My hardware isn't great to be honest. I badly need a new GPU but I've just paid for a family holiday so it's going to be a while. For everything apart from the gaming side of things, pretty much any old PC should do the job. Even an old amd athlon or Intel core quad CPU should be fine - I mean, kodi runs adequately enough on shitty Chinese android boxes, raspberry pis and firesticks. You're probably better off going with something like an AMD A10-7850K APU though, unless you're looking for a decent gaming experience too, in which case you should check out /r/buildapc for help or take a look at the build guides on /r/pcmasterrace

I'm using this usb hauppage dual TV tuner I bought off amazon for around £50. It works fine. A lot of people say the usb tuners aren't as good as an internal tuner that connects to a pci-e slot on your motherboard and, while they're probably right, that particular usb tuner works well for me. Slap one of those into any old PC, connect it to an aerial with decent reception and you're golden for getting freeview in kodi. If your freeview reception is shit but you have a satellite dish, look for a dvb-s tuner rather than dvb-t. If you want the HD channels to work properly on freeview, make sure it's dvb-t2. There are cheaper options but drivers can be a real pain in the arse. The reason I went for the hauppage tuner is because I knew the drivers would work with both the mediaportal and the nextpvr backend servers. NextPVR is easy to setup and the recordings, pausing live TV etc works great. There is a slight delay flipping channels compared to using tvheadend on Linux but it works about as well for me as the inbuilt freeview tuner in my Panasonic TV.

Anyway, since you asked, my CPU is an amd fx-8350 with a slight overclock, I've got 8GB RAM, and my GPU is a quickly ageing xfx 2GB 7850. It's in a bitfenix prodigy midnight black case on a micro-atx motherboard with a coolermaster 212 evo fan. Using an ssd speeds the general operation up immensely so booting straight to kodi is fast, giving it that 'appliance' feel. Much faster at starting up than a sky box, for example. Mine is an old 60GB SSD that's barely big enough for windows and a few other applications. I've got most of my games installed on a 1TB Seagate HDD and that's what I use for tv recordings.

The case is nice enough looking and moderately compact so it doesn't take up too much space but cable management was/is a disaster. If you're planning on something for your living room, you probably don't want an enormous case with obnoxious led lighting so look into micro-atx or even mini-itx motherboards and cases if you do want something small/ unobtrusive. Just be warned building a PC with those small cases is a lot more finicky than doing it with a nice, big, airy atx tower.

To be honest I built my PC some years ago specifically for gaming and eventually decided to get a smaller case and move it into the living room, so my build isn't really a good starting point. You'd be much better off checking out /r/htpc for inspiration or, for gaming builds, looking at the build guides on /r/pcmasterrace and then customising them to suit your preference.

All in, you could probably build a PC like mine for less than £500 by ordering the parts off amazon, but for that sort of money you should be able to put something much better together with better hardware choices.

It's way cheaper than buying a ps4, paying the inflated console prices for the games instead of steam or you know, just pirating them, paying for either a freeview + box, or heaven forbid, paying the frankly ridiculous prices for sky+. For what it's worth I usually buy my games from steam when they're on sale and it doesn't cost much.

u/UnholyPiccolo · 2 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

That would work, but I honestly don't really have much of an issue with it. But I think for me, I've always had IR remotes for decades that I've always had to point somewhere near the device that it's just normal for me.

https://www.amazon.com/Runrain-Receiver-TSGH-IR07-Windows-WIN7-WIN8/dp/B07P62R8WB/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?keywords=mce+remote+with+ir+receiver&qid=1563485819&s=gateway&sr=8-11

This is the remote that I currently use for my LE install, I don't have to point directly at it, but somewhat in the general direction. It is honestly the best remote for native Kodi control in general (as these are the remotes the dev team uses, I've talked to them before when I was trying to use a real off off brand remote, they told me to just get an MCE remote and save the headache). Bluetooth remotes or wifi remotes are nice, but you often get a small lag with them. Imagine looking at a long list of files and pressing the down arrow 10 times very quickly. A lot of the remotes I tested wouldn't respond well to that. My remote moves at the speed that I press and never misses a button press. But I have never personally used a WiFi remote, just remember reading about them when I was looking.

Also do a little shopping around and make sure the remote is comfortable, and durable. If money isn't an issue a Harmony remote with a hub might not be a bad option as it can control everything!

I had a whole big thing written up for you but I accidentally closed the tab T_T. I don't know anything about the G Box, sorry, but I do know about a few other devices.

I would recommend the Nvidia Shield if you can afford it. Normally $199.99, it's on sale for Cyber Monday for $149.99 with a free $49.99 remote you can sell on eBay to offset costs if you want. Easily the fastest product for Kodi, as well as a gaming rig, Netflix/Hulu/etc. player.

Next is the Fire TV, on sale right now on Amazon for $74.99. Ignore the rating on Amazon as the initially release didn't support 5.1, Amazon pushed out a patch to fix that. Learn how to sideload with a 5 min videos, push Kodi onto their, install firestarter and you're set to go. I use the first generation, a lot snappier than the Fire Stick.

The amazon Fire stick is $24.99 right now at Best Buy, not the snappiest device, but good for just putting on a movie, netflix, Hulu etc and just watching without too much switching in a out, as it doesn't run as smoothly as the other two. Still a great alternative if you don't want to spend too much and do a test run on Kodi and get a feel.

Here's the links to the devices on sale right now

[Newegg, Nvidia Shield (Not sure if remote comes) $149.99 no tax for more]

Amazon Nvidia Shield, $149.99 w/ Remote

Amazon Fire TV Box, $74.99

Best Buy Amazon Fire TV Stick $24.99

Alternatively if you want these a fire TV today, staples and best buy both have them for $74.99 and you can pick it up, try it out for a couple days and return if you don't like them.

Also I hope you're in the US or this was a waste of time lol.

u/spambakedbeans · 2 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

I use both a Rpi2 , and Rpi3. I use the Rpi2 as my backup, in case I need to format the Rpi3. Recently, I installed an addon or update that prevented my Rpi3 from booting. When you need to format a sdcard and start over, it is convenient to have a backup.

I bought two of the velros kits on amazon because they are cheap. Whatever you decide, just know that for Kodi you don't need all of the bs included with the more expensive kits.

Buy a good sdcard and format it.

If you want to use your tv remote with Kodi, buy a Flirc. Super easy to setup, and now you only need one remote. Configure the flirc on your pc.

Install Noobs on the sdcard and decide which option you prefer OSMC or Libreelec for Kodi. I use OSMC. You can also skip noobs and install OSMC directly.

Go through connecting to your network. Note: Wifi will work but I would recommend you use an ethernet connection, especially for streaming higher bitrate/blu-ray files.

You are ready to start customizing Kodi (skin/addons, etc.) The whole process takes a few hours, then it's mostly making small tweaks.

Once you are done configuring the skin and addons, download the official Kodi remote app from the App Store or Google Play for your phone/tablet. No need for the keyboard.

Good luck!

What I usually do whenever there's no Acestream links for Boxing but plenty of browser links. I turn on my Bluetooth iPazzport remote , open Puffin Browser from my Mecool M8S Pro L Android TV box and type the address out, hit play and put it in fullscreen. I've watched a couple of boxing matches like this. TheiPazzport has a keyboard and obviously will make life easier when typing web addresses out. For those that are curious, works well on Firesticks as well.

u/XxROCKxX · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

Very helpful, thank you. So a couple follow up questions. 1. I think that's a good idea about not giving them something fully loaded. I havent used it yet, but I was imagining something that had a simple interface like popcorn time, netflix, or hbo go. So out of all the options even if cost is not that much of an issue, you recommend the fire stick kodi? 2. Are you saying, it's probably better to buy the firestick with kodi loaded on ebay then either learn to jailbreak myself or find a friend that can do it? 3. Also, I just saw this with over 3k reviews and the description says it can load any of the extra apps. Not sure what you think? https://www.amazon.com/Matricom-G-Box-Android-Streaming-Media/dp/B00QHLSKOE/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1481774273&sr=8-10&keywords=kodi

u/squired · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

Ouch, you should definitely look at getting a decent router. That will help a great deal. Something like this.

u/josvm · 3 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

I don't know why you are getting downvoted because it's the best answer. Local channels you can receive for free as long if you have an antenna. you can get 25mile radius ones for $12.99

https://www.amazon.com/1byone-HDTV-Antenna-Miles-Performance/dp/B00IF70QCW/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1478910356&sr=8-7&keywords=antenna

A friend of mine uses an antenna and has been extremely reliable for her.

u/net4floz · 2 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

BUy an OTA antennal. They're like 20 bucks on amazon and you will get all the major networks in HD for free. I use one and get 12 stations in HD. Great for local news and it doesn't use any of your data.

I use THIS one

u/LsDmT · 0 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

I don't know what he's talking about - it's not hard at all....

The best way to do this is use a HTPC (computer) and just ALT TAB out of Kodi in to the Windows 10 Netflix and Hulu Apps

There is not currently any reliable way to natively run Netflix in Kodi.

If you are looking for a simple unified experience a FireTV or Fire Stick (will be slower) is your best bet as you will have native HBO, Hulu, Amazon, Netflix etc streaming that is all in a single interface Then use the Kodi app for everything else.

This is the box I started out with and now I currently use an NVIDIA Shield TV Box but that is a much more expensive box. This one is very easy to use, good remote, and I would recommend you get an empty box and not one of those "preloaded" boxes you'll see all of the internet.

u/ShawnDex · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

Kodi is software you will need a device to run that software most use some sought of Android box. But Kodi can run on many different devices https://kodi.tv/download. Exodus Redux should not be use as it was abandon by it's developer and these addons need contant updates to keep working correctly like finding correct TV show, movies. https://kodiapps.com/addons-chart

These are the Kodi Android boxes that recommend to run Kodi and other apk apps https://www.reddit.com/r/ApksApps/

Android boxes to run Kodi highly recommend NVIDIA SHIELD expensive but well worth it nothing better they also sell non gaming version basically that one comes with out game pad about $20.00 cheaper.

This $28 keyboard/trackpad has been great for me. Trackpad can be a little on the small side when moving the cursor on a large TV, but it gets the job done.

I run Kodi on a small form factor PC, which has been working awesome.

u/Elmattador · 3 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

I use an antenna (all antennas now are digital not HD). I'm in the suburbs so I get really good reception and is good to watch local channels. I went with this one and it seems to work well after a couple weeks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019MNM990?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01

I've only had mine for 7 DAYS and I absolutely love it. I have several other streaming devices and this is now my favorite. I purchased it from Amazon. Link below. Also, I just ordered a Rii i28 mini keyboard for $18.99 but many people like the phone app.

u/MrHundreds · 6 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

Depends on your budget really, should check out GearBest as it tends to be cheaper then amazon when buying android boxes(http://www.gearbest.com/).

If you want a high end box($200) that runs flawless then I would get a Nvidia Shield

If you have a lower budget(under $60) and want it to run good I would get a M8S PRO TV. If you buy this I would change the launcher to something you like as default launcher kinda sucks and uninstall all the apps you won't use.

u/TheMediaAcct · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

Also look into small factor PC's I use this

With a keyboard/track pad combo it makes working on it simple. Plus you get the benefit of a full fledged PC. They make the combos smaller, I like a full sized for typing.

[Here is my set up.]

I use the ChromeBox (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CLQZHF9/) flashed with UEFI (https://mrchromebox.tech/#devices). I then use the FLIRC (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS2V7GM/) to get IR for the remote (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X16D9YJ/). On the actual ChromeBox, I run LibreeELEC (https://libreelec.tv). You can then access the box via SSH.
It is also possible to install a full-blown OS (Linux, Windows, whatever) if you like the added bloat! With just LibreEELEC, it boots (UEFI) in a couple of seconds!

u/clonetheory · 1 pointr/Addons4Kodi

The same addons work with SPMC, the ones I use anyway. SPMC is designed for Android, and includes extra code/fixes to get the best out of the Fire Stick/TV. SPMC is available here. I don't know the current source for Not Sure. As for setting up, use the app Downloader to download SPMC.

u/oavaldezi · 3 pointsr/Addons4Kodi

The actual link address on github is https://github.com/opensubtitles/service.subtitles.opensubtitles_by_opensubtitles/archive/master.zip

I've used AFTV's Downloader app (https://www.amazon.com/AFTVnews-com-Downloader/dp/B01N0BP507) to download the zip, and then installed it in Kodi from zip file.

Potato quality being less than 240p with dog shit frame rate.
My speed test resulted in 65Mbps download and 37mbps upload.
Prior to buying the Matricom G-Box I had been using the program on my laptop, it worked alright.

Today I unplugged my 1TB external hard drive from the G-box and it seems to be running a lot better, actually able to stream movies with Genesis without much buffering.
