This is really interesting. I'm working on something similar for myself right now. I think first you have to try and figure out what your essential list of justice league members is, although I think we can all agree on Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman, and then +/- Martian Manhunter and Cyborg. I'll preface this with that i'm a huge fan of Greg Capullo, so I'm kinda biased.

  1. Batman - the GC designer series batman. Considering getting the Arkham Knight batman (I'm actually trying to decide if I want to just get the 5 figure set). I also can't get enough of the GC Year one batman but this is not appropriate for a Justice League set.

  2. Superman - I'm going to pick up the upcoming Lee Bermejo Superman. Close second is the DC Icons superman, although I also really like the Multiverse Dark Knight returns superman.

  3. Wonder woman - My favorite of the recent ones is the Designer series Jae Lee wonder woman. I like the upcoming The Amazo Virus figure even better, and then sometime next year we will get the God of War wonder woman figure, which looks spectacular.

  4. Green lantern - this one is interesting because it depends on who green lantern is to you. I'm partial to Kyle Rayner personally, but there's not an easily available/affordable figure available for him. Of the Hal Jordan figures, I like the DC Icons figure, but I'm going to go again with the upcoming Lee Burmejo figure. If Jon stuart is more your flavor, there is a DC collectibles Jon stuart that I'm not a huge fan of. Fortunately there is also an upcoming DC icons Jon Stewart that I think looks promising.

  5. Flash - I love the GC flash so this was easy for me. The DC Icons figure is a little more classic and runs (heh) a close second.

  6. Aquaman - I'm honestly not in love with any of the aquaman figures I've seen, but that may be because he is probably my least favorite Leager, at least of those listed. the DC direct figure is pretty flashy. There's something I don't love about the face of the GC aquaman although I love the body. I think I'm going to end up picking this one up. The DC collectibles one is not bad, I just think its a bit plan and unexciting.

  7. Cyborg - basically just deciding between the new 52 and the upcoming rebirth one. I actually really like the figure from the Justice league war film. I find the other War figures a bit cartoony, but this one is cool.

  8. Martian Manhunter - I love the new 52 figure but it seems to have gotten scarce and expensive. I'm not a huge fan of the figure from the supergirl TV series. This DCUC figure is recommended already on this thread, not sure its for me either. Not sure I'm gonna be grabbing a MM figure in the near future.

Anyway, I love this topic, I love the idea of piecemeal "sets" of action figures like this.

Use acrylic paint and make sure you thin it, adding regular water will work. This is probably the most important step in producing a decent looking paint job.

Better painters than I say shoot for the consistency of milk, I usually don't go that thin, but close. You might have to do a few more coats to get proper paint coverage with thinned paint, but the figure will come out looking much better and smoother than painting straight out of the bottle.

Learn to dry-brush and apply washes. These are two of the easiest painting techniques to learn and apply, and they can take a custom paint job to another level.

Here's an old comment of mine That goes into more detail about dry-brushing a applying washes.

If you need brushes I'll recommend this set. I used them for 90% of all my customs and I'm a big fan. I've also bought a few of these sets cause they're dirt cheap and use some of them for dry-brushing and applying washes. Since dry-brushing kinda tears up brushes you don't want to use a nicer brush.

/r/minipainting has a lot of great tutorials on their sidebar. I pretty much learned everything I know from watching minifigure painting tutorials on Youtube, so maybe check some of them out. I started painting/customizing with Warhammer 40k and D&D minis and most of the techniques apply to action figures.

As JSK said Figurerealm is great, I used that a lot when I first started customizing, and it's great for looking at other people's customs to get inspiration.

I can't really think of anything else, but just ask if you have any more questions.

Pizza Spiderman -- hands down the best Spiderman for the current style of Hasbro Marvel Legends. It could still be possible to find this guy at a walgreens/comic shop/ross for retail - but online he goes for a pretty penny.
92.00 on amazon, I didn't check ebay - I know there is a cheaper knock off of this one aswell.

honestly - they have like 20 more spider people in the current Marvel Legends lineup from the past few years -- if you go on amazon and type "marvel legends spiderman" you will find alot - and then you can ask about them here if you have any questions.

I bought the Marvel Select Hulk from Thor: Ragnarok for $33 on Amazon. It’s 7inches, sturdy, the mold was well done as far as I can tell. I’m a new collector, but I’m happy with the purchase. And as the other guy said, articulation ain’t great.

Diamond Select Toys Marvel Select: Thor Ragnarok Gladiator Hulk Action Figure https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GWP3YR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_PXMUAb2SACS7G

It’s $39.50 from this guy, but there are other sellers.

This sounds FANTASTIC! A few questions on it.

  1. This is what I found on Amazon. Is this the product you mentioned above?
Amazon.com: Reusable Clay Mold Making Only Use Hot Water. Eco package (Clear White, 8pcs)
    https://www.amazon.com/Reusable-Making-Water-package-Clear/dp/B07M9XS3FX/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Blue+Stuff+mold&qid=1566159397&s=gateway&sr=8-1
  2. I also found Blue Stuff on this site:
REUSABLE Blue Stuff plastic moulding for all levels.
    http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/reusable-blue-stuff/8-blue-stuff-mold-8-bars.html
Am I correct in assuming both products are pretty much the same stuff and work identically? Any advantages/disadvantages for one over the other?
  3. Once you have a mold, any recommendations for the best and most affordable material I can use to create the items once I have the mold set?
  4. I occasionally see topics here on r/ActionFigures talking about customs, but not as much as I'd like. Any suggestions for other subs where I can learn more and talk to experienced crafts-people? They don't even need to be action figure related subs--straight up crafts is fine as long as I can apply the how-to's to figure customs.

I also found what looks like a helpful DIY video on YouTube:

Thanks for your nice words. I'm in the basement, right next to the garage. This space doesn't serve a real purpose, other than to get you from the garage to the first floor. I made it mine, it also explains why the ceilings are so high. I'll give your questions an answer here.

  1. I'm using the IKEA Dioder lights for the glass cabinets. There is a lot of wiring that goes along with them though. I've tried to conceal it the best I can. I wire tie the cables to the posts going to the front of the cabinets. There is weatherstripping between the gaps of the doors, so I tuck the cables behind them. If the lights end up dying, you can replace the actual stick without resetting the cables. They're pretty good for the price. I also used a spool of led lights for the Star Wars rectangle display. With that, you can choose your own length, and the lights have like 50,000 hours of use, or something like that.

  2. Those are Copco Non-Skid Cabinet Organizers. You can also get them at Bed, Bath and Beyond. They're an inexpensive option. I should really paint mine, I just haven't.

  3. Like it's been said, that is a baseball bat display case. I purchased mine at Michaels. It's almost perfect for a small 3.75" scale collection.

Play arts used to be a 40 dollar purchase, i could stomach 80 if the character was a favorite of mine but 200 Euros is close to a hot toys / sideshow price point.

I wouldn't at that price to be honest, also Play arts really REALLY varies in quality (look up mass effect play arts or play arts quality on youtube)

I have squall, cloud, judge gabranth and lightning - all of them bought for 40 dollars or less, like i said at that price they're good but not 200 euro good.

godspeed fellow collector.

P.S. have you tried looking at bring arts sora? lower scale but also lower price point

Marvel Select Avenge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WYKZX0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Slsyub0SS6MBE

This is the one I have and I love it, goes great with the marvel legends.

I can personally attest that these fit a lot of Marvel Legends and SW Black Series figures. Not necessarily all, but a lot of them. They're made for 1:18 figures, and come with two pegs and usually one works. Sometimes I've had to use a blow dryer to heat the foot first to get the peg to fit, but either way, it works. They're pretty cheap and go relatively unnoticed. They're kind of small so typically it's one stand per foot on a ML figure.

When this question comes up I see these NECA stands recommended a lot too, but I haven't used them.
u/josh42042 · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

i really like the marvel select hulk

http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Select-Incredible-Action-Figure/dp/B000ZLZ1NU

his size makes him bigger than all the other 6inch figures, the detail and articulation is pretty good too.

u/FjordFjordson · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

I'm curious if there is any website that is better for buying action figures then eBay or Amazon. He wants this: https://www.amazon.com/Wolverine-Legends-Action-Figure/dp/B00EB8GJ5C/ref=sr_1_13?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1468548548&sr=1-13&keywords=wolverine+action+figure. I'd rather find it for a better price, especially because he doesn't mind if it is used as long as it in good condition.

u/IndecisiveRattle · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N87J4T6/

I have these ones ordered, not quite as cheap but I like them a little better because the undercarriage prong option can help with poising in mid-air without sliding down.

u/Spindash54 · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

Just for your awareness, Tamashii does make Blue and Yellow Lightning effect parts. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00WV068C6/

Yours does look really awesome though. Great job!

u/gamer4maker · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

Link. Thanks, I never knew what they were called. I like the ones from BBTS as they look a bit nicer, but if I needed lots I'd probably get the Amazon ones to save a few bucks.

u/itunesdentist · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

For flight stands some common faves are Tamashii Stage Act.4 (come in a 2 pack), Obitsu Action Figure stands (my personal faves for SHF, Mafex & Mezco figures due to a combination of the optional pieces included in the package and the value if you’re willing to shop around for them), DC Deluxe Action Figure Base Two-Pack & Storm Collectibles Dynamic Action Figure Stand (great for heavier figures like Marvel Legends BAFs, Transformers, MOTUC, etc, etc.)

For foot peg stands NECA Action Figure Display Stands work well for NECA figures (as they should) but the pegs tend to be too tall and narrow for most Marvel Legends or Black Series figures. Protech stands have been recommended to me for 1:18 scale figures like Kenner Star Wars, etc., but I don’t have direct experience with them.

u/SergieKravinoff · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures

It's from the tamashii nations lightning effect (blue version). Pretty awesome and worth the relatively small investment imo

u/no1darker · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

Here's an actually useful comment lol. Most people recommend the kaiser doll stands, however these are mostly for museum poses, or very light articulation. https://www.amazon.com/Kaiser-Doll-Stand-2075-Box/dp/B003TP9G9O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1483119942&sr=8-3&keywords=kaiser+doll+stands

Hot Toys also once released a flight stand that's probably more what you're looking for, unfortunately they're long sold out, but if you ever want to check eBay, you might luck out and find one for $50

https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Toys-scale-Dynamic-Figure/dp/B00H40AUV8/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1483119982&sr=8-2-fkmr1&keywords=hot+toys+flight+stand

For my figures flesh tones I use Games Workshop’s Citadel Kislev Flesh which works VERY well with their Cadian Fleshtone.

I've been eyeing Vallejo's Face/Skin Colors Paint Set for awhile. It's 8 colors that'll help add a bit of variety. Amazon Link

u/thestormsend · 4 pointsr/ActionFigures

This Ultimate Spidey is the one being referred too here. And I'd have to agree with everyone. I love, love, love Pizza Spidey, but I'm more drawn to Ultimate Spidey (maybe it's the lack of butterfly joints, I don't like'em).

u/tripled153 · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures

Figure stands are great. Also look into museum wax. Look into the Bandai ACT series of stands*

u/toddjunk · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures

If you're really into Hulk and don't mind have another, I recommend the Marvel Select version of Ragnarok Hulk

He's supposed to retail for $25-30 but now that he's sold out through Diamond, he's selling in the $40-50 range

u/rodareS · 5 pointsr/ActionFigures

Usually a quick google is all you need to identify a figure. If you have the toy line and the character name it shouldn't be too difficult. In this case it's 'Marvel Select Incredible Hulk'.

A pretty good figure, but in no way rare.

You can buy it on amazon for less than $25.

u/skwigger · 3 pointsr/ActionFigures

This is your figure. It is probably the least rare and least expensive of the Marvel Select Hulks.

u/Tonyage27 · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

Thank you! But actually by PP Spidey I meant this one.

u/thenewvegas · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

I've been using the NECA figure stands for my Black Series figure that don't quite like to stand on their own. I would recommend them!

https://www.amazon.ca/NECA-Action-Figure-Display-10-pack/dp/B00ICNW438

u/VenomRaptor · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

Kaiser doll stands would probably be fine if you just want them to stand-up.

https://www.amazon.com/Kaiser-Doll-Stand-2075-Box/dp/B003TP9G9O/

u/SMB73 · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

The only good Hulk figures I can think of Diamond Select's Hulk. Problem is the sculpt is kinda wonky with each of them - there's been three so far. Definitely do not recommend their newest one, it's fugly as hell.

This is probably their best one: http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Select-Marvel-Incredible-Action/dp/B000ZLZ1NU

u/ayarb · 1 pointr/ActionFigures

That's exactly what they are! And they're only about $8 too! Copco 2555-0188 Non-Skid 3-Tier Cabinet Organizer, 15-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036OQU56/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_zgXGxb7HQ6ZB8
