I totally missed reading this thread last week! #vacationprobs

  • Jamz of the week is whatever comes on my Band Perry Pandora station. Doing a lot of repetitive stuff this week so I like to jam along in mah head.
  • What have you been dreaming about (sleep-dreaming? daydreaming? future-dreaming?) lately well it was the beach, and it's probably still the beach! And also about our house, I suppose. We had some resort credit so we bought this really pretty vase and I already know exactly where it's going to go in our yet-to-be-built house. That's probably weird, but it makes me feel all happy inside! Oh, and not really daydreaming, but wanting to get these shoes now that they are so far below list price! Beautiferous black and electric blue! http://www.amazon.com/ASICS-Womens-Gel-Kayano-Running-Lavender/dp/B00GU7B4QQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1415197833&sr=1-1
  • What's a bucket list thing of yours - to go back to the UK and see the Highlands! Travelling to various awesome places pretty much takes up my bucket list. New Zealand, Montana/Wyoming/Yellowstoney area/Italy, France......pretty much everywhere!
  • Do you have any party tricks? ummmmm, sometimes my sarcasm makes people laugh? Haha, I'm usually pretty good about remembering facts about people to use to engage them in conversation.
  • Tips on how to stick to goals during the stressful holidays? - oh boy, this one is tough. Continuing to workout if I can is big for two reasons - it works off some of those calories and it reminds me how hard it is to work off those calories so it's fresh in my mind when I want more pie! And just things like others have said - stick to one plate, skip things you don't totally love - I used to find myself taking both sweet and mashed potatoes. I'm like what, I don't like mashed as much as sweet, just take sweet! It's definitely hard though.
  • Favorite holiday? I'm a bit with dino on this - holidays get a bit stressful between all the mandatory gift giving (which I am hoping to reduce this year), some family tension stuff, and being expected to attend 2094 different family gatherings. There are good things too...my favorite holiday.....I still like Christmas and Thanksgiving a lot, but just as I've gotten older, Christmas has become more stress. But I probably still like that stretch from Christmas to NYE the best. Husband and I usually go out for a nice dinner on NYE and I enjoy that a lot.
  • PICTURE OF YOU (or something) here is me standing in front of some future wine this summer. I have one photo after I got done with my Color Run, but it's terrible and no one should see it, haha.

OK so I love gadgets, especially kitchen gadgets, and I try very hard not to get carried away with buying small appliances and such. Please accept my apologies for the wall of text.

  • Favourite gadget - Well first up has to be my Thermomix, because it cost more than two weeks' wages (and it's awesome). It's a high powered food processor and blender that also weighs, steams, and cooks things, and I use it almost every day, multiple times. Currently it's used a lot for bread dough and soups, and chopping and blending things of course. I use it to steam about a dozen eggs at a time as well (in their shells = hard boiled but somehow better). I don't use my immersion blender any more (though I used to love it), but I still use my bullet blender to grind coffee. I use my slow cooker regularly for beans and stews, and it broke the other day, so I need to get a replacement. The electric pressure cooker I have doesn't work properly so I'm thinking about getting a combo to replace, but might just end up going with the slow cooker. I don't use the pressure cooker very much (maybe because it doesn't work very well? Considering getting a stovetop one).
  • Cyber Monday recommendation (actually not a recommendation, more like my own wish list items!) - maybe the Anova for home sous vide? I would love one of those! Along the same lines as the combo slow/pressure cooker, the Instant Pot 6-in-1 cooker seems to have gotten some good reviews. I guess good cast iron is probably the opposite of anything cyber? :) I would recommend that everyone has a slow cooker!
  • Brands - I like Good Grips as well, but can't really think of any particular brands that I go with regularly. I can say that my parents' Kenwood stand mixer has been going strong since the 70s, so if I were in the market for one I might go with an old refurb rather than a new one (I have heard that brands like KitchenAid are less buy it for life than they used to be). I have heard wonderful things about Le Creuset's products and customer service, but they are a bit out of my price range (says the girl with the Thermomix).
  • Random gadgets - ones I never use that are ridiculous pieces of plastic are a pineapple corer (works well but I never buy whole pineapples) and a potato slicer/microwave chip rack (fiddly and makes about 12 chips at a time). Ones I use occasionally but can recommend are silicon food loops and the ice orb (combination ice tray and ice bucket). I really like the latter because you can make multiple batches of ice cubes and keep them covered. My SO hates it because he finds it really difficult to get the ice cubes out. Oh I also like those silicon mats that you can use for rolling out pastry and dough, and I have these brilliant sloped cutting boards that save juices from getting all over your countertop, and one side is labeled 'cooked' so you can keep your raw meat on the other side. Can't believe it took me so long to find something like that. I found a cheaper version of the Joseph Joseph multi cutting board if anyone is interested: here.
  • Random observation - some gadgets seem to be seasonal in the way I use them (e.g. ice cube tray and blender in the summer for making smoothies, slow cooker in the autumn and winter for making stews).
  • Edit - this was not the best thread for my wallet. I have just ordered a bunch of stuff for the apartment that I did need, but...hmm. The kitchen stuff I bought was a little basin that attaches to the outside of a cupboard for mid-prep rubbish (which I have wanted for a while), as well as a couple of different bowl covers for microwaving/storage purposes. I'm going to see how those go to see what style I like. Hopefully I'll end up using them regularly. Other stuff was little things that I've needed but never gotten around to getting, like a doormat and a toothbrush caddy. Oh and a hot water bottle because my apartment gets super cold in the winter.

Hello 90-dayers!

I think this is a great initiative. I was previously at /r/BTFC, which I found extremely useful to get focused on goals. As there will be many changes for me in the next months (taking a leave of absence), good to have a place, community to track my progress and focus on my goals. This is my first 90 day challenge, so I'm somewhat lost on procedure, I'll wing it!

++++ Stats ++++

  • M/35/183cm
  • Current Weight: 88kg
  • Highest Weight (2012): 93kg
  • Lowest (recent) Weight: Either current, or need to go back in time to when I was 17, as I've been putting fat on progressively (thus my username of becoming_dr_slump).
  • Current Body Fat: 25%
  • Diet: Mediterranean, with too many sugary snacks.
  • Exercise: YAYOG (Currently 1st class, week 4) + occasional biking + some running + occasional Kettlebell

    ++++ GOALS FOR FITNESS & DIET ++++

Diet: Clean eating. Quit sugary snacks. I eat more or less cleanly, except for chocolates on sugars. By October 22, I am extremely proud that I've eaten sugar free on 80 of the 90 days.

Fitness - Sprint 1: July 15 - August 13: I am feeling strong as I'm on Week 7 of Yayog 1st class. Also, I feel the burn from doing Enter The Kettlebell 3 days a week.

Fitness - Sprint 2: August 19 - September 17: I am walking tall and confident as I've finished 1st class. To celebrate, I ran my own sprint triathlon on rest week.

Fitness - Sprint 3: September 23 - October 22: I am strong and generous as I'm in the next 10-week program, week5. I can complete a Turkish Get Up with my 16kg Kettlebell. And do a pistol on either leg without it.

I have no goals on dropping weight, as long as it remains around current level or lower. But I'll be tremendously pleased if body fat goes down to 20%.

++++ GOALS FOR SPIRITUAL CARE ++++

In the last six months, I've become aware of a lot of crap heritage I carry on my shoulders from growing in a narcissistic family. I need to do a lot of cleanup as I choose to (1) have a good life, (2) stop the cycle of narcissism so I don't become narcissistic myself and (3) build an alternative mindset for me and my family. The narcissistic circle finishes with me.

  • By Oct 22nd, every single week, I've taken time to review my goals, the blueprint for the life I want to build, plan action and adjusted my plan. And taken time to care for my mindset and goals.

  • In sprint 1, I feel liberated and full of energy, as I complete all the exercises on The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living: A Guide to ACT: Russ Harris, Steven Hayes:

  • In sprint 2, I'm a generous and happier recovering nice guy, as I've completed all l the exercises on No More Mr Nice Guy: Robert A. Glover. Plus another difficult book.

  • In sprint 3, I've read 4 more difficult books and done exercises. Books to be determined based on needs I determine in the next month.

    ++++ GOALS FOR PROVIDER ++++

By Oct 22nd, I'm confident on my future as I've built a local network of work contacts of 50 people, and identified 10 new positions I'm going to apply to for my next position.

    ++++ OTHER ++++

I need to clean up a lot of my psychological heritage, as it's negatively affecting my relationships and life in general.

I start a leave of absence this summer, to recharge batteries and reconsider next career moves.

I will travel to my country for one month with my kids (source of fun and stress), which will allow me to better understand where I come from and how is my family working.

    ++++ Let's Be Friends ++++

I'm on Fitocracy. I invite you to friend/follow me/message me!

Also, if anyone else on Europe time, support PMs & checks are an option. PM to discuss (never done this one before, seems like a good idea).

Good luck, everyone! We can do this!

Music: I've really been jamming to Hot Right Now and Take Me on the Floor (once again all thanks to Dino's suggestions!)

Holiday Music I really, really love Coventry Carol, even though it's a bit minor and dark. It's just gorgeous sung by a choir. Second would have to be "O Holy Night". It's sometimes overdone, but when it's done by a competent tenor, it's really quite amazing.

My holiday plans are going home to spend a few days with family (caroling, fireplaces, hot cocoa, Christmas baking, tree decorating!) and then going skiing in Whistler for New Year's! Woo! I've never been, so I'm super excited. I hear it's beautiful.

I am so excited to give my White Elephant gift at my office party. It is an original Bozo the Clown Bop Bag. I really, really hope that whoever gets it is close to my desk area so that I can go by and smack it when I get frustrated. :-D

Something I'm super excited about is definitely going to Whistler! I hear it's a giant mountain with a ton of trails, so I may only end up skiing half the day and hot cocoaing/apres skiing for the rest of the day. :-) Either way, should be amazing!!

Hello everyone! I'm /u/silent0siris here for the first time, and I found this from over on /r/bodyweightfitness and thought I should give it a try!

I'm living in Montreal and just started going through a separation-and-divorce (started Dec 1), so I'm trying to focus on taking care of myself and getting my single life in order. I've been pretty slight for my whole life, so I'm excited to try and put on a few pounds of muscle. I've also had a persistent pain in my left leg for a few years- had it evaluated a year or two ago by a PT, just have to do some flexibility work to keep it down, but it's hard to keep consistent about it.

I'm also creating my first on-my-own game in 6 weeks, following along with a group in Montreal. I'm excited to see what I can do!

u/anon233 · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

Hello everyone! Meet me over here! I'm 29, F, 5'2", and 180 lbs. Shorties unite!

So while out doing C25K W2D1 just a few moments ago, I was thinking what 5K I wanted to participate in and last year I really wanted to do the SF Giants race but life went to shit and that didn't happen. Well... IT'S GONNA HAPPEN THIS YEAR! And I'm going to do the SJ Giants race as well! Today, January 27, 2015, I made that decision! And before I even left for my jog, I ordered an armband! I recently moved from simple phone to smart phone world so I can now track my jogs.

Speaking of making decisions, I wanted to quote my book and I have it now: "'I don't make a decision every morning. I made a decision once, long ago, to run every day. When I wake up, the decision is already made.' - Walt Guzzardi, runner" - The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration. I love this book and especially this quote (I even put a sticky on the page with a star) because I substitute "running" with job searching, meditation, eating healthy, etc. Here is the rest of the page for January 8:

Inspiration comes and goes. You can never be sure where, or when, it will alight.

Inspiration is like a hummingbird, constantly in motion. When it finally lands, it's only for the briefest of instants. One small noise and it flashes away so quickly that you wonder if it was there at all.

Every runner needs inspiration, but the best runners and the ones who have been doing it a long time mainly get their inspiration from running. The act itself is what gives them the motivation.

Some days you're not going to feel like it. You're going to feel like practicing your avoidance techniques rather than your running techniques. That's inevitable--and normal.

But if you can find the wherewithal to drag yourself out of bed or the office (or wherever you happen to be) and run, you will receive an instant supply of motivation. You will be flooded with motivation; it will surge through your veins like a drug. You will be reminded once more why you run and why you make the effort. And you will wonder why you hesitated at all.

Remember that feeling--and how good you feel after a run--the next time your wellspring of inspiration seems dried up.

This page is awesome! And now I'm excited to train for my 5Ks this summer!

Hello friends! I'm very excited about this whole process and just trying to better myself. Every day seems to be a different struggle, but I really think it's worth it - seeing a whole community of people really pushing to better themselves every day is awesome!

  • Listening So I'm a huge Hans Zimmer and 8tracks fan (computer version, I don't like the mobile interface) and I have a big playlist of epic/superhero/soundtrack music that really gets me going every day. I have that on repeat, for sure.
  • Reading Textbooks and journals for class. And when I'm trying to avoid screen time before bed, I pick up Whispering Vivaldi, a book that is about stereotypes.
  • Watching Recovering Netflix addict, here. Currently watching Criminal Minds straight through. I try to keep myself to only about one episode a day.
  • Playing around with baking. I'm really into trying to convert recipes into healthier options, so I've gone on a crazy oatmeal muffin kick.
  • Loving where I'm at in my life right now. I'm in a transition point, I'm back in school, I have a great support system... I really couldn't ask for more in terms of my overall place in life. I love this community and support it offers. Just overall happy thoughts!
  • Hating that I'm stressing about applying to doctoral programs. It consumes my thoughts.
  • Hobby-ing I believe my cooking falls under this category!
  • Excited about Going for a walk outside tomorrow - it is beautiful!
  • What else? Just a little about me: I am in a one year (which really equates to less than one year) master's program in which I'm expected to do the research for and then write a thesis (I know I'll be okay) while taking classes. It's stressful. I gave up on life today and took a nap. I binge on rice cakes. But I'm trying to learn to move through it. I love where I am in life, but at the same time I know it's a short transition so I am also stressing about applying to doctoral programs. Just really stressing about this next step, all while trying to enjoy where I am. rant over

    Thanks for listening!

Hey everyone! It is a gorgeous sunny day so I took my strength training workout to the beach today. Hooray! I have also lost 2 inches from my waist this month so I am beyond happy.

I also got the "last resort" sports bra from Title9 and am SUPER impressed. Love love love it!

I have no recipes. I have literally been so bad at cooking lately. I will throw out there though that my favorite cookbook in the universe is definitely the Well Fed cookbook. I have made about half of the recipes and love 99% of them.

u/stubbytuna · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

TBH guys I'm in some real need of encouragement. First of all, I think this is the first time my weight loss/bf reduction goals are actually doing something because I am constantly craving sugar. Before I started this I never even thought about sweets but now it's basically constant. I'm tired and my motivation is shot. IDK what to do anymore. It's tough right now, I've definitely got some post-holiday blues going on. I'm in a funk and I know it.

BQ Well, I'm from Michigan so we do a lot of stuff in winter and it's hard to pick just one. I love just going for hikes in the snow. I also like staying in side and making soup/tea and snuggling under blankets and just watching the snow fall. This morning I was on the way to work and I was listening to this podcast where they were talking about "hygge" which is a Danish word meaning something like "comfort" which is really important in Danish culture all the time, but especially so during the winter. I feel like us Michiganders to that do. I am trying to be more mindful of that, too.

2017 Theme: Hugging my cactus

Round 22 Focus: Physical Well-Being

----

Yesterday: I had an okay day. Work was rough, I'm working with a difficult consultant and it's making my life tough. During the drive home it went from snow to thunderstorm and it rained all night. But I did make some vegetarian sushi using this stupid thing I bought for like five dollars. It was really fun and messy. Great way to burn off some steam. But then I was too exhausted, didn't do my workout as planned. That's twice this week.

Yesterday I succeeded in trying something new.

Yesterday I failed to stay positive and hit my exercise goal.

Today I'm going to do my best to actually do my Strong Curves and my yoga. And also survive today. And eat well. I feel so drained right now and I don't even know why :/

BQ: My favorite book in the last year had to be Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. She just does such an amazing job of explaining how we should see depression/mental illness. The book is also about her struggles with mental health and chronic illness, but she makes you laugh so much through the book. I'm sure it is not for anyone, but if you have a loved one dealing with depression this is a book I would recommend. I have bought copies for people just so they could read it.

Yesterday:

I got everything done on my list, BUT I tried to submit my very last module test and the damn site will not let me. I'm going to be so pissed if I have to retake this test :( I will have to contact the school once they open. Sigh.

In better news, I made more progress in the garden! Planted romaine lettuce, sweet peppers, habaneros, chives, dill, and put mulch around all the new strawberries. I figure by the weekend I should have the raised beds fully planted and the potted stuff pretty close to done! Our dinner salad was also pretty awesome :)

Today:

  • Contact school about test issue

  • Review flashcards for final

  • 1 hour of gardening

  • Laundry

  • Contact doctor if blood work is still not ready (UGH!)

On Amazon though all credit goes to /u/talahrama for finding them and sending me the link! I found another awesome pair on Etsy... but for like $60, and that's just not in my broke grad student budget!

Thanks! HA you say you did 42K like it's nothing... YOU DID A MARATHON!!! That's awesome. And it totally makes sense that your legs would call it quits. Legs have called it quits on much shorter distances that that haha. Thanks :D

I got [one of these for six bucks] (https://www.amazon.com/Iron-Gym-Total-Upper-Workout/dp/B001EJMS6K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492534369&sr=8-1&keywords=iron+gym+pro+fit) which you just pop up when you want to use it. I was dubious (which is why I didn't buy it new) but it's fantastic. (The one I got looked brand new, which happens a lot with fitness equipment. People buy it and then don't use it.)

I wrote to [Dana Jeri Maier] (http://www.danajerimaier.com) who is an illustrator whose work has just a great biting humor to it. I follow her on Go Comics and Instagram and I really admire all aspects of her work. I think I may make it a goal to write a "fan letter" once a week in the next round. It's an interesting way of expressing gratitude for people's work and finding connection.

u/talahrama · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

It's SO helpful to have a community here that I can talk to about running or general fitness stuff. I go on and on so much to my family and friends that I need to actually consciously rein it in so I don't seem like a nut or self-absorbed. I'm very grateful. And I'm looking forward to hearing tomorrow how you kicked pull-up ass!

I started doing leg lifts! Abdomen hurts, B- experience. For pull-up bars (I saw you mentioned on the BW thread), as long as you have a door jamb, you can get something like this, which is what I have. Super convenient, sturdy, easily tossed in a closet when you're done using it.

Good luck with those cookies. I believe in you. If you need help, you can just send 'em to me and I'll take care of them for you.

Thanks for the encouragement :)

The bento lunches have been awesome. I got this lunch box. It was a little pricey, especially because I bought the silverware and sauce containers to go with it, but is well made and was a totally worthwhile investment. I can fit a surprising amount of food inside. Today I had:

  • carrots, green beans and cucumber with hummus and feta cheese
  • caprese salad
  • open faced sandwiches with cream cheese, avocado and onion
  • cheddar cheese and grapes
  • a small piece of chocolate

All told about 1100 calories so I don't have to each an absurdly large evening meal to get enough for the day. :)
u/uninvitedthirteenth · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

Oh yeah, you asked me that awhile ago, damn I have been bad at keeping up with anything/anyone lately. I am super happy being done with trial and can hopefully start to function like a normal person soon!

I have the Veggetti. I like it, it's handheld and easy to use, although can be hard to clean if you don't do it immediately (although you can throw it in the dishwasher)! I didn't do much research into any options, but I would recommend this one.

u/nanochic · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

I love the cookbooks that I have. They're Pilsbury Fast and Healthy, Pilsbury Good for You, and Betty Crocker Quick and Easy. They all require things that are cheap and easy to find.

I'm an inconsistent meal prepper too! I've gotten better, but as of right now I make about 3 or 4 sets of meals at a time since I only have about 20 containers and I'm making meals for 4.

It's just like any other habit, it'll take a bit, but we'll find the food prepper inside of us eventually!
