I have used these Sony earbuds for years. They are a bit on the expensive side, but they are amazing. I've even gotten one of my friends to buy them after hearing how good they sound.

Why: The thing I love about EDM is that they're so many subgenres, I could go from Dubstep to Progressive and still enjoy it without really changing the core theme. Also, most of my friends enjoy EDM, so a lot of songs bring back good memories.

When/Where: Almost all day, walking to class, working out, doing homework, when I'm bored, etc.

How: I have an iPhone 7+, but makes the music are these inexpensive earphones that provide great sound, for a very cheap price.

These work really well. I don’t glove but I have friends who do and they use these to sneak things in. They also work great for sneaking other things in!

This is hands down the most comprehensive guide I've come across and it's taught me everything I know. If you post on /r/edmproduction this will be the first guide they recommend. If you can't afford that then here is a free guide that is also very good. https://gumroad.com/l/tldrmusic

V-MODA LP2's are my favorites for EDM because they've got really profound bass without muddying the entire sound spectrum within a track. They run for $150 on amazon or at a local guitar center... I'd also recommend the $20 XL Ear-Pads for them, they add so much comfort!! You can also purchase customizable ear-shields which add a more personal flavor to your headphones if that floats your boat :)

https://www.amazon.com/JVC-HAFX5V-Inner-Headphones-Violet/dp/B005DHKRVC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1502667343&sr=8-4&keywords=ha-fx5&th=1

Seriously, the HA-FX5 are my favorite headphones I've ever owned (Sony, Grado, Denon) because I found them right when I got into electronic and they're perfect for it. The highs are slightly tinny but mids and lows make it worth it. They'll also only last you about 6-8 months if you're lucky, but they're only $8-10 so I just buy another pair when mine is going out.

Just make sure to not buy on eBay. When in the states I would only buy from Amazon but down here in Aus I don't have that option and when I bought on eBay it was some super cheap shitty knockoff Chinese ones (which blows my mind, they're already just an $8 headphone, why the fuck would you counterfeit that???)

This is the type I have. Its easy to set up and works great, you can change how sensitive it is to the music. https://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Multicolor-Strip-Light-Controller/dp/B007RGRJ36

Finally I got some time to put together a list of things that may be useful for this post:

I got these and absolutely adore them, the bass really comes through and since they are "open" the sound feels more natural. Sennheiser 598s

This book is one of the best for laying out the rules and reasoning as to how you build counterpuntal melodies, and build harmonies in musically sound way.

Things like avoiding parallel fifths etc.
