No must have, honestly, your background degree in MechE and Computer and Data Science is enough of a qualification.

So your qualifications are fine, I would probably brush up on Python and some machine learning techniques and be prepared for data science interview questions. https://www.amazon.com/Heard-Data-Science-Interviews-Interview/dp/1727287320/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=data+science+interview+questions&qid=1561996791&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 This is actually a good book to practice on. Cause your qualification will get you the interview, but you need to sell yourself during the interview: be likable, know the basics, be able to do a SQL coding challenge if asked (honestly should take you few hours to MAX 2 days to brush up on SQL), and maybe talk about a machine learning project you've done or some statistical experience you have.

The hard part is always finding someone to take a chance on you. They get a little skeptical when precedents are not established. Honestly, you just need to convince that your good enough, they will teach you everything or rather you will learn what you need on the job.

My company is still looking for summer data science interns, its remote and unpaid, but if your interested PM me and we can talk more.

Qualification for advice: I currently work as a data scientist and help others get hired as a data scientist at other companies.

For books, I recommend Data Science Design Manual, Practical Statistics for Data Scientists and wzchen's list of free books. I recently accepted a job as a Data Scientist and used these books as resources.

I'd recommend this book. But frankly, it is quite old school to ask such type of questions in a DS interview. This is mainly material for engineers.
