I bought this vacuum. It has 100% been the best purchase I have made for cleaning. My boyfriend is very allergic to cats, and I have two of them. Like other people say, keep up with the grooming of your pets, but this vacuum is great because it also has a built in HEPA filter. I vacuum twice a week and have HEPA air filters, and that seems to take care of it. Let me know if you have any questions

I've had this vacuum since November and it has held up excellently so far.

Just brushed out our dog with this. Loved it, he has long hair and it did the trick. (Labradoodle)

I LOVE our hand vacuum. I get annoyed with dusting things that don’t really do the trick because I can still see things floating around. But I really see things get sucked with this guy.

Third the roomba suggestion. I forget the brand we have but it’s so easy to leave it on while we leave for the day. The legs get stuck or fall off around the apartment here or there so that’s annoying.

I got a steam mop Wednesday for my laminate floors. Meh. I don’t know how I feel about it. I was expecting miracle worker given what I’ve read on this Reddit group. But I also cheaped out and bought a highly rated one because it was $20 off so $40 total compared to some $80-$120 alternatives. I linked it below but now it’s only $10 off so I don’t know if I’d recommend going with it. But my boyfriend did remark it looks like no one has walked on our floors and it’s a good way to finish off a vacuum.

I had to look it up, but it's a silicone based lube. Your best bet is Soilove Laundry Soil-stain Remover, which can remove every kind of greasy oil stain from mechanics grease to Vaseline. You may have to apply more than once if it has really set in and work it well into the fabric. Good luck!

Since you can't put the books standing up vertically, try stacking them horizontally but still organize by size so they're mostly in neat columns.

You would want to put trinkets and misc items in their own containers, where related items all go in the same bin, but laid out in a way so you can see all of them and access all of them without having to move things--so not just one box with stuff stacked up it in randomly, unless you absolutely can't avoid doing so (sometimes, throwing shit in a box is really the only thing you can do haha). I find trays (like the lid of a shoebox, for example of height) instead of boxes to be best for this. Trays would be a great set up for you, since you said your shelves are deep but not tall.

To maximize the amount of space you have, you can add mini shelving within a shelf. So for example, on that top shelf, I can see you have a mug or cup of some kind. You could fit tiny shelf there, something that stands on its own, like this, so you'd have the cup where it is now alongside some other stuff, and then on top of it you could place more cups or a tray of other stuff.

You can get trays from the dollar store, use a shoebox lid, or even just cut the bottom of a tissue box off. All my trays are basically the lids for "memory boxes" I got from Michael's. I use the boxes themselves as closet organizers.

Are any/all of the parts that smell able to be removed and soaked? If so, I recommend this amazing stuff called Five Star PBW. It's normally used to clean brewery equipment, in order to remove smells that may affect other batches of beer. BUT, it's not just good for that, it's great for nearly anything that smells or has tough dirt. It's inexpensive. It's environmentally friendly, too. I know I sound like a commercial, but I just think it's fantastic. Best kept cleaning secret around. https://www.amazon.com/Five-Star-PBW-Non-Caustic-Alkaline/dp/B0064O7XBA/ref=pd_sbs_328_img_1/144-3510088-1487851?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0064O7XBA&pd_rd_r=c44ac320-e14d-449e-9dd9-3e90841419b6&pd_rd_w=lpgZB&pd_rd_wg=rsHJE&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=R8KZB8E640FJ5KM2QN9J&psc=1&refRID=R8KZB8E640FJ5KM2QN9J

Nope! Just the steam and a rag to wipe away the crap. It's time consuming but sooooooo satisfying! This is the one we bought after some research, I didn't want to spend the money for a larger one without trying it, but now I wish I had. It's great!

For black use this product and just follow the instructions. Solution Finish Black Plastic & Vinyl Plastic Trim Restorer. Determine which size to order based on the amount you need to restore.

For white use this: Salon Care 40 Volume. Brush it on and then leave it in the sun for 8 hours, if possible. Direct sunlight, not through a window. You need the UV rays from the sun to react with the cleaner for the desired effect. If you have a UV light hanging around you could use that too but most people don’t so the sun will be your most common UV source. You can repeat the process if necessary but if the day you clean is sunny enough you shouldn’t need to.

Both bottles should last you a while. Obviously start with clean electronics so the restoring process isn’t fighting through dirt or grime but it sounds like you’ve already done that. Good luck!

I live in a 100+ year old building on a busy NYC intersection and close enough to a train line that it rattles the building when they pass (which I am convinced makes it worse) -- this place is DUSTY AF ALL THE TIME. I have lived here 8+ year and tried literally everything, here's what works for me:

  • Air purifier helps quite a lot, especially in the bedroom
  • Cleaning a room from top to bottom and finishing with vacuuming
  • Switching from a bagless vacuum to a bagged model, I don't love rebuying bags but it's much less of a mess than emptying a vacuum canister
  • I know people love them but microfiber cloths didn't work well for me, I also found microfiber dusters disappointing
  • Swiffers are actually pretty good, mostly for spots where you don't want to or can't move everything (i.e. bookshelves)
  • The BEST method I've used is actually just old-fashioned dust spray and a cut-up 100% cotton t-shirt, I use Endust Free (because I don't love scented products) and it grabs everything and hangs onto to it without just smearing it around. I'm constantly shocked/impressed by the amount of dust it will pick up

Looks like a commercial vinyl tile. If so, it should be stripped and waxed on occasion for the best look:

You basically purchase a diluted stripping solution, mix it with water and mop on and let sit for a couple minutes. Something like this:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-1-Gal-Heavy-Duty-Floor-Stripper-ZULFFS128/203144888

You scrub the old wax and dirt off - in a commercial setting you would use a big mechanical buffer... however you can purchase something called a Doodle Bug. If you don't want any extra gear, a good bristled scrub brush should to. A knockoff Doodle Bug can be found on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071K69X26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_emBxDb9T0YYEV

Wash the stripper and dirt up as much as possible (squeegees are a blessing) and then mop on some wax/polish and let dry:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-1-Gal-High-Traffic-Floor-Polish-ZUHTFF128/202860171

In a commercial setting I'd be putting floor sealer on before the wax and burnishing the final coat with a high RPM floor burnisher to harden the wax... but it isn't critical in a home.

Source: Managed 25 institutional buildings with over 100 janitorial staff and I was intrigued by vinyl tile floor care. Did you know that a mechanical floor buffer can throw you across the room if you don't hold it right? Lol.

  • Mix blue dawn and warm vinegar (equal parts) in a spray bottle and go to town. If you leave a bottle of it in your shower and spritz it down at the end of your shower and give it a rinse, you'll rarely need to clean it. Will work for just about everything. Don't know about the floor, it depends on the flooring type.

  • Keep old toothbrushes - so handy for cleaning around faucets, window tracks, anything small and annoying.

  • Depending on your flooring type again, swiffer mops and/or vacuums are pretty handy and are pretty cheap. You can even find them second hand in working condition often if you're on a budget. It you're not a fan of the disposable-ness of the swiffer, there are lots of good cheap microfiber mop options out there. Enjoy your clean bachelor pad!

Maybe spray some directly on a bendable duster/brush that fits into the pipe and scrub so that you aren't pouring liquid into the AC system. Something like this maybe? https://www.amazon.com/CleanAide-Handheld-Microfiber-Duster-inches/dp/B01N2B4JSE/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7HM077V1C1NJG1JNPZ67
