Not an expert, but

I'd focus on the drive train issues first, get all those tires working, might be a lost cause before going any deeper, but others will have to help with that, I take that kind of stuff to my mechanic.

Brake pedal could be that it's low on brake fluid, or one of the brake calipers is stuck.

My quad has a foot brake like that and a hand brake, but the foot brake only brakes 1 tire. That tire has two brake calipers on it's roter, one to the foot break and one to the hand brake. So the hand brake is all 4 wheels, and the foot brake is 1 wheel. There is a master cylinder on my hand brake and another on my right rear tire (foot brake). If my foot brakes master cylinder runs low or springs a leak, my pedal goes through the floor like in your pic but I'll still have brakes on the hand brake. It's like a double/emergency braking system. If my hand brake goes out I can down shift (engine brake) and lay on that foot brake to brake and not hit a tree...

Fuel wise, it's likely carburetor being old. The carburetor should have a primer on it that injects gas into the carb when you press/pull it. Those generally have a diaphragm in them (rubber) that tends to go bad over time and cause a fuel leak.

If you can find a diagram of the carburetor that would help emensely.

Really though, you should take the whole carburetor off, take it apart and give it a bath in carb cleaner (no plastic/rubber in there) and clean all the jets out.

Also, they make rebuild kits for most carb's that come with all new jets, and pilot screw etc. See if you can find one. I typically just replace them all, easier and then I have spares.

Also, inspect the carb's vent hose and make sure it's intact and not clogged. Check the fuel line too, for damage/rot.

You should also remove the gas tank and clean it out. Take the petcock off and inspect the filters and valve, then clean the whole gas tank out so there's no dirt/bad gas in there.

Then check/change the spark plug(s). Before running it though, I'd check the valve clearance on the valves, guides on that online.

Once all that's done, it should run good and not leak gas.

Then you can address your other issues.

Pending how old it is, there are some parts I might replace just because:

  • Voltage Regulator
  • Starter Solenoid
  • Starter

If the current ones are working, call them spares.

Starters and solenoids are cheap, voltage regulators OEM are expensive, but you can buy a few after markets pretty cheap to have spares.

Tool wise, I can recommend at least the following:

  • Wire/Brushes
  • Jack/Lift
  • Compression Tester
  • [Feeler Guages] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYGIR4) You want these to go from at least .002 to .014 inches
  • [Caliper] (https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-01407A-Electronic-Digital-Caliper/dp/B000GSLKIW/) If you need to measure float height, you want to be accurate.
  • Angle Finder Useful for float height, as most carbs need to be held at a specific angle for accurate float height adjustment.

Then your typical ratchet sets, air tools, impact guns, etc.

And socket extensions (long ones) because getting to some things is a royal pita.

Yes to both questions.

First thing you need to do is fill that pack up. Should have a tire plug kit, a small compressor (I recommend this style: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071R5FQG4/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1523532200&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=air+compressor+tire+inflator&dpPl=1&dpID=51KVThD3psL&ref=plSrch they last a lot longer than the cheaper, diaphragm style ones. They are also much faster. That's not the specific model I have, but close and I've had it for 4 years now whereas I would go through one of the cheaper ones every year or 2. I carry tire slime as well but hate using it because I mount my own tires and that shit makes a mess.

Also, carry a ratchet strap long enough to go around one of your wheels. It's the best way to get a tire back on the bead of you break it off on the trail.

First aid kit.

Tow strap. You should never use your winch as a tow strap. It's for getting you unstuck, not other people. If you have to use it for other people, park your atv around a tree or anchor your atv to a tree with the tow strap and pull them out with the winch power, not engine power.

I'm sure others will chime in and if I think of anything else I'll add it, but that should get you started pretty well. I highly recommend helmets. Especially if you're riding with your kid, since it will set a good example and hopefully encourage continued helmet usage. I know mines saved by noggin. I'm the only one in my riding group who always wears a helmet, but I still do it.

So that thing has 40 bulbs, are they 3W bulbs? If so, you're adding 10 amps worth of draw.

This will be your best bet, the only difference is instead of wiring in the included switch, you'll wire the switched wires to the headlight circuit.

If you don't want to buy the kit, go ahead and buy a relay and harness pack, then wire the black wire to ground, yellow to the positive wire on light bar, the white wire to the headlight positive circuit (your switch), then the blue wire with an inline fuse of at least 15 amps direct to the battery. To handle that amount of power, I'd recommend using 14 gauge wire, I tend to go a little heavier on wire than most, but I like the safety factor.

edit: also make sure you heatshrink the connections for weather protection, and use either good butt connectors or solder the connections.

I put these on my 550 but I went up to 26” tires. This link to amazon is the stock size you have on there now. Sliverbacks are a nice mud tire but $160-200 a piece. For the riding you sound like you want to do these tires in the link will be perfect. Also for $240 for all four it’s not bad. My girlfriend and my daughter ride the 550 now and go everywhere I go with my mud tires on my 1000 XP.

'87 Yamaha Warrior 350. I picked it up for free. It hadn't run for a year or 2, was missing some bolts and the pull start assembly, seat was torn, headlights didn't work, and needed a battery. Work done...

  • Cleaned out rats nests in air box and battery box
  • replaced stator and crank case bolts
  • changed oil and filter (twice)
  • new air filter
  • new LED headlights ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074W3X2D4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )
  • new grips
  • new battery
  • cleaned out carb, replaced needle valve (needle wasn't stopping fuel and was dumping gas in the engine when stopped..hence the 2nd oil change), adjusted idle
  • new (used) pull start pulley and assembly
  • broke finger pull starting and had to have surgery ( https://www.reddit.com/r/ATV/comments/c0ri2a/be_careful_when_choosing_to_pull_start/ )
  • Recovered seat
  • painted plastics and applied decals (wet sanded with 400, 600, 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit. Primed with Duplicolor adhesion promoter, painted with Krylon Fusion for plastic using Gloss Black - roughly 6-8 coats. Wife cut stickers with Silhouette Vinyl Cutter. Applied Krylon Color Maxx Crystal Clear Gloss clear coat - 3 sets of 4-6 light coats with curing and a wet sand between.)
  • new bolts and screws for plastics

I had never worked on an ATV before and learned a lot during the project. It's not perfect by any means but it's definitely better than what it was and its now ready for some trails (or some sand dunes once I get some paddle tires)! I think I have less than $500 into it and it runs great!

Yea they do, but you can't buy shitty chains. The best ones have nubs that stick up rather than just being chain wraps. I have a set of THESE that I throw on my LT Z400 when the snow starts to fall. I did also buy a set of THESE which make a tight fit easier to get (plus they're cheap).

If you want to "Go Big or Go Home" you can look up XGEN track systems. They give you a lot more traction compared to wheels in the snow, but they're expensive.

With those size quads you can grab a 10 foot side load trailer and be very happy.

The problem with rear load only is you either need a longer trailer (to fit them nose to tail) or you'll need to hop on the deck and manually lift/shift your quad to sideways after loading it front ways.

I highly, highly recommend tire straps. They have been game changing for me. I hated strapping in the quads. Took forever, had to compress the suspension, paranoid the whole time I was driving, because if you hit a bump and your suspension compresses a little, it can shift the quad and you can imagine how that would turn out.

These things https://www.amazon.com/Erickson-09160-Wheel-Chock-Tie-Down/dp/B015CJICIK (yeah yeah I know, /r/hailcoprorate) are the shit. I drive on, ratchet the tires down (I use two for each quad on Front Left / Rear Right tires) and leave. Literally done with two quads in < 5 minutes by myself. And for $40 per quad.

Others have said and I'll add, your dealer was an idiot with the handlebar tie down advice. If you need to strap the anything other then the tires, strap the frame. And have someone sit on the front when you do the front, then the back when you do the back. Get the suspension compressed down.

As far as trailers, side load + rear load is ideal. Best case you can get one with tires under the flat deck so you can load from any angle and any location, but they're pricey and (imo) they look ugly for some reason to me. I have two quads and this trailer gives me the ability to load 3 if I need to, pretty happy with it. The ramps tuck under the deck (came with it) and are easy to tuck away quick and pull out and move around.

https://bendtrailers.com/iron-eagle-atv-series-6-5-x-12-atv612w-trailer/

(I didn't buy it from there, that's just the first thing that came up when I googled the trailer).

I was also seriously looking at a Echo trailer (http://echotrailers.com/EE-9-13-Elite.html, the 14 foot version) but couldn't find one in stock. Steel vs Wood is a tossup of Pros and Cons, but I really wanted a 14 foot trailer damnit. I also like some of the options the trailer has (built in ratchet straps as an option, etc...).

Try and stick with 15 inch tires if you can.

I literally just did a shit ton of research on this to make my last purchase, so feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions you can't get answers to.

Marlon, Triton and Aluma trailers are also good - more pricey though as they are aluminum. But your buying some significant weight savings in the trailer, so food for thought.

I definitely want good quality tires but if the Amazon's will last then I'd be good with that. I have a little Rock sectional on my home trail I ride but I tackled it easily with the carisles so obviously it isn't too hard. What do you think about these ones on Amazon? If you were looking to spend a little more then the YI Action Camera works pretty good. I personally use it on the trails and it works well.

Along with the camera I would get the Proshot Helmet Mount System if it works with your helmet. I also use this on the trails and it hasn't moved at all since I put it on due to the heavy-duty velcro they use (I've also crashed a couple times while it was on and it hasn't budged). The chin mount also has no wind resistance, so when going fast speeds your head wouldn't get pulled to a side and branches wouldn't knock it off your helmet.

A Sandisk Extreme MicroSD is what I use and it is fast enough to do 1080p 60fps.

Overall this would cost you ~$140 for all three items. The camera also comes with a free battery offer on amazon so you would have two batteries to get you through a couple riding sessions. (Each battery lasts a little more than an hour)

Here is some footage at 1080p 60fps

Nice. I've seen the camo layout and it's definitely sharp. The triple black just caught my eye, and looked even more bad-@$$ in person. Of course, I had to get the matching Bell helmet too:
