Regarding residue or damage, it depends on the material and tightness of the rubber bands. I've seen card edges squeezed or a film left behind, especially in high heat areas.
But yeah I very much dislike baggies myself, because of how inefficient they are space-wise. Vinyl tape is great because it doesn't use an adhesive, it just sticks to itself. Because of this you need to cut a slightly longer piece (I use ~1.5x around the stack width) but the tape is reusable.
This is the kind I use. I've wrapped cards for around 30-40 games with my original roll, including games like Guards of Atlantis where there are 10 heroes and each stack is individually wrapped, so it lasts a pretty long time.

I wanted to add. I just checked Amazon. I was able to find Chinese luck coins in 3 distinct colors at very reasonable prices.
Silver here was the hardest to find. The rest is an easy search.
I bought enough for multiple games, 200 or more of each and paid $47 total. You can get 100 coins for around $10 shipped.
