oh yeah, and if he slaps one of these on a flat part of his saw, it is great for training a person to get nice, level backcuts and pies.

https://www.amazon.com/Camco-25543-T-Level/dp/B000EDSSDO/ref=pd_lpo_263_bs_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=52VWB27B15RKJRTB0J66

I used one for log home construction, (cutting in windows) but decided to keep it on my saw because it was fun to check myself to see how level and square i could get my saw.

Pick up a mechanic's textbook. Or something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Two-Stroke-Engine-Repair-Maintenance-Dempsey/dp/0071625399#customerReviews

And be careful - there are a lot of well intention people out there who pro's classify as 'knows enough to be dangerous'. Take advice / learn from the wrong person and things will go wrong very quickly.

Cheers & gl :)

You could try this style. I've had good luck with the Oregon version of what you've got.

Yes. Just get one specified for stihl mount. Make sure that you get the correct pitch to match your sprocket. Either 3/8 or .325. Info should be on the current bar. Otherwise you'll have to look on the sprocket. Make sure to get a chain that is correct for the bar/sprocket. You'll need the pitch, gauge and number of links to be correct.
Oregon 105671 20-Inch Replacement Chainsaw Bar and Chain Combo for Stihl https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CFPXPU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BOIVDb6KR9SRT
This is a bar chain combo if your sprocket is .325. You could go for a shorter bar but I wouldn't go any longer than 20" on a 280.
Edit
That chain on that bar is a low kickback chain. Good for novice but less than stellar performance.

Tune the carb and it will run better. You will probably need the [splined carb adjustment tool] (https://www.amazon.com/Carburetor-Adjusting-Craftsman-Adjustment-530035560/dp/B00YZ4ZP84)

In my neck of the woods we call it a needle greaser, or needle tip greaser. I think those Oregon gadgets are so-so. I like to grease my nose bearing every other fuel tank. Different opinions exist about this. The best in my opinion: http://dualco-inc.com/products.push.html An adapter if you want: https://www.amazon.com/Plews-05-025-Needle-Nose-Adapter/dp/B000CCIM1A

You can get a special screwdriver to adjust the carb and fix that. It's like they come starved for gas from the factory or something. I opened mine up just slightly, and now I can leave it idling on the ground while I walk off for a few seconds and have it still be running when I come back.

I got this set from Amazon. For the Poulan, you only need the 21-teeth splined one, but the set was cheap enough that I got them all in case other engines I come across uses one of the other styles.

Could you give me a link? I'm on pfred's site but don't see them.

Edit: found it, and ordered one.
