Get a decent headset, you need to make sure it's comfortable. I've got a few headsets that dig into the bridge of your nose and it's really not comfortable after 10 minutes of use.
I have something very similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/VR-Glasses-Head-mounted-Headband-Smartphones/dp/B015SLWJ0E/ref=pd_sim_sbs_504_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41R2h0bzdpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=02T7W6N6SPJ8P79MXAMG
Your Nexus 6P will do fine. It's got a good resolution on it.
There's an app called TrinusVR:
> Trinus VR (previously known as Trinus Gyre) was created to provide PC gamers with a high-end virtual reality headset without needing to buy expensive hardware, because you already have the hardware in your pocket. Trinus VR uses the display and sensors of your own phone to transform it into a portal to your PC games. Don’t wait till 2016, live your PC games in virtual reality today.
Download TrinusVR (Costs $5) on the Playstore to your Nexus. Then download the Desktop app for PC. Trinus is the only app that I have come across that uses USB tethering to "stream" the games to your phone with low latency. Using WIFI with TrinusVR has a high latency. It uses the phone's Gyro sensor to mimic mouse movement and it does that job pretty damn well.
If everything runs smoothly, you could actually have a better experience than the DK2. I had an Oculus DK2 and this method is in some cases far better than what the DK2 could do.
Games I've been playing: Arma 3, GTA 5, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, War Thunder, Crysis, Half Life 2... there's a ton of others.
If you have any questions, please shout, I'll gladly help as much as I can.
I got a headset like this-

There are many brands selling what looks like the same set. I would buy one that comes with the bluetooth controller, very useful for controlling the device without removing from the headset (allows the joystick to act as a mouse, and the buttons as a mouse click instead of the cardboard magnet switch).
These sets allow for adjusting the distance from the lenses to the phone display, and the distance between the lenses themselves.
I ordered a USB OTG + charging adapter (micro usb male to usb female) to try using a rock candy ps3 usb controller as a game pad (and hopefully the joystick as a mouse).

Buy something like this. In my country, I got a similar one for less than equivalent of $4. Once you connect the device, press and hold @+D to go into Mouse pointer mode. Click the buttons on the side and you'll simulate touching the screen. Hold @+B to go into Gamepad mode, which allows you to use it like a gamepad controller. Useful for many games. Enjoy!
I got this one: ShineCon VR

Is this the one you mean?
I looked at some videos and stuff and it seems like it should work, would it definitely keep the phone in place though? I wouldn't want to spend the money for it not to keep the phone in place. Also the issue I've been having with the current is the double vision thing in many video players, do you think it would fix this? As far as I'm aware this is due to the distance between the 2 lenses being too narrow for the larger screen.
Just got my Gear VR in the mail yesterday, followed your steps and I'm getting some pretty bad lag. It's definitely a network issue, however I am running high performance router(s). Any tips on wifi setup? 1st router is a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 I've tried connecting to both the N and G signals I have setup. From there it's hardwired to my PC through a Asus RT-N16 router that is running in switch mode. All connections are gigabit capable too. I also have a third Wifi network running off the Asus router but it is configured more for range than latency and it had the worst of the lag out of the three. I unfortunately have no wireless card installed in my rig so no WiFi Direct to test. Sorry if that got too nerdcore, networking sucks haha!
I'm going to update my Netgear's firmware and give it another go!
