EDIT: Sorry, you asked about modern stuff. But still, I'll leave this up.

Hall of Fame defensive lineman Dan Hampton:

> I got a little girl. She's four years old. Ten years from now, when she asks me about the Chicago Bears, I'll tell her about a championship and I'll tell her about great teams and great teams and great coaches. And how great it was to be a part of it.

> But the first thing I tell her about is Walter Payton.

https://youtu.be/7rBkhnSIQt8?t=2360

Walter Payton is the greatest all-around football player of all time. He was number five on the NFL's list.

  • He broke Jim Brown's all-time rushing record. The current holder of the record, first ballot Hall of Famer, Emmitt Smith, regards Walter Payton as better than himself.
  • He was a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
  • The greatest nickname in NFL history: simply "Sweetness."
  • MVP and two-time offensive player of the year.
  • NFL's 75th Anniversary Team
  • "Give me the heart of Walter Payton. There's never been a greater heart." -JIM FREAKING BROWN
  • Seven time First-Team All-Pro. Seven.
  • The "Man of the Year" award is named after him. He is the only player whom other current NFL players wear a patch of during the season. Let that one sink in. Walter Payton is a patch now. He is essentially the "Logo," as Jerry West is for the NBA.
  • He could even play quarterback.
  • He could block. WATCH. THIS. BLOCK.
  • He made hill running famous, influencing generations of RBs after him, from Tiki Barber to LaDanian Tomlinson. (LT even created a hill for himself because of Walter.) Jerry Rice took this up as well.
  • He advocated a policy of Never Die Easy, refusing to make defensive players' lives easy by going out of bounds for them.
  • Seriously, watch him run.
  • Now watch this.
  • Now watch THIS.
  • He ran for 275 yards in one game. While sick with the flu. Before Jordan made the "flu game" famous.
  • Despite great personal anguish and hesitation about it, he did not make his disappointment about being shut out of the Superbowl without a touchdown (Ditka gave it to the Fridge instead) public.
  • The Patriots keying on Walter Payton and nothing else helped the Bears put up 46 points on the New England Patriots in the Superbowl.
  • When he was dying, he still appeared in advertisements for organ donation, despite the fact that organ donation would no longer help him. With some of his last time on Earth, he chose to spend it still helping others.
  • Walter Payton is so powerful that his force-ghost blocked a kick in a game against the Packers in the first game the Bears played after he died. This has been proven by eye-witness testimony. "Walter Payton picked me up in the air," insisted Robinson. "I can't jump that high.".

Yes, if you read the book "Sweetness," you will find Walter Payton more complicated than just being the great player, great teammate, and great person off the field.

But I challenge you to find a single player in NFL history who had a more powerful heart than Walter Payton, or so clearly symbolized the ferocious spirit for which his team is named.

Welcome to being a Bears fan. We are a founding franchise of the NFL, home of the greatest team in football history, and the only team for which its greatest icon played.

"The Bare Truth About Chicago's Brashest Bear: McMahon!" amirite? It's actually a pretty fun read and a nice perspective into their Super Bowl season.

I would highly recommend reading Trestman's book. It gives such a great insight into his philosophy on coaching his team as a whole. He's worked under some really great head coaches and learned a lot thru his years. It's ALL about team unity & truly making sure each player is pulling their weight.

His practices are run at a high intensity that wouldn't be much different from game time. He said he'll even sometimes pick a player each practice and run with them to the next station or whatever they're working on.

With every page turn I kept saying, "I'm so glad this guy is our coach."

Best book is “Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football”. Focuses on 85, but also provides a lot of history. Real fun read.

The 30 for 30 episode is streaming on Netflix. Not sure if it’s in the U.K. though. It’s amazing.

Hey - this is worked for my wife and I when we went to a sub-zero Bears/Packers game a few years back:

  1. Wrap one of these around your back and one around your chest. Keeping your chest warm circulates warmer blood and is very effective in staying toasty.

  2. Use handwarmers in your pockets. Not in your glove cavity, air circulation is minimal inside the glove so the handwarmers don't tend to warm as well.

  3. Stand on cardboard. This is a classic but also super effective.

Print and cut out a picture of Jay Cutler's head. Tape it to the bottom of his mouse over the laser thing.

Tell him you know how much he idolizes Clay Matthews and give him some blonde hair extensions. Optional: drug him and attach them while he's passed out. Note: may have side effects, including not being able to watch the game while in jail.

Record a sound file. The first few minutes should be silence, and then say "Go Bears!" in the mic, followed by a few minutes of silence, then do it again, rinse and repeat. After you've done this a few times, set this audio file as his Windows Startup sound (Google it, the process differs for each Windows version but it's very easy). When he turns on his computer everything will seem normal (well, his mouse won't work if you did step 1) but after a few minutes he'll get a nice little surprise. Works best if he has speakers plugged in.

Fart in a plastic bag. Sneak up behind him and, before he knows what's going on, open the bag right under his nostrils. Tell him you just came from the future where his team played like shit, and you brought him a taste.

Just make sure the jackets are windproof and you've got most of it covered. I'd also pickup a good pair of THICCCC socks, something like these from Carhartt will keep the toes nice and toasty.

Am I the only one of think our obsession with the 1985 Bears got old old...15 years ago?

That being said, if you are looking for a great book on the 1985 Bears I'd really recommend Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football.

It covers the founding and rise of the NFL (courtesy of Papa Bear), the 1985 Bears, and the ramifications of the ongoing concussion crisis. It's really a fantastic look at football, society, and the Chicago Bears.

It's not the cheapest, but it's the best I've ever used:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000UPO54M?pc_redir=1411834820&robot_redir=1

I bought this back in March and still have 3/4 left in the container, so considering how long it's lasted, it's really not that expensive. However, I don't use it every day and don't use very much when I do, but I bet Jay uses something of this quality.

Aww come on guys, these are great.

The Bears version of this one probably looks the best of all of the teams. My favorite design has got to be this one. I found these too but they almost look too normal to be an "ugly" sweater.

You can get cables to connect your vcr to your computer. Something like this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06X42H9VZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2

It would be a great way to preserve it.

u/buddybar · 1 pointr/CHIBears

Yep, that's the one. I actually got it off of Amazon though and I think it was a few bucks cheaper.

EDIT: here it is Same price, but free shipping.

Given your location, any antenna will work just fine. I've had great results with this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007MXZB2/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_5Ct3tb1E3H9SH

I got these Asics running shoes to support my beloved Bears.

u/Ethril · 2 pointsr/CHIBears

Are we sure it's not this James Brown?

Though I do feel awfully good.
