I have a TP-Link TL-WDR3600 N600 and it works flawlessly with DD-WRT v3.0-r28015 std (10/23/15).
$59 on Amazon but I got it on sale for $36 from....newegg maybe? I honestly can't remember, it's been a while. I order from a few different sites. Heck, it's $52 at Walmart. Long story short, if you do some shopping around you should be able to get it within your $50 budget, possibly even close to $30.
4 gigabit LAN ports, 300Mbps 2.4ghz wifi + 300Mbps 5ghz wifi (so 600Mbps of wifi to play with if you want to configure your devices to optimize the different bands - ie. dedicate the 5ghz just to media streaming, the 2.4ghz gets shared between everything else).
560Mhz single core Atheros AR9344 v1 rev1.2 processor, 128MB of RAM.
Also had 2 USB ports which I currently have set up with external storage that's shared via samba...
It's a good all around router, look up some reviews. Even with stock firmware it's a good router, and a good deal at around $50 IMO.
EDIT: BTW - if you search for the latest "compatible version" of DDWRT on the router database it shows a MUCH older version (from 2013 I think) but I've had it running the one I mentioned up above for months and it's fine. Not a single hiccup.
A quick thing before more server info.
I can see the WiFi plug's IP is 192.168.1.1 I'm not sure what the primary routers IP is will they just be the same?
Here's a picture for a more clarificaltion
Additional Server Info
I've never accessed my server remotely before The server is a HP proliant microserver g7 n54l It's currently running FreeNAS
Bonus info
So here the ultimate dream - The server is currently just for file storage. But I want to be able to stream video and music around my house. The XBOX I hope to have plex working on it one day so I can stream video to my TV.
A Raspberry Pi and some speakers will be used for audio. (Perhaps eventually an additional RasPi will replace the XBOX for video streaming)
And if I get also get remote access to my files I will feel like I have reached the self actualisation stage of Maslow's hierarchy of needs ^_^
Please keep pouring all your kind advice on me. It's truly appreciated! :)
TP-Link has a very nice hardware for the price, and a lot of it's models run really nice with DD-WRT. For my case use, the TL-WR1043ND is unbeatable.

As for the OP's question, if you want to get signal upstairs from the basement, maybe your best choice would be a Powerline Ethernet bridge to an Access Point located upstairs. Something like this and a cheap Access Point/Router like this should do the trick.
I had this same problem. The thing is, for whatever reason, certain routers don't play nice enough with the Centurylink ONT. I had to purchase a cheap managed switch to add the VLAN tagging.
Switch: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N0OHEMA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Setup: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=300259&highlight=calix
Setup (snipit, I believe this thread was trying to use the same router as you):
"Yes that's pretty much it and the C9 will do PPPoE.
switch port 1 -> ONT
switch port 2 -> C9
Port 1: Tagged member vlan 201 (only) + PVID 201
Port 2: Untagged member vlan 201 (only) + PVID 201
If using the other switch ports for your local network just make sure they never become members of 201 "
Note: if you do end up buying this model switch, make sure you choose the option to reboot it and save config. Regular saving never held the setting for me.
I understand this router is a problematic install for DD-WRT. I don't know how committed your are to this unit, but even a successful install won't make up for seriously limited hardware.
I would suggest spending between $30 to $40 for the DIR-860 A1 and upgrade that to DD-WRT with ease. I'm using the device with DD-WRT right now and it's brilliant.

The Netgear Nighthawk X4S is on sale for $131. Has great custom firmware support.

I use a TP Link TL-WR703N and it works great. You can buy the clone with an external antenna from GLi or Amazon
The AR150 is the only one they have that supports DDWRT, the others are OpenWRT based.
If you're still looking, I've bought a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND a while ago (I have rev V1, this is V2) and it supports everything. I've been playing around with it extensively (subnetting, SSH server, USB NAS, virtual WLAN interfaces, bridging, multiple DHCP servers, boosting WLAN transmission, troubleshooting with WLAN interferences from other routers etc.) and I haven't had any issues with the hardware at all.
Dear Lord. Let me find my Tomato post and get you what you need to order to open this up…
https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/7zz6xx/
Send the original firmware when you'll repair the firmware. Once you confirm it works, you can just repeat the same process and send a different firmware of your choice.
So, according to my self past, you'll need those :
Driver is somewhere in the post, and I was using Windows 10 at the time. Take your time to read the story, don't panic, and calmly order those two items.
So I bought this
USB to TTL Serial Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QT7LQ88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_HZ-UBbC3CBMZQ
And followed the tutorials online and it actually wasn't that bad. It was good experience too. I had the same issue on a R8000.
Just Google R7000 USB TTL firmware
I'm digging my Netgear 7000P. It covers my 2000sqft house and with a wire to my Roku it's been solid on 5Ghz and 2.4 for my family's various phones and tablets and laptops. I paid <100$ on Amazon for it.
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r36070M kongac (05/31/18)

this is the one I have.
