I mostly use shatter, and a fine tip is all you really need (okay, these are Ti).

You should be concerned about protection. I had a case setup pretty similar to yours and dropped the backpack it was in. I got lucky and all it did was put a small chip in it but I can see a tentacle or two snapping off in a bad fall
