Three ratings to note.

  • N95 = 95% of particles >.3 microns and larger
  • N100 = 99.97% of particles >.3 microns and larger
  • P100 = 99.97% of particles >.3 microns and larger and also resistance to oils in the air.

Typical 3M Dust Masks are horrible in terms of performance. They're good and decent enough to remove a majority if contaminants that could cause stroke, but they got hot and you end up breathing in a lot of that CO2 that you exhaled. So a little more on these masks and why they suck.

The human body reacts to increased levels of CO2 with anxiety. This isn't run of the mill anxiety you get standing in front of a class for those w/ stage freight, or what you feel peering over a bridge if you're scared of heights.

This is the kind of anxiety you have at the bottom of an olympic diving pool peering up, holding your breath hoping someone would come save you because you can't swim. This anxiety isn't based from some deep fear in your psyche, but it's based on your body saying:

    > "hey, there's a build up of CO2 levels which will kill you, start breathing, I don't care what".

These 3M masks even with the purported "cool flow valve" (which are functionally useless) are designed to:

  • hug your face
  • recycle the air you breathe (causing anxiety when breathing)
  • protect you from dust
  • do the above cheaply

Now, you're wondering, is there something better? Of course there is, but it's going to cost you. This is when you're in the realm of half mask respirators with external filters either disposable or reusable w/ swappable filters. I'll speak to you about what I prefer.

Personally I use the 3M 7500 Series half mask respirator w/ the 3M 2291 P100 filters. The mask is:

  • comfortable with a silicone seal
  • Adjustable straps that spreads pressure evenly across my face
  • uses a variety of filters
  • has two one-way intake valves (for each of the filter cartridges)
  • has one one-way exhaust valve (for your breath)
  • is easy to breathe and stays cool even under active conditions

While a full face respirator like the 3M 7800 is a bit overkill (unless you're also experiencing eye irritation) and also excessively expensive, the 7500 series half mask combination of comfort, flexibility, protection, and value.

Does it also need to be small, lightweight, and durable since it's going in your backpacking gear for a few weeks? How many weeks? Will it be in hot and dry conditions or hot and humid?

The only thing that I can think of is maybe an interesting tin of tea from Red Blossom Tea Company. But you'd want to make sure you secure the tin closed somehow and that no moisture gets into it...

Is the recipient male or female? Age?

EDIT:

Oh, how about a SF themed coloring book for adults?

Or a wallet made by one of the many local companies that are super into making durable bags. Timbuk2, waterfield, rickshaw, etc.

Or if you want to be super worried your whole trip, the SF city mug from Starbucks is very pretty.

This is a really great idea. So many great neighborhoods to see! Check out this resource:

http://www.amazon.com/City-Walks-Francisco-Revised-Adventures/dp/1452109885

PM me, maybe I have these at home and I can send you jpgs of the cards.

Try to string together Chinatown (stockton, not grant), North Beach, Marina, Divisidero, Haight, Hayes Valley, Castro, Mission. Would love to see your final route!

Amoroso is the standard bread for cheesesteaks. I've never seen them retail out here but a few of the "philly cheesesteak" shops get these rolls shipped in from Philly. With so many places having them, we can assume that there's a local distributor and everyone isn't buying straight from Amoroso. Miller's East Coast Deli, Phat Philly, and Proposition Chicken all use Amoroso rolls. You can find more places by searching Yelp for "Amoroso." One of these places might be willing to sell a few rolls to-go or let you know where to buy them.

Also looks like someone is selling Amoroso rolls on Amazon.

Wiz wit. No peppers.

Haha... sorry to skeeve you out!

But I only checked because I was like, "hmm, I feel like I answered this same exact question last week" ... and lo and behold it was indeed also from you.

Anyways- you might check out this book by Po Bronson, it's called "What Should I do with my Life" and it's a nice analysis of people trying to figure out where to live/what to do with there careers/family/finding professional fulfillment etc.

imo sounds like yours is more an issue with attitude than latitude- seems like family/house/hobbies/everything else is good in SD- maybe just start your own company down there, find fulfillment doing something on the side, do some consulting or write a book or something if you aren't professionally being challenged.

Cheers.

I purchased the zinus frames on Amazon. I think it goes for $136 for a king size. No squeaking, and all the parts fit in the headboard so it is easy to move. IMO it looks really good. The only bad thing about this bed is it's a bit low to the ground so it's hard to store things underneath the bed.

I bought an Under Armour sling backpack for walking around the city, and it's been on of the best bags I've had. It holds quite a bit and is comfortable.

That and a light jacket...those are the 2 things I tell friends who are visiting SF to bring with them.

I don't know where you can wash your bike in that area, but I wanted to say that you might consider a waterless bike wash.

For example, this is a car product that works wonderfully on bikes. You just need to have a few clean rags or a supply of absorbent paper towels:

What is missing with the bread you are making? What makes it not 'sourdough'? Taste? texture? etc? Do you have any pictures that we could work from?

What's your starter feeding schedule? How long do you feed it before you make bread with it. You shouldn't make bread immediately after feeding it, I have found about a day after feeding it is a good time. Also, how old is your starter, older starters have better flavor (no real hard line, I have a 25+year old starter that always delivers)

How long do you let it proof? Good sourdough needs to proof 8+ hours, Going faster and using instant yeast with the starter will make it a more mild flavor.

I highly recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Flour-Water-Salt-Yeast-Fundamentals/dp/160774273X

The levain section covers everything about working with starters.

Everyone participates in their own way.

"Nifty Nabbers" are about $19. Ponying up for a rolling trash can is further than I got. I used to clean up random streets when I lived in the Mission. Cigarette butts are the most common piece of trash I found. Plastic containers are generally the most voluminous.

After an event like today, anyone would do well to hit the streets with a Nifty Nabber and spend about 10 minutes cleaning up their nabe, ktnxbai..

I have really enjoyed All The Birds In The Sky by Charlie Jane Anders Amazon. It is SFnal, but the second half takes place in SF (during a slow apocalypse), and when it mentioned certain restaurants, I laughed.

I would try this one by Samyang. It's been featured in so many YouTubes for the spicy korean noodle challenge. A 7-8 out of 10. It's spicy with a sweet after burn. And it's a "dry" ramen where you dump the water out, and coat the noodles with the fiery sauce and stir it in. There has since been a 2x spicy of the same brand. Haven't tried... don't think I'd enjoy it. lol

This one by Paldo has more of a jalapeno kick to it. I'd say it's a 5-6 out of 10 on the spice level. This is less spicier then the Samyang, but taste-wise I like the Samyung. Hope that helps... report back of what you think! :D

Exfoliating is when you mechanically (like with your hand, a washcloth, a loofah, etc.) remove dead skin. This is fantastic for your head and body.

With the oil, after you shower and your hair is still a little damp, rub just a couple of drops between your hands to warm it up and then rub it into your hair and scalp. You don't need much at all. Because your hair is readjusting to a more natural state where it self-regulates its oils, it may be a little greasier at first than you want it to be, but it should adjust over time and you'll figure out how much or little oil is right to add back in. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I know far more people who have been surprised by how well it's worked for them than those who haven't.

When I first moved out here, because I didn't have any of the basics, I opted for the basic version at Red Cross. They left in a checklist of items in there as well as items that you might want to add to personalize it, which I did. That is more of a single person kit though, so later when I moved, we got this 4 Person Kit. I forget which version of the cat one, but we have that one as well.

I'd say, before committing to the kits, first check against what you already have. In both situations, it was due to a large move that we realized we couldn't find everything or it would need to be purchased again which meant that it worked out financially to get the kit instead. Here's a good list to start with.

Amazon Prime is pretty reliable, if you can get an item that's still in stock. I found an example here that will arrive by Friday. Walgreens will definitely have Christmas lights and stockings.

There will be an ethernet cable coming out of your wall. You plug it into your router. Then you can plug your PC directly into the router or just use wifi or both. Way easier than Comcast, way cheaper, way faster, especially the upload speed. Personally, I'm using this router https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DIR-879-AC1900-Wi-Fi-Router/dp/B00PVDO8YK/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1494651376&sr=1-7&keywords=dlink+router which looks kinda like a space ship that's why I bought it :) For basic needs - couldn't be better.

Yep, I have a pair of Shure SE215s and they work great.
