I've tried different things, hard to achieve 100% success, u get some stress n ur back at it, so what I do when things become intense is use some cream like this one or this one, and on top I put a bandaid, the creams help as they keep the skin humid enough, canesten is good cause it kills fungus n some bacteria, the bandaids r the 2 in wide, great for when u r outside and they stick really good.
Best luck, I know the pain, is bad when it gets cold n u can't even wash ur hands cause even the cold water hurts
I’m in the same boat. Step-son (16) called out my thumb being all damaged/bloody and that was the final straw. I’ve been trying to stop off and on over the last 6 months. This is my longest streak of not doing it and I feel like it’s at the hardest point because new skin is growing under the damaged dead skin which is making the old skin very in my face. It’s sharp, dry, catches on things and a bit of an eyesore. I’m pushing through it though, for the most part.
One of the things that’s helped my the most is if I do lapse and bite, I spit it out. I don’t want to give my brain the reward it wants. And if there’s a particular finger that is more desirable to bite I put a bandaid over it. Also use lotion at least twice a day. I use this stuff because it feels less greasy then other lotions and generally feels pretty pleasant on my hands/fingers.
It’s been 2 weeks since a major biting session. I’ve had a couple picking sessions (finger nails scraping at cuticles), but they were very short lived and only on 2 fingers (thumb, index). I stopped after that.
There’s no right way to go about this, just be diligent and try to be hyper aware of when you do it and stop yourself. One bite on accident in a day is still significantly better than giving in to a whole session. Progress is progress. The more you’re able to not do it the easier it gets though (for the most part).

These are really good. Thin and comfortable and they cover your hands! 👍
This is my usual state 😢
One thing that often helps me (when I remember to wear them) are these finger sleeves:

I find I'm most likely to chew my thumbs while I'm driving or while watching a movie in a theater, so I always make sure to put these on before I do either and it's worked wonders. The skin-tone ones are better than the solid black ones because it makes it less obvious that you're wearing them.
