Some of these can also be found from retailers online, like Best Buy and Target. I generally use Best Buy, Amazon, and eBay, but check other retailers just in case.
Case: Looking for a protector that protects your system from scratches? Most people recommend the HORI TPU case. NA currently has one for the XL (LL in Japan), but you'll have to import one for the standard size.
Looking for a pouch to keep your system from dust or to carry on-the-go and protect them from falls? There's sooo many options you can just search up on Amazon and eBay, not to mention other Japanese import sites.
Screen Protectors: Screens will inevitably get scratched, as careful as anyone can be. If you're someone who cannot stand scratches or want to keep your system in perfect condition, you can't go wrong with screen protectors.
Micro SD card: Can't go wrong with Sandisk, and I purchased the 32GB since that's the highest Nintendo says the system will support. Any higher and you have to format it to FAT32 in your PC so the system will recognize it. Any good brand will be fine though, but I just go with Sandisk all the time.
Stylus: This DSi stylus is so damn comfortable. I never thought it mattered because I just put up with the cramping, but I purchased some items on the Nintendo Online store, so I went for it. It's all I use now. The cheapest shipping is $5 on the store though, so go for it when you're ordering other items with it.
Customization?
For N3DS
Coverplates: Amazon.JP if you have a forwarding service like Tenso. I like AmiAmi, but it's hard to catch the plates sometimes. PlayAsia tends to be more pricey, so sometimes you're better off just looking on eBay if your last resort is PlayAsia.
For N3DSXL and N3DS
Charms: Basically the same as the above. Many options around Etsy, just search what you want up. Up to your discretion. :)
Overall
Yeah, I'm a HORI fan. Their products have been solid for me, so I have no qualms with them. I just wish more of their products would appear in NA so shipping times would be shorter, but I think the wait times have been worth it anyway.
Shin Megami Tensei IV and its sequel Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. You may be familiar with the franchise already, the popular Persona 5 is a part of it.
My other big recommendation is Bravely Default, and its sequel Bravely Second. The combat is also the most impressive thing about the game, and its hard to explain, so try the free demo for either game on the eShop. If you do try the Demo, and beat it, it gives you a bonus if you play the full game. Both are fantastic games, and are throwbacks to classic Final Fantasy games of the NES and SNES era. If you do try either demo and beat it, it will unlock a bonus in its own full game.
I use TPU cases for both of my N3DSXL's and another one I had to special order from overseas for my N3DS. They do a good job of protecting the systems and still allow me to see the designs on them since I wanted something clear as I have Monster Hunter faceplates on my black N3DS looks like this, and my XLs are the Galaxy Blue and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate units.
For carrying around, I have an Amazon Basics Case that is small and light and fits in a backpack or purse easily while protecting the whole system. Fits both N3DS and N3DSXL units with the TPU cases on and uses the elastic bands to hold them in place.
For storing at home so they're kept in good shape: I have two of the Smatree Hard Protective Carrying Case which is a much bulkier case, and allows me to keep a 3DS charger with the units if I don't put much else in the zippered pouch on the top half. The inner pouch with the ability to lift it out is an interesting design for keeping the system protected and is a snug fit for N3DSXL's with the TPU case on, but still doable.
Amazon Link for HORI N3DSXL TPU case. It used to be much cheaper, so look around to find the best price.
Amazon Link for the Japanese version HORI N3DSXL TPU case. This alternate link is about half the price for the same exact product that's above.
eBay link for a New 3DS TPU case. I recommend this for N3DS units as the glossy plates are easy to scratch on N3DS units and the plates can be hard to get as it is, don't want them to get scratched when they're hard to find or expensive.
Finally, no matter what unit you get: Always use a screen protector and get one once you decide which system to get to have it ready for when you finally get your system. Some people have waited on getting protectors and have scratched screens day one since the plastic over the touch screen is quite soft.
New 3DS IllumiShield Screen Protector Set
New 3DS XL Tempered Glass Protector Set Note: I have used and recommend the HORI brand, but those seem to be out of stock on Amazon and I'm not sure where to look for it.
Then, there's also GRIPS for the units as they're quite small and thin and quite a few people have problems holding their units. I like the styles from CyberGadget and use their grips, but there's also silicone grips that some people like. You can take off the TPU case on the bottom and put the grip on and just store the TPU case somewhere as you use the top half of the TPU case to protect the top shell of your unit. Obviously, any grip out there will bulk up your system and make them less portable and unable to fit in any of the cases. However if you're at home, it's nice to be more comfortable with your gaming sessions.
The two I'll link are my preferred grips for several reasons: They keep everything on the 3DS accessible as some of the grips are known for blocking off the game card slot and even the stylus, they have a game card door on the back that can store 2 game cards in there, they're easy to put on and take off, and won't scratch your system as they're covered in a rubberized material.
New 3DS Grip from CyberGadget You should be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.
New 3DS XL Grip V2 from CyberGadget I use this every day on the N3DSXL that I play.
Hori Screen Protectors - easy to apply and gives you the assurance of not scratching your screen.
Better Stylus - the one that comes with the 3ds is fine but I find getting a better stylus works wonders when playing a stylus heavy games. Rocketfish sells stylus similar to the ones that came with the dsi xl in packs of 2 and I think can still be found at bestbuy.
Carrying case - if you like bringing your 3ds around for streetpass then putting it in a carrying case and tossing it into a bag will prevent wear and damaged to the system itself. I'm currently using a Hori carrying case and I find it pretty handy and it can hold 3 games.
Bigger SD card - if you plan on downloading from the e-shop then a nice 32gb sd card is great.
Assist grip - coolclown makes a nice assist grip that I find really comfortable if you plan on using your 3ds for long periods of time.
Crystal clear case - some people don't like the extra bulk but I like them for protecting the outside of the 3ds. If you purchased a limited edition 3ds then a hori tpu casing doesn't add too much bulk and protects your handheld.
Hope I'm not too late, but as someone who enjoys fantasy games and shooters, I'd recommend the following:

Recommendations for no particular reason

PS. I see a lot of people mentioning Pokemon, but if he hasn't shown interest in Pokemon by now he may not like it. It seemed like the perfect game for me but I just couldn't enjoy it half as much as everyone else does.
Pretty much any starter kit is just cheap crap. I'd advise you to just spend a little extra and buy quality.
Styli. Basically the only spare bulk pack available at the moment, hence the long shipping wait.
Car charger I would instead buy either a portable power bank and 3DS USB cable or a USB car charger like this and a 3DS USB cable. A power bank would be a good bit more expensive but is really nice to have if you have a lot of electronics you bring with you. Here's a pretty good one.
Great card case holder.
Budget but good carrying cases: 1, 2, 3, 4.
Yes, its more expensive to go this route. But I promise you that you will be happy you did. I bought those crappy starter kits for my GBC, GBA, and DS. The stuff was low quality and generally just doesn't last. I bought stuff for my 3DS similar to what I've linked here and have been much happier with the quality and make
To try to summarize the 3DS line up :
the original models (3DS/XL) is the older "slower processor" model, so is the 2ds which is flat in design and doesn't open like a shell.
I would avoid those all together, actually you won't find them new in stores any way, except for the 2ds which I also would avoid despite its cheap $79.99 price tag, it has some drawbacks of a small screen, single low volume speaker and of course the slower processor, I really find the 2ds only suitable towards children for durability.
the newer models (New 3DS/ New 3DS XL) are the ones you want, they're faster, with better 3D effects and eye tracking, and a small nub added to controls.
I believe the SNES edition you mention is the New 3DS XL model here :
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-New-3DS-XL-Super-Mario/dp/B076KRDRQG
See on box the (new) word above Nintendo, that's what you want, and I beleive this particular SNES edition is regularly on discount so you'll be able to grab it (it went down to $99 temporarily last month) so keep an eye out for it.
In addition to those New models, Nintendo launched last year the (New 2DSXL) which has everything the New 3DS models have, except for 3D effect which some people don't use or care about.
The New 2DSXL is an excellent choice, it is heavily supported by Nintendo in different colors and packaged games, and is constantly on sale if you keep an eye for it.
So my advice is you should choose between a (New 2DSXL) or (New 3DS XL SNES Edition) , either choices are brilliant, just get a feel of what he would like more and if he really cares about 3D effect.
Other answers :
All DS games work on the 3Ds.
The Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS are the same I think, but it's still a totally different amazing experience on 3DS to play on the go and in hand held.

This is the SD card that I got. It is 32 GB. For the price difference between 16 and 32 (~$4), I thought 32 was worth it. I did not have to reformat it or anything. It was great. No problems thus far.
If you're interested, I have 13 GB left and have installed:
For 10-20 games, I'm inclined to say you might be more satisfied with a 32 GB SD. Hope that helps! Happy gaming :)
I had ordered a hori LL one off ebay and it took almost 2 months to get here and it was bent when it got here. So it would always have an air bubble in the middle where the bend was. Also keep in mind the hori ones also only come with 1 set in the package so have fun if you mess up putting it on.
Since I didn't want to wait another 2 months again I then just ordered these ones off amazon. Iv been using them for about 3 weeks now.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1OO5PU
I'm overall pretty happy with these ones.
The top glass one is fantastic. 3d still works just fine with it. The bottom PET one suffers from what even the hori ones do. they are not edge to edge. you are going to have a small gap around all the edges(if you get in in the center). its really small gap and you wont notice it at all when playing. You will just see that its not edge to edge when the screen is off. From the few games I play that require the touch screen I haven't notice any degradation of sensitivity with it on either. So like I said before I'm overall pretty happy with these.
Hori TPU case for sure, they are great and wont scratch up the 3ds like other cases. This is the hori tpu case i have, the previously linked case is a harder tpu plastic.
skins you can get lots of places, depends on what you like. I have the zelda 3ds XL and it looks great through the clear hori tpu case, decals/ skins also come though great.
as for flash carts on the 3ds, read this thread from this subreddit
edit for cases
The clear Hori case is nice. I have the red one with my red 3ds xl, but it will keep the outside of your console safe. The Hori carrying case is nice too, but only holds 6 games (7 if you keep one in the 3ds). I have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Retro-Mario-Pouch-Nintendo-Black/dp/B00DWXUYN0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1393959834&sr=1-1&keywords=hori+mario+case
Surprisingly it's $2 cheaper than the regular. The 3ds with the protective cover fits in this case, but it's a tight fit.
Why don't you like screen protectors? I have screen protectors on all my electronics with screens, but I follow a long process to get them on. I don't even notice my screen protectors anymore. I don't know about the circular bumpers, but I'm also worried about scratching up my bottom screen with the stylus. Good luck.
I recently bought a set of 5 different colored teloscopic styli from a vendor on amazon and have noticed no problems in the 3 I have tried. They click in to the system and dont randomly wiggle out when its holstered and im playing. They also have the option to extend about 3 inches making it feel more like a pencil thus making it more comfortable. I was a ready to be disappointed but was thoroughly impressed. And 5 styli for 5.95 USD plus shipping is a pretty nice eeal, iny opinion.
No, I do not work for this company. I am just a satisfied customer trying to help a brotha out.
Heres the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009MJWM92/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1415776441&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40
I was in a similar situation as you when I picked up one of Nintendo's refurbished N3DS systems last month. I was coming from a N3DS XL and had the Cyber Gadget grip for that; which I loved. Unfortunately, I found that tracking down non-XL N3DS accessories was not very easy. Additionally, I found that the Cyber Gadget version of the non-XL grip was outrageously expensive for what it was and couldn't be found anywhere from a non-3rd party seller. I checked just about everywhere from Amazon to eBay to PlayAsia, but no luck. I even tried Amazon Japan but no luck there either. I eventually just bit the bullet and decided to purchase one of the cheap ones on Amazon (this one). It isn't perfect, but for the price, I would buy it again and recommend it. It does its job of making the system easier to hold for longer play sessions which is exactly what I needed. Hope this helps!
I found a really good awesome cases on Amazon.ca.
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01G3X6ZME/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Super legit case. I love how the case is secured and connected by hinges(I have two New 3DS XL and two New 3DS systems. Some hinges of the systems are more loose, there seems to always be a variance or play) But this case makes your 3DS really sturdy and protects it.
They also have it for the New 3DS XL....
EDIT: Also for pouches and traveling, just buy any 3DS case and it will fit/suffice. I use this https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01J75ZEHM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00DWXUYN0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and this one for at home https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00VB0I8U2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NJ2UEW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the battery I bought. The fourth picture gives the best idea of what it's like in real life. It adds a good bit of bulk to the 3ds (which is a positive, in my opinion) and probably wouldn't fit the circle pad pro. As for the battery itself, I can charge it once a week, play 15 hours easily, and have it on with the wifi enabled the whole time without it even hitting the red.
A portable charger would probably be easier to get rather than a bigger battery that is also compatible with the circle pad pro.
I have this case and I love it. It's clear so I can see my pretty LE system. It doesn't let the system close the the point of anything making contact with the screens. And it is very thin. the clear N3DSXL version does not have hinges that the other versions do, so you don't have to worry about them breaking. The case snaps in place and doesn't slide around at all.
Highly highly recommend. I can get a picture later if you'd like.
Like I've mentioned in a similar thread, I have this case and it's great. A few good features are that it has enough slots for all the games I have (and allows for room to expand) and can carry the AC adapter. The best feature though is the pocket for the 3DS itself. I almost always carry just that removable pouch around (in my lunch bag when I go to work, in a cargo pocket on my shorts if I go out shopping or to the mall, etc.) with the 3DS and a couple games. If it's a longer road trip, I velcro it back into the main case and take the whole thing. I love it.
The charging cradle is great, unfortunately it leaves you unable to put a case on the new 3DS. If you want to protect it from scratches, you can use a skin. There are clear skins if you want to preserve the look of your 3DS. If you want to change things up a bit, you could buy a skin with a design, or design your own. I made this one at decalgirl.com. If you don't want a full skin, there are some cool decals to be found on ebay and etsy.
If you want a pouch, most made for the older 3ds XL will fit the new one. There are simple ones like this from Hori. It is currently available in all black or with various graphics (Zelda, Mario, NES controller), and it also has room for 6 game cartridges. If you want something fancier, there is the popular city slicker and gear pouch pro from sfbags, or you could get something custom from etsy.
As for screen protectors, the new 3ds xl has the same size screens as the older model, so any screen protectors that fit the old xl will work.
I bought one from amazon, and it was decent quality, but it came with a few minor dings which I suspect could turn into quite a few more over time.
I had simultaneously purchased a Hori cover from amazon, and it is head and shoulders above the no-name aluminium one. The Hori feels semi-rubbery, and hugs the system really well, but was also relatively easy to take off. The generic aluminium one from amazon made me concerned about potential scratches from the gaps between the system and the case and it didn't seem to grip my device really well, especially the cover for the top.
Heard Tales of Abyss is a GREAT Rpg, and so is Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei 4 (these are things I've heard.)Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing (I know you said you like RPG games more, but i really like these games.) Any of the DS Pokemon games are pretty darn good and Tomorrow Mario & Luigi Dream Team Is coming out!
I bought the Skinomi Full Body Screen Protector for my 3DS. I read a lot of the reviews and heard mostly positive stuff. A very small number of people claimed that it could damage the 3DS, but from my experience, possible damage is not an issue. Although application was tedious because of a lack of a diagram, all of the panels applied evenly and without much issue. Now my entire 3DS is protected and has a nice light sheen to it.
If you just care about the screens, then there's also a Skinomi variant that just has the protectors for the screens. A lot of people like the HORI protectors too, although personally I can't say whether or not they are good. Hope this helps, and I hope you find what you are looking for.
HORI also makes a Duraflexi TPU case for the n3DS for what it's worth (which is also clear, but textured on the inside giving it an ever so slightly cloudy appearance), not just screen protectors.
And if you're the kind of person who is into pouches, this Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate pouch is pretty awesome I think.
I just noticed the same issue last week and I ordered the HORI screen protector.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HPAXZ2/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The only reason I didn't install a protector when I got my 3ds around 2 months ago is because I was worried it would decrease the screen sensivity, I just installed it and tried Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, and it worked perfectly P: too bad I wait so long I have a couple of small scratches on my system.
Also my reason to go with HORI is because they have a really nice applying process :) look for it on youtube it's super easy and it works great.
I just got this one in the mail.

Other notes:
The "class" of the card refers to the read/write speed. Apparently it doesn't make any difference in gameplay and the system itself, but when you transfer files from your SD card to your computer (transferring to a different SD card or uploading a screenshot to Facebook for example) the higher the class, the less you have to wait. I'd recommend a class 4; it seems to be the most common class and works just fine for me.
I'm getting a New 3DS XL for X-mas so I was in the same boat as you, on google/reddit/amazon/youtube I was looking to see what I should get. Here's what I ultimately decided on:
And of course charger, usb charger, and a plethora of games.
Edit: Typos 'n stuff.

Good luck!
I use an Anker (here) with one of these. I've never done a full set of charge cycles on one Anker charge, but it should charge my XL 5-7 times before the Anker itself needs a charge. I usually share the power with my phone though.
It's also worth noting I use the 1st gen Anker - I've had it for 2 years and it's still going strong. This one looks even better - especially the fact that it can detect what current to send to your device (mine has a 1A and 2A port)
This shouldn't cost you more than $40-50 total. I'm seeing the 13000 mAh battery at $30 right now, and the cable is about $6 shipped.
I use the Pull-N-Go folio by PDP, I have one for my vita and love the shit out of it so I got one for my 3DS XL. It also fits perfectly in the case when you pull out the shim!

If you haven't bought it yet, I'd go with this only because it's new and cheaper. Of course I'd say the Zelda one looks cooler but if you're ok with any edition, this is a better deal. $150 for a brand new N3DS XL + free Super Mario Kart
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-New-3DS-XL-Super-Mario/dp/B076KRDRQG
The original is pretty much perfect for my hands. They’re just slightly bigger now. As for the XL, it’s just uncomfortable for me since it’s hard to hit the bumpers and it takes a little more work just to multitask (lowering my hand to get to the dpad, add more pressure to face buttons. I mean, I use my middle fingers just to use the bumpers sometimes!)
Besides that, I need a new battery anyway. What if I get one of the bulky ones so my hands won’t feel crammed together and making my hand position feel more natural? Maybe this one? It’s not too big

Oh I don’t know..
I use an Incipio offGRID IP-679 along with this cable. I got the IP-679 as a work anniversary gift even though I knew I'd probably never end up using it and there was nothing else on the list I would remotely even want. I'm glad I did though, because it lasts forever. It's just a generic USB charger so it's not meant to attach to the 3DS but it's smaller than my iPhone 5s so it's super easy to pick up the charger and 3DS in one hand if I want to move to a different room. The cable I linked to is almost 4 feet long (about 44 inches) so your 3DS doesn't have to sit right next to the charger. You have plenty of wiggle room.
I hope I'm not too late but i was looking for the same screen protector three days ago when I got my new MM 3DS. Amazon was sold out just like you said but they still have this one in stock.
It's the Hori one for the old 3DS XL, however since the screen size are the same it fits like a glove. I hope this saves you the scavenging.
So in the Shin Megami Tensei 'main series', Shin Megami Tensei IV (SMTIV) is the fourth game without any significant story ties to the other main series games.
In terms of SMTIV, there are two games: SMTIV the original game, and SMTIV Apocalypse, its sequel. The sequel involves some story elements from the original game, so you probably want to play the original game first.
Here's some basic info: both of them are turn-based RPGs, and the difficulty level is rather high compared to most of the other games on the 3DS. Especially the beginning of SMTIV. Be prepared to die, maybe often. Also, the story is pretty important in this series, so I would suggest playing them in order. The games are both very good, but Apocalypse might be slightly better? I think it's just personal preference. Either way, I'd play both.
Aside from the screen protector they are all really optional
You can go with any screen protector, I got like the Hori ones
32GB SD card
r4ids.cn R4i Gold(the firmware may not be updated when shipped so you may need a pre v4.5 3DS or DS Lite to update it) and Micro SD to hold the DS roms/saves/r4 firmware. 8gb is plenty
For Cases
Full 3DS Case or This Travel Case
A circle pad pro XL if you buy a game that supports it is nice, other things like a 3DS usb charger cable + external battery pack if you need the juice for trips are handy.
But aside from the screen protector which I highly recommend the rest are optional.
They have the SNES 3DS on Amazon for $149.00
Just remember you have to buy a charger for it.
Nintendo New 3DS XL - Super NES Edition + Super Mario Kart for SNES https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076KRDRQG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_q77OBb6KGD5T8
The 2DS XL at Best Buy is $129. Which is what I bought. It comes with a charger.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/nintendo-new-nintendo-2ds-xl-black-turquoise/5877100.p?skuId=5877100
You can’t go wrong with the Switch, though. I play it everyday.
I picked up one of these at Sears on clearance for $5.97. I've seen them at Target, Walmart, and other stores for $15-17.
It has spots for a 3DS XL, 8 games, and two extra styluses (all held in by elastic bands). It also has a lanyard that can tuck inside and be held out of the way by another elastic band (I didn't even notice the lanyard until now since it was tucked away when I bought it). I'm sure that you could fit more games into it if you needed to, possibly in a case similar to this stored on top of the game flap.
I haven't used it yet, my 3DS XL is being delivered (got an Island Tour bundle for $130, don't care about the game, just wanted a solid colored system), but I tried an old DS and a few games in it, and it holds them securely.
The case calls itself a "hard shell". It's harder than fabric, but it definitely isn't crush proof. I just got it to keep my 3DS XL and games together when I travel, and it'll do the job nicely.
Was debating getting a 2XL or a refurbished N3XL for me and my sister but found a new N3XL for $175 on Amazon. $50 more than getting two 2XLs but, brand new, 3d feature is there if needed, better speakers, and longer battery life (several reviews have mentioned 2XL has shorter battery life).
So, I'm on the hunt for some accessories and was wondering if ya'll could help me pick some out.
Charger Will need 2 of these.
Charger | Price
---|---

Akwox | $7 | 2 | 125 | 4
Dmax Armor | $6 | 3 | 65 | 4.5

I use these: http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Retractable-Compatible-Nintendo-3DS-XL/dp/B009MJWM92/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382568666&sr=8-2&keywords=3ds+XL+stylus
I only use one (the black one) but I guess it's good to have the back-ups if I ever lost it. Fits perfectly flush when inserted into the console. They telescope (like you can stretch it out to be longer). They have a nice metal feel to them and I prefer their tips to the one that my XL came with.
I imported this Hori 3DS Case. It fits perfectly, and holds 3 games. The material feels nice, and it is small enough to fit in a small purse.
When I want to carry more games and an extra stylus, I use the Retro Mario Case. It has a strap to keep the console secure, holds 6 games, and a long stylus.
I also recommend a shell to protect the system. like this TPU one (its slightly flexible and feels good in your hands):

The TakeCase is pretty awesome!
The people who make it have done several giveaways on this subreddit and they stand by their product as well. I had an issue with the zipper on mine after 6 months and they replaced it, no questions asked.
For a travel case, it's by far the nicest I've had.
https://www.amazon.com/TakeCase%C2%AE-Lifetime-Guarantee-Microfiber-Comfortably-nintendo/dp/B00UG63VDG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468484831&sr=8-1&keywords=TakeCase+3ds
There is this soft plastic case I use for my Zelda 3DS XL. Link it is really nice, super high quality, and if you search the subreddit you may be able to find someone with pictures of one on their Pikachu XL. I seem to recall that being a major factor in me purchasing it. It's amazing and I have had no issues with it vs. peeling issues when using a cheap hard plastic case on a regular 3ds in the past.
Edit: It says hard cover but it's pretty flexible so I consider it 'soft' plastic.
i dont know how to make them less noticeable, but I do recommend getting a case of some sort. Since I have a limited edition 3DS XL i went and got this clear case and it is excellent.
The best investment I made for my 3ds. Generic 5000mAh extended battery. Only $25 provides 4x the battery of the original 3ds
The best investment I made for my 3ds XL. Mugen 5800mAh extended battery. More expensive than the generic one above, but well worth it IMHO ~3x battery life.
3DS XL Mugen Battery Expansion Test - Youtube
I recently purchased a Galaxy N3DS XL, so I wanted to protect mine as I am super OCD about scratches and wear and tear.
I bought this clear cover after reading reviews about the Hori not being quite clear and a little loose: TNP New 3DS XL Case - Ultra Clear Crystal Transparent Hard Shell Protective Case Cover Skin for New 2015 Nintendo 3DS XL LL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018DM48BS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_zJU6yb7TQ0522
In addition, I like to keep my things in one place when not using, so I purchased this case that fits charger, cartridges and the 3DS. It also fits the 3DS with the clear cover on it: Keten New 3DS XL Case for Nintendo New 3DS/ New 3DS XL Hard Travel Protective Shell for Nintendo Console& Game, Also for Anker External Battery Store https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FDA42PU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pMU6ybK2QC85D
I'd recommend the 3DS Pull and Go Folio. It has a large flap inside that holds over 20 carts. There's also a mesh pocket for the charger, and the portion that holds the 3DS attaches with Velcro and can be easily removed to take it on the go. Inside the removable 3DS pouch, there are also two slots for carts. I use the entire folio to store all my games, but usually just remove the 3DS pouch and throw it in my bag before heading to work. I should also note I use this case with a 3DS XL, and it fits just fine.
The only time I take the whole folia with me is when I'm going out of town.
You can see pics of the case here: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-Pull-Go-Folio-Black/dp/B004KPH7TS. Happy hunting!
Edit: I can't math. The flap holds 18 games, front and back. The inside panel of the back of the folio has an extra six slots. The 3DS pouch holds two. And obviously the console itself can store one. So 27, in total.
As a fellow owner of the Zelda 3DS XL, I highly recommend that you get the Hori TPU case and some screen protectors to go along with it.
No matter how careful you are, your 3DS is bound to take some degree of damage eventually. This case does an excellent job of protecting it from normal bumps and wear (it won't do much if you drop it, but that hopefully wouldn't happen) while still showing off the design. Screen protectors are just good to have.
An additional note: I also suggest getting some sort of cleaning cloth to put between the two screens when you close the system: the bezel on the touch screen will scratch up the top screen.
Heres an Amazon link for the black 3ds that is actually cheaper than the white one. Also the faceplate is quite nice
And here's a link for the white one, this one you're probably going to need another faceplate for imo, but the second one that is included is not too bad.
I personally would suggest checking at your local GameStop/eb games, Best Buy or something along that line before buying it off of amazon. But if you can't find it anywhere you should try and see if there is anywhere else online you can get it cheaper while it's still new.
Edit: One thing you're going to have to keep in mind is that the new 3ds never comes with charger cables. If I remember correctly.
I found this was a pretty nice video.
As far as a battery pack: I personally wouldn't recommend one. They're overpriced. For around the same price you can get a USB>3DS charger cable and buy a much larger battery bank instead. This one in particular comes to mind. You can also use this for other devices, and not have to worry about the extra bulk so you can use a protective case or grip. :)
Edit: Here is a mugen power pack for comparison.
The link provided there isn't a grip, it's a Circle Pad Pro for the original 3DS. You already have a C-Stick on the New 3DS, so it's pointless even if it did fit.
Either https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WU8EEAC/ (which I bought) or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTEMTD4/ are considered the best ones. There are pros and cons to each.
The first one doesn't have a cartridge slot open to pull your carts in and out, meaning you have to take the grip off to change physical cartridge games. However, it's more comfortable to access the triggers than the second one.
The second one is generally the more popular one despite being more expensive. There's room to carry two extra games in the back stand, and isn't as hard to take off as the first grip. However, the positions of the "fake triggers" can be confusing and uncomfortable for when you do actually want to use the 3DS triggers.
This is by far the best case I've had, and it's only 15 bucks on best buy. also i got the screen protectors from gamestop and that's it
I just posted about a case earlier here: http://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/2yzv37/nn3ds_carrying_case_on_a_budget/cpentr8
> http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL505-Case-Black/dp/B00A5LK6QM This is the one I personally use and love it. Don't buy it from here though. It normally goes for $15. I only linked this one for the pictures.
>Here's a better picture. http://www.toysrus.com/graphics/tru_prod_images/Nintendo-3DS-XL505-Case----pTRU1-15272455dt.jpg IDK if this is actually the same exact model I use, but it's almost identical. And it says it holds 8 games but I've actually been able to fit 2 games in each sleeve. It also says it's for XL but it has a little extra room to fix a N3DS
The dimensions on this one are just very slightly more than the N3DSXL in width and length, and the thickness is about twice that of the original XL.
Which one? I picked up mine when I was living in Japan. I think it was like $15 or something at the time.
It's awesome. I can fit both of my 3DSs, cords, and back up power pack.
This. If you wanna game a bit while you stroll on the treadmill for some post-workout cool-down that's ok.
I've never understood the people that go to the gym and spend the whole time on treadmills, cycles, elliptical.
If you wanna change your body, the free weight area is where you want to be. Get whatever music works for you, and get your head in the game.
That said if you want to keep your 3ds safe, my recommendation would be something from HORI
I got my NN3DS XL at the end of March for my 23rd birthday, and it still looks as good as new. Absolutely no marks or scratches, etc. It's had screen protectors since pretty much day 1, and this case protects the shell. I also keep it in this case when not in use. I use a microfiber cloth to clean the screens when I change the screen protectors (only done that once so far).
HORI has the easiest to apply Screen Protectors and best case available. The case is soft so you don't have to worry about scratching the clam shell itself.
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Nintendo-3DS-Screen-Protective-Filter/dp/B008HPAXZ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+screen+protector+xl

I had a problem like this for my DS lite, and I had to get the battery replaced. Though, on the bright side, if you had to get your battery replaced, 3rd party sellers have already made batteries superior than the Nintendo ones.
http://www.amazon.com/5000mAh-Extended-Battery-Nintendo-CTR-001-MIN-CTR-001/dp/B005NJ2UEW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1369516134&sr=8-4&keywords=3ds+battery
Cases like this will totally fit:
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Retro-Zelda-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo/dp/B00ND0EBP4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422474932&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+xl+link+case
Cases that fit over your 3ds while you use it, like the HORI TPU cases, will obviously not fit. There is a new version of them coming out though.
Does anyone have recommendations for good screen protectors for the 3DS XL? Generally I'd get the official ones, but they seem to be discontinued/super expensive.

These two seem to get decent reviews at Amazon. Has anyone used either of these? Is tempered glass a must? Thanks.

That seems pretty expensive for a class 1 32 gb card, I just picked up a class 4 32 gb from Amazon for ~$19 (this one, to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-AFFP/dp/B007JRB0RE/) It's worked perfectly for me. Class 4 is really all you need if you're just using it for gaming, classes really only matter if you're using it for something like photography and want to take super fast high action shots, then you might want a class 10, but class 4 is all you need for a 3ds.
Wash hands before playing, don't eat while you play, keep it in a hard pouch/case, use a screen protector, clean using a microfiber cloth, don't do stupid stuff like jam a coin into the circle pad to hatch eggs in pokemon.
For example, I use these for pouch / cloth / screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo-NEW-3DS/dp/B00RZ7TC82
cloth: https://smile.amazon.com/Zeiss-Jumbo-Microfiber-Lens-Cloth/dp/B008PNNY02
screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK
edit - to add to this, I personally wrap my 3ds in the microfiber cloth before putting it in the pouch
Amazon currently sells the black friday version for 162.00 from 3rd party sellers. It may be your best bet.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01MFAWPRA/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
This is the one I ordered from Amazon about a year ago for my limited edition Pikachu New 3DS XL. As long as you clean the system and make sure there are no dust/dirt particles inside the case it works beautifully. It was only about $10.
TNP New 3DS XL Case - Ultra Clear Crystal Transparent Hard Shell Protective Case Cover Skin for New 2015 Nintendo 3DS XL LL - [New Modified Hinge-less Design] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018DM48BS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RB8gDb9X0H1TR
It's actually pretty awkward. My friend bought one, and neither of us liked it very much. I'd wait 6 months, when 10 other companies have made a version.
personally, I'm using this: 3DS Pull n' Go Folio. It's pretty sturdy, about the size of a small fabric 10 CD case, and has room for 29 3DS/DS games. The pull out case is what the console lives in. It velcros into the bigger case, and has room for 3 carts(including the one in the 3ds)
The Hori Line is fantastic. There are mario/zelda themed ones out as well.
I highly recommend.
I got this pouch: http://smile.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-3DS-Pouch-emblem-Nintendo/dp/B00D84DRNC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_vg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0E3GKB3FNZ90F7SEP03F I fucking love it, it's roomy, and it looks good.
The USA standard 3DS size was released as a special edition on Black Friday in 2015 or 2016. I can't remember. No idea why Nintendo hasn't supplied more since then. But they are a real thing and they do exist.
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-New-3DS-Super-Mario-Black/dp/B01MFAWPRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525094358&sr=8-1&keywords=new%2Bnintendo%2B3ds%2Bblack%2BFriday&th=1
It's been marked WAY up, but used it's not as bad. Keep in mind that this was a special $99 Black Friday deal plus tax. But that's BLACK FRIDAY where everything is crazy cheap, so I think the used price on some of these is pretty fair.
Amazon listed them for pre-order about 30 minutes ago.
Note: Not a referral - I don't earn anything from the link. Just want to lend a hand. :)
If you're worried about portability and battery life, get an original 3DS (the glossy one that can fold and always has black around the screen).
https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/browse/subcategory.jsp?categoryId=cat20003
You can get refurbished units for relatively cheap, and you can disable the 3D with parental controls if it bothers you. And there's more battery extenders for the original 3DS than there are for the 2DS. Look up the Nyko Power Grip, or get an extended battery like this:
http://www.amazon.com/5000mAh-Extended-Battery-Nintendo-CTR-001-MIN-CTR-001/dp/B005NJ2UEW/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1415885534&sr=8-14&keywords=cameron+sino+3ds
And as for flash cards, yeah R4 only runs original DS games, not 3DS, and flash cards that do run 3DS software are either limited to certain firmwares or are very expensive.
This seems to be the best valued SD card.
Both items fit the 3DS XL perfectly. I have both.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UG63VDG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got this because it holds everything I need including earphones and plus it's a hard case, which I wanted. Pretty cheap cost wise as well.
this one works perfectly. Some are probably gonna come and say get a Class 10, but it honestly makes no difference. the games don't load any faster so you can save yourself $2-3 dollars. Class 4 is what the system came with anyway
This. Does not scratch the system and does not add much bulk.
EDIT: I personally use it for my Animal Crossing 3DS XL and it looks great. I highly recommend this case.
Can someone post a photo of a Nintendo charger with something for scale (like the xl unit itself) for me? I have the new 3ds xl, but the store didn't have the official charger so I'm just using a standard brandless one. It works fine, but it's a little bulky and I can't imagine it fitting into any case. Thinking of buying a charger from Amazon when I buy myself a case. Thanks in advance!
ninja edit: I'm considering this case, there's a pic of a charger in the pocket but I can't wrap my head around how that will fit since I don't know how small the Nintendo charger is :(
I got this guy as a gift and it works great. Won't fit a full wall charger, but I can fit my usb cable in there.
I'd recommend getting an SD card with a faster read/write speed.
A class 4 SD card will give you longer load times.
You might have probably ordered the one you posted already, but I thought I should share this anyway.
It's a UHS I Micro SD card with an adapter for a regular SD Card slot. [Link: Amazon]
I used the same one with the adapter in my original 3DS and I have the same one in my N3DSXL right now. (albeit without the adapter) The faster speed does make a difference in load times and loading up games.
TNP New 3DS XL Case - Ultra Clear Crystal Transparent Hard Shell Protective Case Cover Skin for New 2015 Nintendo 3DS XL LL - [New Modified Hinge-less Design] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018DM48BS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LfHyCbBEFW461
I like this one. I have the SNES edition and want to be able to see the graphics. I like it.
Here is the one I use. Works well, is comfortable, has a neat little stand that folds out the back. My only complaint is the bottom lip of it covers the game card slot so you have to take it off to change cards, although this isn't really an issue for me as most of my games are digital.
You really need a grip to play monster hunter or its torture on your hands.
This glorious piece of plastic has allowed me to play 100+ hours of MH, I can't play without it now.
Someone else posted a grip for the XL, mine is for anyone that has a regular size N3DS like me.
wow. that's expensive, but it looks nice.
this showed as a related pouch. http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-3DS-Pouch-emblem-Nintendo/dp/B00D84DRNC/
If you're into monster hunter this is a pretty good pouch.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D84DRNC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has two pockets inside for cartridges, but I found it easily holds a 3DS XL in the hori duraflex shell, a hori 6 cartridge game case, a small microfiber cloth, and the 3DS charger with some room to spare.
You could also try searching Amazon for 3DS LL pouches/cases as the 3DS XL is referred to as the 3DS LL in Japan.
A good case is really all you need. I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-Pull-Go-Folio-Black/dp/B004KPH7TS and have been extremely pleased with it.
Not very many, if any, games need 3D. It's the only major difference worth noting - they play all the same games.
Worth noting that on Amazon, you can get a New 3DS XL for the MSRP price of the New 2DS XL.
One more thing - New 3DS XL systems don't come with AC adapters, New 2DS XL do.
That's nothing compared to what we have here in canada:

I just bought a new microsd card to expand my storage without checking if it's compatible. I assume any microsd card up to 32gb will work fine (without having to format it to FAT32). But does anyone know for sure that the one I bought will work?: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010Q57T02/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_pre_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Is this the page you ordered from?So I would think this means you simply ordered too late and Amazon has run out of first print editions. Might want to contact them and try your luck at a refund and source other retailers if you want the CD and book.I own this case here:
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL505-Case-Black/dp/B00A5LK6QM
Pros: It's very a very good travelling case. It has quite a sturdy shell to protect the system from falls and inside it has elastic straps to hold the system and a small flap that holds 8 games. You can actually put two games in the little sleeves and fit 16 games in the flap, plus one in the N3DSXL. Plus it has some holders for extra stylus.
Cons: Quite large so it can't fit in your pocket. Has no mesh sleeve to carry any extra accessories.
I just bought this one and I absolutely love it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D84DRNC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I see. I'm assuming mine is original 3Ds since I got whenever that Kingdom Hearts game was released.
I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff. Would this be a usable SD card for my 3DS?

Luigi 3ds xl Hori case
Holds 6 games, has a strap to hold the 3ds in place, and will fit a 3ds with a clear shell. There are other styles, too, such as zelda.
Original LoZ Hori case
I need a new stylus for my XL. Does anyone know of any particularly good ones? I need it to fit in the stylus slot and not fall out.
I was thinking these or these, but only because they were the first few to come up on Amazon.
It does fit in that particular case. N3DS XL is almost exactly the same dimensions as old 3DS XL give or take a millimeter, and fabric cases like that one are plenty accommodating.
You could also try this case if you're willing to spend double, or a high-end solution if you spare no expense to protect your devices.
You will need a microsdhc card. I just bought this one and it worked great! It is also around 10 bucks. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q57T02/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_-5VLxb4SF1T37
I prefer the standard New 3DS myself. The size is great, bigger than the OG 3DS and smaller than the XLs. I still bought a grip, mostly to flesh out the thickness, and now it's really comfortable! The faceplates are nice too, I sticker bombed a set. A point that people will argue is screen size, I think the New 3DS's is fine and the XL is too big for the resolution. Also, screw the gloss on the New XL, it's a terrible finish. The pattern looks nice, but I just can't stand the feel. Some of the faceplates for the New 3DS are glossy, but I think every New 3DS bundle (at least in the US) comes with at least one set of matte plates.
I bought this set of five retractable styluses that are perfectly compatible with the 3DS XL slot. No regrets whatsoever. I even gave some to fellow 3DS XL friends as gifts.

Just buy a 16 gig microSD, they're like less than $10. It'll make things way easier in the long run
Here's a 32 GB for less than $14

I'm on my phone or I'd directly link you, but look for the Japanese one. It's in stock. :)
Edit: Here ya go! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YAALT8/
Are you referring to this? I was looking at that case, I think its minimal but still nicely styled. Does it work well for you? No issues?
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Retro-Zelda-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo/dp/B00ND0EBP4 I have this one and I love it if toy look in the related items they have more of Zelda isn't your thing.
I just got these and they're coming in tomorrow. If you're interested I'll let you know what they're like.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1OO5PU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've looked a bit into this as well and the Mugen does seem to be the only 'integrated' solution. It's nice that you can bolt it on relatively seamlessly but I also decided I don't want to carry the extra weight around all the time (or a little screwdriver to constantly change it in and out).
Personally I ended up adding this external charger to my Amazon wishlist for next time I travel along with this USB 3DS charger cord for about $60 less put together. (And I'll get to charge my iPhone with it too!)
This is the only plastic one I am aware of that is still easily obtainable for the n3ds (non-XL): Amazon Link
I think it feels great, but as other reviewers mentioned, it blocks the cartridge slot and can be a tight fit for some. It also makes the power button even harder to press.
I got this one recently and it's great - holds 8 games and 2 styli http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo-NEW-3DS/dp/B00RZ7TC82/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1463668041&sr=8-2&keywords=3ds+case+hori
While it's not the best, I bought this one for my 3ds xl: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-AFFP/dp/B007JRB0RE/
It works perfectly fine for me and I've currently got 6 digital games on it. But it's only a class 4 so it's a tiny bit slower than a class 10 (which I believe would impact loading + saving for 3ds games). However, since there's a sale on Sony class 10 cards, you might consider that if someone can guaratee that it would work for 3ds - though it probably would.
This is strictly for new 3ds XL
For body cover, i recommend This gametech soft cover over Hori duraflexi case. the Gametech case has a couple of clips that hook into the lanyard loop holes on the back. If you're annoyed because hori case doesnt really stick to the device, then you're gon love this gametech case. One thing to note is taht the case itself actually has a frost color rather than clear
For the carrying case, I use this Takecase 3ds xl case. It can store up to 8 games in its central compartment. It also has a inner zip storage where you can store a charger and still have room for 5-8 games more. There's a mesh net that holds the 3ds xl on its place. It has everything that I want from a 3ds xl carrying case. There are other alternatives, but they have very snug space, and don't have inner zip storage
Five different colors for 5 dollars, plus they are metal and retractable. They look great and slide out much easier than plastic, but they aren't loose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009MJWM92/ref=s9_hps_ft_g63_ir02?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=0YDTF0FFDX3FHMFSZS1M&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=1618918262&pf_rd_i=1000993821
Hori as a company is one of the few I feel put forth "Nintendo Quality" in their product so buy with confidence, I haven't been burned on any product I ever bought from them. I currently have my Link Between Worlds XL housed in this, which is housed in this and I recommend them both. My only complaint about the pouch is it's specifically designed to house the system and like 6 games, but there's no room for a charger. If they made a new model that could fit one though, I'd buy it.
Got the 32GB Sandisk here and it's been amazing.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007JRB0RE/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I compared it with the speed of a class 10 sandisk extreme card I had, and there was absolutely no difference in loading/save time. I think the read/write on the 3DS is capped at a certain speed and anything higher than that doesn't matter. From the research i've done, it's more about the brand you get than anything else. People have tried lesser known brands and they ended up getting read/write errors, or sometimes it didn't show up at all. Sandisk and sony cards are good choices though.
Thanks! It's this case from Amazon.
Been using this one for awhile. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018DM48BS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_amtxDbKX2HMG6 Same as yours but no hinge. Works great for me.
I got the retro Mario Hard Pouch from Hori and I'm in love with it. On Amazon
They don't seem to be as common as the ones for the XL, but here are a couple of potentials. ebay [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Gam3Gear-Handle-Stand-Nintendo- Black/dp/B00WU8EEAC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479395397&sr=8-1&keywords=new+3ds+grip+-xl+-ll) For reference, mine looks like this.

As a general rule, it's handy to have a USB charger anyways, and go with the biggest mAh you can afford. I've got one that holds 7800 and can charge two devices at once. The 3DS has a 1300mAh capacity, so that battery charger you listed will get you about two full charges, but like any other battery the effectiveness will decrease as time goes on. As for the cable, I bought the $3 one off Amazon such as this one
by purchasing an external battery charger, you can charge up your tablet, phone, 3DS, ipod, or whatever USB-powered device you need without having to carry around too much extra equipment
So any SD card will work right? Like this one from amazon?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007JRB0RE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1454047410&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=32+gb+sd+card&dpPl=1&dpID=51p6ATCp2JL&ref=plSrch
Might I suggest you get this

And get the TPU clear casing as well while at it.
How hard of a hardshell are you looking for? I bought Hori Hard Pouch case for my New 3DS XL off Amazon and I've been quite impressed by it.
Any carrying cases you would be willing to suggest? I found this one, but I think it's too big to fit in a pocket.
I just bought the this GatorCrunch cable off Amazon. Don't have it yet, so I can't report on quality. But the reviews were good and the price was right. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071BJK34
Prices on Amazon are even better
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-AFFP/dp/B007JRB0RE/
I have a N3DSXL and use This Case... understandably you probably wont want link but my SO has the pikachu version... anyways I can fit my N3DSXL, 6 carts, and my USB wire in the case nicely... though I have a travel Port in my backpack at all time for charging cell phones, ipads, and my 3ds when needed
Edit: oops... didnt mean for the bot to show up
I'm bitching to GameStop customer support about it, but I did choose 1 day shipping in the hopes that it'll arrive in time for me to be able to trade in my current XL.
Also, why not just buy a USB charger?
But I agree, the exclusive deal is shit and they should have had an in-store pickup option to facilitate the trade.
In my Racing folder:
Pro tip for Mario Kart (and other games that cramp your hands): Invest in a cheap grip like this one I bought for my New 3DS. It makes a HUGE difference.
Also itching to play Ridge Racer 3D but it's not on the eShop and I haven't seen it in any stores.
Thanks for your suggestion but I was trying to find just the cable itself. I saw this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071BJK34/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=22RTSQZUTX0L3&coliid=I2BN6BF9YI1G5S on Amazon and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with cables of this sort?
Amazon has it for $8.99, plus free shipping for orders over $25.
I use this card in my N3DS XL and have never had a problem with it.
The easiest way to transfer everything to the new card, if you're able to do it, would be to copy everything from your old SD card to your PC and then from your PC to the new SD card.
Don't pay for 2 day shipping, just get Amazon Prime. It's so worth the money.
Also, you'll want one of these to go with an external battery: http://www.amazon.com/Gator-Crunch-Charge-Cable-Nintendo/dp/B0071BJK34/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374374641&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+cable
That's the one I have, and it works well.
This one if pretty great
This is a pretty sturdy case that may work for you.
TakeCase
After reading this sub, this seems to be the most recommended. I have a pair and once applied properly they're unnoticeable, but I recommend you look up youtube tutorials/read up before trying to apply them. It's a little trickier than advertised IMO.

Get one if you out it in your pocket and get dust ok n it your top screen will be scratched by the bottom. I got thease http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Nintendo-3DS-Screen-Protective-Filter/dp/B008HPAXZ2
It's not the same physical size, and adds weight and bulk, but I grabbed an aftermarket one from amazon for ~$25, and now I get a solid week from my 3ds.

Get a New 2DS XL. I like the Pokeball edition
And the Hylian Shield
New 3DS XL Snes Edition
I got this TPU case from Hori, it's one of the best cases I've ever had for any device. It hardly adds any bulk to the device and is nearly crystal clear. It's softer than plastic so it won't scratch the 3DS' surface but it's also hard enough to provide decent protection. It's hands down this subreddit's favourite case.
I recently just got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WU8EEAC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is just plastic, but is cheap and fits the regular New N3DS. Had decent reviews. I haven't use it really yet, but think it will work well
I currently use this. It's not for an XL, exactly, but according to the top review on there, it fits an XL snugly. It can hold 23 cartridges, two of which are on the removable case that you slip your 3DS into.
There's this, but it only holds 3 cartridges.
This is the one i got and it worked great right out of the box.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q57T02/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You could get a larger one but cards larger than 32gb use a different format out of the box so it requires reformating it before trying to use it in the 3ds.
If you're just looking for a pouch the I can recommend this one enough.
8 game slots, extra stylus holder, wrist strap and it's sturdy as heck.
I have a case like this one, and I have to recommend the cute kirby one too. I also have some telescoping styluses, but you'd have to find the right ones for whichever system you got. It depends on whether it's a new 3ds xl or an old 3ds xl
Like this?

Buy the new card first. They usually include an adapter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010Q57T02/ref=twister_B011BRUOMO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The New 3DS uses Micro sd cards like this one:

can you name the two cases you've tried? I'm also currently in the market. Specifically something that can hold a charger and DS with face plates or a cover. So far i've been looking at this and it doesn't look that bad tbh

I use single-game cases like these from Speedlink. They are easy to carry around in a pocket or so, but I put them in my n3ds carrying case where there is not enough space for the 16-game case.
You could also use a 3ds case like these and put your games there.

Are you just looking to purchase them online, or are you specifically asking about online retailers with brick and mortar stores?

If it's the former, Amazon US has placeholder pages for both models.
I'm not sure about the latter.
I got these and haven't been disappointed. There were a few little bubbles after application but after a few days they were entirely gone.
