For taller bars, it looks like your year has regular clip-ons, so you should be able to use any bars that are the diameter of your forks. I did a 4500 mile/10 day trip on my 2014 and never had any wrist issues, just a sore butt.

This is the tank bag I use and I have no complaints. I just keep jamming more stuff in it and it seems like there's always room for one more thing. If you're worried about keeping your tank paint in good condition, wax it before you leave, then make sure you don't have any dirt/debris on the bike or the bag when you put it on. It stays planted pretty well on my 2014 VFR, but on my CBR250R it slides around a lot because of the narrow tank, the magnets don't hold very well. I'm guessing your bike has a bigger tank, so a flatter top surface, so it shouldn't be an issue. Just keep it clean and don't slide it around, lift it up if you want to re-position.

RAM mounts are probably the most popular for mounting the phone on the bars, or else you can put your phone in the tank bag. To charge your phone, you can buy one of these, it plugs into the SAE lead from your batter tender pigtail, and converts it to a USB-C port. From there, just plug in a USB-C -to-your-phone's-port cable.

In-helmet bluetooth - Sena 20S or Cardo Packtalk are top of the line, like $250 but they have the best features and they're pretty much guaranteed to work and have good battery life. This is a cheaper option that will likely work nearly as well as the premium brands. I haven't used any of the above, so I can't attest to their quality, but I've heard the latter is worth the savings, although if you're not worried about money, the Sena is the better option.

Rain gear - I wear these pants and this jacket. They're 3 season, warm weather, with a removable waterproof liner. With the liner in, it's comfortable wearing just a T-shirt underneath in the upper 60s. Upper 70s I'll generally take the liner out. Lower temperatures, I wear a long underwear/thermal base layer that's like $10 Fruit of the Loom stuff that works pretty well. The biggest issue with this stuff is that because it's made for warmer weather, it's breathable, which doesn't work out well in cold weather. Given your schedule, this stuff would be fine for the weather. Another option for rain gear is to just have a cheap one piece plastic oversuit/rain coat type thing. Basically a big plastic bag.

For bike security, if you're worried about it, get a chain and hook up to a post. Also, get a cover for the bike. Someone might see a bike and think it's worth stealing, but if they see a blob, they're probably not going to walk over and lift up the cover to see what's under it. If you really want to be sneaky, throw some mud on the cover and put duct tape patches on it to make it look ratty.

Helpful apps - Google Maps/Apple Maps, and a way to listen to music if you're going to be on the freeway a lot.

Miscellaneous:

• Something to secure loose parts on your bike if something breaks, whether you prefer zip ties, bailing wire, rope, paracord, velcro, whatever you want, just have something that you can strap stuff down with. I have about a dozen 12" zip ties and a $7 roll of velcro that's like 35 feet long.
  
  
• Tire puncture kit, probably also a tire pressure gauge
  
  
• Waterproof luggage. My personal experience says that hard shell luggage is more convenient for accessing during the day, and a waterproof soft shell bag is good for your stuff you won't need unless you're stopped for the night - clothes, toiletries, maybe a laptop, charging cables, etc.
  
  
• Kickstand pad for that one time you park in the grass and realize your kickstand is sinking in from a 500lb bike leaning on it. You can just use a piece of wood or something for this obviously, it's just nice to have something ready for it so you're not awkwardly standing there with your bike waiting for someone to grab you a rock or chunk of asphalt.
  
  
• Written directions, major road names. Electronics these days are pretty much foolproof, but once in a blue moon, you might find yourself somewhere you don't have GPS service or a data connection for your phone. You'll be hundreds of miles from anywhere you know, it's good to have a fallback plan, and it only takes a few minutes.
  
  
• Make sure you can confidently put the bike on the centerstand. You might not be able to do it with luggage, that's fine, but you should be able to do it with the bike unladen. This makes roadside maintenance or hotel parking lot chain tensioning/lubing way easier.
  
  
• Something to write with and write on. I keep a little notebook and pen in my tank bag.
  
  
• Emergency cash, even if you plan on paying for everything with a credit/debit card

• Let your bank or credit card company know what states you'll be in, so your card doesn't get denied for suspected fraud when you need an emergency tow

  Be prepared for every type of weather that can happen in the regions you'll be passing through, even if it normally doesn't happen there in the time of year. I got snowed on in Texas after leaving Wisconsin, of all places, in late April. Have a plan in case your bike breaks down, or your tire blows, or you chain breaks, or anything goes wrong. A lot of people also recommend hydration systems, e.g. Camelbak backpacks with a straw that goes into your helmet. On my road trip, I was basically subsisting on beef jerky, trail mix, and powerade when I stopped for gas. If you're making a more leisurely trip, there's no reason not to eat real food.

Yeah, I am using an S5 as a dedicated bike computer for years now - following chats, listening to music, recording rides via Strava, navigation via OsmAnd app and even using the same phone to control a drone, though I haven't tried that during a ride yet, lol.

The issue with S4 is that it is NOT water/dust resistant. If you don't care and only going to be riding fair-weather, then sure - why not. It's right there, after all. I wouldn't, but I'm sure it would be fine if you are careful.

Yep. I am riding all-weather, which includes storms, blizzards and everything in between. The phone holds up fine, though I don't use it on handlebars when it gets to -10C and below.

Yeah, ghost inputs everywhere. You gotta keep the screen off in rain, unless you figure out a way to turn the digitizer off while leaving the display on. There's probably an app for that, especially for an S5. It's probably the most popular phone in regards to custom stuff developed for it.

Another way would be to cover the screen in one way or another, so it is not in contact with conductive water. I don't, so can't advice on best options there.

Indeed. It's basically a full-fledged computer with what it can do. Hell, I've even live-streamed my rides on occasion, while on VoIP with friends. See which dedicated bike "computer" can do that, ha!

I recommend this phone holder. Serves me well - got two for separate bikes at this point. My review is here. The second one I got is a bit more loose than I'd like (hard bumps shift the phone angle sometimes), but it hasn't been happening annoyingly often thus far, so I'd still say it's a great product, especially for the price.

Awesome thanks! Yeah waterproofing is just a bonus at this point, but threw it out there in case there is something I didn't find in research. Some reviews have me a bit worried, but so far this looks like the best (and affordable) option for a case just for biking.

I am glad I came across the Quad lock, I was originally considering something like: https://amzn.com/B013MDDEDG but based on how it looks, I am not 100% sure about just how secure it is. The quad lock looks very secure. I also like how I can get a mount for driving too, that is more slim profile than what I currently use (I don't have my own car, I use Zipcar. I would like to keep a car phone holder in my bag so I don't have to worry about going home/remembering to grab it but it's pretty long and takes up a lot of space).

please STOP perpetuating that stupid myth about smartphones not being able to route or do tracks when you are out of cell coverage. Iphones and Androids can download maps ahead of time (just like with your stand alone GPS) which allow you to continue to use it when you are well OUTSIDE of cell coverage. I have used my cell phone as a GPS for on and off road for over 3 yrs now without fail (and I didn't spend an extra $600 to do it). Even a decent Garmin GPS will set you back at least $400 (I don't count the 60, 62, 76 and variants because their screens are too damn small to be effective). I also stream music to my Sena SMH10r . There are a plethura of sites that help you to easily set this up. For mostly road use, I recommend a cheap GPS or use your smartphone but if you do moderate off road, I would recommend something with a hardier plug which is what tends to be the problem (I don't mind so much since it's actually a rather easy fix on my Galaxy S4 were it to be damaged).

Tents.... do not buy too cheap on this. I have tried a lot of tents and finally settled on the Ledge Sports Recluse here . It is a three man but really just comfortable enough for two mostly, roomy with a loft and packs really small with poles that are less than a foot long collapsed (easy to fit in panniers and bags).

Personally I would make sure you find something really comfortable to sleep on. I use a blow up mattress and a pump that plugs that goes into my motorcycle to fill it up. Most the pads you see are overpriced/expensive and crap on your back or for side sleepers. If you get a hole that you can't fix, how hard is to find a WalMart or a Target to buy a new one for around 20 to 50 bucks depending on the size you want. I prefer a queen size, great for added weight and so damn comfortable. If my old Coleman Quickbed ever dies, I will be picking up the Coleman Durarest here.

I take my phone, my Nexus 7 with 4G and my small laptop with me everywhere. I have a USB Stick chock full of reading material, music and movies....never get bored and when I want to relax and gaze at the stars, only a power button stands in my way.

Phones can get you into trouble. My buddy called me one night when I was out, this was real late, like around 11 pm. He made a joke about having a soundboard that does bear, wolf or cougar sounds and walking around outside scaring people. I checked the net and found some bear sounds that I downloaded and we joked about it. I went to sleep later after having a number of beers and when I woke up around 2 am to go relieve myself, I carried my phone with me to use as a flashlight. When I was coming back, I passed near this tent of these lesbians and played some Bear sounds. I could hear them freaking a bit and I quickly scammered back into my tent. About half an hour later, a ranger comes by my tent and asks if I have heard any noises. I tell him "you mean...You waking me up". You might ask how I know they were Lesbians and what that has to do with anything but that involves more to tell that I couldn't sum up in a few paragraphs. Suffice is to say that when I am camping, I avoid children, young couples and now, Lesbians.

If you are talking s1, this bag large size fits. I got a bell, designed well, small size fits. Phone mount. I'm getting these gravity wheelnutz for the front wheel (M10). I'm getting these water bottle holders, which seem cheap so can't vouch for them, but needed two and didn't yet put in a longer screw through the fender so I lost the universal mount. Highly recommend the suspension. And honestly, my favorite thing is very specifically for my dog. But, I had to take off the front light on my bike so that she could surf on this basket (there is a strap to connect to a harness so they are protected) tail wagged the whole trail. I too am getting the extended seats, because tall, so the rear just holds a bike lock for now. Should take a break after spending all that money, but going on a bike trip next week for vacation, so far, all super worth it. There are great accessory videos on youtube, the community there is small but wonderful.

Want to catch pokemon and not die of the heat? Easy! Get on the lightrail. (Or in Tempe get on a free Orbit shuttle)
It's great for hacking Pokestops and for encountering pokemon in the wild but you won't be able to do gym battles unless you get off the lightrail but that's ok. You want to level up and get some good pokemon for the gym first anyways. You will want to use the gym later though. It's the only way to earn coins in game by "defending" gyms. You can also strengthen a teammates gym by leaving pokemon at it too. C ordinate with your nearby friends and choose the same color if you'll be traveling together or playing in the same area alot.

The higher your level the better Pokemon you will see.

Oh and don't start upgrading your low end pokemon yet. It wastes stardust. As you gain levels you find ones that are maxed out or almost maxed out. Just sell or "transfer" you lowest CP duplicates to get candies for that pokemon.

If you're gonna spend money on the game start with buying a few egg incubators. You only start with one.

You will most likely need an external battery pack as the game sucks up more juice than ingress did by far. There is a battery saver box in the options and you can turn the camera mode off which helps some but still sucks down the juice like crazy.

The great thing about this is that it can change with your helmet, it also provides a great intercom system (that I've found quite a few folks with), and integrates really well with your smartphone (though, better with iPhone than Android much to my chagrin).

I have a Bell Star Carbon helmet and it comes with pre-cut spaces in the liner to accommodate a speaker setup such as this. There are others I'm sure in a more affordable price range that will do the same depending on what your budget is.

Frankly the Bilt helmets are not all that great on the quality scale. I've had an HJC, Shoei, and now a Bilt full-face w/ bluetooth that I got from a similar sale as yours. By all means, they do the job, and for a bluetooth-integrated helmet it's a great price, but they're definitely cheap. However, I've had mine for about 4 months now with no issues. The way I see it, you can keep on trading until you get a Bilt helmet that works (they do exist), or you can look at alternatives. On cycle gear's website it does look like they still sell HJC, although I haven't seen any in my local store for a good while. HJC helmets are about the same price as your Bilt and from my experience more comfortable and less noisy, but you would have to get a separate bluetooth unit. I use helmet speakers and SureFire EP4 earplugs. Can't wear headphones in both ears in CA, so I opted for speakers.

Sound quality is pretty good, but obviously not as good as headphones. I'm satisfied with it though, it allows me to hear everything around me as long as the plugs are out.

Really great. The clamp is adjustable, comes with two silicone webs (US version comes with 3, count 'em, 3!), allows tilting and swivelling if you want to enable battery saver. Good price too.

I feel like cycling is the way to go. Quick travel between pokestops and gyms (I took 3 this evening!) , because you're on cycle paths or pavement it's much safer to stop, you don't need to look at the phone at all because the sound tells you when pokemon appear, plus it's great exercise! (My app says I burnt over 500 calories today.)

I have a nexus 6p now and it works perfect for it and before I had a nexus 6 which was even bigger and still held up. I love it and its only $10. Have done 50+ mi rides on super rough trails with it and never had problems. You just have to make sure you use the rubber webbing on the 4 corners and the phones not coming off (learned that one the hard way lol)

I think you are a lucky man that your wife wants to ride with you, it’s not as prevalent, at least in my opinion. Enjoy your time, I recommend you get a headset intercom so you can talk and point things out to each other all the time and that she can tell you when she needs a break. We use the Sena 10 series. There are less expensive options, but these are very well made, battery’s life is excellent and well, recommended.

i recently got this vibrelli mount. it fits my iphone 5s in an otterbox case. if i were starting from scratch, i'd probably have gone with the quadlock, but already having a case, this has worked well for me so far and seems to hold the phone pretty securely. (you can double up on the elastic bands for extra security, which seems like overkill on the road but i probably will do it next time i ride some trails). i can't speak for durability since i've only had it a week. if anything on it broke, i'd think it would be the bands, which you get three of.

eta: i got my mount mostly for maps. for music, another option would be a bluetooth speaker, which would also give you better sound quality. you can keep the phone in a pocket or saddle bag. i don't have one, but have been eyeing one that fits in a water-bottle holder.

After doing some errands on the scooter today, two things I've realized: riding for a while really takes a toll on your legs, mostly calves and your hands really cramp up after a while (3+ hours). When I had the accident, I was going 20mph and while I was riding today, I realized why I fell. The speed never went down because with the Emove cruiser, if you hold the throttle for a while, it automatically activates cruise control. I figured out you can just turn it off by pressing the throttle twice but still, better late than never. Also I got a little too confident and went to the second mode instead of just staying on the first. I rode today strictly on the first mode and everything went smoothly. My only complaint is how stupid hot it gets where I live and I was drenched in sweat by the end of the day

You're right, Sena is really pricey and this has kept me from owning one. I really only want to listen to music on long rides. I have no one I ride with regularly, so I don't need bike-to-bike comms, and I never make or receive a call on the move.

What sort of battery life do you need? Last summer I briefly owned one of the Chinese Sena-knockoff headsets, sold on Amazon by a few different vendors for just under $50, all with a black-and-orange color scheme (for example: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Motorcycle-Communication-Headphone-Interphone/dp/B01FRY1GC4/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1519148049&sr=8-11&keywords=motorcycle+bluetooth+headset)

The reason I sent it back was that it just did not have a useful battery life for my purpose, which was road trips. 2-3 hours tops. So I could listen to music for a small part of a day's riding, then it had to charge the rest of the day (~4 hour charge time, ugh).

Battery life is the largest distinction between these cheap-o BT headsets and the expensive ones.

I didn't own the knockoff headset long enough to assess waterproofness, but I did make a phone call on it once just to try it out. It worked fine for that. Was using a Nexus 5X phone at the time.

The headset did not however pair with my friend's Sena 20s, despite being advertised as so-capable.

Installation in my Shoei GT Air was a breeze. Even easier if you leave off the microphone, since you don't need to talk to anyone.

I bought the 10-11 a while ago, so maybe I can help out a bit. I've got an AFX Modular so I went with the 10-11 since it had the stick-on mic and the boom mic included. Installation was a snap, sound quality is good enough to listen to music, and is very clearly listenable at speed (I've had it up to about 80 or so, no issues.) Haven't had any issues with rain in the storms we've had in my area recently. When I have my visor closed, people can't tell I'm on the bike at all (even up to highway + speeds). If you've got any more questions, I'd be happy to help out!

Helmet Audio - where are all the options?

I've been snowboarding for 25 years, but finally picked up a helmet this year now that we're introducing our young kids to snowboarding. So after getting my helmet I started looking to see what was available for wireless (bluetooth) setups. I was expecting more options than what's out there.

The Outdoor Tech Chips 2.0 seem to be exactly what I'd like, but are more expensive than I expected. Other companies seem to just re-brand this item. There are a few wired options out there that then use a bluetooth adapter. What is everyone using? Sticking it out with Earbuds? I was hoping for an open ear setup so that I can hear those around me, but still have some tunes.

I own a Sena SMH10 and couldn't be happier. Works great with the iPhone for music and phone calls (not that I'd recommend being on the phone on a bike) ... I can even use the iPhone 4's voice control to control the music, can't wait to get Siri. The intercom function is excellent if you have a two. I did a lot of research before going with Sena, and these things are top notch.

This disk lock/alarm thingy I got off Amazon is pretty cheap and awesome, if you’re looking to up your lock game.

It’s designed for motorcycles, but I lock it to my bike sometimes when I’m downtown, and it’s great. It’s loud enough to make ears bleed, and won’t let the wheels turn to ride it away, even if they could stand the sound.

You can pick up a low-end but nice SENA for under a hundred that works great.

I believe your phone is IP68 rated so you don't really need a waterproof case/holder for it.

Useful helmet to helmet communications systems are going to blow your budget. The only thing I can recommend would be the Sena SMH5. You can get them within your price range, and would be a great addition to their riding with the possibility to upgrade later (newer Sena units are still compatible with the older units).

There are several versions of the SMH5, so it's important to get the right one. The link I provided above has two communicators with decent speakers and a locking connector.

SMH5 was pretty affordable for me, like $100 and I get decent sound, hands free talking and people can never tell I'm even riding.

Link for people who think they know better

1- The Sprint is an awesome bike, has a plenty of power, around 120 hp I think. Too much? As long as you're aware of the power behind the flick of your wrist, then no.

2- Older cruisers that were popular are usually easy to find parts for because there are many broken down ones that people part out and many good running ones that you could still buy for yourself. I just sold my 85 CB650 and I had no issues finding parts for it on ebay.

3- never used any bluetooth comms but if I had to recommend one I would go with a Sena:

I recommend Roam's offering. I have a G5 Plus too and it's a really good fit with the largest strap.

This one fits almost every phone and mounts super easy. I personally own one and my wife rides with her phone in there all the time. It's solid and you can probably slide a battery pack in under the rubber part.

I ordered something similar. The reviews were pretty good and it was only $22 shipped. I actually only need the USB charger as of right now, but may want a power outlet at some point in the future. Hopefully this will hold up!

I returned the TaoTronics and the Roam handlebar mounts. I did like how the TaoTronics model had a more secure cradling mechanism, but I didn't feel confident that either of them would last more than a couple months. I also took a look at the Cycway mount, which looks pretty solid. I might give that one a try soon.

EDIT: And about the groups, that's precisely the kind I'm trying to avoid. There's a time and place for a wheelie but a group ride/ middle of busy street is not it. I'm looking for people to ride the twisties with, get out of the city to enjoy the summer while there's a little left!

A lot of people use RAM mounts, but I went out and purchased a Roam Mount. Unbelievably reliable, incredibly durable, absolutely sturdy and pretty inexpensive at $16. I've had it for about 4-5 years on a naked bike, which has no fairings (obviously since it's a naked bike) or windscreen. Wether you're cruising at 45 or 85, you'll feel confident in the product. I've rode as fast (and slow) as the next man and have had absolutely zero issues with it becoming loose or anything.

Edit: I've used the Roam mount with an iPhone as well as the larger Galaxy Note 9, so phone size doesn't matter. It'll fit!

No complaints, works very well. The same company makes several models, including the cheaper SMH3 model, but I didn't care for the boom mic on it because I use a full-face helmet.

In what capacity? Are you using it to listen to music, or talk on the phone? Can you give some more details of your experience with it? What helmet are you using it in? How easy was it to install? Seems good so far. Holds my HTC M8 with an Ottorbox case on it. Has the cheapish lil spring loaded clamps for the sides and then uses the silicon pull-over the corner thing to hold it in place.

This SENA is the one I have and works like a charm. It's just under $100 so it is affordable in comparison to the other SENA and other brand headsets.

Majority of my rides are commutes or just solo rides since I can rarely find time with others.

It works great. I have tried several others - this was one that you can get tight enough the phone won't move around even when riding on mountain bike trails. It gets used several times a week, and still functions like new. It came with a couple of extra bands, but I've never had to replace that part.

Someone else mentioned quad lock, I don't think those were around when I bought this one, otherwise I may have considered it. This is much cheaper, but I see the quad lock also has rain protection which is a big plus.

The light on the battery pack was better than the light on my bike so I replaced it.

On my motorcycle I keep a brake disc lock alarm, it's a pretty good deterrent, If it gets moved it lets out a warning chirp, then if it gets touched again a blaring 110Db alarm goes off, it would no doubt startle the dude, and alert you to someone messing with it. They're super cheap and worth every penny. Even if it doesn't fit on your brake discs you could easily attach it to the spokes if you had to.

I enjoy it because you can tighten it down and then pull on it and say "nope, that ain't going anywhere". It is like a mini version of transporting the bike on a hitch mount.

The Sena SMH 10 is what I got for that purpose, along with some reusable earplugs from Harbor Freight. It is waterproof at least on the outside part, so you can leave it on the helmet. The call quality was surprisingly good because it has a noise cancelling mic, and the sound quality of the music was really good when you use earplugs (it sounded okay without it because the bass was missing). I used it for a year and a half with no issues.

Don't mess with your hearing. With your current setup, it will go fast. You may also end up with Tinnitus. In the least it can be annoying, at its worst, unbearable. Always wear earplugs. Don't fall for the gimmicky re-usable earplugs that can be extremely expensive. Just buy a jug of the squishy foam earplugs that are pennies each. This video has a good breakdown. If you want to listen to music, get a helmet speaker system. This one is plenty cheap, and works well. Phone calling also works great, both ways.

These things are amazing. I used to do the earbud under helmet thing. But when I finally treated myself to one of these... I'm never going back.

There are cheaper brands, and more expensive ones with more features, so shop around, but upgrading to one of these will change your world.

Hey all! I have a few questions about helmet speakers for music. I have horrible tinnitus and bought that huge bulk thing of foam earpro to wear which helps immensely. But at the same time, I can't wear ear buds. I've tried some of those earpro ear buds but they neither provide enough sound deadening or is loud enough. I've seen some other threads talk about how they can wear earpro and still hear music through their comm systems. I don't need anything fancy, but I need something loud enough to hear through the foam. I don't mind plugging my phone into it, or if it has any sort of comm function. Amazon has the regular smh10 with the interchangeable mics for around 250. I had the R but the external battery annoyed me and the unit itself is hard to use with gloves. The smh10's jog wheel is waaay better imo.

Some people use bike mounts for their phones. It's similar to one you would attach to your dashboard on your car, except it goes in the middle of your handlebars on your bike. Here's an example.

I would be careful if you use one while biking on bumpy terrain though, they can spit your phone right out if you shake 'em around too much.

Or just get one of these which allows phone calls, phone control, song skipping by voice or even touch by the physical wheel on the helmet peice, always on mode for other units between riders ECT. No need to buy a phone to get an app for song skipping ;)

You could always get a sturdy waterproof case and a handlebar/stem mount. I've taken some falls with a similar setup and not had any problems. Also, now you've got a giant ass cycling computer!

Easy to install, have a minor issue with mine where a cable is ometimes resting on my neck, since I didn't take the time to put the wiring in carefully, headphones are of decent quality, and can go too loud (because you still wanna hear traffic!)

I also didn't use the microphone slot, that cable is kind of a pain, it's maybe.. 6" at the isde of my head and just sort of flops about, sometimes I hear like "tick tick tick" from it hitting my helmet at speed
