So I would say there are two things that represent the holiday. The first is sufganiyot (jelly filled donuts) and the second is latkes (potato pancakes).

I think your best bet for latkes is either Yolk or Cindi's.
Jelly filled donuts are plentiful :)

There's not a traditional Hannukah meal the way there is for other Jewish holidays, but, in general, since the holiday is connected to oil Jews tend to eat oily foods (fried potato pancakes and donuts, for example). I've read a lot online about people eating brisket, but I've never actually seen this be something families do...it's more of a general "Jewish food" than something Hannukah specific.

Additionally, Jews tend to give children "gelt" which is like chocolate with gold wrappers to look like money. I think initially money was exchanged for Hannukah and in Israel this is still the case; the 8-nights of presents thing is uniquely American.

http://www.amazon.com/Milk-Chocolate-Hanukkah-Gelt-Coins/dp/B00A9N7NXK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449527006&sr=8-2&keywords=hanukkah+gelt

If you're looking for some great Jewish food, I'd say you can go to two places-- Cindis has great Ashkenazi Jewish food and the American deli-style food...I had a tongue sandwich there a few weeks back that was incredible and they do a decent matzo ball. The other place I'd recommend is Afrah. While some Arab dishes are outside the bounds of what North African & Middle Eastern Jews tended to eat, I've been to Afrah and had Iraqi-style kibbeh that was fantastic. My old roommate's mother was from Baghdad and she was Jewish and made kibbeh that was incredible. Afrah's was very good for a restaurant and they do your typical falafel/shawarma type stuff as well.

I think in America people tend to think of Jewish food as being European, but there are lots of styles of Jewish cooking from all over the world.

If you're really interested in the truest of the true, real-deal, then search "Jachnun Dallas" on Google and you'll be in for a treat... There's a woman in North Dallas who makes the traditional Yemeni dish in her home and it is incredible.

You can definitely do your wedding for < $20-30K, but you will need to be flexible about what you must have. I'd suggest checking out /r/weddingplanning. I really liked Bridal Bargains by Denise Fields - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1889392294/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Some random ideas...

  • Your dress - buy used (http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/) has great options. Or buy a sample from a salon. I got my utterly gorgeous dress for 60% off by buying a sample I found online from a salon out in California.

  • Save hundreds on your cake by having a small cutting cake for you two (or a big-looking cake that's mostly fake tiers with real cake tier on top for cutting). Buy a grocery store sheet cake to feed guests.

  • Flowers - Consider doing silk flower arrangements yourself that you can create ahead of time or using dried flowers. If you must have real flowers, then when you talk to your florist, give her colors you want instead of specific flowers. For example, if you wanted white and bright yellow, hydrangea + yellow billy balls / mum centerpieces is going to be much less $$ than hydrangea + tulips + freesia + roses. Don't do high arrangements - they cost more. If you must have flowers at your ceremony, make sure you can reuse them at your reception. You can also consider doing your own flowers. I'm doing my own bouquets. They're so ridiculously easy. PM me if you want more info on that.

  • Use theknot.com and weddingwire.com to thoroughly research vendors. That's how I found our photographer - $2500 for her + second shooter unlimited hours day of wedding and we get a thumb drive with all our images on it so we can print out own. She's less expensive because she's younger and building her portfolio. But her photos are gorgeous. All my friends' photographers were at least $5k.

PM me if you want more ideas; I'm getting married in the spring, so I'm all over the wedding shit right now.

My uncle and grandpa have both since passed away and they we the only family members there that day so any additional accounts of this picture are lost. Grandpa was a manager of some sort at the Kodak plant where the Zapruder film was taken, but he obviously wasn’t in that day and isn’t mentioned in any of the history though a lot of his workers and coworkers were directly involved and named.

I have a book about the Zapruder film free to a good home. It’s written by his granddaughter and is a great close up account of the film and family. Interesting read on an important Dallas artifact. I want someone to enjoy it rather than have it sit on a shelf and age.

Update: book is spoken for, hope y’all enjoy

It's the Autel Robotics X-Star Premium. I'm an absolute drone novice; before yesterday I had just watched a couple videos and hadn't researched any different models and had never really planned on buying something like this, but I am blown away by this thing. It's really smart, camera is excellent, and distance, flight time, and other specs all seem to be commiserate with top of the line models. I also love that the color stands out against the sky, unlike what seems to be the typical drone color of white.

Today I just took a few videos and tried to learn how to fly it well enough so that I'll be comfortable enough to take it off beginner mode next time I take it out. I think I'm going to head to White Rock Lake with it next.

Picture above was just me clicking the picture button; I didn't go into the settings at all, so I'm sure you could get it looking better than that.

EDIT: Here's one of the videos I took. I set it to stop me at 300ft, but that bridge span is at 400, and it looks like I'm even with it. Not sure if I did something wrong and I was actually at a higher altitude or if I'm just not really that high and the angle makes it look like I'm even with the top of the span.

Don't give up! I was in the same position as you! I had an string knock lock take a chunk out of my arm the first time I went shooting, but then I was using a 55# recurve too. It left a scar after it healed.

Grab one or two of these and one of these and you you'll be all set to go shooting with your forearm and fingers protected.

The reason I say to get two of those guards is that some people will take the bar from two and put it on one set of straps to give better coverage. I also find it to be the best guard because it's super light and my arm stays nice and cool.

That is what I did for hours and hours of VHS, using one of these Elgato capture cards (which you can probably find cheaper on ebay):

http://www.amazon.com/Elgato-10020840-Video-Capture/dp/B0029U2YSA

I would seriously just loan you mine (I probably will never have a need for it again), but I gave it to a family member in Houston for their videos. A easier alternative to getting a camcorder would just be to get one of those hi-8 to vhs adapter tapes (probably at Fry's or Radio Shack or online) and play the tapes in a regular VCR. That's probably better quality.

And all that being said, my wife got all her super 8 films transferred by Action Video Service in Richardson (near West Shore and Arapaho). They were really nice and helpful:

Maybe the owner is a proctologist! Not sure how he is getting away with it but I am pretty sure that is not a real license plate. Whatever the case, the sign on the back says it is for sale:
For Sale
1974 Cadillac
El Dorado
12K - or Best Offer
Call David
972-978-2374

$12,000 seemed like a good price but it looks like it has 165,000 miles on it.

Again, not entirely my wheelhouse, but time definitely helps.

Curiosity is also critical. The guys I know who are really good software guys are always tinkering with things because they see something like Amazon Echo's home automation and think "I wonder if I could do that with some Arduino's and a Pi". They never seem to really finish the home projects, but they pick up enough of a new skill/language/protocol set that they've leveled up just a bit. Good programmers always seem to be dicking with something inconsequential that they get to 60% functional before they chase the next "Hunh. That's neat. I bet I could..." thing.

Don't just learn the hot new skill. Learn how the stuff underneath it works. As a network guy, I've met dozens of coders who didn't understand the first thing about how networks work or the OSI model. These are then they guys shouting at me in a meeting because they chose to use CIFS as their backup mechanism for boxes deployed in California and Dubai, and their backups never seem to complete. This is the first book in a trilogy that will teach you more than you ever wanted to know.

This won't help you in your current situation but I highly suggest that EVERYONE get a dashcam for their vehicle... specifically this one. It's $60 and is designed for high temperature environments. I made a post just like yours back in May and someone suggested I get a dashcam... so I did. Luckily I haven't had any incidents since then but the peace of mind is well worth the $$$. Good luck getting this sorted out!

Sent this to OP via PM, hut it may be helpful to others. I had a huge issue several weeks ago. Now gnat / fruit-fly free.

HTH.

Do you have any potted plants -- either indoors or out? Found out that mine were breeding in potted plants on my porch & then flying inside. Applied Sevin Dust to the soil for all of my plants.

Also, I got these for inside. They work amazingly well.

BEAPCO 6-Pack Drop-Ins Fruit Fly Traps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CRYOPMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.kpwxbE23ZNVM

And these:
Decorator Window Fly Glue Traps - Non-Toxic - 8 Sheets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003NYYXPI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_GmpwxbEKEDEBW

Sevin Dust eliminated them outside. The traps did a great job catching the remaining ones inside.

Before buying these traps, I bought the lil ones that looks like apples. They didn't work nearly as well as the BEAPCO ones.

It's a bit old now and really academic but "Dallas: The Making of a Modern City" by Patricia Hill is interesting. But I like real history that doesn't whitewash or sugarcoat it. From an Amazon description:

>From the ruthless deals of the Ewing clan on TV's "Dallas" to the impeccable customer service of Neiman-Marcus, doing business has long been the hallmark of Dallas. Beginning in the 1920s and 1930s, Dallas business leaders amassed unprecedented political power and civic influence, which remained largely unchallenged until the 1970s.

>In this innovative history, Patricia Evridge Hill explores the building of Dallas in the years before business interests rose to such prominence (1880 to 1940) and discovers that many groups contributed to the development of the modern city. In particular, she looks at the activities of organized labor, women's groups, racial minorities, Populist and socialist radicals, and progressive reformers—all of whom competed and compromised with local business leaders in the decades before the Great Depression.

>This research challenges the popular view that business interests have always run Dallas and offers a historically accurate picture of the city's development. The legacy of pluralism that Hill uncovers shows that Dallas can accommodate dissent and conflict as it moves toward a more inclusive public life. Dallas will be fascinating and important reading for all Texans, as well as for all students of urban development.

Another book is White Metropolis by Michael Phillips, who is a local historian and community college professor (I believe). From the description:

>From the nineteenth century until today, the power brokers of Dallas have always portrayed their city as a progressive, pro-business, racially harmonious community that has avoided the racial, ethnic, and class strife that roiled other Southern cities. But does this image of Dallas match the historical reality? In this book, Michael Phillips delves deeply into Dallas's racial and religious past and uncovers a complicated history of resistance, collaboration, and assimilation between the city's African American, Mexican American, and Jewish communities and its white power elite.

>Exploring more than 150 years of Dallas history, Phillips reveals how white business leaders created both a white racial identity and a Southwestern regional identity that excluded African Americans from power and required Mexican Americans and Jews to adopt Anglo-Saxon norms to achieve what limited positions of power they held. He also demonstrates how the concept of whiteness kept these groups from allying with each other, and with working- and middle-class whites, to build a greater power base and end elite control of the city. Comparing the Dallas racial experience with that of Houston and Atlanta, Phillips identifies how Dallas fits into regional patterns of race relations and illuminates the unique forces that have kept its racial history hidden until the publication of this book.

One of the reviews:

>This compelling book goes a long way toward explaining Dallas's dysfunctional political machine by exposing the history and nature of its engine. According to Phillips, political power in Dallas has always been partitioned on a sliding scale of "whiteness", with WASPs at the top, African Americans at the bottom, and everyone else (notably Jews and Hispanics) jockeying for position in between-- a practice that is still in effect today. The evidence for Phillips' argument is overwhelming and it will be interesting to see the reaction to this book (if any) by Dallas's power structure and its critics. Phillips spares no one, including Dallas's current civil rights activists, whom he accuses of taking only a superficial stab at real change and minority empowerment.

Reposting an old comment that I had made a while back about the dashcam I have. It's less than half the price ad the one OP linked, and is a lot less obnoxious. I highly recommend it.

I have this Spytec 118-C and am extremely happy with it.

  • Video quality is 100% awesome in day and night.
  • You just leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter and it starts recording automatically when your car starts. Never have to mess with it. They make a hard wire kit you can purchase as well, if you want a cleaner install.
  • It records to a micro SD card and continuously overwrites video (except for any saved video). There is a little a button on it that you can press and it will save the last few minutes so it doesn't overwrite it.
  • It auto-detects if you get in a collision and saves the video for you.

The SD card I use is a 32 GB Class 10 one. I tried using a lower class, but it had issues because the card wasn't fast enough.

The "C" version of this camera (the one I linked to) has a capacitor instead of a battery so you don't need to worry about it getting too hot and exploding or whatever if it gets super hot in your car. I think places where it's cold should get the other one? Do some research.

So on Amazon, the new ones have full year warranties vs your non-warranty on the plasmas and is shipped to your door for free. The LCD vs Plasma is arguable, but a brand new LCD with a full warranty is a better deal. The deal from a few weeks ago was a substantially better deal, though no longer available, it was simply to point out that substantially better deals are available from time to time.

I would argue the used ones from Amazon are better, since they are returnable in the short term should there be any defects and come with a year warranty.

AUKEY Dash Cam, Dashboard Camera... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072FGL63X?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I got it last Wednesday and I love it. Small form factor and great picture

u/ElCangrejo · 1 pointr/Dallas

I have been very happy with this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072FGL63X/ - got it on sale for $50, but most of the cheaper ones don't capture plate numbers that well. So, make sure you get a plate if something happens.

Att site should list compatible modems. I prefer a separate modem and router for easier control and troubleshooting. The modem needs to handle at least 300mb like this. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-CM500-1AZNAS-download-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B06XH46MWW/ref=sxin_2_ac_d_pm?keywords=netgear+cable+modem&pd_rd_i=B06XH46MWW&pd_rd_r=fd5b5847-86a5-44f6-ac60-39a3a0965ef9&pd_rd_w=9Z4xl&pd_rd_wg=RwZPt&pf_rd_p=64aaff2e-3b89-4fee-a107-2469ecbc5733&pf_rd_r=CK31S9SR1ADGY5C4RHGX&qid=1563045613&s=electronics

You could look at an all in one as well.

https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-C3000-100NAS-C3000-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B00IF0JAIU

If your budget is really that tight, this is the way to go instead of renting their equipment. You can find stuff a lot cheaper than this is you pick it up used.

u/hahaimontheinternet · 2 pointsr/Dallas

I have the A118-C (http://www.amazon.com/Spy-Tec-A118-C-Capacitor-Dashboard/dp/B00SK8B47W)

It's been great through summers and it's really inconspicuous and out of the way unless you're looking for it. I always forget its there. This or the g1w-c are great.

u/Thecatmilton · 68 pointsr/Dallas

You need a dash cam. After 2 hit and runs I got one. The last two people who hit me got to buy my car cool new stuff. The g1w-c is good and is around 55-65 on Amazon. The cheaper ones will be low quality fakes. Transcend 32gb micro sd cards seem to work the best.

I linked what I have below. There are two color choices. The black would be less noticeable.

I bought this book for a friend when she first moved to DFW and she loved it! It's a lot of the 'typical' stuff, but she's had a blast crossing things off the list.
