Thanks for the thoughts!! I really appreciate it. Yeah, I had an empty room before this post, but I got a couple of really tall cardboard boxes (tall enough they got about 5 inches above my head while I sit) and hung a comforter a couple of blankets over me.

The mic is not a great one. It sounds silly, but I'm actually hoping to do a few audiobooks until I self-fund to buy an AT2020 usb. For now, this is the mic I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B078W61ZYP?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title. Pretty crappy, I know, but it had decent enough review on Amazon for me to work with.

The mic was about a foot away from me when I recorded this. I've scooted it up so now it's about 5-6 inches away from my face. I'll post another sample later on this evening with my voice as it is now with the adjustments.

Thanks again!
I use a dog training clicker to mark places that need editing attention. But I've been thinking about getting something like this foot switch. I haven't found one with really good reviews though.
For a handheld solution, this little remote seems like it'd do the trick, and the buttons are probably pretty quiet.
I'll edit this for a more detailed response tonight when I'm at my computer but I want to really, REALLY emphasize that a USB microphone isn't going to be able to carry the range and depth that you can get from a condenser mic. You can get a decent one for $250 that comes with a 2 channel mixer. I'll put a link up later.
I also find that most people keep their mouth too far from their mics. You don't need it to touch your lips when you speak but get a pop filter and bring that thing up in your face for maximum clarity.

I listened to both samples. Maybe if i had on my headphones, i'd hear a difference but to my ears, you sound consistent. It's a good, concise reading and you have good articulation. If I were to point to any single element of it that you might want to address, it's the speed at which you're reading. That's what usually get me in trouble more than anything else. Slow it down a bit and compare what you posted with the slower readings.
Maybe i'm wrong. Let's see what others have to say.
