The Grundig G8 Traveler is good, as well are many other older, tried-and-true Grundig models.

Almost anything from Crane is good. I bought one of these as a gift (actually got a lightly-used one through universal-radio.com), and it has reception like you wouldn't believe. FM was perfect, and the AM reception was so good, you wouldn't mind listening to AM music.

Sangean also makes some famous pocketable models.

Oh, and always try and read reviews on radio enthusiast blogs. Check out the comments here for some very useful commentary on pocketable radios.

edit: Here's a nice review of the Sangean DT-400W. I'd go either with it or the DT-200VX if you're looking for something that's pocketable.

Yes, I have, but would that be the best option? I'd rather have something that looks halfway decent on my shelf, and most portable radios probably don't.

Honestly, I'm fine with just switching out the cable. I don't need a radio so often to where I would need the convenience of a switch. It's a cool idea, though, and one I might capitalize on later.

The Sony ICF-S10MK2 pocket radio. It's a cheap $10 Sony radio, but I've been so impressed with it that several of my friends have purchased it. It's loud enough to listen while showering. The battery life has been amazing. Two AA batteries will last a few months of daily use.

The tried and true Sony Walkman.

I did you one better and found the "weather radio" version. If there's a tornado or earthquake or something else, you can automatically turn into the National Weather Service frequencies and listen to updates for your area. Emergency news is usually broadcast on AM radio as well, so this particular Walkman has you covered. Best of all, it runs on a single battery, so you can listen for a long time on a pack.

Funny thing is the hiss on WLW is caused by the HD signal. The digital stream is too big to fit in the 10khz spectrum that an AM station has, and you can observe this by tuning in 690 and 710, and the loud hiss you hear on those frequencies are the HD sidebands. Some of it bleeds onto the 700 frequency, which is why there's a hiss there. Go tune in to 550, 1360 or 1530, if you're close enough to the transmitters you'll hear the noise floor is lower on those stations than on WLW, because they don't broadcast in HD. The HD signal is so intrusive that the analog WLW stream is confined to only 5khz, which is why their sound quality is worse than almost all the AM stations in Cincinnati. It's a funny thing that if they took the digital signal that's supposed to sound great (I find it tinny and full of compression artifacts) off the air and opened up the analog signal back to 10khz, WLW would sound fantastic, and with no background hiss.

If you're looking for a good AM radio, try the Sangean PR-D5, I have one and I was able to pick up several Chicago AM stations standing in my driveway in the middle of the day. It is a beast.

I wanted a radio for my walks. It needed a belt clip, great reception, good build and easy to change stations. What I found isn't retro, but it's a great little radio. Cheap, too.

Portable radio is such a mature product and technology I think you'll be fine as long as you choose a decent brand. I've seen battered, paint and dust covered 30-year old Sony radios still keeping tradesmen entertained on building sites. Models that looked similar to this one for around $89. I would even hazard a guess that you could go cheaper:

I would say sticking to manual dial and buttons is also going to help with durability and reliability as opposed to a LED/LCD screen with station-seeking features.

Honestly this is the best cheapest highest rated radio. You can't go wrong with this. It's great to listen to games, have around the house, in case of storms etc.

just dance to radio 1 and make shit for 9 hours a day, really does make the day go way faster, had to use some non-radio ear defenders while i was waiting for them and i'll tell you what, these make it go from a 9 hour day to a seamless 4 hour day i swear.

theres no bluetooth, but you do get a wire that you can connect to your phone which isn't ideal but it does the job and since its anologue, its a bit finicky to get the radio station you want but if you listen to one and stay on one they're fantastic, now if you're one of these annoying-indecisive people that change the radio every 5 minutes, then you might want to get something else. really comfortable to, barely realise i'm wearing them.

i can't tell much difference between the both on the web but i can stand by these ones, the others have loads of good ratings though so i don't think you can go wrong with those.

You can save money and space with a portable Sony radio. Amazing reviews, $12 and runs off of AA batteries for 40 hours or more. Buy 3 and have one at home, at work and one in the car.

Saturday I will continue my yearly ritual: Put a new battery in my radio (its a great radio, one battery per year), help make dinner and then listen as I eat. That's how we roll in Tulsa. I spend most of Saturday night reading game recaps and looking at /r/CFB.

Beer is used for home games. Before, during and after.

Whenever I am at the park, I bring This with me. My gf also has one, its cheap and very good. Only problem with the AtBat app is how delayed the plays are. With the radio I can hear KNBR on every play. Its great.

Unsolicited advice: buy sound reducing earmuffs- they're designed to muffle sound. Then if you want to listen to music get music capable earmuffs or stick any $10 pair of earbuds underneath.

I have tried fancy noise-cancelling headphones, but contrary to what you think they're not designed to make things quiet. They're designed to mitigate any errant sound to make what you're listening to sound better. So if there's a small sound or a quiet conversation, it can reduce that. But if it's loud, they won't work. Get something designed to mitigate loud sounds.

My work gave me some hearing protection, and that's what I use (with cheap earbuds underneath) while mowing the lawn and I haven't looked back.

These seem to have much better reviews, even a couple from motorcycle riders. They aren't bluetooth, but I think using 2-way radios would be better in the long run because you don't want to run down your cell phone battery the whole time you're riding.

This one is pretty good, we had one for our team. Not sure what your price range is. If you charge it the night before the battery should last you a whole day, and the bars that surround it protect it a little from taking a beating.

Your phone might have an FM tuner. If not check this one out. Looks like it belongs to museum, but works good according to the reviews.

I prefer the Sangean DT-180 AM/FM radio. I go to 30+ games a year. Listened to the game on the DT-180 at each one since the beginning of the 2014 season. Works beautifully. Instantaneous play-by-play. It's difficult to enjoy a game the same way without it.

Some tips using it:

• make sure to use the "lock switch" feature on the back of the radio to prevent accidentally button pressing in your pocket.
  
  
• the DT-180 has an automatic turn-off after 90 mins. It will happen at least once in a normal game. No need to worry. Just turn it back on.
  
  
• take batteries out if you know it will be a while before your next game (otherwise you'll get corrosion in the terminals). Place used batteries in small ziplock with a "used" post-it in it. If you end up with corrosion, you can easily clean it with a Qtip dabbed in vinegar.

I've had the Sony SRF-59 pocket radio for years and years and I love it. Single AA battery lasts forever.

I use a Kaito KA200 radio when I'm outside but I mostly use a Sony ICF-S10MK2 at home. The Mets broadcast only through AM radio but in 2013-14, they were broadcast on WFAN's FM simulcast which made the broadcast very clear with less static than AM radio.

I even take a little radio to the games with me to listen to Vin.

Why so much focus on FM radio?

I don't think anything decent since the Zune and Cowon that's had an FM radio built in. Why not just buy another Cowon? They are still available NIB on eBay, and batteries are available all over the place.

Otherwise, just buy something like this and use whatever other PMP you want.

You could, um, get a radio. They are pretty cheap these days. Or for fancy-pants listening, there's some FM earbuds that have a companion iPhone app for choosing the station.

i find even with MLB subscription, the wifi in the SkyDome is too spotty to use for streaming and why use the data when you can just pick up a small portable radio

listening to the actual AM broadcast has no delay whatsoever.. and if you are far in the outfield, you can hear the crack of the bat on the radio before you hear it in the park - its pretty neat

Funny thing about that: When hurricane Sandy hit, I tuned in to the local FM radio station (which I usually don't listen to because it's a lot old guys waxing ignorant about politics, and repetitive music).

The first thing I heard when I switched on the radio? "Well, if you're tuning in to us to find out what's going on... we don't know either. Our internet is down, our cable TV is down, and our phones are down. And that's all of the ways we get our information."

So, it was pretty useless.

Also, a cheap battery powered AM/FM radio or even a crank-powered model, is going to be a lot more efficient and reliable in an emergency than a smartphone sucking down battery searching for a cell signal, that also happens to have an FM receiver in it.

Most sets with integrated radios are like this and are probably not good for exercise. Something in the Sony SRF line (SRFH4, SRFHM33, etc) would work if you can find it

At Dependable they have you tune into a radio station. Often times the sheer amount of other people playing the station means you can sit outside of your car and still hear fine. The last few times I went I put an air mattress in the bed of my truck and used a personal battery powered radio to tune into the FM station.
