I use Brodart and have never used tape, a good bone folder is all you need to cover the DJ safely.
I guess I wouldn't risk tape since I can't imagine the benefit, but to each their own.

Perhaps try absorene? It's the gray squishy rubber erasers that art students use for sketching. You should be able to find some for cheap and in smaller quantities at an art supply retailer.

If the book has a dust cover, you can always fashion a secondary cover to be inserted underneath it and have it 'peak out' on the front board/cover when you open the book. Alternatively, if it doesn't have a dust cover, you can purchase archival dust covers and simply attach the message on the inside flap. Other than that, I'd worry that any adhesive would be potentially damaging should anyone want to remove it in the future. Often times the glue will react with the fibres over extended periods of time and create an almost permanent bond.

Document repair tape ...'archival tape' is reversible. it is not diminishing the value unless you are using it wrong. When you do a repair you are trying to stop a bad thing from becoming worse.

Not all books are WORTH the tissue/paste solution.
