I don't think I've had a string break on me in probably 5 or 6 years with any brand, and even then it was wayyyy after they should have been changed. I play a LOT too, and strum aggressively. I don't get how people have it happen to be honest, except for the occasional fluke/bad string maybe?

Anyway, yes - D'addario's hold their tone the longest, and best. DR's have nice tone but don't last worth a shit, elixirs just have a weird fake feel to them and subsequent weird fake sounding tone, and Ernie balls are just kinda there - not too bad not too great, but a cheap option that is available anywhere.

I use exl 117's - they're an add-on item but are crazy cheap, but you can also choose music123 as the seller (or others) and they're still under $5 with free shipping. I then just add a .066 for my 7th string (drop G) that I buy like 5 of at a time from www.juststrings.com. I personally don't like too much of a difference between the top 3 and bottom 3, and this set gives you a nice transition between all of them, instead of having a sharp dropoff between the bottom and top 3 like with some other sets (skinny top heavy bottom type sets)

Jackson JS22 ($200) - http://www.amazon.com/Jackson-JS22-7-Dinky-Satin-7-string/dp/B00BSL5Z1E/

The tone is a little bright, but down the road if you decide you love 7-strings, you could upgrade the pickups.

Edit: Moar words.

I use this fine set of Daddario's NYXL strings. It's an 11-64 gauge set that I use in drop Ab, but also work in Drop A and B standard.

The NYXL strings also have a bright sound that have that new look/feel for well over a month, if not, longer. I can't recommend these strings enough.

La Bella HRS-75 Nickel 7-string... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B6MWJ0U?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I swear by them for my 7 string.

I have the Prog 7. The bridge is a major pain in the ass to tune... if you don't block it. If you put a block (can be anything, a stack of index cards, a piece of wood) and tune the strings, then remove the block then tuning is piece of cake.

I was almost ready to throw the towel until I figured out that trick (it's all over the place on youtube). If you want the tremolo then go for it. Only suggestion I have to make it more manageable is to install this instead of claw that comes with from the factory:

https://www.amazon.com/Schaller-Sure-Claw/dp/B00XD83918

I had no issues whatsoever installing it (just be careful and drill pilot holes) and it makes it so much easier to adjust the tension of all strings at one (useful when adjusting for temperature for example).
