I leave mine down. The longer the hair is put in a certain position, the more likely the change will be permanent. I have a part on two of my dreads where I tied them back where theyre kind of kinked. Ive palm rolled my palms to the bone and its still there. Its getting better, but its been like that for about 9 months. So be wary of doing anything to them early on.

When my dreads were new I tied them back (my job at the time required it) with something along the lines of this Then my mom got me some of These and Ive been wearing stuff like that ever since (be careful though, as they're wool and do get warm).

Basically, dont tie them back with themselves until they're more mature and if you HAVE to tie them back, use the widest hair ties you can get your hands on.

I'm almost ashamed to say it, but I've been using one of those TurbieTwist microfiber things for awhile, and it works great.

At the beginning I washed less often than I do now. After my first twist I didn’t wash for a month. Then I dropped to two weeks. Now I wash once a week.

Use a clarifying shampoo. This is what I use. I also recommend wearing a knit cap to keep your roots as maintained as possible; really helpful early on. Here’s mine.

or, if your hair is too thick, buy a pack of these and double them. Thicker headbands are awesome too just to keep your hair out of your face!

This is my favorite shampoo for residue free needs! I sometimes rub it between my hands and do my roots, occasionally i'll put a pump in a big bowl and just soak my dreads in it. It always feels lighter and when I soak it, I can see everything being pulled out of it.

Get these! They make me feel much more comfortable wearing my hair out and down in public.

I used perm rods like these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0036ZDWQK/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541452088&sr=8-2&keywords=long+perm+rods&dpPl=1&dpID=01xVFhCgtAL&ref=plSrch

They were super uncomfortable to sleep in though, so I think if I try it again I will need to use a bonnet hair dryer instead. They weren't all the way dry when I took them out in the morning.

I work out with mine and it's usually fine. If my scalp gets too dirty and it's not time to wash I use this to help clean my scalp.

A latch hook can sometimes work for you. It also helps to have someone else doing the hooking and braiding.

I got these headbands and like them a lot. They are soft, washable, keep my hair back off my face and there are lots of color options. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SJ7TMM8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use this kind from Giovanni when I braid in my wool dreads and I really like it. It’s got a nice hold but doesn’t really dry down so it doesn’t get flaky. I think it’s water based too.

u/taegan- · 1 pointr/Dreadlocks

I have this (similar cap) and it doesn’t keep them very dry if you go underwater. (works fine for showering etc.) with submersion, water leaks in through the bottom and ends up saturating everything.

I use tweezers to get fuzz out. You might want to invest in a microfiber towel for your hair. I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MGGYGB0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_ihG4DSKfdORM4 and haven't had anymore lint problems, also the silk bedding tip is spot on. Bottom line you are going to get lint no matter what, the best you can do is minimize the linty things around you.
