There are several travel guides for Brooklyn now. The Brooklyn Experience is pretty good.
I'm about to install on a first floor as well. I think bracing the sliding window with 2 pieces of good wood should be enough to make it impossible to push through without breaking the window. Window alarms can also help deter people.

Mosquitos get me as soon as I open the door, so I always have to wear OFF! I use table lanterns with Tiki Bitefighter oil & it seems to help guests.
I get nearly 35 channels in Bay Ridge. Get a decent antennae and point it at the empire state. You should definitely get all the networks and PBS from Coney.
