would keep playing. I used it so much it failed, then I got a cheaper model a few years later and it failed after about a week. iPod came out soon and I got $400 one for free by doing one of those things where you get your friends to sign up for trials.

Fucking dropped it at a temp job and it destroyed the mini HD inside, so I exchanged it, returned it for store cash at Circut City and god a sweet Klipsch audio system for my PC instead.

u/fromagazebo · 10 pointsr/milliondollarextreme

I went to high school with this borderline retarded Italian kid named Chris who waddled like a duck and physically resembled a garden gnome. Chris had profound rage issues so to cool down he would pace around the cafeteria while listening to 50 Cents "Get Rich or Die Tryin" https://www.amazon.com/Sony-D-FS601-Sports-Walkman-Portable/dp/B00006HGY8 . Get this...The guy had such bulbous sausage fingers he couldn't even operate a Bic lighter, his friend Cam (Would later lead on the 6 o'clock news for committing a hate crime) would have to light his menthols for him.

This post reminded me of him because we had a set of brother/sister twins in one of our classes. They walked in 15 minutes late one morning and as they took their seats Chris yelled, " I SMELL INCEST" at the top of his lungs at them, this was his attempt at a funny joke. I'd like to emphasize this doesn't have anything to do with Robbie/Abby Martin, quite frankly It's a terrible accusation to make and says more about the accuser than anyone else.

Please donate crypto coins to the Martin's as they ARE NOT incestuous Russian spies.

u/X019 · 3 pointsr/GoForGold

Looks like that takes aux(3.5mm) , SD card and 1/4 inch, so you've got options.

Here's a CD player

u/u1053703 · 1 pointr/islam

There are lots of mp3 players that use AAA or AA batteries but finding one that does not have recording capabilities is going to be very, very difficult.

This very old-school mp3 player would fit the bill, but whether it would be acceptable to the chaplain or the recipient is another question.

u/SirMaster · 1 pointr/iphone

I must have had a fancy CD player then cause the skip protection never needed a pause. It would read the disc faster than the play and keep a 45 second buffer.

I remember I could slightly open the cd tray and stop the cd with my finger and it would continue playing for 45 seconds and as long as I let it start spinning again before that time was up it would never stop playing at all.

Was this one: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-AX5015-Personal-45-Second-Anti-Skip/dp/B00005AUU6

u/bananatheswitch · 3 pointsr/GoForGold

Any CD player with a headphone jack will do, you will need a aux cord as well.

Edit: this will do

u/sharkamino · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

You have room for a 17" wide Marantz NR 1508 but not enough room for a 17" wide CD/DVD player?

I see plenty of 17" wide DVD or CD players at thrift shops for $10.

New, narrower:

I got this one on amazon for the Korean listening test

I picked up this bad boy for, I think, $149 in 2001. Now I could buy a used one for only $68! What a world we live in.
