Well, now that I am a moderator on this sub, I am a bit reluctant to make any recommendations because I do not want to appear as being biased.

With that being said, when my moustache was getting long enough to start getting in my mouth, I found a stronger hold wax was best; this is what I used. As my moustache got longer, I found less of a hold was necessary and this is what I use now. As far as beard oil goes, there are many good ones out there; my favorite is this one.

Kent combs are great if you have a short or straight beard. Mine is kind of long and its curly so unless im using a hair dryer i cant get even a wide tooth kent (i have a 12T) through my beard. I do use this for my mustache though.

I personally use a Wet Brush and boar bristle brush on the main beard and the kent comb on my mustache.

If you are looking for a pocket comb and have a thick/course beard, this is as good as it gets:

I generally dont carry a comb on me these days because my beard is a little longer, but i needed one all the time in the early stages and this one is great.

your best chance is using beard oil, and brush it out daily to make sure the product is well distributed.

The beard oil cleanses your face from dead skin cells that might be blocking the pores and hair follicles.

With that and time, your gaps should be able to fill in. Beard hair grows in layers. Good luck

check out HiLee on Amazon. They offer a lot of natural, organic and cruelty-free options for the bearded man.

I bought the Wahl Peanut a few years ago and I love it. I tried 3 different battery operated trimmers previously, and they all ended up dying. I would not recommend a battery operated trimmer unless you like replacing your trimmer every year.

I chose the Peanut because it’s what I’ve seen in professional barbershops. It’s my favorite and I use it to keep my Paul Krugman look going.

I wash my beard with pine tar soap. It works pretty well and prevents itching. I also use a beard oil composed of jojoba and Argan oils. It's the only one I've found that doesn't make me break out, has no scent, and works overall the best. Link to what I use.

I have relatively think beard hair and the battery options just weren't cutting it - pun intended.

Check out the Whal Peanut - https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Clipper-Trimmer-8655-200/dp/B001FDKGIW

  • small and easy to handle with both hands (right hand to left no problem)
  • it will cut through my thick beard in one pass - my battery powered Phillips used to get bogged down and would take several (read 10+) to get it looking clean. This is one pass and done.
  • packaging claims its commercial grade. My barber has one so n = at least 1.
  • smaller cutting head really isn't that big of a deal for me. It allows for some precision even.

Only con is the lack of attachments. It comes with 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" guards and I don't see anything other than those sizes for the Peanut on Amazon. If you are looking to use this on your head, definitely consider this first.

If you have time, I'd look for a leave in conditioner meant for african hair or coarse curly hair. Leave it in for 10 mins and then rinse. If you don't have time in the morning, maybe make it an evening treatment. I noticed you said no oil - what about shea? It's a butter and considered noncomedogenic so it shouldn't cause acne. Cantu makes a leave in conditioner with shea (also one in coconut that looks almost the same, so look for the one that says Shea) and you'll find it in the ethnic section of the shampoo aisle at Walgreens. It's a good sized container that will last you the year.

There are other options too, but I dont remember them off the top of my head rn. I have curly hair that is very picky so I've gone through a lot of products in my life to find works. So feel free to msg me if that one doesn't work for whatever reason. My boyfriend makes his own beard conditioner but its an elixer of a bunch of oils so that wont work for you. A lot of commercial beard conditioners are oil based as well unfortunately.

I've used a lot of different brands, some very pricey, but I just found this Honest Amish Premium oil - and love it! $20 for 2 ounce bottle.

They suuuuuck. I have something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Straightening-GLAMFIELDS-Straightener-Anti-scald-Temperature/dp/B07DCP4CLR/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=heated+brush&qid=1568726268&s=gateway&smid=A3L2W1AP6BSHXS&sr=8-7 That I paid $16 that works great. I turn it on. Jump in the shower. Get out, I just brush out my beard with a different pointed brush, then use this after the show to brush it down.

I'm using beard balm by the B.I.G company. Got it on Amazon. I don't find it shines too much and keeps it pretty in shape. I do have a shorter beard though so it may differ for longer beards. They have other products as well.

Comb your bear all you like, it needs as much attention as your beard.

On a different note, I've just bought this beard brush on Amazon.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll be back with beard updates!

I'm not the world's greatest connoisseur of beard oil, but this stuff has done the trick for me and it smells great.

u/MadSc13ntist · 2 pointsr/BeardTalk

I usually tend to my moustache with a small moustache comb but really at most only once in the morning or after a shower. My moustache is long enough to generally use my hands to groom it. My beard however, gets windblown, slept on or generally more tousled over the course of a day and if left to its own devices I would look a touch more "natural" than I am shooting for.

My frustrations with my current pocket comb stem largely from the idea that I almost never use the finer half and though I am typically pretty good about covering the teeth of the finer toothed half with a finger while combing, occasionally some hair makes it's way in and I get a hair pull or worse, a break. 99.999% of the time that I reach into my pocket for my comb (which for posterity is more than a few times a day) it is for the wide side to groom my beard.

The "finger-trick" to prevent pulls/breaks makes combing (for me) more cumbersome than it needs to be. This all being said, if I needed my go-to comb to have fine teeth too I might consider a double sided horn comb or something like an ego comb, etc.

u/fuckingnihilists · 2 pointsr/BeardTalk

Neat. I use a comb style diffuser on a hairdryer to straighten my beard. It works all right, but it's pretty awkward.

This brush dryer way cheaper on Amazon, though. Assuming you're not spamming your own dropship crap link, you might want to consider updating your post with the generic Amazon link!

Look for anti-dandruff shampoo, like Head and Shoulders, or something like T-Gel.

Also, look into one of the many beard oils. Check out /r/beardoil

this is what I got over a year ago, it's perfect. It does the job and is very sturdy.

You could handcraft a beard oil for him, it's fairly easy. Start with a 1-2 oz bottle with a dropper fill most of the way with jojoba oil and add 10-20 drops of essential oil for scent.
I found everything at a local organic grocery store.
