> how many volumes does the anime adapt

Questions 2.3 and 2.4 of our FAQ have you covered. (Note that 2.4 also includes a link to a guide I wrote going over the major adaptation changes, of which there are a lot. I know the FAQ already says this, but I can't emphasize this enough: yes, the anime covers less than a fifth of the source material, and yes you really should start reading the novels from the beginning because the changes will confuse you if you try to jump in at volume 5).

Edit: I just realized that you may have forgotten about regionlocking - please note that the UK releases are region B/2. (Or maybe you already dismissed the UK releases on account of regional differences?)

> Japanese Blu-Ray

Wouldn't it be a lot easier if you ordered the UK Blu-Ray? Anime Ltd's release, I mean. The Collector's Edition Blu-Ray Set I bought in January 2016 (one month before the license expiry) is apparently £300 now I'm so glad I bought it before February but the standard Blu-Ray edition is a much more affordable £30. Just like the collector's edition, it has English subtitles.

For the record, the Japanese Blu-Ray edition that was released on January 26, 2011 seems to have been priced around $300 at the time of its release, and after poking around it appears that the UK Collector's Edition is basically the JP release but in English (I recognize the booklet the unboxer has; it looks just like the English version that came with mine). The JP edition actually included Funi's dub at the time of its release, which is neat. When I eventually make a Home Releases page for the wiki (Wikia wiki, not subreddit wiki), I'll make sure to research/include subtitles for reference purposes. Thanks for reminding me about that.

The UK version is likely your best bet assuming you can play B/2 region DVDs/BDs; I need to go recheck the specs for the Black Box release (aka French release) before I can comment on it, but I think it only has French subtitles.

Edit x2: Yep, the French BD edition has French subtitles, with the PILON dub and original Japanese as audio tracks.

So, a basic rundown.

The novel series currently spans 22 volumes, with a 23rd coming in.... sometime in the future, who knows. After that, we expect at least one more, maybe more.

In english, the novels are officially at Volume 10, which you can see at the right of the reddit page: "1934 Peter Pan in Chains: Finale", and each novel in English has about 4 months between each release. You can buy them off Yen Press, I think the most common resource is Amazon. Personally, however, I use the digital store BookWalker for most LN and manga related stuff, so that's an alternative.

If you're curious about the new content you'll be seeing and such, just as an fyi, the anime adapted the first 4 volumes of the series into the 13 episode run of the show, and it also adapted a short story (which eventually became Volume 14 afterwards) into the 3 special episodes at the end of the series.

While you can technically skip the first 3 volumes of the books, I would recommend against it just so you can have a better perspective on the canon of the books and how they differ from the novels, since some of those minor changes will confuse you in later novels. Additionally, Volume 4 was only partially adapted, and there's many more things left unseen from it in the anime, so that's more reason to start from the beginning.

Last point, there's a lot of just random side content that is apparently canon in one way or another. It's probably best to look into those once you're a few volumes into the book series, I would say, so for now, stick to the books.
