>Of course the S10 5G is going to be ridiculously expensive, it's 5G. I'm not sure how this supports your point since the S10 5G is not meant to be a phone that's for the masses. It's essentially a first generation product.

My point? It was your point that "no baseline phone costs $1,300." I was just providing evidence that some do. I already clarified that I am aware that this is not a normal price for a phone. They just do exist.

>I'm not sure what's wrong with buying from third party sellers, but alright, this is literally from Samsung themselves on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NXVM3DG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.n74CbM1K365Q

That's a third party seller. "Ships from and sold by Tech IT Online."

I'm not saying that there is "anything wrong" with third party sellers. I'm just saying that they aren't a good measure of MSRP, as all phones can be bought for all kinds of prices on the secondary market. The baseline S10 retails for $899.

>A lot of people using OxygenOS would vehemently disagree with your statement that OxygenOS has a wealth of problems. OxygenOS is one of the better skins, with some reviewers saying it's better than stock Android. Heck, forget OxygenOS, some stock Android lovers (like Dieter from the Verge) say that One UI is better than stock Android, that's saying something when Samsung's software manages to convert people.

Yeah, and a lot of people would argue that the Pixel is the best Android version by a mile - including myself. It's just opinion. But if you google "best android skin," saying Pixel is the best is not a controversial opinion.

>No one paid $399 due to promotions can be applied to flagships as well. No one actually paid $1,000 for the S10+ because there was a trade in program worth $500 for the S9, S8 and other iPhones.

I know, I preempted that by saying it. I'm just saying that the 3A is $399. If a Galaxy S10 is $900 and a Pixel is $400, a pixel really only has to "last" like 10 months to be "worth it." I think the 670 can hold on that long, given that it seems to run Android 9 with 0 lag (and can play games like PUBG mobile on max settings with no framerate drops). It's basically just a SD845 with 2 less performance cores and 2 more efficiency cores. I don't see it crawling to a stop by Christmas.

I got the SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case Ultra Hybrid
I am highly impressed for something that only cost $10 with shipping.
The one I got is kind of a soft plastic/rubbery material around the outside which feels really comfortable on the hand.
No molding marks anywhere on it so it it looks pretty flawless.
The back is pretty hard plastic, it even has little raised parts around the edge on the black plastic part so it won't scratch the clear back when you set it on the table.
It also came with two neat photo inserts you can stick between the phone and the clear back, or I would use them as templates if you wanted to stick real photos in it. Personally I still just want to see the back of my phone.
The one and only thing I think could be a problem is the buttons, I think it would be hard to have enough pressure to click them though the case. But since I am lacking a certain phone Google won't even speak of its existence. O_____O Its kind of hard to tell. If it indeed does work flawlessly it going to look and feel really freaking amazing being flush with the case.
Also with at least the case design that I picked out the brand logo is pretty incognito which is also a nice touch.
It seems like a really great value for such a cheap price. I think if I was blindly looking at the case and got to test it out with the phone I wouldn't mind paying $30-35 for the case.

So I actually do use a tablet for school that I take notes on and actually have written a few of my reports on as well. Honestly, any tablet would be fine (I'm using a Sony Tablet S. not the Xperia Tablet S, just the Tablet S). What matters is the apps and accessories you use with it.

Apps

I study business, so I don't really need to do a lot of writing. Instead, i type most of my notes out on Evernote. When I do need to write stuff, then I'll use Lecture Notes, though there is a free alternative, but I can't remember its name right now.

Accessories

Unless you choose a tablet that comes with a keyboard (Like some of Asus's offerings, you'll want a portable keyboard. There are some case/keyboard hybrids for certain devices like the one for the Nexus 7 I linked. If not, I highly recommend (and use myself) the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android. As for stylus, I use the Adonit Jot Pro cos it helps me write in my cursive scrawl better than most other stylii. Of course if the tablet comes with a stylus, use that.

You mentioned getting a Note 8. I personally feel that might be a little small, and I prefer a larger tablet, maybe 9.5" to 10", just cause its closer to paper size, so it'll be easier to write on. So i'd suggest a Nexus 10, or possibly a Sony Xperia Z, and also the Galaxy Note 10.1.

The display is good enough I suppose. Which is also the general consensus from reviewers as well. Not exactly a selling point, though.

The main recommendation I have is to get an extended battery. With the stock battery I used to get about 3 hours screen-on time with average use. I pretty much got used to charging once in the middle of the day. That always seemed to be enough.

Now I have a QCell extended battery and a Trexcell case/cover, and I'm pretty darn happy with them. So far, I seem to be getting a little over 5 hours of screen-on time, and I don't have to charge in the middle of the day at all. It's quite a different experience.

It's certainly down to personal preference, but I like the weightier phone, now that I've gotten used to it.

Also, I have the 5 GB plan, and it's pretty sweet. I use Groove IP and this low-latency audio patch, and it works swell.

I haven't run out of data like I expected to, either. I have gotten up to 2 or 3 GB before, though.

I've been using this one lately but swapped out the holder for a CD-slot mount from another car dock. It's the smallest one on the market and works great. :)

https://www.amazon.com/SOJITEK-Wireless-Standard-Charger-Enabled/dp/B01D23M90A/

Previously I had this one which actually had a better one-handed removal mount but just wanted to switch to something a little more compact now that I'm using a CD-slot dock and don't want to cover as much of my vehicle's touchscreen. Both are great options however depending what you want.

The article supposes that Google's canonical page system is being used to inform this behavior. It looks to establish a single, canonical URL for a given page. It says that the canonical page will be determined algorithmically if the page owner does not define the canonical URL.

I wonder if auto-generated canonical pages will trim actual useful content from URLs. For example, timestamps (like "?t=65") on YouTube URLs:

https://youtu.be/qbMTukAJskQ?t=65

Also, automatic subtitle navigation on Wikipedia links (like "#Capabilities")

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_Heavy#Capabilities

I just hope that this new feature will not cause regression in such cases. I do like the idea of Google automatically trimming the chaff from Amazon URLs. I usually do so manually, anyways. For example, an Amazon URL like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Google-Pixel-Unlocked-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B072N3GKSM/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1519145581&sr=1-1&keywords=pixel

really only needs to be like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072N3GKSM

My understanding of referral strings in URLs is that it helps the retailer track page links, I wonder if Google will get rid of referral info in URLs as well?

if you really need that type of storage, a filehub battery pack would be a good option. The WD03 with is a 6 Ah battery pack with USB ports for hard drives as well as SD card slots. think of it like a portable network storage. if you're the type to carry a battery pack around and want heaps of storage, plug in a 4TB external drive and it's a great option. used the WD02 with my nexus 5 on trips where i would be taking lots of pictures. just connect to the filehub over wifi, open any file explorer with network storage capability and connect to it through DLNA, then it's copy/paste. you can also use the ethernet port and have it act as a router at hotels to use a chromecast. ended up giving it my brother as i barely used it and he traveled for work all the time.

$32 on amazon firmware is a bit suspect (phones home to china on startup) but seems like it would be useful for people who want tons of storage.

That's exactly the kind of thing I'd be willing to use, actually. Thanks!

Something like this and a USB/microSD would be great for when I'm not on the move and want to watch stuff.

EDIT: says on Google Play that it's aimed only at the GNex, is it confirmed to work on the Nexus 7?

> And that's not to mention that the magnet, while a super clever idea, doesn't work with every phone, and even if it's compatible with your phone not every magnet will do, it has to have certain strength to be registered so to speak.

The Google Cardboard 2.0 spec dropped the unreliable magnet in favor of a capacitive touch button that should work with any smartphone.

Personally, I never had any trouble positioning the phone or dusting off the lenses, even with the cardboard viewer I received for free. The View-Master VR is definitely a step up, though: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B011EG5HJ2

Has a grille for sound, but if you want stereo audio Bluetooth headphones are recommended.

u/404redditornotfound · 5 pointsr/Android

maybe i'm a bit of a minimalist, or i just haven't as many keys as everybody else, but i would never put such a hunk of power pack on my keyring.

if i'd need a small charger for on the go, i'd go with something like that: www.amazon.com/dp/B005X1Y7I2

twice the capacity, half the price and it also won't damage the phones usb port.

maybe not quite as compact as motorolas offering, but a tremendously better value. as are the big battery packs you guys already mentioned,i have one of those too, but i wouldn't really want to lug it around on a daily basis.

u/Blaziken98 · 1 pointr/Android

For many of you I can recommend a Fiio BTR3, it's a Bluetooth DAC (digital-to-analog-converter) that's super compact, allows you to use any of your old headphones with a Bluetooth enabled phone. Drives my studio dt990s just fine, no worries about power. Can use AptX HD as a Bluetooth Codec, and paired with the good chip inside sounds better than any phone with a headphone jack, aside from a few select LG phones.

I have a phone with a jack still, and honestly I prefer to use this since I could have it clipped on my shirt and pull my phone out of my pocket without wires. Really tilts me to see all you, "I won't buy a phone if it doesn't have a jack", haters. You're limiting yourself to phones with shittier software, camera, hardware, the whole 9 yards, and for what? You have to use a different audio setup that's better anyways? Then again, I prefer equipment that's limited by my phone's DAC in the first place, so I don't have the same view as many of you.

u/ThatOnePerson · 2 pointsr/Android

Best part of a bluetooth keyboard for me that is I'll keep it in my backpack. It's thinner and lighter than a book.

Another option for if you have a more table setup is get a usb OTG cable like http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Micro-USB-OTG-Adapter/dp/B005QX7KYU and connect a full keyboard.

Asus also makes their Transformer tablet lines like http://eee.asus.com/en/transformer-infinity/features where you can buy a keyboard dock that the tablet will sit on. It has it's own battery to charge the tablet and USB ports. If you're not typing that much though I'd prefer the Nexus 7 with a keyboard in a backpack.

u/webdevlets · 6 pointsr/Android

I just need general-purpose smartphone that will work with a Chinese SIM card when I move to China. Is this Moto G7 that is already unlocked a good choice? https://smile.amazon.com/Motorola-Unlocked-Smartphone-International-Model/dp/B07NPRQYP1/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=moto+g7&qid=1559248357&s=gateway&sr=8-5

$214 or $196.99, depending on the color

I would prefer above-average battery life. I don't really care about a stellar camera. Being waterproof would be a cool bonus. But really, as long as it isn't terrible, and it works cheaply in China, then basically any Android smartphone will do.

u/QwertyBuffalo · 3 pointsr/Android

The specific bands you need will depend on your carrier, but the G7 is almost certainly going to be fine with bands 40 and 41.

The regular G7 however, does not have very good battery life. I would recommend the Moto G7 Power instead, which is a phone on the same line but with a much bigger battery. It costs very similar on Amazon at $208, or even cheaper on non-prime options. Alternatively, the Moto X4 is one of the cheapest phones that is rated for proper IP68 water resistance at only $120 (for the prime exclusive version, $135 otherwise), although its battery life isn't as good as the G7 Power.

u/chriskmee · 1 pointr/Android

Anker makes some really nice USB battery packs. I have one of these in my pocket. Its nice and small, yet still gives my phone a nice amount of power when needed. If thats too big for you, they make an even smaller one. They also have a slim model, which has similar dimensions to an average smartphone.

I have one of their bigger batteries for when I take trips. They have many options depending on how much power you want and how much you are willing to spend.

u/Capt-Psykes · 1 pointr/Android

This isn't a direct Android related question but does anyone have any experiences with any good quality Stylus? I'm getting the Nexus 9 and plan to get this to edit PDFs etc on it. Would appreciate any input.

u/Eleminohp · 3 pointsr/Android

It's not quite the same thing, but if you own a Canon DSLR this DSLR Controller app is extremely useful. I am currently a DP on an indie film, and while I have a lot of gear, I decided to skip buying a monitor this time around. I remembered this app being in beta stages and I was like well 7 bucks is cheaper than $300+ for a monitor, so I will try it out. I have the Asus Transformer so a standard USB cord is all I needed to link it up to the camera, but I also bought the OTG cord for my phone and other future tablets. I must say that this app gives you COMPLETE control of your DSLR over your Android and it does it very intuitively. The live view has a slight delay, but for the sake of focusing your shot, a 10 inch screen is the way to do it.

*edit: I should note that if you buy a newer Canon DSLR (like the 6D) you can connect to this app via wifi and forego the cable altogether.

u/Marshmelloz · 1 pointr/Android

Trust me, for all the trouble it takes to build one you'd be better off picking up one of these from amazon for a couple bucks & free shipping. It works with my GS3, even on a custom ROM.

u/BlankBB · 1 pointr/Android

If you aren't an audiophile, you don't even have to spend more than $25 on bluetooth headphones these days, as even the el cheapo ones are pretty good. I've been using these headphones and they work quite well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074QKS8RK/

u/DarkZyth · 1 pointr/Android

If you are worried about space, get the 32GB and then buy a separate OTG adapter. Something like the Sandisk Ultra 32GB/64GB OTG adapter or one that uses MicroSD cards like the Dash Micro. I myself use the Patriot Stellar Lite 32GB. Has a Micro USB for connecting to my Note 5 and a normal USB for connection to my computer. I feel like I've mentioned these quite a lot lately lol. Guess it's because most people don't realize you can still have more storage without a MicroSD card slot (although not a permanent replacement).

u/FNFollies · 1 pointr/Android

I also go between Bamboo Paper for short notes and One Note which has a decent ability to zoom out and pan down so you never have to "add a page" you can just create really long pages. My writing improved immensely once I purchased an Adonit Jot Pro non-affiliate amazon link.

u/Kleivonen · 3 pointsr/Android

My 6P can already do this, and I'm pretty sure most/all Android phones can do this.

Also, lol, no USB-C. Who would back a project that uses a standard that's about to change? Most new Android phones don't use microusb.

Also, these exist:

u/wolfboyz · 14 pointsr/Android

They actually sound really good for earbuds. If you want sound quality, pretty much any bluetooth IEM will do. I have these TaoTronics from Amazon. $25 and it sounds better than my Airpods. Pain in the ass to pair with multiple devices though so I only pair it with my phone and use it on the train for the noise isolation or when I want to hear music with better bass.

For all other times and when I need to use BT with my laptop, phone, and iPad, I'll use airpods and not have to deal with the hot mess that is unpairing/repairing devices because the damn thing refuses to play. The non-isolation is a bonus for me as I can use it at work and around people when I need to hear.

You mean something like this?

SONY seems to have been doing good lately on keeping their OS very lightweight, and they're aiming to be the first manufacturer outside of Google to release 7.1.1 on their devices.

u/darkharlequin · 1 pointr/Android

While I completely agree with you that there needs to be expandable storage, there is a fix around this now that all modern phones have usb host mode and otg cables are available. I just use my standard flash drives that I carry around and a small otg cable.

They also sell otg flashdrives now like this one which has both a standard and micro USB adapter built in that you can just plug directly into your phone.

u/smithdorm · 1 pointr/Android

My wife's car had an aux input standard, so this is what I did for her car. The only difference is I got a BT receiver by Belkin.

It works great - I have an older car and no aux input (and no easy way to get one installed), so I have to resort to an FM transmitter.

Why not get the Mattel VR?

It's designed in partnership with Google to the Cardboard VR specs so you know it's good, and for not much more money, its plastic construction is vastly more durable than actual cardboard.

Because if the industry doesn't evolve it will fall behind.

And yes, probably the intention is to move to Bluetooth for casual audio and use USB support for higher-quality/powered headphones, speakers etc.

A basic pair of bluetooth headphones (I use these myself and they are great for the price) can be had for under $20, a good pair can still be found for less than $100. Battery life is getting better and better.

I don't have bluetooth in my car, but I did buy a bluetooth audio receiver for ~$30 (it was a bit cheaper when I bought it) that powers over micro-USB, and has NFC for quick-connection.

Wires are old-hat.

u/saegiru · 1 pointr/Android

I use a Homespot NFC Bluetooth receiver plugged into my AUX Jack. It works ridiculously well, and if a friend wants to pair their phone with it, all they have to do is tap it(as long as they have an NFC device anyway, otherwise they can manually pair via Bluetooth). It sounds great and is powered by 5v micro USB. It reconnects automatically when I turn on my car, so it's seamless. I tried quite a few different devices and this has easily been the best.

u/bicyclemom · 1 pointr/Android

I don't know if the Galaxy S4 supports USB On the Go, but I carry in my DSLR camera case a USB On-the-go adapter which works with the Galaxy S3. I also carry this small multi card adapter. Connect the USB OTG cable to the phone and the adapter to the other end of the cable. Pop the card into the adapter and you're on your way.

u/kash_if · 1 pointr/Android

The advantage with Android is that you can use one of the small external pen drives with micro USB port or use an OTG cable to attach a regular pen drive.

If you're that worried about it, you could always get a small power bank. Sure it's not as convenient as a removable battery, but I don't see those coming back anytime soon.

u/cranktheguy · 1 pointr/Android

I actually have the receiver from the ajsnoopy's link, and it comes with a wall plug. This one is from the same brand and is made for cars (it plugs into cig power adapter and handles phone audio- unlike ajsnoopy's).

I'm thinking I'll grab something like this, and plug a mouse in. Only problem is, I can't seem to find one that ships to Australia, and I can't find any for retail nearby.

I owned an HTC One, so I get that their better. However, when I think about the times I use the speakers, I hardly see not having them as a deal breaker.

Times I use My Phone| Sound Source
---|---|
On my way to work | Car Bluetooth
At work | Bluetooth Headphones
Working Out | Bluetooth Headphones
Lying on Bed/Couch | Casting to TV or it's quiet, so the regular speaker is loud enough
Listening to music at home | Cast to Stereo or Bluetooth Speaker

I know it sucks and I want bigger batteries too. But there are power banks that weight almost nothing. This one weighs 80 grams and provides 3350 mAh. Enough for a note 8 full charge.
