I understand how people want all the doohickies and features. But my two requirements were storage and drag and drop.

I like being able to plug something into any computer, and transfer tunes without faffing around. At the time, the creative MP3 player let me do that. Plug it into the home PC, laptop, steal all my friends tunes, no problems.

Honestly, even the Minidisc was the same. Plug it in via USB, drag into window and it wrote to the minidisc. Fucking love that thing, messing around with discs in my pocket.

Look at how cute he is!

Little fucker got me through many nightshifts at work.

My best find at a Walmart was a Sony Minidisc player/recorder for $120, in 2014. Sure, it's cheaper than the $250 you'd pay for it in 2001, but it didn't even come with a recordable disk and there was no way to source the media.

>CD players. With skip protection if you were a rich mofo

I had this bitch in 2001 and it never skipped. It also did NOT cost anywhere near even half what they're apparently going for used on amazon. I should have kept it.

Hell yeah. I took mine snowboarding for like 5 years in a row.
Towards the end it got to be a pain in the ass though, because, as Sony tends to do, the platform was locked down..when they stopped making the software to transfer music readily available, it took a lot of time to dig it up.
I held out til iPods got to 160gb and could hold double my music collection (not that my collection has grown much since then thanks to streaming services). I always felt Sony could have gotten a few more years out of the technology if they'd made higher capacity discs and allowed 3rd parties to make transfer/management software, but iPods kept growing and mini discs stayed around 40-50 songs.

We can do that all day—hey look, a Minidisc changer for $800, a Nintendo 64 for $1,678, etc. It's collection items at this point, it says absolutely nothing about the "practical" value/capabilities of said devices.

It's not all that complicated: your assumption that it was a current model was wrong, hence the confusion.
