Websites (Most are not active):

  • Inside the Pylon - Videos may not load embedded, but you can copy the url. Pretty good look at base plays, position responsibilities, and other terms you run into.
  • Breakdown Sports another place for looking at the above, less available though covered deeply. See article on Cover 1 for example.
  • Football Study Hall More on the statistics side of football (old stomping ground of Bill Connelly), a bit more all over the place.
  • Dan Casey's Twitter If you want to see clips of fun and interesting plays past and present, he's a good'un.
  • Playbooks - Historic coaches' playbooks. You can get a pretty good understanding of things like read progression and play goals from these, as well as what the purpose of each player on the field for each play by reading through some of these.

    ---
Books: These are the books most people recommend starting from.

  1. David Seigerman's Take Your Eye Off the Ball This is a really good book for understanding the game holistically. From positions to managing a season to how you can pay attention to a play, a drive, and a game.
  2. Chris B. Brown's The Essential Smart Football and The Art of Smart Football (read in order of printing) Fantastic book set for anyone ready to dive a deeper into how the game has and could develop. Seeing everyone raving about the wildcat is always a chuckle though.
  • Tim Layden's Blood, Sweat & Chalk. Definitely worth the the purchase. Would recommend the above first, but this is a great go for the stories behind the plays. How they came to be and why.

The guy who wrote the biography about Saban followed Moglia's journey as it happened from TD Ameritrade to Coastal. It's a good read. He spent some time at Nebraska as essentially an unpaid intern, then coached the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL, and then found an AD willing to take a chance and it has worked out beautifully for all parties.

After I read the book I went looking and found a Coastal fan board that happened to have had coach search threads and a live thread for his announcement and first press conference. It was entertaining because they were getting this coach no one had heard of. Then they found out he was a retired CEO a few kind of flipped out. But then something awesome happened. At Moglia's first presser he wins them all over. He's just such an engaging man that it is hard not to like him.

I've been keeping tabs on them ever since. Watched what few games I've been able to. Excited about them being Sunbelt because that will increase my chances to see them play.

>as honestly the only 3 who really "deserve" as shot based on resume are Oregon, Bama, and FSU, leaving one of them out would be a big deal, having ohio st in there is just a bonus.

Ah, so it's a "bonus" to have a team in there that doesn't "deserve" to be? Why wouldn't it be a "bonus" to have even more?

>I don't think anyone really agrees that a 16 team playoff is the way to go, and you obviously believe it is.

These guys do. Lots of people do.

>Why do we not have a 32 team playoff though? How many teams does there need to be.

There need to be ten plus however many independent teams there are. That's the only way to guarantee that every team can control their own path. But realistically, people will want at-large teams and not all independents will be successful enough to earn a spot, so 16 is a reasonable number to include every team that people WANT to see AND every team that has earned it through winning their conference.

So don't waste my time arguing 32- and 64-team formats when I'm not arguing for them. You seem to think that I want 16 just because it's more, but I have a reason for that number and I have told you what it is many, many times.

>and honestly the teams that win the championships in the G5 are very often garbage

This isn't about your opinion. This is about what's fair. They earned a shot by winning their conference. If they're not good enough, they'll lose and no harm was done. If they win, then you must have been wrong about them and it's a good thing we didn't exclude them.

Anybody interested in reading about Bear Bryant ought to check out The Last Coach: A Life of Paul "Bear" Bryant by Allen Barra. It was recommended to me by a Bama fan. Despite the fact that I'm both a Longhorn and an Auburn fan, it was one of the best books I've read. What he did for college football and what he did at Alabama is pretty amazing and definitely made for an interesting read.

Ohio State vs Michigan, commonly known as "The Game".

One of the longest played rivalry games in college football, The Game features two of the most successful teams in CFB history, with the two accounting for a combined 10 Heisman trophies, 19 claimed national championships and 78 (!) Big Ten championships.

  • First played in 1897, Michigan dominated the early years of the rivalry, going 12-0-2 until the series was put on hold for five years upon Ohio State joining the Big Ten (then known as the Western Conference), whom Michigan had previously left.

  • Once the series was resumed in 1918 (when Michigan rejoined the Big Ten), The Game was much more equal, as evidenced by Ohio State's slight lead of 47-46-4 in Big Ten conference play.

Over the years, The Game has been extremely influential in deciding the conference and even national champion.

  • Since The Game was moved to the end of the regular season in 1935, it has been the de-facto Big Ten championship game 22 times (with the record between the two teams being an even 10-10-2 in those games), and has impacted the Big Ten championship a further 27 times (meaning that one of the teams had a chance to play spoiler).

  • On the national stage, Michigan has given Ohio State their only tie or loss of the season 6 different times, while the Buckeyes have prevented the Wolverines from having a perfect season 7 times.

Featuring such compelling subjects as Woody Hayes vs Bo Schembechler in the 10 Year War, the 2006 "Game of the Century", and an incredibly fierce (yet begrudgingly respectful) mutual hatred that can trace its genesis back to a war between the two states, the Ohio State-Michigan game has been the subject of numerous books and documentaries. Furthermore, The Game has been recognized by many as not only the greatest rivalry in college football, but as the greatest rivalry in all of North American sports.

Hey man, just jumping in the first chance I get. Here is how I would suggest formatting your video. And I saw someone suggested this and it is a wise investment for these types of videos. You should post another updated video for more feedback before contacting recruiters. Be sure to include information at the start of the video so recruiters know where you are from, it will help them understand why there isn't any game footage. Good luck!

Trust me, buy a smoker (highly recommend this https://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-16620-Kamado-Charcoal-Barbecue/dp/B00GJEPTJS unless you're a fancy pants who can afford the Big Green Egg) and master your craft. You will be loved by your meat eating friends.

It doesn't look like it's in print any more, but it's a fun read. He tells the story you just related in there. That's not the fun part, to say the least.

Thank you for sharing. That's a great story.

u/WitOfTheIrish · 3 pointsr/CFB

Add one of these (or these, if you're a round grill guy)to your tailgating equipment, and begin to understand the glory of grilled breakfast foods! Eggs, pancakes, bacon, hashbrowns - the world of deliciousness is your oyster my friend.

And the good lord saw fit to invent the bloody mary, irish coffee, and breakfast beer for a reason.

u/theglendon · 13 pointsr/CFB

The key to success with the always going on fourth is to let it influence 1st-3rd down calls. The Arkansas HS coach they referenced in the article almost always runs on third and long, defenses are still caught off guard by it and it sets him up with much more manageable fourth down conversions.

The best breakdown of his system is in the book Scorcasting, which I honestly can't recommend highly enough.

u/HarryEllis · 2 pointsr/CFB

Agreed. Scorecasting is a great book. Wertheim breaks down going for it in three bullets

  • Inside the opponent's 45 yard line facing anything less than fourth and eight
  • Inside the opponent's 33 yard line, they are better of going for it on anything less than fourth and 11
  • Regardless of field position, on anything less than fourth and five, teams are always better off going for it

I mean nobody likes losing... but yeah we have some bad apples... as does any fanbase. Our program and our fans are used to winning thanks to success throughout the 2000s. As a team, we've come close but haven't tasted a championship and as fans, we feel that our program has not gained the respect we believe we deserve. If you look at West Virginia as a state (I only went to WVU - wasn't born there) it is often stereotyped and ridiculed by people who have never even been there. There's a book that sums up the history of the program pretty well. One of the reasons fans are so down is because we saw this loss coming and know what the rest of the season could end up being.

u/moby323 · 4 pointsr/CFB

I’m posting this elsewhere too but just FYI I’ve been trying different type of personal fans to stay cool at games and I’ve finally found one that works well and it is this one OUTXE Necklace Fan 90° Rotating... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R7LQBLL?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Love that video. If you haven't, you should read, ["The 100 Yard War."] (http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/047173649X) Great book about the rivalry.

Also, [Natural Enemies] (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Enemies-Notre-Dame-Michigan-Football/dp/0836280725) goes over the Michigan-Notre Dame rivalry. It's a bit dated, but still a great read that starts at the beginning of each program's football team.

u/ecle · 15 pointsr/CFB

Not exactly what you asked for, but I got Keep Your Eyes Off the Ball off Amazon for just a few bucks a couple years ago, and it really helped me a lot with this very thing. The spiral bound "playbook edition" comes with a three hour DVD as well. The spiral version isn't dinky/flimsy so don't be scared.

Before that book, I never knew where I was supposed to be looking and missed out on a lot. Problem solved.

Edit to Add: There is an updated/newer version now, but Amazon reviewers are unclear about whether it has a DVD, if that matters to you--I think the book is pretty clear on its own.

u/relax_on_the_mat · 2 pointsr/CFB

It's a bit dated (1997), but Feinstein's Army/Navy book is pretty good.

u/SchrodingersGaren · 2 pointsr/CFB

It's not strictly CFB, but Essential Smart Football is really interesting from an X's and O's perspective.

One Night, Two teams It’s a great book with lots of cool stories of Bear and McKay. It gets a little repetitive because they interview people and ask the same questions but still really good

u/darkbear19 · 2 pointsr/CFB

Piggy Backing off this, his book The Essential Smart Football is a great way to learn also.

u/duffman13jws · 6 pointsr/CFB

Well, at least most of #3 is reusable from season to season. I'm in close to $400 on my tailgate gear, but I've put it together over several seasons. It's not too bad, you get a

  • Coleman Roadtrip XLE - $125 plus tax
  • Cosco folding table - $38 plus tax
  • Cooler - $30-40 for something decent by coleman or rubbermaid, $50 wth wheels
  • Flagpole - $35 plus another $30-50 for flags - it's a must so you can find your car more easily
  • Canopy - $80, I've been using this model for 4 years now with no issues.
  • Collapsible chairs, various utensils, canopy weights, containers, etc. that are essentially tailgate-only, maybe occasionally used for camping

Now, food and beer is another story - for 5 home games and a neutral site, I'd say we average $75-100 per game on refreshments. Craft beer costs money, and I only do frozen burgers and dogs 2 game per season; I usually barbecue a pork shoulder and ribs the other 3 and just reheat them on the grill top; the ribs add up quickly, and so do sides.

Next additions are some tailgate games - I'd like to build cornhole boards or maybe ladder ball, but i might need to buy a pickup to fit all this stuff. We're already to the point that I use a hitch-mounted cargo carrier on the wife's SUV since we can only put the 3rd row of seats down with 2 kids in car seats and a stroller taking up space in the trunk.

Bootlegger's Boy. Autobiography by Barry Switzer, pretty interesting.

I'm reading Meat Market right now. Very interesting read. If you haven't read it, it's about Orgeron's revitalization of the program. Written well.

u/pk3maross · 7 pointsr/CFB

First of all you could really benefit from one of these

WIZARD KICKING STIX FOOTBALL HOLDER. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000ASG52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_l4R6xbTCHG4AE

Youre probably shoving the ball into the ground which really isnt helping you with getting under the ball to get the height and distance you need.

u/Apep86 · 6 pointsr/CFB

As a side note to my rebuttal, I would like to recommend Death to the BCS by Dan Wetzel. It deals with a lot of your concerns and arguments, plus more.
