Once in a Great City: A Detroit Story by David Maraniss is really good. It covers Detroit in the mid-1960s, when things were generally 'good,' but the cracks were already starting to show. One of my favorites I have read.

The absolute best for what you described is Origins of the Urban Crisis, which others have mentioned here.

I also recommend The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century by Grace Lee Boggs. It talks about Detroit a lot, but isn't centered around Detroit, but it's very interesting. Her documentary is also on Netflix which I highly recommend, much more Detroit themed. She was a very influential person in Detroit and the United States in general, and I'm always shocked when I bring her up and people haven't even heard of her.

Oh and Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prison by Shaka Senghor is very good. It's a memoir but it also talks about what Detroit was like in the 1980s and kind of gives you a feel for the era of Detroit that we all know about, but there aren't many stories about.

According to that data sheet, you should be able to just hook up 12VDC and be good to go. Just make sure your power supply can provide enough amps. 0.6W per module would be 50mA @ 12V. So just count the modules and multiply by 50 to figure out how much current in mA you'll need, then add an additional 25% for safety.

EDIT: The above info is only valid if there isn't already an existing power supply hooked up to the modules.

EDIT 2: something like this would probably have more than enough juice to power all of them: Amazon

The Christmas tree at Campus Martius is pretty sweet at night. You can ice-skate as well. I have this book on the buildings. I have created my own tour based on that.

It pretty much is a large immersion blender. I worked at a pizza place in my home town where we had a power drill with a special attachment for mixing sauces. Link for visual. It literally is just a metal rod that you can attach to a drill that has some stuff at the bottom that can mix liquids in large food grade buckets. We made sauce 5 gallons at a time so stirring all the seasonings, tomatoes, paste, and water together would have taken a long time without it. Also super useful for mixing up 5 gallon batches of ranch.

Have you considered reading Them: Adventures with Extremists? It's a great read. From the author's description:

> A wide variety of extremist groups -- Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis -- share the oddly similar belief that a tiny shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, journalist Jon Ronson has joined the extremists to track down the fabled secret room.

this is the pan I got. I love it though I have washed it once or twice with soap...perhaps I should not be doing that anymore. Thanks for the heads up

There’s a fantastic book on this exact topic I recommend: “American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America Prosper”.

There’s been a concerted effort for generations by business interest groups to promote propaganda denigrating public goods, services, and investments. America’s global leadership in public goods and services in the mid-century is what made America ever have an enviable middle class in the first place.

Turns out funding infrastructure and schools is actually good for the economy!

Best book I have read by far about Detroit is Scott Martelles' Detroit: A Biography. It takes you from the French settlement of the area to modern times, which lots of fascinating facts: Like the white race riots of the late 1800s, egged on by the Free Press, which at the time was a pro-slavery, racist newspaper. (We've changed greatly since then.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I7IVYG6/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

That's an old style tv antenna. LOL that was what I thought before I read the description.

I'll go with it being an alarm (looks like it might be a horn inside, with a light below). Do any windows or doors have anything that looks like this? https://www.amazon.com/Normal-Recessed-Magnetic-Contacts-Switch/dp/B0056K5ZC2

Brightmoor is not a great area, no. I would assume that whatever company you're interviewing with will have a parking lot with a gate, unless they're run out of a house or something. Stick close by and you'll be fine. If there's no parking then you'll want a club on your steering wheel and to take anything valuable out of your car.

You'll be fine, you won't get shot or shanked or robbed in the three seconds you'll be outside, but you should keep your wits about you. Also, don't judge too hard—Brightmoor is full of people, some good and some bad, and no one likes feeling as though they're being perceived as horrible. It might also be a good idea to check out the area on Google Street View just so you know where all your turns will be, what the building you're headed to looks like, and in general what to expect from the neighborhood.

We have no idea. No experts can predict the future. By all accounts it will be better than it once was but there are just too many variables to account for in order to give an accurate prediction.

Here's a book that talks about predictions and how they're silly. It's a really good read. http://www.amazon.com/Future-Babble-Pundits-Hedgehogs-Foxes/dp/0452297575

  • "52 Pickup," "Swag," "Unknown Man #89," "The Switch" and "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit" -- masterful crime novels by Elmore Leonard, aka the Dickens of Detroit.
"If you’re writing crime fiction, you couldn’t pick a better American city," says his son Peter, also a local novelist.

  • "The Turner House" by Detroit native Angela Flournoy, a well-reviewed 2015 novel (her first) set on the east side. It became a National Book Award finalist.

  • "Detroit: A Biography" by Scott Martelle (nonfiction). "I spent nearly a decade as a journalist in Detroit, and became infatuated with the city as a story."

  • "Detroit: An American Autopsy," a 2013 memoir/narrative by Charlie LeDuff.

  • "The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit ," an essential 1996 classic (reissued in a 2014 paperback) by influential historian Thomas Sugrue, a Detroit native.

  • "How to Live in Detroit Without Being a Jackass," by u/akfoley -- a helpful, humorous, savvy guide for newcomers, returnees and anyone who wants to come correct. Originally dropped in 2015, get the 2018 second edition (updated).

I'm currently reading Detroit: A Biography by Scott Martelle, which is an actual biography of the city and region starting with the first settlers going through the revolution, depressions, the auto history, and corruption.

It's a good biography to learn the city's origins and names that built it. I'd criticize Martelle's timeline and reliance on only the Free Press (he was also a staff report for the Freep) as his most cited source. But other than that, it's an enjoyable read and I'm learning a lot.

I can’t think of a store, but I would suggest something like this.

>Schramm's is arguably one of the best in the world. The owner literally wrote the book on mead making.

These are the ones I purchased. Notes, these are not sun lamps, just very bright lights. Its a mental thing for me.

Crash Course by Paul Ingrassia gives a good account of the "carpocalypse" of 2008, specifically focusing on the bailouts of GM and Chrysler.
