Everybody is providing info on the listing so if I may, mind if I question your choice?

If you have the money a dual stick and rudder pedals setup will give you much better freedom of movement IMO compared to one stick and a throttle and it makes controlling the ship with FA Off much easier if you ever decide to explore that option. Just make sure, if you consider my suggestion, that you get a set of pedals with toe brakes and set those for throttle/reverse.

It is very easy to coordinate if you're used to driving a car and having two sticks will give you analog control of pitch/roll as well as translational thrusters. It's very easy to match speed with a Sidewinder or Hauler in my Eagle while still keeping my nose (and guns) pointed up at his cargo hatch but after a while it almost becomes like a whole extra level of freedom in flight control.

My personal setup consists of 2x Thrustmaster T16000M flight sticks (which are incredibly precise and well built for the cost), CH Pro rudder pedals and Track IR and I think it's awesome. I also use Voice Attack for some functions like lights, hardpoints and cargo scoop as well as power distribution so I don't need to move my hands off the controls. Just some food for thought, links below.

Sticks: http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-2960706-Thrustmaster-T-16000M-Flight/dp/B001S0RTU0

Pedals: http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-Pedals-Simulator-300-111/dp/B0000512IE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1420480922&sr=1-1

TrackIR: http://www.amazon.com/TrackIr-Premium-Head-Tracking-Gaming-Pc/dp/B0029M6VKA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1420480970&sr=1-1&keywords=TrackIR

It's possibly more investment than you're ready for but if you end up with the HOTAS and feel like you need more control just keep it in mind. While you can't use that particular stick without having the throttle I don't see why you couldn't set it aside and place another stick down if you wanted to go that route. Personally I ended up replacing my old stick with 2 new ones but I also have someone to hand my old stick down to. (I got my brother Elite for Christmas so we could play together) ;)

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck and fly safe Commander!

  1. You should note the dates on those reviews. The content currently making up Horizons was released over a period of 3 years (2016-2018), so reviews early on in that time will not be reflective of the current reality.

As for what Horizons gets you, here is a list

  • Planetary landing - Allows you to land on airless planets and drive around on them in a buggy (Surface Reconnaissance Vehicle, or SRV) . This is semi-relevant from the start, as it gives you access to missions with planetary bases as destinations, but not much of a loss.
  • Engineers - These guys will modify/improve your ship's modules for increased/different performance. Not relevant early-mid game until you get into ships you'll want to spend the time/resources engineering as you'll be keeping them long-term. This is also pretty much mandatory for PVP.
  • Ship-launched fighters - Allows certain ships to equip a fighter hanger and launch a small, NPC-piloted parasite fighter to provide additional firepower. The smallest ship that can equip said hangar is the Keelback, which is a "Combat Freighter" that costs 2.5m credits. It has a typical 2 medium/2 small weapons loadout, middling shields, good armour, and horrible manoeuvrability, but the fighter allows it to punch far above its weight class. Without said fighter, the ship is pretty pointless. The next ship above that that can use one is the Federal Gunship, a 35m credit heavy combat ship that requires naval rank (which requires significant grinding), the Krait MkII, a medium multipurpose ship similar to the Python, but more combat oriented, and the Alliance Crusader, a variant of the Chieftain (see below). From there, all the others are big ships that cost north of 100m credits, and two of those require naval ranks. My fighter writeup has additional information on this subject.
  • Multi-crew - This allows you to have multiple human players controlling a single ship, with the extra people either controlling turrets or flying the above fighters. This is the most early-game relevant thing, as it would allow you to join the crew of a more experienced player with a larger ship to learn from them. However, this feature is not much used.
  • The Dolphin and Beluga passenger liners - These are smaller and larger versions of Saud Kruger's Orca passenger liner which is available in the base game. These three ships are the only ones in the game that are able to equip Luxury-class passenger cabins that are required for some passenger missions. The Dolphin can be relevant fairly early game if you are interested in doing such missions, as the ship only costs just under 1m credits (as opposed to the Orca, which is almost 50m). But if you aren't interested in doing passenger missions, they are mostly irrelevant, though the Beluga has been used by some as a non-traditional exploration ship. Its extremely large fuel tank allows very long periods between refuelling, allowing for long stints of neutron boosting.
  • The Alliance Chieftain - A mid-range medium fighter created through a partnership between The Alliance and Lakon Spaceways. Lorewise, it's designed for Thargoid combat and as such has quite a strong hull for its class.
  • The Alliance Challenger - A Chieftain variant with different weapons, more armour, and more shields, though not quite as manoeuvrable.
  • The Alliance Crusader - Another Chieftain variant that trades out a hardpoint for a fighter hangar.
  • The Krait MkII - A medium multirole ship made by Faulcon DeLacy and inspired by the Krait Lightspeeder from previous Elite games. Similar to the Python, but more combat oriented, with ship launched fighter capability. Also features a unique underslung cockpit that gives excellent views, including of the pair of medium hardpoints flanking it, making it one of the few ships that allow you to see your weapons deploying and shooting.
  • The Krait Phantom - New in 3.3, this Krait variant trades out the fighter capability for greater speed and manoeuvrability.
  • The Mamba - New in 3.3, this race-inspired high-end medium combat ship from Zorgon
Peterson provides some competition to the Fer-de-Lance with heavier weapons (1H2L2S) and higher speeds, though it isn't quite as good in the turns.
  • Thargoid planetary stuff - Horizons is required to access AX and Guardian weaponry, which is needed for fighting thargoid interceptors. Scouts can be taken on with conventional weaponry, though not as effectively as with the AX and Guardians stuff.
  • Tech Brokers - These guys offer new and experimental tech, both of human and Guardian origin. Weapons, FSD boosters, Guardian-inspired ship launched fighters, etc.
  • Materials traders - These guys will let you trade out engineering materials, so you can swap out what you don't need for what you do.

In total, I would strongly recommend getting Horizons.

On the controller matter, the basic controlelr will work fine. I (playing on PC) personally find a HOTAS to be more immersive, but the basics are fine for play. If you do opt for a stick, there is only one worthwhile HOTAS for Xbox , which is the Thrustmaster HOTAS One. It's a Xbox-compatible clone of their HOTAS 4 (which is its equivalent for PS4), which is basically the PC/PS3 HOTAS X with upgraded internal hardware. There's a second "option" in the HORI Ace Combat 7 HOTAS, but it is apparently utter garbage.

As for grind, you never need to travel across the milky way. Almost the entirety of civilization is concentrated in "the Bubble", which is a 500-ish lightyear sphere around the Sol system (where Earth is). Outside the Colonia region (a second smaller Bubble about 21000ly from Sol near the galactic core) and a handful of scattered deep space outposts, the vast majority of the galaxy is unexplored emptiness. Travelling to the far edge of the galaxy is basically one of the game's go-climb-Everest activities. There's no inherent point to it, except if it's something you want to do. I'm personally on my way back from such a journey.

That said, travelling can be a bit of a time drain within the Bubble. Certain ships, particularly ones oriented towards combat, have short jump ranges, meaning that travelling across the Bubble can take tens of jumps. Though with engineering (which I mentioned above in the Horizons features) and the right modules, this can be alleviated greatly.

As for grind, much of the grind has been alleviated. Methods of making money are far faster than they used to be, with it being totally achievable to make over a hundred million credits per hour. There are still "grindable" things like the naval ranks, but it's not necessary to do that.

As for game activities, this graphic gives a fair rundown of what there is in this game. The game is basically a really huge sandbox game. There's not much in-game guiding you into most activities, so you really need outside resources, like the official forums, this subreddit and related ones and other sites and communities, like Inara and discords.

First thing I will tell you off the bat, get something that's in your budget.

Second... let's talk about what type of setup you want...

HANDS ON THROTTLE AND STICK
-
HOTAS
-

You have multiple options, starting with the Thrustmaster HOTAS-X.

At around $50, it gives a satisfying first hotas experience.

Moving up the ladder, you get to the T16000M and it's FCS pack.

If you are lucky, you can get this pack on sale for as low as $89.99 on Amazon, and it offers a great package with plenty of toggles and buttons to fully accommodate E:D's controls. You can even add pedals later on down the line, or pick them up as part of one big package.

Further up the price ladder is the X52 suite of controls. Two options are available, in the flavors of the X52 FCS at around $150 and the X52 PRO at around $200. The differences between the two are less pronounced than the jump from the HOTAS-X to the T16000, but it has some "nice" features for scripting and supposedly higher quality components.

Granted, even after Logitech purchased Saitek, the build quality on these former Saitek sticks is ... so-so.

Another great option is CH's products.

Throttle.

Stick.

CH PRO PEDALS

Despite other offerings in the HOTAS world between the X52 Pro, and CH offerings and higher caliber offerings - ignore them.

The X-55 and X-56 are MESSES when it comes to build quality, and it's a crapshoot if you get one that will last.

Your next HOTAS offering is going to be the Thrustmaster Warthog - but you will absolutely need pedals. Which means you're looking at offerings from CH, like the CH PRO PEDALS.

And if you get the warthog, I HIGHLY recommend you use Aussiedroid's scripts and bindings. They are intuitive and utilize the entirety of the throttle and stick.

If it's in your budget, I recommend getting MFG Crosswinds.

Also, VKB makes some T-rudder design pedals that work well.

VKB T-Rudders

However, before anyone tells you differently, or says pedals are shit for yaw. I AGREE, DON'T USE THEM TO YAW. Put yaw on your stick left and right, pitch up and down, and ROLL on your pedals. Right pedal forward, roll right, and left pedal forward roll left. Anyone who does it differently is crippling themselves, especially in PVP. This is a space sim, we don't have to fly space ships like we do aircraft. ROLL ON PEDALS, I'LL SAY IT AGAIN.

Past this point you have offerings from VirPil and VKB, both of which make the best of the best products. They both have better gimbal designs, and stick designs, and come in around $400 for a stick. However, there is no throttle currently, as of this moment, produced by either.

Alternative Setups
------------------
HANDS ON STICK AND STICK
-
HOSAS
-

One way of side stepping the pedals situation is running dual-sticks, or hands on stick and stick. This has a slightly higher initial cost than most of the cheaper HOTAS options, but also negates the needs for pedals. The caveat being you need sticks that can be used in both left and right hands.

But thankfully, Thrustmaster has you covered. They offer the T16000M in a dual-stick package. Or you can purchase them separately.

You can also buy two separate Warthog sticks, at around $200 each, and get Okona (/u/cavortingwebeasties) over at dualsticks.com to convert one over.

VirPil's Mongoose can be setup for ambi use, and VKB will be announcing a left handed Gunfighter grip at SOME point. VKB Gunfighter can be found here.

I have a logitech 3d extreme, I pair it with this https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-TWCS-Throttle-Controller-2960754/dp/B01L28LVUG and I'm very happy. I'm not sure what you mean by thrustmaster 16x I googled that and had no results.

I personally didn't really like strike suit zero, It just has no feeling of freedom for me just do mission A mission B mission C yeah you can kind of customize your loadout but I think the strengh of a spacegame should be your ability to go wherever you want.

So if you want a story driven game, kind of reminisent of halo but in spaceships get SSO.

If you want more freedom to say, mine, Trade/smuggle, Explore (99.x% of the systems have never been visited in ED), Pirate people/pcs, Bounty hunt pirates, join a faction/megapower and go to war get ED.

I played with just the logitech 3d for a while and it's good enough to let you know if you like it before spending more money for the full hotas. It's just kind of awkward flipping that little throttle around while pushing buttons with your fingers.

""I'm curious what I actually have to buy for Elite.""

Just start with Elite Dangerous, if you like it spend the additional 30 on Horizons it gives you access to engineers (Grindy upgrades for your ship) Planetary landings (only on non atmospheric planets, you can also bring a little buggy thing) Guardians (ship launched fighters, little NPC ships to protect you or you can pilot them yourself if you want)

After the 2.4 update which is mostly about thargoids (aliens that we are probably going to be fighting a lot) the next expansions will probably be another payment, I heard they have committed to a 10 year development cycle they kind of sell games as a service? If that makes sense, I'm happy to pay it assuming we keep getting new content.

And yes even with little time to play you'll still have a good time, it's not like you have to log on constantly it'll be there when you get back to it.

EDIT: also with horizons you can do passenger transport missions, basically haul rich people from A to B or maybe they want to do tourism and you go ABCDEFG. Pays well.

Hey there! Welcome to E:D CMDR.

  • 1.- It is pretty good actually, but it takes some time to get used to (same with flightsticks/HOTAS).
  • 2.- 360 controllers do work but I don't have any experience. Seems better than KB+M but you will used KB for a lot of bindings.
  • 3.- One joystick is good enough, but dual joysticks + peddals look amazing!!
OFC you can always go for a HOTAS setup, try Thrustmaster's HOTAS X it is a good starter HOTAS for a fairly reasonable price.
  • 4.- Answered in 3
  • 5.- It is an amazing experience if you are into sci-fi, simulators, and sandbox games. I've sinked more than 200 hours already.
  • 6.- Let's not forget that this is a game, and because of this there are some artificial limitations in order to have a better gameplay experience. But I'd say it is rather accurate.

    Cheers!

Yo my dude. Welcome to Elite.

Question 1: It is honestly up to you how you prefer to play. Do you want the Wild West in multiplayer? Or do you want to just relax and do some space things without being interrupted. I honestly do both depending on the mood im in. Your pilot and assets are implemented into both so honestly it is what you are feeling at the time.

Question 2: You should get it day one. Elite is straight up doo doo without the season pass. It basically adds planetary landing, more ships, engineering, and a ton of other things including all future updates this year. I would say it is basically mandatory.

Question 3: You can but you either have to get Voice Attack and do the free or paid version, which is a seperate add on you can get on steam for 12 bucks.

Also I would recommend picking up a flight stick eventually if you enjoy the game. The experience is so much better than mouse and keyboard. I started off with this .https://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitech-extreme-3d-pro-gaming-joystick-silver-black/5796515.p?skuId=5796515
After about 100 hours I decided to get this flight stick as it was designed with elite in mind and much better built

If you need any help with any aspect of the game I would recommend watching CMDR Exigeous videos on youtube as I believe he makes fantastic tutorials for new and advanced players.

Just got the game like maybe 2 weeks ago: I'm using two joysticks. Seems to work pretty well. The pitch on one of them is pretty fucked so I just ordered another. That $33 logitech one. Used it before and it's decent. If you can afford that I'd def say go for it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009OY9U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looking forward to it getting here. Current setup is roll/pitch on right stick, yaw and forward/reverse thrust on left stick. Buttons for up/down and left/right on each stick, and flight assist off in a prominent spot. When this stick comes in since it has a twist rudder I'll might fiddle things around. I do a huge amount of flying with flight-assist off and the setup seems to work pretty well.

Like I said, if you can afford that stick it's probably a pretty good buy! You can do roll, pitch, and yaw with it, it has a throttle controller, lots of buttons, and a D-pad under the thumb that you can use for thrusters. Probably do fore/back/left/right on that part, and then up/down on the adjacent buttons.

I also have a logitech G27 and have been fooling around with using the pedals. Mostly I use the shifter controller part for elite. http://i.imgur.com/qGj0kgJ.jpg

D-pad and buttons are nice to have for systems.

Tried the setup with a friends Oculus and it maps pretty well to the HOTAS seen in the game, since the left stick does forward/reverse thrust.

u/Taco-Pterodactyl · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Yes, the game supports wing play, with the maximum wing housing 4 commanders. This is best used while partaking in combat, however wing missions allow you to trade as well. Exploration isn't the best wing activity, however you could journey alongside one another in the same instance.

Controllers are great, however I fully recommend a HOTAS after you've learned the game. The only thing better for E:D than a HOTAS is VR, once you have both the game becomes a truly remarkable experience. I recommend this guy here: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA

u/Peverson · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I would add a cheaper option below this to at least test out VR before investing in a headset. I personally use my iPhone X with the app iVRy and a 25 dollar phone headset and I thinks quite enjoyable. I play Elite in VR this way almost exclusively. So here is a tier lower for a truly "entry level" price. I think this will personally hold me over until the next gen of VR comes out in a few years.

u/SnakeyesX · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous
  1. The fact that there is no wipe will not effect you very much. It just means backers are 3 weeks ahead and played some with slightly different rules. Sure some people made mega bucks through exploiting, but that probably would have happened anyway.Functionally it's no different than if you jumped into the game 3 weeks late

  2. The learning cliff is pretty steep. There are tutorials that you can download after pre order that will help you out a whole lot, but also reading about the game will also prepare you. Here is my favorite noob tutorial. Unlike eve though, you can start fighting other ships as soon as you install the game.

  3. Picking up missions is the best way to learn to play the game. It's mostly just trading from one station to another, but getting familiar with your ship is the most important thing. After that you can try out the stuff I linked to earlier without linked missions.

  4. Some people prefer KB/M, others prefer xbox controllers, but its the overall consensus that having either two joysticks or a HOTUS will improve your gameplay. Here is a cheap but very effective HOTUS

  5. The game has a wide range of graphics settings, and if you have at least a mediocre computer you should be able to run it.
u/GobHoblin87 · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X and I love it. Highly recommended if you're on a budget. It runs for $50 on Amazon. Another good choice, and $20 less, is this stick right here: https://amzn.com/B001MGNWDI. I used that stick before I bought my HOTAS and I really liked it. The buttons and trigger click nicely and the heavy spring adds a really nice amount of resistance. Personally, I like a heavy amount of resistance on a flight stick. I gave that stick to my buddy who plays E:A and he liked it so much he bought a second one and plays with a dual stick setup.

u/sushi_cw · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

There aren't a lot of cheap HOTAS options. Some things to consider:

  • T-Flight HOTAS X is relatively cheap at $50, but has relatively few buttons to work with and mediocre sensors that can make fine aiming difficult. A lot of people use it and are very happy with it though.
  • T.16000M FCS is the next step up, and although it's fairly new it seems to be getting a pretty good reception. It's over your budget at $129 though.
  • Dual joysticks is another totally viable and fun way to play, although it may take a bit more work to find a way to control all thrusters that feels natural (some people use twist for forward/reverse, some add rudder pedals, etc). There are obviously lots of possible combinations, one that works for your budget is a T-16000m combined with a Logitech Extreme 3d pro, for $95 combined.

u/M0b1u5 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Better than that even!

A GREAT stick, for just $34.99 This is the best stick on the market for ED - bar none. You'll note I said it's the best for ED - it's not the best for flight simulation, which ED isn't!

Then, when you have become accustomed to using a stick, which can take a while (think "gentle", and "subtle") you will have saved enough to buy the best throttle ever made.

u/IncuBMaddy · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Indeed this is less costly, but really an old model (an I am pretty sure you can find used one very cheap like 20£).

But if you can save up you should go for this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-Hotas-PC/dp/B01H6KXGDY?ref_=bl_dp_s_mw_1656523031

The throttle is actually what is interesting. And you can buy stick and throttle separately on the amazone trust master store.

u/Acaedus · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I never played on the PC, but I have it on the XBOX. honestly, I don't think you'll be missing much. The controls are super solid, and if it doesn't quite fit what you need, you can always tweak it. I've personally never had any issues with it, in fact, I'm still using the default controls.

Also, on PS4, if you REALLY want a HOTAS, you can definitely order some for cheap. I'm debating it myself.

But all in all, the controls are super solid! I wouldn't be very worried.

Also, check out /r/ElitePS for the PS4 player of Elite!

u/BrutalAttis · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Some "higher end" links for you:

  • Ch Throttle -- IMO still the best throttle until VKB/Virpil
  • MFG Crosswind
  • VKB
  • Virpil - great dual stick options here. I liked VKB just a tad more, like the additional button more on VKB. But Virpil has other things going for it too. Like better service!
  • X56 Lotitech - make sure its the latest version, not saitek crap ... even re-branded saitek to logitech. Logitech recently released an update. QA is a huge issue with X56 range.

Don't use this for E:D Warthog that is my 2c worth. Its maybe looks all metal but has some plastic internals and really is not for space flight sims. Allot of people bitch about the nipple on the throttle. So just my opinion that you should not look at it.

    On the lower end:

  • Thrustmaster T 16000 etc. I have no experience with it. But people like it.
  • X360 controllers etc. some people love it.
  • Mouse and Keybaord -- PvP players swear by it!

Happy stick hunting, fly safe CMDR o7!

u/agr1277 · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I only started playing a week or two ago, and have absolutely fell in love with the game. My #1 piece of advice would be to not get overwhelmed by trying to do or learn everything the game has. Elite has an incredibly wide amount of things to do, and they are all getting deeper/more complex all the time (from what I've read). You could be an explorer and get lost in the 400 billion stars. Space truck, finding awesome trade routes and make a ton of money. Plenty of other options for stuff to do as well. I personally am just flying around extraction sites doing bounty hunting. The ship combat is great, and the addition of a HOTAS and VR Headset makes it one of the best games I've played.

I recommend the Thrustmaster T.Flight, cheap and works really well in ED: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CXYMFS

u/STR4NGE · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Those look pretty awesome. I was actually considering getting one of those (except the logitech one) awhile back but opted not to as it didn't have an axis control on it. I actually pulled the trigger on a used one of these last night. I got it used for $90. My thinking is this...
it's black and grey like the 3d pro(OCD approved), the ratings are very good, has a great resale value on ebay and most of all it's a throttle style. I'm going to be doing some demoing on the DK2 so people will "get it" while in the demo for flight sims and ED.

u/amart591 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I knew nothing about them and didn't want to get a super expensive one without ever having used one or played Elite at the time. This is the HOTAS4 from thrustmaster. You can pick up a HOTAS X from them for $10 cheaper but this one works with the PS4 too (not that many games support it but with VR on the way, better safe than sorry). Love it so far, can't really give it any negatives other than that the cable between the two pieces being a bit short but that's where the hobby part kicks in.

u/Nacho321 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

That is a very good question! So, here's my take on it.
I started playing the game using an xbox 360 controller. It was pretty comfortable, and got the job done, but a lot of things weren't possible because of the lack of buttons. I then decided to buy Voice Attack, which allows you to give voice commands that will execute a sequence of buttons (you create the plan) and that worked for me for... well, most of beta and part of gamma.
I recently purchased the Thrustmaster X (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CXYMFS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that cost me around $30 on black Friday, and you can feel the difference. It's more comfortable, but the greatest difference is the immersion. I now rarely use the VoiceAttack, since all the required/important keys are available there. If you choose to buy the Thrustmaster X, PM me and I'll gladly share my key bindings with you!

u/Th3bigM00se · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I for one don't use the mouse to control my ship. If you have one, use an xbox one controller. But I prefer to use a joystick and throttle. I find that using a joystick makes the game much better. If you are on a budget I found that this works great. If you have the money to spare then this is an amazing HOTAS. Now you can also buy the stick and throttle separately on that second one if you would like. Just some options for you. Good luck.

u/Vagrant_Charlatan · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

How'd you get here from /r/All? At like 300/400 or so, wouldn't this be impossibly far back? Was it rising? Anyway....

Elite Dangerous is a religious experience for space nerds. I'd heard of people crying from experiencing ED in VR and thought it was an exaggeration, but it can definitely happen depending on your state of mind at the time. I've had VR since the DK1 and Elite Dangerous made me shed a small tear the first time I tried it in the DK2 and then again in the CV1 (I have a Vive as well). I don't think any game has ever made me cry before, and ED did it off sheer beauty alone. Approaching and docking in a several kilometer wide space station, scooping fuel from a distant star, blasting pirates for money while dodging between asteroids on a planet's ring, getting outgunned and having to panic hyper jump to the nearest star... ED is a very majestic experience. There are times you really feel like you're Star-Lord or something just trying to make a name for yourself.

That being said, the 'mile wide and an inch deep' assertion is 100% true despite what dedicated fans will tell you. The game play is complicated, but you figure it out quickly. The problem is you don't get a whole lot of variety, and the bigger ships take a long time to acquire. Still, the base game is fairly cheap and is a must buy if you have a VR headset. Pick up a HOTAS like the $50 T-Flight Thrustmaster X, which can be used in other games, and you'll definitely have a blast for a solid 10 - 20 hours regardless of whether you'll want to stick around. If you like it, horizons (for landing on rocky planets) is fun, and future updates on the roadmap look great.

u/drunkcommenting · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick is both cheap (less than $40) and good. Sure, there are better types of HOTAS for hundreds of dollars, but I have used mine for over 800 hours of ED and love it.

If it's good enough for Isinona, then it is good enough for me.

Note: The throttle and joystick can be separated. That's how I use them.

> I love the touch controllers, but can't afford a HOTAS

The Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X costs 45 Euro, at least on Amazon Germany. At least the PC/PS3 version, that is. There is a version for PC and PS4, which costs 20 Euro more, but I think you won't really need that.

You can even find complete setups online, I suggest checking of this one, for instance. I am using this setting and just swapped "Yaw" and "Roll". This guy did a great job, this setup pretty much coveres everything you need.

When you can afford an Oculus Rift and Touch controllers, you can also afford the 45 Euro for this Hotas, I guess. And its a difference like day and night, playing this game with Rift and Hotas is amazing.

I almost immediately forget that I am sitting in my chair, feet on the table and with the Thruster attached to my chair in the cheapest way possible. When you have those 45 bucks, I highly suggest getting that thing.

u/wrath_of_grunge · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

it kind of depends on a few factors.

  • How much you want to spend.

  • How much use you get out of it. This is tied to how much value you'll get out of your purchase.

  • How high quality of a stick do you want.

there's a number of different setups out there for different price ranges. the Thrustmaster setups seem to be of a higher quality than the Saitek/Logitech setups.

personally i won't pay more than $100 for a stick that doesn't feature Force Feedback. this can be a little difficult when you want a new stick. i've been using a MS SideWinder Force Feedback 2 stick. it's old, but they're very good. they work well with pretty much everything, and in some games the Force Feedback is active.

in games like Elite, it doesn't really use the FF feature, so it just puts a set amount of tension on the stick. i like this better than spring based sticks, and after nearly 20 years of use, my stick is still pinpoint precise, with no real deadzone. i actually have to set a small deadzone because the stick is a bit too sensitive.

this doesn't solve the throttle problem, but i intend to fix that by adding a Thrustmaster Throttle.
u/Noctrin · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

i picked up one of these on sale at NCIX for 30$

http://www.amazon.ca/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U

It's simple and not flashy, but works really well. I never owned an expensive controller to compare, but it feels solid, it has a wide base and is very stable, only real downside is the throttle is not full reverse-forward, but only forward. You can map it in game to make it do both, but it makes it awkward to use..

Controls are very accurate, with a bit of deadzone settings, you can easily negate the effects of how your hand rests on it. Overall, it's miles better than keyboard and mouse and much better than my xbox controller. For 30$ the price was also right.

u/Dragoniel · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Yep!

I am using these bracket pole mounts, which seem to be super popular for this particular purpose - and for good reason! Works splendidly. They can be turned and pivoted in various ways, making them super adaptable.

I have used pieces of wood to attach things to the flat armrest things - not exactly difficult to make, given that I live in a village: http://i.imgur.com/ZUV2EWM.jpg

I've seen others use rubber doorstops and similar things to keep things in place where wood is not readily available.

I should really make a separate post about my setup...

u/kinggimped · 8 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Unless you're rich and just happy to splurge on whatever's the top of the line, just get a cheap one to start with. Most people start with the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X, which is cheap and plasticky but it has all the buttons you need and works absolutely fine. I have 1000+ hours in E:D and have never felt the need to upgrade from this HOTAS, though I'll probably get something better when it eventually breaks.

If you find you really like the HOTAS experience and feel like you want to dump some money into it, then you can get something like the Thrustmaster T 1600M or the Logitech X52.

And if you really like it and want to go higher end, there are a few options for that. Just be warned that they start to get real expensive.

u/pandawombat · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Congrats! Elite in VR is amazing, I could never play it on a flat screen again.

As for tips to improve quality, there are in-game supersampling options. I can't give you too much information on that, as I don't have a good enough system to utilize it, but it's there.

I'd also suggest looking into getting yourself a HOTAS if you really want to enhance the piloting-a-spaceship feel. I bought the Thrustmaster T16000m + throttle and using it with a VR headset is just amazing. Elite even has an in-game controls template specifically for that setup - you can configure it if you want, but I found the defaults to be just fine. I mounted the joystick and throttle to my chair, and combined with VR it really feels like I'm sitting in the cockpit of a spaceship. Can't imagine playing the game without it!

u/commiekaze · 14 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I would like to suggest two things in addition to the two you listed. First, the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS is an amazing entry stick and you can get it for $40 USD nowadays. It is a great stick and works very well with ED. I personally use this and have felt no need to upgrade. It even twists.

TM T-Flight HOTAS

If you are looking for something more serious, do consider buying CH products. CH has been in the game for a very long time and are still considered among the best for sim space and flight games. They look simple, but they are reliable and have a great long-standing name behind them.

CH Sticks and other products

The X55 Rhino by Saitek is also a possibility. Looks cool for sure.

Is it this one?

If so id actually be very interested in investing in one. The price isnt bad and if its a great as people make it out to be, could definitely be worth it.

I think i'd like to add a keyboard converter to my setup as well. Wouldnt be bad to have the stick, throttle and a keyboard just like the in-game ships do.

u/cmd_casse · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I use and recommend the CH Products Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals

The CH devices don't look sexy but are highly functional. There are plenty of hats and buttons to map everything you need without having to look at your controllers (great for VR). The pedals are a little close together and others could recommend better, but the throttle should be a standard due to the analogue thumb stick that is perfect for vertical and lateral thrusters.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Edit: just saw you have a Vive so removed Rift recommendation.

u/TheCaptain53 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

If you're using a VR headset, then DEFINITELY look into getting a HOTAS, will increase immersion 10-fold.

I've heard lots of good things about the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X, pretty cheap. Can be had from Amazon UK for £30: Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick (PC/PS3) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6JGGybNSJA3JN

Apologies if questions about gear/peripherals aren't allowed.

I'm loving this game but the KBM controllers are starting to get annoying now that I'm playing more frequently again. I'm looking at HOTAS but I'm just not sure what I should be looking for in this kind of controller.

Right now I'm leaning towards the T-1600M throttle/joystick as it fits my budget the best.

I've found multiple sources that say the X52 Pro is one of the best sticks for Elite, although I'm skeptical of the $70 price hike being worth it.

Will the T-1600M work well for playing Elite, or should I save for a little while longer and jump for the X52 Pro?

In case it's relevant, right now I'm predominantly exploring in the game, though I'm hoping to get more into the combat side of things.

u/bryitis · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I would recommend the T16000M. You can start with it well enough, using joystick + keyboard. And later on if you are interested in expanding for better controls you can buy a CH Pro Throttle.

IMO, The CH Pro Throttle + T16000M is the best control combo you get buy for less than $400. With this combo you get plenty of buttons, plenty of analog axis to handle Throttle, Lateral/Vertical strafing, Pitch/Yaw/Roll, and the sensitivity/accuracy of these two devices won't even be beaten by other top of the line gear.

CH Pro Throttle at Amazon (currently $98)

T16000M at Amazon (currently $49)

T16000M at Microcenter (currently $24)

I play on pc and have never played on ps4, but i can say that if you have a pc that can run it I would recommend playing it on that as the community is larger and in general nice guys.
I use a controller for this game but nothing really comes close to the HOTAS systems. If you are looking for a budget system the community seems to like the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X. Its cheap and hailed as a good starter set.

u/HeroOfOne · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Sorry for the question which I'm sure gets asked here probably every day. I could have sworn I saved a post from a few months back that laid this out but I just can't find it.

FINALLY got my Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_nAssAb3Q05WD7) and installed Elite Dangerous. I got this game specifically to play with my new VR headset, and have been avoiding playing it until I got the flight stick.

I only made it to the second tutorial mission before realizing I had to bind something (vertical thrust). I remember reading a post about how the stick I bought was a good introductory one, but it was pretty basic and I'd have to use like... an alternate button to get everything mapped properly? So I tried holding down a button and pressed the buttons that horizontal thruster is mapped to at the same time in hopes that would map the vertical thruster in that way... but it didn't work. It gave me the message saying that the horizontal thruster is mapped to that, and asked if I was sure I wanted to change it?

So is there a particular button on this stick that is used to hold down as the "alternate" button? Or am I just doing something wrong?

I've read a lot of reviews and advice saying that I shouldn't just copy someone else's mapping and it's better if I map it myself as I go... but I'm kinda bummed I got stuck already with figuring out how to do the mapping itself.

Thanks for any and all advice!

PS: The button I held down attempting to use in sync as the "alternate" button was button #8, for those that have the stick.

I just got into this game recently, and have been really enjoying it. I've been looking into getting a HOTAS, and I think I've narrowed it down to two models, but I have concerns about both of them.

The X52 Pro seems quite nice, but I'm a bit concerned about the QA, I've heard a lot of them fail (especially recently with logitech), is there any truth to that?

The other one I've been looking at is the Thrustmaster T.16000M which seems to have really good build quality and an excellent throttle, but I'm a bit worried the joystick doesn't really have enough buttons for elite. Any advice on which way to go (or a different way entirely) would be appreciated!

u/ElectricZ · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

CH Products makes a fine line of HOTAS setups. They put nothing into looks but the quality is second to none. CH Products actually makes controls for military simulators and industrial purposes and makes game controllers on the side. I had a CH rig in the 90's and got rid of it because no one was making simulations by 2004 but it worked perfectly until I sold it. When ED came out, I decided I needed a replacement. I looked at Saitek and while they looked cool, they didn't feel right. So I looked and found CH was still in business, except now they had graduated to USB instead of serial ports... But from my experience of the new models they are the same quality and handle great.

Anyway, a high-end throttle and joystick will run $300. They have less expensive models but the high end is the way to go. But, if you have Amazon prime, you can get both the stick and throttle for $50 each, for a total of $200. It's a steal. And the Pro Throttle has an analog thumbstick which is perfect for lateral/vertical thrust control in ED.

Check 'em out.

Yea I actually learned this game with the Xbox controller when I played on Xbox One. I'm using what's called a HOTAS or Hands on Throttle and Stick. This is a much more immersive way to play as it's actually what your avatar in the game is using as well. Thrust is controlled with the throttle and rotation is controlled with the flight stick. Still a difficult game to learn but if you like space, science, and creating your own stories and experiences it's definitely worth another go. The first HOTAS I owned was a very good entry stick called the Thrustmaster T-Flight X which is about 50 bucks.

DONT GET A FLY 5. Get the T-Flight HOTAS X. It's cheaper and way easier to use. The little side throttle just doesn't work the same way that a real hotas works.

If you're looking for more button input, and you have a mic, get voice attack and ASTRA.

I currently am on my second FLY 5 and it suffers from yaw drift failures on a consistent basis. They usually last about 4 months. The T-Flight HOTAS may be cheaper, but it has more usable functionality than the FLY 5. Secondly, combat boosting with FA off are far easier with the T-Flight HOTAS, since the throttle has a center lock for forward AND reverse thrusting on the same axis. Subsystem sniping is also easier since the yaw paddles can be configured to cycle between them easily.

Voice commands allow you to easily deploy chaff or heatsinks, do evasive maneuvers quickly, or bind controls to voice commands for keyboardless immersion. And all this can easily be done for the price of a FLY 5.

DONT GET IT.

u/DozTK421 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

First, sorry for my shortcutting on the joystick. I was referring to the Thrustmaster T16000M. Same idea, basically, other than I am less interested in the full SIM, and am more likely to go with a HOSAS rather than HOTAS experience. As a side, I have a passionate interest in peripheral interfaces overall. I worked with a rehabilitation center in a Kinesiology College at a University, and I helped with the IT for laboratories which were using video game technology to combine with engineering to help people with disabilities. That included everything from people with MS interacting with Ocular Rift, to wheelchair rehab, etc. So I really geek out on ultra high dpi controls.

You did answer my question on that I would need an expansion for planetary landings and buggy exploration. That is a thing I like about the game's potential. I watched some videos by ObsidianAnt and they did interest me.

I think for me to subscribe, realizing that I'll have to spend some cash to do what I want and face some grindy elements, I'll basically see if I can find some social interaction that makes it worth my while.

u/JaxonPavan · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

From a personal preference. I am not a huge fan of the second one and how close the throttle is to the stick, which is why my recommendation might sound weird at first, but I personally would recommend the Thrustmaster Hotas X. While it looks a lot like the black widow. It should be pointed out that is separates in the middle and allows you to space the throttle and the stick apart up to about two feet. That should allow you to place it in the most comfortable position for you.

I got one of those when I first started playing Elite Dangerous, and I loved it. I did end up replacing it with an X52 Pro because I wanted Moar buttons, and I got the 52 on a good deal. Yet a few times it has crossed my mind to go back to my Hotas X, but I keep it as a back up should my 52 break on me.

Anyway That would be my recommendation, it will give you all the functions you are looking for when playing Elite Dangerous. You might still need to use your keyboard for secondary tasks but primary should be covered by it, and while I am not sure what price it is for you, but in my part of the world it cost less right now than the Stick and throttle you posted.

I used that for a while, until I gave it to my son.

Eventually I wanted one with even more buttons, so I went for the X52 Pro.

Did not like the T16000M design, or the Warthog or the X65, they all feel weird, they don't feel right, the design of the X52 series and the T-flight feels perfect to the hand. They feel natural. Doesn't feel clunky, the other ones like the X65 rhino, Warthog and T16000M feels like you are driving a Hauler Semi Truck.

All of the advice given here is great about what software to buy. The game is absolutely playable with mouse and keyboard, and a lot of the top combat pilots prefer it. However, if you care about immersion I highly recommend at least a flight stick, if not a HOTAS.

so, this is really all based on a person's preference. there are quite a few HOTAS's that are used for this game. they vary in price, quality, and number of buttons/hats/switches/etc.

here are some examples of "reasonably priced" ones:

Thrustmaster T.16000M
https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492012194&sr=8-1&keywords=thrustmaster+1600

You can always go to Amazon and/or do google searches for reviews and other HOTAS systems. I hope this has helped you though. Good luck, and fly safe, CMDR. o7

u/marine678 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous
  1. What is your price range, there are good $50 ones and ones that go up $450. For cheap ones this is pretty good, for expensive this, mid range this.
  2. There is the base game and Horizons, I believe that you have to buy the base game to get Horizons (might be wrong). I would recommend that you buy base game and see if you like it, then wait for Horizons stuff get fleshed out, its kinda bare-bones at the moment.
  3. This has a ton of information about the game and links to guides and videos that will help you get started.
u/Osric_Rhys_Daffyd · 4 pointsr/EliteDangerous

It really depends on your budget. If this is your first space sim game, you might want to wait before sinking major money, for even though the high end peripherals do have decent resale value, should you realize you just can't justify the high price or owning a space sim setup at all, it might be best just to take it slow in the beginning.

Now when you say "flight sim" I think of sim pits, which can get out of hand rather quickly, with extra peripherals beyond a simple joystick or HOTAS. Are you planning on getting into flight sims themselves? That's a whole other ball of wax, and a lot more money potentially, as you buy more specialized peripherals, like MFDs, radio panels, instrument panels, and so on.

So assuming you don't want an actual flight sim pit, I'd start out with a single joystick and the keyboard to ease into things. After a bit you might decide you want a throttle, or just start with a TM T-Flight HOTAS X, which is the cheapest you can go for a HOTAS.

I recommend the TM T16000M stick, which you can get for under $50 and is much more accurate than anything else at that price point, paired with a CH throttle if you want accuracy and economy combined with the ability to program the hell out of your peripherals for maximum flexibility.

One thing to suggest is to look into TrackIR, I've seen so many vids of this game with it I'm getting one as soon as possible, it seems to add so much to the gameplay and immersiveness its almost a must.

52 bucks and worth every cent. For this game you need a H.O.T.A.S. Why? Because little maneuvers at mining, landing, taking off or hiding behind an asteroid needs little touches. I used Logitech 3D Extreme, but the throttle thing is not so sensitive, there is very little difference between %100 throttle and %50 throttle, but with HOTAS its really nice and easy, you don't get yourself killed after mining 50 pieces of palladium, while docking.

And you also need voiceattack. That makes controls also easy.

u/CCninja86 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Hmmm...the X-52 Pro isn't too expensive. Lower priority though I think for me. Probably get the new NVIDIA Shield first for our "dumb" Smart TV (running joke in our family 'cos it's a cheap Smart TV and actually isn't very smart :p) in the lounge, turn it into a proper Smart TV. Already have a Steam Link + Steam Controller for the downstairs TV. Question: what's that shorter, fatter one with the screen for? Throttle by the look of it? https://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS

The non-PRO is like $8 cheaper right? If so, might as well get the PRO. You're already spending $150, might as well spend $158 for the extra build quality.

u/fizzlefabble · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

This one is probably the best you're going to get for sub $100. Every button map you find for this setup for Elite Dangerous is going to have at least one or two 'shift' button modifying triggers. So thruster up/down becomes landing gear/cargo scoop in the map I linked above. The truth of the matter is that it just doesn't have enough buttons for Elite Dangerous if you're trying to get a lot of dedicated triggers, buttons, toggles for everything.

That's not to say you don't get used to it. I enjoy using this and it feels sturdy, fits my desk and while I can afford a nicer HOTAS like the X52 or the X55, I didn't really feel like dropping the coin on it. I got it on Amazon for really cheap and I don't have any complaints for it yet.

When you save the comment it should pop up in your reddit.com/saved on whatever account you're logged in on. You could always just bookmark the links. I've been doing that in a separate folder for a lot of useful Elite Dangerous links I find on the sub.

Mouse and Keyboard yes. I really wanted to play it on a controller because it was more intuitive for me, but mouse and keyboard just perform much better.

HOTAS specifically is a "Hands On Throttle And Stick" set up, where you have a joystick and a throttle. This is a pretty highly recommended budget one and is the one I have ordered:

Best bang-for-your-buck Joystick IMHO is the T-Flight HOTAS. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Warthog or the X52, but its a good way of getting your feet wet without breaking the bank at only £39.00 and it works a treat with ED.

im using the thrustmaster x, its cheap and reliable... have to get a little creative to get all the buttons bound, but using the 5-7 buttons on the throttle and a direction on the hat you can get pretty far. Cheap way to see if you like the throttle, a stick and keyboard is pretty close though

u/crazboy84 · 12 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I used some bracket pole mounts which are linked below to mount to the chair arm then used industrial strength velcro to attach the HOTAS to the mount for easy removal. It aligns perfectly with the placement ingame and adds serious immersion in VR it gives the sense that my arms are the arms in game.

I use this in VR and love it! - https://amazon.com/gp/product/B01KCHPRXA
I like that one due it's mini joystick on the throttle which is perfect for lateral and vert control thrusting in combo with your main joystick.
*personally i wouldn't bother with foot pedals unless you can't live without them. Most HOTAS will have enough btns, axis to do everything you need in ED.

u/Kuro_Neko00 · 5 pointsr/EliteDangerous

The Thrustmaster 16000M, either by itself, as a hotas, or as a hosas is regarded as a good entry level stick by many.

edit: best way to make credits in-game by far is mining, either surface mining for painite or core mining for void opals. Easily 100m/hr or more if you know what you're doing, and/or follow one of the many guides on youtube. I can't personally advise though as I've been actively avoiding it. I don't want to be rich so quick I have no idea what to do with it.

u/Color_blinded · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

So I just received my Vive and am eager to play this game with it now. But I must buy some joystick(s) first. So my questions is:

Is it better to have two joysticks, or a joystick and throttle?

Or even more specifically, which of these two options would be best? two of these joysticks, or one of these.

u/claycle · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I'm not religious about it. My Saitek X52 Pro, which was ready and able for 2 years, finally just broke down and stopped working. Unfortunately, Logitech recently bought Saitek and the current reviews are not positive (I assume there are some build/quality issues as they integrate).

So, I just bought, but have not yet received, a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS Controller, which is not-too-pricey and seemed to have solid reviews, especially related to ED, when googled.

If the reviews had been better on the Logtech X55, I would have gone there as I was generally happy with my X52 Pro (although, in retrospect, it was my second one since I had to RMA the first stick right after I bought it....hrrrrm).

So, I am hoping the Thrustmaster:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KCHPRXA

is a keeper, at least until and if Steel Series comes out with something.

u/Anarch157a · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Doesn't have to be an Xbox controler. Any USB game controler should work, as long as it's recognized by Windows as such.

Of course, OP, if you already have an Xbox gamepad, you can use it and save some money. But as someone who tried mouse/kb, gamepad, regular (non-HOTAS) joystick and HOTAS, I can give you my word that a HOTAS is a great investment. I recomend this one: http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Playstation-3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405515293&sr=8-1&keywords=hotas

It's the same I have. Great stick for an excelent price.

I got a pair of these for use with this dual joystick setup and they work perfectly.

I'd say the extreme 3D pro is of higher quality, so they should work even better. Can't go wrong... at least Elite is EXTREMELY customizable as far as controls go. Probably the game with the best keybinding options I've ever seen.

u/sp4c3p3r5on · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I got the Thrustmaster 16000.m FCS HOTAS. There are nicer sticks out there, but based on my research this one is good quality and costs $99 for throttle and stick where doing better can cost $250+ for just the stick. The only gripe I could find would be the throttle lube wearing out and the rails sticking, which can be remedied by a tube of silicone grease/oil.

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA

I think if you have the money to sink into it - the CH setup is probably the way to go like HoochCow mentioned, but I've only done some basic research into this stuff in order to get off the ground in elite and the $99 price was right for the Thrustmaster.

u/Serohs · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Not for table but for an office chair these things are awesome and there is a whole DIY fixed posting over at /r/hotas about these.

http://www.amazon.com/Bracket-Pole-Mount-VESA75-100/dp/B00PZDB2HM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1425649423&sr=1-1&keywords=Bracket+Pole+Mount+VESA75%2F100

I have a set and wow what a difference it has made being able to lean back into my chair and fly. You can use zip ties and run your hotas wiring underneath your chair, etc... But sheeeeesh these have doubled in price since people started using them for Hotas mounts.

u/Calvin-Parsons · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Thrustmaster HOTAS X, best joystick and throttle system i've ever used. Had it for 4 years now and it's still going strong, plus the price is great, it's only $50!

It may not have all the buttons for everything. but it does support function keys, so you can press a key and every button can do something different.

Also, never buy Saitek, it look's cool, but the joystick will snap off in some high speed dogfight or the buttons will just stop working - in my experience anyway.

u/DarkHand · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

For everything in part 1, I found it all at my local Home Depot. Shipping that kind of heavy stuff would be pretty expensive. For everything I ordered online, I try to always include an Amazon link.

For clamp-type systems, try searching for 'vesa pole mount'. Something like this is what people tend to use when they go the clamp route.

Good luck!

u/Orkekum · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

well, it's rather fun, you have a throttle and joystick, feels more like you are in a cockpit. (i know a lot of people swearing on the keyboard and mouse) if you really want to try, you could buy the cheap hotas X one, by whoever made it, and if you dont like it, am sure many here on ED reddit wants one(inluding me, i got the muhc more expensive saitek X52, so if i visit parents and take my laptop and want to play elite i dont want to take X52 with me, need to get a hotas X >_>)

For those complaining about the expense (and yeah, it can get pricey) there are solutions for you.

You would of course probably enjoy going to an X52 or a Warthog, but this is still a pretty good option.

u/Issues420916 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I know you don't wanna hear it, but the Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS X is $38.99

Also XBox360 controller is perfectly viable.

Hope you can get your keyboard issue fixed till then.

u/Drominus · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I bought the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and not any others for several reasons:

u/ericwdhs · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Yes! I'm playing with a lowly Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and the experience is far better than playing with a controller or mouse. (I did try both for a while.)

It should be noted that my setup is only using that joystick for the stick portion. The buttons and throttle on the base are pretty much untouched. I still control the throttle with the keyboard along with most of the other functions.

u/loomynartyondrugs · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

In case you ever wanna switch to the dark side, I've posted a breakdown of the current hotas situation on the vive subreddit before, lemme see if I can find it.

Found it.

The cheap end would be the T-Flight Hotas X ($50).

On the cheaper mid range side, either the Saitek x52 ($140), or the Saitek x52 Pro ($180)

On the more pricey side of the mid range I can suggest the Saitek x55/x56 ($250)

Top of the Line would be the Thrustmaster Warthog ($400)

Since then thrustmaster also released the T.16000M ($130) which as far as I know was made in communication with Frontier so it should be a pretty good fit for Elite.

u/dnb321 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

The Thrustmaster Hotas X is the best bang/buck especially if you can find it for $40ish.

The setup I'm running is below, I've found it pretty helpful for what I've been doing, the only caveat is that I'm not a huge fan of the Joy-2 button being a combo key as opposed to the secondary fire.

Other than that it's worked out pretty well.

It really depends on your budget is and how crazy you wanna get with it. But if your just getting into the idea of getting/using a HOTAS, this stick as a great place to start:

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8bYQBb08QXMFG

Great value for what it is and adds a lot to the experience of playing Elite IMO.

u/Serantos · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

If you're going to shell out 40-60 dollars for an Xbox controller, you're better off getting a cheaper HOTAS setup. Try the T-Flight HOTAS X. Amazon Link

I've been using that guy for over a year, it's a great first HOTAS. I'll probably buy a nicer one with tax return this year.

u/mourning_lemon · 11 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I've always heard the thrustmaster T.16000m hotas is the best "cheap" hotas

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA

I have one, and love it. As far as lateral/vertical thrusters are concerned, there is an analog stick for your left hand pointer finger on the throttle that works great. The stick itself has HALL Effect sensors (same sensors as the very pricey Warthog stick) and is very accurate. It's mostly plastic of course, but at that price point it's a given. The stick buttons (on the base) are kind of useless in VR, but since you aren't running E:D in VR it isn't an issue.

The only real downside is the throttle lubricant from the factory is pretty garbage. I spent a few minutes taking the base off of the bottom and putting some Nyogel 767a lubricant and it has been perfect since.

u/Pokehunter217 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Ive been looking at a lot of reviews and such, and settled on this t16000 thrustmaster has a pretty good rep and it seems to have better reviews than pretty much anything else under $400. If your budget is big though, ignore this.

Edit: Found someone's keybinds, it has a lot

u/Dr_Death_Defy24 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

>You certainly dont need hotas to enjoy this game.

While I agree, if you have the cash, even for a cheapish HOTAS (like the Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS X) it goes a long way toward making whatever ship your in feel like you're in it.

u/amarkit · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

The game is very playable on M&K or gamepad, but I don't deny that it is much more fun with a HOTAS. I use a CH setup, but apparently the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X is a perfectly fine stick at a reasonable price. I don't play with heard tracking and don't think I'm much the worse for it, but I've considered getting a TrackIR when the bank account permits. I imagine once you start using it you won't want to go back though.

u/misterwizzard · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Do yourself a favor and buy a cheap stick or low-end HOTAS setup.

I started with a Saitek Cyborg and KBD, worked well. It has a good helping of buttons, Z-Axis (twist the stick for YAW) and an integrated analog throttle which is a must have IMO.

Personally I moved up to a HOTAS Watrhog which is a $450 set. My buddy is running on This stick and This Throttle and has just about as much functionality as me. More if you take into account the Warthog doesn't have a Z axis on the stick!

u/burtonsimmons · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

That, that's a really big "it depends".

This Alienware Aurora is less than $1000, and would play the game exceptionally well. Figure you'll spend ~80% of that (give or take 20%) if you're building it yourself. You can go lower-end, but this level is also VR-capable, should you want that in the future.

You can buy a Thrustmaster T16000M HOTAS for $120-150.

You can get a decent nice 24" monitor for $130-$500 (depending on what you want, but a very basic 1080p 24" screen can be had for $130.

Figure $50-$100 for a decent keyboard/mouse as well.

So, summing this all up, if you just buy what I linked you're looking at ~$1300 if you're looking for something modern that will last a while.

u/thebadmf · 4 pointsr/EliteDangerous

You can pick up a thustmaster hotas x for ~£35. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466771869&sr=8-1&keywords=thrustmaster+hotas+x

I have an X55 which was great until the ghosting started so I can't recommend one. A HOTAS really is great.

u/alwaysopenslinks · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I was looking at getting the X52 Pro as a joystick but before I could buy, it skyrocketed in price. I don't know if I want to spend that much now, but might have too. Therefore, I was wondering if the X-55 Rhino might be a better HOTAS for that price or if the X52 is just as good as the X52 pro and what the differences are between the standard and pro.

u/Scyhaz · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I think most people prefer something like a HOTAS like this one. Good price and many seem to like it for its price.

u/Captain_Midnight · 4 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I bought a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro a while back. It's not as good as the Saitek options, but it costs much less. I use the joystick and my keyboard simultaneously to perform certain actions, like sliding. You don't mention what country you live in, but in the US, Amazon has it on sale for $30.

If you decide that a joystick is for you after that, then you can open up your wallet for something fancier.

u/Sunlis · 4 pointsr/EliteDangerous

If you don't already have one, I would at least recommend getting a HOTAS. It was a game-changer when I got one.

Something like this will do you pretty well without breaking the bank: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CdHoxbRBWVVRR

u/NdWar2000 · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I'm thinking you might be better off with an Xbox pad? It's what I use at the moment. But two joysticks will be a cool way to go!

If you do go dual sticks though, that's ~£40 a pair. For £100 you can get a Saitek joystick and thruster combo (x52). A lot of people on here seem to have a good time with Saitek. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saitek-Flight-Controller-System-Joystick/dp/B00030GSJY

u/HJK148 · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Just looked around quickly on Amazon and this one looks like it has a lot of good reviews:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS

There's also the Saitek Fly-5 but the reviews are mixed:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saitek-MCB4330200B2-04-1-Cyborg/dp/B001EYU1VO

Both of these are £40, but the first one has better reviews.

I might think of buying one when I buy E:D. I could always stick with mouse and keyboard, or use an Xbox controller, but the mouse and keyboard controls don't look too good from the videos I've seen (They might not be too bad, I'll have to try them to be able to decide whether I like them or not though.) and the controller I have isn't very comfortable to use for more than 15 minutes at a time.

u/rspender · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Well, I downloaded the pre-order pilot training edition in anticipation of the 16/12 release. What a palaver. I couldn't even download the launcher until it was authorised (best part of a day). Then the launcher needed a code before installing, which didn't arrive by email for a few hours, then 4 different ones all hit at once.

When I could finally click the INSTALL button, it took all day long downloading (or synching) at mostly 0.01 MB/s and peaking at about 4 MB/s.

I hope that is sorted by the 16th! I can only imagine how badly the download servers get hit then.

Nothing like the ease of Steam for downloading.

Anyway, a bit of shopping research, and blowing out my cob-web covered wallet, I forked out for some kit on Amazon that I should get by 16th - 18th with free delivery well in time for Xmas :)

£79.99 - Radeon R7 260X 2GB

£39.99 - Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X

Some slightly cheaper flight sticks out there, but none in stock. I think I got the 260X for a bargain too ;)

u/Holint_Casazr · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

To quote myself from a similar question:

If you are low on funds: the T.Flight X is a perfect beginners HOTAS. Cheap and reliable.

The next step would be a T16000M FCS, also great value for your money.

Edit: Pedals are not really needed in ED; the twist on your stick for yaw is usually enough.

u/Mephiska · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

CH Products is the answer you were looking for.

  • Fighterstick for $100
  • Pro Throttle for $125

Done, full HOTAS setup, highest quality parts, great software, for $225. Or swap the Fighterstick for the Combatstick and give up two hat switches for standard buttons and save $20. All without the crappy madcatz saitek glitzy design & cheap plastic.
u/XCNuse · 10 pointsr/EliteDangerous

If you're looking for cheap, this is going to be your best option:

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-Pc/dp/B001CXYMFS

And to be honest, I don't think I've seen a single person say anything negative about it. I have a Saitek X52P and it certainly has its problems, and I've seen people make complaints but it's still very good and totally meant for Elite.

But the Thrustmaster one; for its low cost, everyone loves it.

u/Fruitsniffer · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I just bought Horizons and am planning on getting the best experience as possible now that I'm seriously considering getting into this game.

To do that, I'll probably need a hotas. Is the T.Flight Hotas Stick X still considered a good one for its price? I'd get an X52 but I'm pretty short on money right now, so this one will probably have to do. :x

EDIT: Also, I think I read that there's faction missions now. What's the point in factions and what's the difference between the different ones?

u/ArchAngelZero · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

No problem! If you're on a budget, definitely grab the explorer at $99. Know that the Vives will have better tracking and having the motion controllers opens up a whole world of gaming options (just not for Elite). But if we're just talking Elite, the difference between flat screen and the Explorer is waaaaay bigger than the difference between the explorer and the Vive pro, especially when you consider cost.

If you're looking for more immersion after the explorer, I'd get a good hotas if you don't have one already (I have the x52 pro), a buttkicker for your chair, and for the icing on the cake, mount your hotas to your chair directly - you can feel the vibrations from the buttkicker in your hands through the hotas. Makes flying through the mail slot sooooo awesome. I'm using some cheap TV mounts and velcro to attach my hotas to my chair
