I recently bought my first bass, a Fender Standard Jass Bass. I think the thing looks awesome, but I kind of wanted to customize it, and I thought the white pickguard was a little boring. A while ago I saw a strat with a green pickguard on r/guitar, so I searched on amazon and found some cheap replacements in many colors for $8. Ordered the green and it fit great. It came with shorter screws, as the pickguard isn't as thick as the original. But, I think it looks awesome. What do you guys think?

Not sure why the thumbnail is an error message, hmm.

I have a few coffee table type books like this. For fender stuff the fender bass illustrated history is a good one. Goes through all the design changes and such up until the early 2000s.

This book has several different editions, I have the one with an Alembic on the cover, I think this is a newer update, but it’s a more general history of bass designs.

For rickenbacker specifically this one is good.

I don’t know about a book but for Gibson the flyguitars website is a great resource.

Not basses specifically, but Greg Hopkins ampeg history book is another good one. Only goes up to the mid/late-90s SLM era though.

Such a good call with Jaco. His how-to DVD is legit, ever see it? I'd highly recommend it. I barely practiced any of the scales (which is a shame) but it was fun to watch him and the jams.

Edit: Don't get me wrong McCartney is a boss as well but they're two different planes of existence know what I mean?

Short answer: Practice.

Not so short one: Practice. Practice. Practice.

The Spider exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6qAay10W8g

There are like a trillion variations for The Spider, but that'll give you an idea. That kind of exercises are great for training fingers, just make sure to practice them slowly (with a metronome, dammit) and to avoid taking your fingers off the fingerboard once you fret the next note on a string (that will avoid two things: flying fingers and that karate chop thingy you mentioned). Notice how the guy in the vid is fingering them.

I also recommend the Bass Fitness book for training those fingers.

I really like it. It’s not my highest end bass, but it’s my only 5-string. It’s a heavy fucker, but Schecter did a great job beefing up the hardware by cutting corners on the aesthetics. I think it looks cooler that way anyways. The three band EQ is so nice that it’s now almost a hard requirement for any new bass I buy.

One thing about it, you have to get Ernie Ball 5-String Super-Long Scale strings or equivalent “super long scale” strings if you want the strings to go through the body since the neck is incredibly long. They’re fairly hard to find. Bought a really nice set of strings when I first got the bass and discovered that little nugget the hard way. I do really love that the bass has two full octaves for each string, though.

Be prepared for sore fingers, peeling and possibly blisters. I also recommend getting a D'Addario finger exerciser (primarily for your fretting hand). When I got one, within a week I noticed my fretting skills on my ring finger and pinky vastly improved.

I concur with everyone else as far as learning a couple core songs and get into that groove. After some time, you will start hitting the pocket on them.

Strongly recommend getting Rocksmith 2014 as well. It really helps quite a bit for beginners. You can get it for gaming consoles and PC but the PC handles the audio much better without the issues of lag like the console do.

Here is a the link for the finger exerciser.

Hopefully this helps:

You are gonna need some form of Soundcard/Audio Interface. This is the one I have and it has served me very well: https://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Studio-Interface-Recording/dp/B01E6T50BO/ref=sr_1_6?crid=450X1QB48N3T&keywords=focusrite+scarlett+2i2&qid=1567064239&s=gateway&sprefix=Focu%2Caps%2C323&sr=8-6 If you are on a budget, there are definitely cheaper options, so if you are looking for something cheaper, that link should give you a BASSline of what to look at. (Get it? ha)

In terms of software, I would personally go with Pro Tools. Its what most of the Music Industry uses to record/edit songs and whatnot: https://www.avid.com/pro-tools-first This is a free version, so it does not have many features, but if you are trying to just throw some simple songs together, or just record yourself playing, this is a perfect option.

Keep Rockin and Rollin my dude!

The proper glue is 7 dollars and has enough glue to last you indefinitely for your music maint needs.
It is actually cheaper than most super glues.

I don't advise using super glue. My friends have toasted enough necks by their nuts because they super glued their nuts.

I have one like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/amPlug2-AP2-BS-Headphone-Amplifier-Rhythms/dp/B00NAUKJTY/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=vox+amplug+bass&qid=1569920855&sr=8-2

It has a line input so I can connect an ipod to it, as well as headphones, and play along without anyone hearing me!

u/yayaja67 · 2 pointsr/BassGuitar

This was my first bass: https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Guitar-Starter-Beginner-Package/dp/B003GWQJUE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496162154&sr=8-1&keywords=davison+bass+guitar

They don't come much cheaper than this, and it was actually pretty decent. I got a good year out of it before I out grew it and upgraded to a Squier. I still use the amp it came with.
