you really dont even need to spend $500 for a laptop that will serve those purposes. I'll link a few on Amazon.

This laptop is $400. It runs Windows 10, 8GB of Ram, meaning he would be able to have many tabs open, that sort of thing. And it has 1 Terabyte of storage, meaning 1024GB. He can basically download all he wants, movies, music and whatnot, it has plenty of space for all that. https://www.amazon.com/HP-15-6-inch-Dual-Core-MaxxAudio-Bluetooth/dp/B07QKWTZ4B/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=laptop+500gb+8gb+ram&qid=1574110513&sr=8-4

This laptop is about $350 and its pretty similar, It has less storage. It has 512GB but it has a SSD, its basically a faster loading hard drive, so if you think he isnt going to go download happy this one would work well for him, especially being able to load up downloaded programs and media just a little bit faster with potential for better download speeds. If he isn't going to go crazy with downloads this would be a good bet. https://www.amazon.com/Flagship-Lenovo-A12-9720P-802-11ac-Bluetooth/dp/B07KMBZ9NP/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=laptop+500gb+8gb+ram&qid=1574110759&sr=8-7

This laptop has 16GB of ram which is very good for work use, its about $270 such as having many programs and chrome tabs open. Although it has 16GB of ram it has a regular hard drive with 320GB, not an SSD. So i guess it all depends what you think would be best. It has a very weak CPU meaning that i the off chance your dad would wanna play a game, he probably wouldn't be able to unless if he used a streaming service. https://www.amazon.com/HP-EliteBook-9470M-Professional-Refurbished/dp/B01M4N4Y6W/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=laptop+16gb+ram&qid=1574110996&sr=8-3

I'll give you some pointers in case if you can't use Amazon, figure out which laptop you think might be best suited, look at all the other comments to and make some comparisons. If you think your dad would want to download a lot, and by a lot i mean a lot of media such as movies, photos and music than look for laptops with a high storage. If you think he's going to be only working and needing a few programs and lots of tabs, maybe music or youtube playing as well maybe look for something with a high amount of ram, 8GB is good but 16GB would be a difference that's worthwhile. If you think I he wants it all try to find a balance, look for a laptop with 16GB of ram and a 500GB at least and if you can an SSD instead of a hard drive.

Don't be afraid to ask Bestbuy or any store that sells laptops. Ask if they have a laptop with a good amount of ram, maybe an SSD. Maybe let them know if you don't fully understand how it works. Try not to cheap out though because that employee might just want to make the sale instead of helping you entirely, who knows. If you are considering buying a laptop somewhere, look it up online first, watch a review on youtube. Especially if you're uncertain about something, don't wing it unless if you have to. Goodluck dude and if you have any questions you can reply or PM me and i can help further.

This was my response before

You clearly underestimate how long 2 hours really last. If you're playing a game, getting really pissed off and not enjoying your time after 1 hour, it would be reasonable to not want to own the game anymore. You mentioned PC games running worse than consoles. Even if that were true, you could just refund the game until the company optimizes it much better (which is what people did when Arkham Knight came out; and W.B Games actually listened to them)

I'm sorry I didn't cite my sources last time. So I'll do it this time https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/10/game-stop-shares-fall-after-second-quarter-profit-and-revenue-miss.html https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/09/10/gamestop-store-closings-2019-retailer-closing-up-200-stores/2279343001/ https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/06/08/how-much-did-gamestops-sales-fall.aspx

"Where are these companies that make PCs that will stomp console? Never mind it’s in fantasy land" I dunno man. NZXT BLD and OriginPC seem pretty real. Also a prebuilt PC with an RX 580 and a Ryzen 7 2700 CPU only costs about $650 https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Desktop-Processor-Graphics/dp/B07Q3G3B67/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=gaming+PC&qid=1568421808&s=gateway&sr=8-6

Oh I can't ever accept that I'm wrong? I'm sorry, I guess the word objective just completely disappeared from the english dictionary. I guess Better Framerats, Graphics, Upgrade-able hardware, free online, convenience, options, freedoms don't exist to you. Also, don't compare me to liberals. The liberals you're thinking of are completely closed minded.

Okay so the quick answer , YES, YES IT IS.

Now the detailed one.

"building outside" is as simple (just hear me out.) as taking the motherboard out of the box, wearing [ESD Gloves] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DP6RQYI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) take the board out of the bag, and close the mobo box after taking out SATA cables inside the box, folding the box back up, and placing the mobo ontop of the box.

Take the cpu socket and push down the retention arm, swing it out, and lift it back so you can put the CPU in., take the CPU out of the box, and make sure the triangle on the CPU matches the CPU on the mobo and gently line it up with the socket, if it's intel, just let it come out of the hand atop the board, if AMD, line up the pinholes.

Take the RAM, make sure t he notch on the DIMM Slot lines up with the stick of RAM and push down until the clips both snap in place making sure you push on both sides to evenly force it.

Take the PSU out of the box, grab the 24pin cable (it's the big cable.) and plug the sides into the PSU if it's modular and into the 24pin spot on the mobo (it's the big spot) and if you have a mobo with extra power needed, take the EPS cables (they are 2x2 with a total of 4 pins, or sometimes 2 2x2's that will go together, if it is a cord with 2 2x2's and your mobo only has 1 2x2 for extra power, don't fret, just plug in one.) and plug them in if neccasary, and turn it on., if it POST's than turn it off immediately, if you can't turn it on, try plugging in the power switch front panel connectors to the front panel i/o spot on the mobo and pushing the power button on the case., it should b e able to boot if down correctly.

Anyways I went super detailed however the realistic process of this is maybe only 10-15 minutes to test the RAM/CPU/MOBO and you don't need to take stuff apart to then "build it again" the only other things you do really is just make sure you have the standoffs installed, put the mobo in the case, screw it to the standoffs, wire up the rest of the front I/O of the case, unplug the PSU and mount it (with fan inside case if you will put PC on the ground or if you don't have a hole for the PSU to blow/suck air in/to, and fan down towards outside of case if it can breath) put on the CPU cooler, put in the GPU if you have one, put in the HDD/SSD/ODD if you have them, plug in the fans, run power to GPU and plug them to the mobo again, and boom, down, just need to install windows now.

It's not so much building it twice, it's testing/building on the mobo one time, then just putting it in place, mind you if you have gpu you could slot that when "building outside" but that just means might need a separate PSU cable for it, and the whole point of building outside is to test, if the screen is black when the HDMI/DP cord is plugged into the vid card, you know it's the vid card, not much to guess there. anyways.. if you want you could just unscrew the expansion slot covers you need to remove, install stand-offs, install HDD/SDD/ODD's into their drive cages, unscrew the back of the PSU cover if you have one on your case .. maybe route your fans ahead of time even?? .. either way my point being is that when you are testing out of box, you can do the case stuff at the same time.. multi-tasking ftw.

What GPU are you using ? If you want better performance, the GPU is going to have a greater impact. If you don't have a good GPU, the GeForce GTX 1050ti is great and no other part should bottleneck it. If you do have a good GPU maybe your problem is not the CPU but RAM. How much/ How fast is your RAM ? The CPU is not that bad and other parts could be the issue. If its confirmed that the CPU needs to be upgraded.

The exact name of the Motherboard would also help as some chipsets may need a BIOS update for compatability for a certain CPU

One CPU i found is the i5-4690k

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i5-4460-1150-BX80646I54460/dp/B00JIJUBAS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1536427500&sr=8-2&keywords=i5-4690K

190 USD, 4cores 4threads 3,5GHz-3,9GHz in turbo. Seems pretty solid.

I would go with the Ryzen 1600. It comes with an okay stock cooler for just 200 dollars. Look up "B350 Ryzen" and you will find lots of motherboards that are cheaper than motherboards that use Coffeelake CPUs. Also, "IMO" i think that this case looks better.

I know Computer hardware is pretty expensive rn but newegg is having some great bundle deals! I recommend trying to get a little bit faster ram because it is not that much more expensive over lower clocked ram.

I hoped this helped you. Sorry it looks so messy, I was in a rush trying to put this together. Happy PC building!

Thanks everyone for your replies,

I'm thinking of going with the 1600X with the g.skill flare 2400mhz ram.

since it does not come with a cooler I was thinking of going with a Corsair Hydro ( https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Hydro-Performance-Liquid-Cooler/dp/B00A0HZMGA/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1496802424&sr=1-2&keywords=corsair+hydro+series ). The Gigabyte GA 350 does not appear to have a VGA connector which is extremely important to me or at least two HDMI connectors for my dual monitor setup ( I should have caught that earlier, lol my bad ). Both monitors are old and are VGA only, one currently is using an HDMI to VGA adapter. I do like the m.2 slot for upgradeability.

Edit: now that I think about it the 1600 would be significantly cheaper and with the same thread/core count would that not result in much of a difference?? ( http://www.techspot.com/article/1381-ryzen-1600x-vs-1600/ ). The cheaper price and included cooler would allow me to also go for other things such as a tp-link av200 which can be beneficial for me. The higher frequency RAM is also cool (Even though as far as I know it does not result in much of a performance difference). I do have a couple of questions though.

  • Would the higher frequency RAM cause problems with installation/setup or anything like that?
  • Would the 1600 be enough to run Blender/EU4/Bad Company 2 reliably well on decent settings?

As far as the whole where you can take it to get it built, I do want to say this again, please just look at videos done by people like LinusTechTips BitWit and PaulsHardware to see build videos as a refresher and don't forget to get yourself some ESD Gloves like these [ESD Gloves] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DP6RQYI/) if you do build yourself.

If you REALLY don't trust yourself even with prevention and refreshers than I'd advise a mom and pop PC place since they might do it free to "help" and/or "teach" since it's your first time, the only other place i can think of would be Best Buy but last I checked they charge close to 100$ for hardware installation/software installation/building I believe, and really, 99$ is overpriced for them to have the fun of playing legos.

Two real choices come to mind here:

This is a surprisingly good offering from Redragon, right around $35. They aren't Cherry MX switches so the quality control isn't going to be as good on them, but getting Cherry switches below $50 is difficult as it is.

Here's a pretty comparable choice from EagleTec. Again, build quality and consistency will be somewhat lacking, but that's kinda what you get from budget computer hardware in general. This particular one is just a little bit more than $40, but finding mechanical keyboards at that exact price point is somewhat difficult as it is.

I don't have any personal experience with either of these keyboards, and I'm not entirely sure about the reputability of either Redragon or EagleTec, but the reviews on both products are good, and Amazon has a pretty decent return policy just in case the product just craps out on you.

First of all, why would you choose the 4c/4t option instead of 6c/12t option? And why go for 2016 tech when 2017 has 7600K?

Furthermore, you want to cheap out on your case while still being able to overclock? Go Ryzen, they have $90 ATX OC-Ready motherboards.

my child this is a great mouse

Above has a great sensor, RGB, and is very cheap.

Over on mechanicalkeyboards.com , you can get a Ducky Shine 6 with PBT keycaps in: Cherry MX Brown, Blue, Red, an dSpeed/Silver switches, for $10 less than BW v2. If you need an even lower price, check out K70 RGB and Strafe series from Corsair. Not the best, but the cheapest RGB Cherry mechs you can find on the market. I forgot, they are the cheapest fullsized keyboard.

For the PSU, I would get a B3 instead. Why? It's like BQ but it's fully modular. I realize that BQ has a $10 rebate. But if there was no rebate, B3 all the way.

Cryorig H7 is shadowed by Hyper 212 EVO, but Cryorig H7 is much better. It's a nice CPU cooler.

I also chose a cheaper memory kit.

Well, that's funny! I have a 1080p 24 inch monitor under $175! It works great! :D

I mean most budget laptops do not have the best graphics cards in them. The Helios laptop is a great value but it's outside your budget
This laptop is prob the best bang for your buck you can get

If your budget is 80 per item id suggest the G502 and the drevo tryfing v2 if your budget is 80 Razer Naga Hex V2 - Ergonomic MOBA and this https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-KUMARA-Backlit-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B016MAK38U?th=1&psc=1
