First off-how is your bed and mattress? It's what I'd tackle first. Make sure that your bed is comfortable and inviting. Pick a color that you're in love with and start with neutral sheets (gray, white, off white, lines, etc). Pick a nice comforter. Get a matching pillowcase, either one that matches the comforter or sheets. Center the bed on the wall, add a side table or two, maybe some lights.

I think the desk is fine, but I'd look into some shelves above it or beside it. Get yourself a nice desk set (pens, notebooks, filing, etc). Get a nice desk chair. Add a lamp to the desk.

Hang a new curtain or get blinds.

If you can paint the walls, go with neutral.

Get rid of boxes on top of things, find places for them. If you don't have a place, look into creating one.

Add art to the walls. Go as colorful or gray as you want. Pick art that you love.

Add a rug or two. It'll soften the space and make it cozier.

Add a throw blanket and a nice throw pillow. Maybe add a small bench in front of your bed (for storage and sitting when getting ready).

If I were you, I'd paint the yellow cabinet a dark gray. I'd go with white sheets (or light gray) and a dark gray comforter in a size larger than my bed. (If twin get a full or queen comforter). Something like this. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ef/6b/e7/ef6be72beb4df171fca9551b8c8490b5.png I'd add a couple of small white side tables. Bring in colors of brass as accents. I'd hang some curtains (white with blackout) and underneath I'd add some sheer curtains for light during the day. Hung wider than the window by a few inches to give the illusion of a wider window. Replace the chair with something modern but comfortable -maybe something like https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/907932/Realspace-Modern-Comfort-Winsley-Bonded-Leather/ I'd add a small bookshelf, a small bench with storage like https://www.amazon.com/Spatial-Order-Kaufmann-Modern-Storage/dp/B07F63HDP5?th=1 and probably hang a large art piece over the bed and a few on the walls.

All this is great :) I do have access to a Ikea and I'm open to painting my own walls. My budget is fairly open so that shouldn't be much of a deal breaker for me... I love this http://i.imgur.com/MtIJpsk.jpg and think that I'll be leaning towards it. Any bed frames / sofas / night stands in mind?

I currently have these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G5NKV7W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 lamps for the night stands and this
table:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FSE7GN2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have this Chaise but don't know if I'd be able to place it in front of the bed so I'm unsure on if I'll be using it or not... http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29902202/

On a side note I totally love http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10309150/ these and plan on getting them :) I'm open to a black / white theme like in this photo: http://www.dentalroseville.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/apartment-style-minimalist-white-l-sofas-with-modern-black-table-and-chair-feat-nice-pictures-and-glasses-windows-for-studio-apartment-design-ideas-fantastic-wooden-furnitures-with-modern-sofas-also-h.jpg since I feel like it would go with my current desk .

Thanks a ton for all the info and work you did!!! Your're amazing!

Edit: I'm open to having it be fairly white honestly.. things such as a black / white painting over the bed and a white couch in front of the bed. I love the little hints of brown since they make it feel a bit more nature-yy. I love Ikea and amazon so for the time being those would be my two go to shops.

Edit2: You'll probably hate me for this but this is my current comp chair which I love and am very reluctant to move.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PKVRD86/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Your room is so lovey an neutral! You have a lovely opportunity to go with pretty much any color you would like :) personally, I would go for a pale yellow or pastel pink to soften the strong geometric vibe you have going on. Here are some on amazon that I found:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KWOYITW/ref=twister_B077QD6V4T?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. I agree that it is a good general rule to not have a ton of color everywhere - sheets are my exception. They are only seen when the bed is peeled back - so they can be your own little secret.

I am not sure what your duvet is like here is one that would work along side the light pink:https://www.amazon.com/VClife-Bedding-Cotton-Checkered-Collection/dp/B01N9O53RH/ref=sr_1_22?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1535785093&sr=1-22&keywords=duvet%2Bcover%2Bcotton&th=1 It has a nice airy geometric print that is still feminine. I would add a nice throw pillow like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/243462975/love-birds-pillow-embroidered-cotton?ref=shop_home_active_51 two neutrals from ikea: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20395821/and you are all set!!

Hope this helps!!

Mixing warm and cool will change the colors. It can work. It can sometimes be difficult. I would do Neutral and cool to make it easier. The rug just doesn’t do anything for the room. I understand you’re going for a style. Don’t forget you want to be sure you like the feel of the rug. The function of the rug plus any cleaning. Price is another thing. I would probably go with a neutral black and white rug. The rug could add some texture. The following Are cool just so you can look And see what you’d like https://www.etsy.com/listing/520238258/grey-area-rugscandinavian-rugsicelandic?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=scandinavian+rug&ref=sr_gallery-3-32&organic_search_click=1. This isn’t listed as Scandinavian but would look great.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/699795339/moroccan-rug-beni-ourain-rug-handmade?ref=search_recently_viewed-5&frs=1 of course online and pictures are different than in person. Once again budget is a big deal. A lot of design I believe In buying things you really love not just a filler within your budget of course.

Oh and the rug needs to be bigger. Enough for the chair and sofa to fit which of course would raise the price.

Edit: this would look nice too. nuLOOM Trellis Cozy Soft & Plush Shag Rug, 7' 10" x 10', White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DW90FE6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DJKTDbG3H7D72

You actually have a right setup of the sofa and the tv. Just need a little make over.

  1. For the sofa, why not add some cover? to add an accent like this one.
  2. Put some rugs, a white or grey rug would be great just like this.
  3. The bookshelf, you can put it in the corner. (I can't actually see what's on the other side of the photo so I can't suggest moving it) Then paint it white to lessen darkness of the space, put some succulent plants, books and some small frames and arrange it like this.
  4. Remove the blue and black storage. (Is that a storage?) you can put them away or in your kitchen.
  5. Then the wall will leave blank, you can hang some wall art on it. Wall Art of your choice or what you love (characters, nature, flowers) I've found some elegant wall arts here.
  6. The room is dark, I think you need to add some light above the tv and I suggest adding a wallpaper to add some accent coz the room is kinda bald and dark. You can get your idea here.

I hope it helps you. ;) It's just my suggestion by the way. \^_\^

The title made me cringe, you can just ask for help, no guilt trip needed. :)

So, I think art and textiles are what you're missing here to give your room some warmth and personality. Your room doesn't really say anything about you, what are you into? What colours do you like?

For art you don't need to spend tons of money - hit up sites like society6, etsy, deviant art, etc and grab some prints that speak to you in some way. I would use either of the long walls you have to create a nice gallery wall of a few prints you like. Pick up cheap frames from IKEA, Walmart, discount-store-of-choice, keep the frame colours the same (all black/white/birch/whatever) to keep the collection cohesive.

Use what you have already for additional interest - hang that guitar(s? Is the blue thing on top of the armoire also an instrument?) with a guitar hook.

Textiles like bedding, and curtains will also personalise the space and can be a place where you go big and bold with colour if that appeals to you. It's also possible to recover your chairs with a new fabric, again something that would make it potentially more 'you'. The contrast of traditional furniture with spunky fabric is stylish and a good way to keep it feeling more modern.

Definitely get a new overhead light, and perhaps a desk lamp as well. Well-designed rooms have more than one source of lighting, so you can change it up for the task at hand.

If you want to go for the bonus round, think about picking up a plant or two to give the space some life. Google low-maintenance plants if you have a black thumb - there are plants that can withstand a fair amount of neglect but still bring some green into your world.

The most important thing is to find stuff that you like - you can be advised to pick this colour or that colour, or this print or that painting, but if you don't like them, what's the point?

u/Neyvash · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

Do you like lighter colors? If you are open to darker shades (I can't help it; I always feel like rich wood tones look more expensive), then maybe something like this: https://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/8761cdd800c78468_4-7188/contemporary-bathroom.jpg

You could either paint your vanity a dark brown (sand/prime/paint) or use a contact paper to basically "wrap" it. Then get wide horizontal cabinet handles, and they can double as a hand towel or washcloth holder. Paint the walls a light grey and put in floating shelves over the toilet as /u/lexiico suggested. I would use wood shelving in the same dark color as the vanity cabinet.

I would also change out that mirror for something with dark wood trim, or for a medicine cabinet that sinks into the wall, or something with a light bar for better lighting. Get one of those cabinet-door-mounted holders for styling tools ( like https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Bathroom-Cabinet-Organizer-Straighteners/dp/B074JDS4HM ), or mount it to the wall over the toilet ( like https://www.minervabeauty.com/minerva-wall-mount-appliance-holder.htm )

When you have more money, change out the tile for larger tiles (easier to clean and will look better IMHO), and carry that same tile up the wall halfway (also using it to replace that backsplash area). You may be able to use vinyl peel-and-stick tiles on the wall now, but I'm not sure how well they'd remain stuck to the wall with the shower's humidity.

Good luck and congratulations!

u/robin8118 · 1 pointr/DesignMyRoom

If you have the space, this is pretty awesome, imo. Or you could grant a little girl's wishes by getting this desk because I love it so much and think it'd be great with the chair! 😍

u/acornedbeefhash · 11 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

Love what you’ve done with the place! Love the mirror above the fire place. I’d recommend this rug from amazon. The soft geometric pattern isn’t too harsh or too floral and “girly”. I find it to strike the perfect neutral.

A soft off white or grey rug to match the accent chair would be perfect.

Also a nice deep wood rectangular coffee table would looks great to tie in the wood tones of the table.

Try to de-clutter and sort as much as you can. It'll probably help if you google Konmari and watch some videos of people organizing (not just decluttering) closets.

Like the other person said, it'll help if you put in some additional shelves from the hardware store.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

If you have the budget for it, get matching hangers for hanging clothes and some storage bins for folded clothes to make if look more organized and cohesive. Below are some links for examples.

Velvet hangers: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Velvet-Suit-Hangers-30-Pack/dp/B00FXNABPI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=velvet+hangers&qid=1571428595&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExU0hHM1hPRE0xU0kwJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODU3MTM4MkowTUI5NEgwUVM3TiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODM5MzA5Rzc0TFdOVDBEOVRTJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

These are great because compared to plastic ones, the clothes are more likely to stay in place and less likely to slip off

Fabric storage bins: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Velvet-Suit-Hangers-30-Pack/dp/B00FXNABPI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=velvet+hangers&qid=1571428595&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExU0hHM1hPRE0xU0kwJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODU3MTM4MkowTUI5NEgwUVM3TiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODM5MzA5Rzc0TFdOVDBEOVRTJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Personally, I prefer clothes folded side by side (Horizontally) instead of stacked on top of each other (vertically) because you can see everything you own and are less likely to mess up the rest of your clothes looking for a specific shirt.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

For the top shelf, try to get storage bins that you can label (Ideally big labels so you can see them clearly) . the stuff in here should ideally be things you don't use daily.

Storage bins with labels: https://www.amazon.com/Royexe-Features-Foldable-Organizer-Organizers/dp/B074WLYBXB/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=cloth+storage+cubes+label&qid=1571429113&s=home-garden&sr=1-1

Either that or, assuming you have a vacuum, get a vacuum storage bag. you can fit more and it should look less cluttered as well. Just make sure that the bag isn't wider than the depth of your closet otherwise the overhang will make it look bad.

Vacuum Bag: https://www.amazon.com/Spacesaver-Premium-Storage-Cleaner-Bacteria/dp/B01ICEEHUO/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=2RB1V6EU9A0DI&keywords=vacuum+bags+for+storage&qid=1571429221&s=home-garden&sprefix=vacuum+bag%2Cgarden%2C196&sr=1-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyUFQ3NlRSUEExQUhPJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODE3MzAwMjc4VzNUOFpaSlE4QyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUExMDE2NTU2TjhOQzBMSDMwSDQ2JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If you want to get real nit picky about this, depending on how tall you are, it might also help to get a small stepstool you can hide in the closet. So you dont get lazy about putting stuff on the top shelf.

There's a handle on 'em. Place a command hook on the same area as your hanging clothes and store it there.

Step Stool: https://www.amazon.com/Folding-Anti-Slip-Surface-Kitchen-Bathroom/dp/B077392LCQ/ref=sr_1_13_sspa?keywords=step+ladder+small&qid=1571429502&s=home-garden&sr=1-13-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyNlhSVE5VRUFIQ1ZRJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzE5NjU0RTkwSlc5ME9MWk9WJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwOTQwMDI4VFZBNjlCMlFQU0Emd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

  • 1x[15.5”x35”x58.75”] possible https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20294619/#/60294622 unit
  • 1x[10.5”x30.25”x26.5”] plant stand, shaped like the T-block in tetris (ergo height is measured from the “bottom” of the T”)
  • 1x[23.4”x57.5x27”; 29.5”x59.5”x1” tabletop] wood desk, Country Pine style
  • 1x[22”x38”x24”] antique trunk

  • 1xLG 42LH30-UA
  • 1x[38”x40.5”x36”] armchair, Sage color, upside down trapezoid in shape

    Further Considerations:

  • Have a number of varying different alcohol bottles
  • 1xstringlight, bright white
  • Two stools for the bar/countertop
  • Window sills, about 5-6”
  • I have a couple of consoles I want to be able to use and power strips to back them up
  • I have an old record player and amp I want to be able to hook up to the old speakers
  • I have a functioning computer with monitor, plus laptop I would like to use
  • This is currently MY space. Upstairs will be roommate’s. Unused furnishings can be given to her.
  • My apartment is more Sage green than tan like the pictures (not my apartment, same model, except mine doesn't have the staircase window)
  • I definitely want at least one of the 3x3 tables in my space, for tabletop gaming and dining purposes

I have an old college roommate of mine moving in with her cats, so we're splitting the apartment into the lofted and downstairs section as, respectfully, her space and my space (we each need our own area). In addition, we plan on moving out in November into a more spacious apartment or townhouse, but for now we're locked into this space. Ergo I don't want to spend a whole bunch on a space I know I'm going to move out of, but I want it to look better than it currently does regardless. In the spirit of spring cleaning I've collated all my assets in the apartment, ergo it looks like a disaster zone and why I'm using pictures of another unit. So, in short, cheaper budget for a minimalist style is what I'm looking for. Thanks all!

I bought this rug about a week ago. I love it. Its very soft and in-expensive! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XCF7QFR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think the Grey or Deep pink would look great and would be amazing for throwing different colors in there!

u/netty5522 · 3 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

honestly just do the same setup as u/carcaju suggest and mount the tv as it is in the picture, put the desk in the same spot as well. Definitely ditch the entertainment center. if that dark blue (?) lounge chair thing has 4 legs you could potentially get bed raisers like these to put creat some space for your records and games and such, and then itll be a little higher as well for better tv viewing

that's rough - ikea doesn't have a lot of options typically.

How about a nice grey couch? I wouldn't keep the legs on this one though. (I looked on the website and picked a random European country - hopefully they have the same stuff at your ikea): http://www.ikea.bg/DefaultM.aspx?page=sproductview&iID=19525&cr=1_25306_0_0_1

It looks like you're into purple -and I like purple with gray (it's a bit less harsh than against black) so if you get a grey couch, you could have a purple rug too. Maybe purple drapes (but not both - that's too much!).

Also - you have a beautiful bathroom, but how on earth does it have no medicine cabinet or storage? I say get some free standing shelves for under the sink or just suck up the cost and buy a cabinet to install under there. Either that or buy a bathroom tray to put on top of that clothes washer to put your things in: http://www.amazon.com/Display-Fixture-Store-Full-Size/dp/B007PSHDQO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1397405503&sr=8-7&keywords=tray

I recommend buying bed risers to elevate your bed so you can fit some storage bins under the bed.
