I mean there are basically two ways. One: improve your fundamentals. That's like the long-term strategy. Basically, read like crazy. New Yorker, the Atlantic, New York Times, non-fiction books, and what not. It's like if you don't even have the muscle to throw a three-pointer, then it's pretty much pointless to practice 3pts.

Second is to learn some reading skills. Annotations, skimming & scanning, etc. Personally I'm not a big fan of these, but they do come in handy if you don't have, like 5 months to incrementally improve your reading.

If you do have the time, I would recommend the following two books:

You should try Dr. John Chung's SAT II Math book.

link: https://www.amazon.com/SAT-II-Mathmatics-level-Designed/dp/1523381531/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1519009778&sr=8-2&keywords=dr+chung

I know it's not for ACT, but I used this book and scored really well on both the ACT and SAT II Math test. The concepts are pretty much the same.

If you are going to spend 150$, get the NSpire CX II. It is actually cheaper but just a better calculator, as well as much newer

i used the full book rather than the ACT 36. they're the same price, so i opted for the one with more material. this book was decent, but definitely not the best. ivy global was my favorite but i maintain that crackact tests helped me more than any prep book

I've been using this one Link. It's helped me a lot but also crackact.com is extremely helpful.

Timex Ironman, with a start/split button on the face. Unscrew the 4 tiny screws, take the back of the case off, and then put a piece of scotch tape or a round sticker in it so the 2 springs that stick up can't touch the back anymore, this makes it beepless. When the reading or science section starts, hit START, then when you finish a passage, hit SPLIT. Thereafter, when you glance at the watch you'll see both the overall time and the time spent in the passage simultaneously, which is pretty helpful. You should be able to find one for $25 give or take.

I didn't end up getting the test buddy for whatever reason, I think there were bad reviews. Instead, I got a more expensive but, in my opinion, a perfect watch for the ACT. watch. It has separate timers for each section, and you can stop/pause/restart at any time. It's completely silent and does exactly what it advertises.

ACT Prep Black Book, Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT and Top 50 ACT Math Skills for a Top Score are used by lots of students and tutors. I won't recommend you reading the whole book though. Smart prep is all about finding your weak knowledge points first through practice and work on those specific skills through targeted and focused practice or reading related materials to fill the content gaps.

https://www.amazon.com/Barrons-ACT-36-3rd-Perfect/dp/143800625X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524353113&sr=8-1&keywords=act+barrons+36
The book is from 2015. Even though the ACT has not changed much since then, you may be better off purchasing a newer review book.

For practice tests, use ones made by the actual ACT people - the ones written by Princeton Review or Kaplan or anyone else just aren't the same, and you can tell - especially if you're already scoring pretty well and you're trying to get those last few points. The official ACT red book has practice tests (the current edition has only 3, but if you get the earlier edition (https://www.amazon.com/dp/076893432X/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=) there are 5 complete tests and they're basically the same except for the essay (English and Math are exactly the same, Science and Reading have some cosmetic differences but mostly the same)). There are a bunch online too. Try to find those "Preparing for the ACT" pdfs they put out every year; those let you score yourself.

Hey you really don't want to take those tests up there

I found that link too just recently and searched it up on Amazon and it has some really bad reviews from people who seem very ACT knowledgable

This is kinda random, but I think I just found the Amazon account of one of the founders of CrackAct... through that amazon link...hehe

I apologize, I should have mentioned. I used Barron's ACT 36

u/Gocountgrainsofsand · 2 pointsr/ACT

I also really don't like taking tests online. I prefer writing in a test book.

I'm currently using this book and while it doesn't have many practice questions, it goes into depth about the many nuances of the ACT test, in order to get close to that THICC 36.

I have realized my mistakes for questions 2 and 3 (still no clue about 1 & 4). To anyone else who doesn't know why:

The use of a coordinating conjunction after a semicolon is generally frowned upon (source).

Despite semicolons and periods being the exact same, this explains why the ACT prefers:
"...nickname. Because ..."
to
"...nickname; but because..." (question 3).
The same logic applies for question 2 (why the answer choice isn't D).

My ACT prep book (source) has also pointed out that for almost all cases whenever the ACT decides to test semicolons, they will either use it either with no words in between (complete sentence 1; complete sentence 2) or with conjunctive adverbs such as however, therefore, moreover, etc.. (complete sentence 1; however, complete sentence2). But never with a conjunctive adverb (FANBOYS).
