Read Dachshunds for Dummies.
Watch kikopup on Youtube for tips on how to train.
Get on your hands & knees and look around for what dangers & attractions puppy will find/destroy, then remove them before he arrives.
Get a dog crate, and teach him that it's the best den a doggo ever had (eg, feed in there, sleep in there, etc).
Learn the Calming Signals that all dogs instinctively use to communicate with body language.
Join rawfeeding yahoo newsgroups to learn how to feed real meat, not kibble crap.
Join a local dachshund meetup group to socialize your dog as often as possible (eg, monthly), so he learns good manners & social behaviors. Take him everywhere, to expose him to your whole world, so he learns to embrace rather than fear it.
Love your puppy. He'll have to be housetrained, which WILL involve mistakes, and takes months to perfect, so please be gentle.
Let your dog be a real dog...which means don't pick him up every few minutes, and do let him sniff & play. Small dog syndrome (then nasty bites later on) comes from being overly protective.
Puppy school at Petsmart was very helpful for us. Ramps are good, stairs are not necessarily evil but best avoided when possible. We put 1 sofa cushion onto the floor so our doxies can climb up & down without danger to backs. We've only had 1 doxie "go down" with IVDD, and Dodgerslist (see RHS of this page) is a most excellent resource. Minis are less susceptible than Standards to back issues, but best to be cautious. Lastly, consider getting a 2nd one after this puppy gets a bit older, cuz they do better with doggie companionship rather than solo. Best wishes for your brand new furbaby. Enjoy him. He's precious. He'll make you happy too.

Ours love love loves being outside at any time. She does a perimeter patrol multiple times a day, she’s been out there in snow, rain, thunder, none of it phases her. Very few potty accidents with her, she also has a service bell she rings when she wants to go out, and abuses that power when it suits her.

She is also a hunter and has saved us from multiple bunnies, birds, garden snakes and a rat. She’s still hoping for an elusive squirrel one day. She’s a very good girl and wants to be a good listener but all bets are off if she’s hunting, she can never be off leash outside except in the securely fenced yard and at the dog park.

She howls when her feelings are hurt. It’s the cutest thing ever. Someone left and didn’t take her in the car? Other dog doesn’t feel like playing? Baby howls.

She is crate trained and sleeps in a cat cave in the crate so she can be cozy, it was a great alternative to a pile of blankets for her.

The book Good Owners, Great Dogs was a helpful training guide for me when I got my first dog.

My dachshund, Doobie, is a little terror when it comes to toys. I've found two that hold up pretty well overall.

First, this is Doobie's absolute favorite toy but it never lasts longer than a few hours if I just leave it with him. So I'll only give it to him for play and take it away later to make it last longer. I only mention this one because he loves it so much. It does have stuffing in it, so beware of that. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EB9IV2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This toy is better because it has several squeakers, and it lasts a lot longer. It also has no stuffing to clean up. Though they will still destroy them. But I use this one to play catch (since you can throw it like a frisbee) and tug of war (Since it's easier for you and the dog to hold) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BT8K7J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the toy that I let him have all the time. It took him a year to destroy the first one. I don't know if it's because it's really that tough or because he's getting older. But I think it's worth a try. It's also really funny watching him carry this thing around the house since it's twice as long as he is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RQNE7U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the last, honorable mention: My dachshund LOVES this, and it's perfect if you are too busy and they really want to play or the weather is bad so they can't go out or get walked. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ARUKTG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm only about a month and a half in but since it seems you've been struggling with the crate training part, the Smart Pet Love Puppy made it SO MUCH EASIER. She even immediately started sleeping through the night. The prices on Amazon fluctuate but I'd spend even more on this again if I had to. The heartbeat calms her down and even now I don't turn it on and it's still her favorite toy.

It also helped when I got her the smallest crate at Petco—a cat sized one. Half of it is filled up with her Smart Puppy and a Snuggie, so she has never once had an accident in her crate.

Once keeping her in the crate became easy, it was easier to potty train. That's all I have to add to what VFR800Rider had to say.

Crusoe has made these popular, but Oscar and all his friends absolutely love these things. They fit perfectly in his mouth and squeak for months. They're the only toys he doesn't destroy within 5 minutes.

I bought the Pet Gear StRamp for $43 including shipping (Ebay) in January. I like it, but I don't know if I would like it as much if I'd paid the Amazon or pet store prices. Pretty sure my wieners hate the name as much as I do, but they love the ramp. (Err Stramp!)

Sometimes I think it's a little steep, but I'm a chronic worrier. That's probably my only issue with it. I love that they use it for getting down from the bed; they never did that with the stairs. Also, I'm not technically inclined at all, so the fact that it was like building with Duplo blocks was nice.

I bought stairs for my bed for my little guy to get up and down, and even though he still could and preferred to jump I would scold him for doing so. I made him get used to the stairs. Now about seven years later (he’s twelve now) he prefers the stairs and when he does try to jump, which is not often (maybe once-twice a month when he gets the zoomies), he only has about a 50% success rate. Its much safer and much better for their backs. My gf is a vet tech and has seen many doxies come in with back problems from jumping.

I’m really glad I got him stairs. Please don’t let your little wiener be a jumper!

He is super adorable by the way :)

EDIT: he actually has two sets of stairs. He uses this one for going up and this one for going down.

OP, I know this is very hard. Lost my old men when he was 19. You never really recover and only learn to live with it.

Here’s what gave me some comfort : Visualizing an unique place with your good dogo. You close your eyes and talk about everything you need to. Surround yourself with your best pictures and keep them close to your heart.

Also, this book helped me a lot: Healing Pet Loss .

Finally here’s a quote I think os spot on: ‘I have done mostly what most men do, And pushed it out of my mind; But I can't forget, if I wanted to, Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through -- Wherever my road inclined -- Four-feet said, "I am coming with you!" And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round, -- Which I shall never find -- Somewhere that does not carry the sound Of Four-Feet trotting behind.’

Good luck OP and it’s going to be okay.

i also adopted 7 mo that lived with pig before. oh, he acted like a pig for a long time!! used to pee on the table and on the bed right at front of us.
to me it meant something is wrong, so with patience and time he became a great dog! didnt have an accident for a few mnths, learned how to ask to go out. i also have another dog for a 6 years, and when i got puppy a year ago, there was a lot of jealousy from an adult dog too. with respect to their feelings and time they are best friends and cant live without each other.
good luck and be patient! and whatever dogs do - they are reacting on our actions.
this also helps a lot. http://www.amazon.com/D-A-P-ComfortZone-Behavior-Modifier-Diffuser/dp/B000O5HUEA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331492698&sr=8-1

Same here. Not cheap but we got this one about a year ago and it's been great. The doggers got the hang of it after a few days with just a bit of coaxing. The best part is it's tall enough to reach the top of our bed which is somewhat high. It's very sturdy so I don't anticipate needing to replace it anytime soon.

I had to go through this last summer with my girl. We ended up having to do surgery. I don't know how/if you deal with her getting up and down from furniture I just wanted to plug a great product I found for a really good price.

These have been AWESOME and in all honesty probably saved her life because they finally got her to stop jumping.

Don't know if you need the link but I would rather you know than not know!

I highly recommend Puppia. They're nice and wide across the chest, and a bit padded. Two rings on the back for the leash, so you can choose how much control they have. My dachshund weighs 16 pounds, and we use a small. Hope this helps!

The great photo book Picasso and Lump is a great read, mostly great photos with descriptive text. It's out of print, but still onlt $25 used from Amazon: Picasso and Lump

u/goldlion82 · 6 pointsr/Dachshund

We use a Puppia harness and it works well. We do 2-3 hour hikes with our little guy and it doesn't irritate his skin or armpits. We don't however leave it on all day, when he's in the house he's naked, and if he's alone in the house he's got his collar with his id and rabies on. If we leave the harness on all day, then like other harnesses it rubs some fur off and we prefer that not to happen.
