Interesting post. Thanks. I have come to appreciate the realities of not being able to bump-bump-bump the room with speakers for mixing. There are so many ways to mix. There is one guy who is very successful, kind of an alt rock guy (pardon I do not have his name), and he uses speakers and mixes at, like, 70dB, which if you ever use a handheld dB meter, that is the most quiet I have ever heard anyone mixing, yet his stuff sounds great, it really does.
Re your work, I am glad you are happy with it. For me to have an opinion I would have to hear it, but I have less opinions these days. There is no end to it, when I hear a mix I am really hearing the source instruments, is how I hear it, and then "Well! What are the source instruments?!" blah bleh blah. :-)
edit: I just don't like things on my head, at least around my ears. But sounds nice to have the get-away world, shut the door on the rest of it, so to speak. I have my headphones right here. Says HM5 on them. I think they've been modified. They were a gift from friend whose brother is some headphone nut all into it. They're not bad, I am not compelled to change them out for something else. I should read the reviews. But I'm just not drawn to them. I do not associate headphones with good things, and I do not trust what I hear with them. edit: PS I've got pretty good speakers, so there's that. I really like my speakers and spent a long road of effort to get to them. I hear detail, even freq response, and I like them. -I guess I am so used to textile dome tweeters, it is a home territory for me, of sorts.
Sorry I was being overdramatic haha. I still love music, it just takes a really phenomenal band or artist for me to sit and take it all in without analyzing every aspect of it. I have to use the "Sorry, I've pretty much ruined..." punchline anytime I go see a show with non-musician folks and I start tearing the show apart as soon as it's over. They always think it's funny and it's a reminder to myself that what I'm passionate about may be ruining the experience for them.
I actually really enjoy figuring out what I'm going to steal for my own show, I see it as important research! But I do wonder what it would be like to go see some of my favorite bands without knowing anything about music.
I've also "ruined" beer (I homebrew) and movies (I've scored some films and learned too much about movie making) as well hahaha.
Yes that's her. Her book is "Recording Unhinged" for those interested :

And yeah, she completely rocks.
You need to buy a Darth Vadar Pez dispenser.
They're only $10
actual bass drop prevention
Yep it's not pro gear, but I always have one of these with me in my travels. I think they cost $10. I repeatedly find people with problems that I can improve greatly by throwing one of these at it. I just give them away.
Edit: My bad, they're $8 on amazon prime. http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PDC21-Instrument-Balanced-Unbalanced/product-reviews/B0027V760M
