Not the worst place to start but far from the best, too. I know some places in Germany which changed by a bigger difference within 2-3 elections. However this often needs quite a few non-voting persons changing their minds and to get your name out. Brand recognition is important if you want to change something on such population levels.

I know someone who lead an election campaign for a mayor in one of Germanies biggest cities, his initial polling was ~45%:55% in favor of his opponent. He still won, but this took 12 years of political activity to prepare. So be aware that all of that will take some time.

I always like Thinking about the Fundamentals - Helvey and will look into Rules for Revolutionaries - How Organizing can change everything - which is about Bernie's campaign structure. If you were happy with the way thinks were talked about in the military Helvey is a good read. He was Army Colonel or something like that.

I've been reading Strangers in Their Own Land. It does a good job of making you understand why specifically white republican southerners would want to vote for Trump. They have basically being used and lied to by politicians and corporations for decades, and they realize the American Dream they've been clinging to is basically no longer working (it was, in a way, decades ago). So you can feel some empathy for them.

But at the same time, it nicely goes over how they've repeatedly shot themselves in the foot, over and over again, and still are with Trump. Louisiana (where all the interviews in the book are) is near the bottom as the poorest, most polluted, less educated, less healthy state (it has other things going for it I'm sure, but that's besides the point). And at the same time, its population is largely voting for people who would bring in more chemical plants, defund public schools, defund health care, etc.

I think if you grow up surrounded by a certain mentality, and don't have access to as many resources and are constantly being manipulated or lied to, you know something is wrong, but you don't necessarily understand the best way to fix it. And things just suck so bad that you may want to jump on the first good-sounding thing you hear, like some guy who'll "create jobs" or "clean the swamp". You'll buy lottery tickets, or vote for a guy like Trump.

"At least he's different... he says he can make things like they were back in the day... hopefully he can." Because you just can't understand how you can't make horse-buggy builders jobs again, or see how things might get better in the future via renewals instead of oil. When your life is shit, you think short term, not long term. And you're angry because your town has been going downhill for decades, while the coasts have been on the uphill or at least steady for years now, even for minorities living there or immigrants that just got there.

So yeah, they're shooting themselves in the foot. But it's hard to straight out laugh at them. And we shouldn't, if anything because if they have a capacity to sway elections and have an influence on federal policy (and because we shouldn't be dicks to other people, in general).

I think Trump is a good inoculation against a lot of bad policies. I don't understand why any country (including Canada, where I live) would want to invest heavily in oil, rather than shift towards renewables as fast as possible, but maybe we need a great case study of why certain policies are just plain bad. It leaves room for the next guy who takes office to swiftly reverse a lot of those horrible policies, and swing the pendulum forcefully the other way. Hopefully. And I guess you guys will need the support of those white republicans if you're ever going to achieve that.

Sure man, I'm sure they have something prepared and ready, but in the meantime...

Michael Wildes is a truly brilliant immigration attorney who was contacted by Ross after the article was published in vocativ...over 2 years ago now.

They were dark days and without Michael or Ross ( Sami as well ) @savegulab would have failed, or would've still been ongoing with petitions and hashtags....very few people cared or listened.

Michaels firm Wildes and Weinberg was instrumental in securing visas for Gulab's and his family ( adorable kids) as well as others like Pele, Kwame James ( Wrestled the shoe bomber) , and most notably John Lennon Book

>is an obesity promoting social environment positive body acceptance or something?

Things like having a culture where people bring fattening but tempting junk food to work; environments that discourage walking; attractively packaged and hyper-palatable junk food in the stores, promote obesity.

The former Surgeon-general Dr. David Kessler wrote a book The End of Overeating which discusses how well food is engineered to be hyper-palatable. The food companies do well when people can't stop eating their products.

Also Marion Nestle, professor of public health, talks about this; how American agriculture produced a surplus of calories and the food companies had to figure out how to get people to eat it all. The pressures of the free market made them very clever at this.

The obesity epidemic is very damaging to people's health and very expensive.

>consider that for the first time child obesity rates were dropping thanks to Michelle Obama's school programs

That's good to hear.

Indeed it did, but not before he managed to become entwined in one of the more Byzantine webs of alleged treason ever. Burr, all in all, was one of the more intriguing characters in American history. For anyone interested in finding out more about him, I highly recommend Gore Vidal's excellent novel, Burr, A Novel -- https://www.amazon.com/Burr-Novel-Gore-Vidal/dp/0375708731. While it's an historical novel, it's well written and fast paced and one of those reads you'll find yourself unwilling to lay down before it's totally read.

Maybe try soylent 2.0 for food too! That changed my life keeping a case ready to go in the car or wherever. I can't bother to grocery shop for food or prepare or do dishes anymore. Easy to monitor calories and maintain or lose weight. https://www.soylent.com/product/drink/

And the best way to listen to audio books when not over a car stereo, bone conduction! Nothing in or over your ears.

I would definitely recommend audiobook for moon is a harsh mistress, the different voices the one narrator does are so good! It's free with an amazon prime membership, in USA at least, or you could torrent it or buy it in iTunes or get it with an audible.com membership. https://www.amazon.com/Moon-Harsh-Mistress/dp/B000JJRW80

Bonus: why monarchy is better than democracy. I'm not really embarrassed to have this on my bookshelf, but I'm not exactly proud either.

The biggest weakness of libertarian ideologies is the understanding of history and historical contexts. In a bubble, many of the ideas are consistent and logical, and in most cases admirable. In reality they are a bunch of conservative talking points with no increase in actual freedom for most people.

Thanks for the question. This is an important one. Gulab is a tragic case because of his falling out with Luttrell, but compared to others, he was really really really lucky. If he hadn't saved Luttrell, and saved someone random instead, he'd likely be dead. There are tons of other Afghans (and many Iraqis) who worked for the U.S. and saved American lives who are on a years long waiting list to come to this country. Read Kirk Johnson's "To Be a Friend is Fatal" https://www.amazon.com/Be-Friend-Fatal-Iraqis-America/dp/1476710481

or a this 2007 New Yorker article by George Packer: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2007/03/26/betrayed-2

Again, we're not talking about Syrian refugees or refugees from elsewhere. We're talking about people who worked for the U.S. military and risked their lives.

Likewise, I'd like to add that in all my reporting, I've found that the security checks refugees go through are no joke. This is a good thing, but without taking a stance on Trump or any of his policy positions, we should remember that we are not just arbitrarily letting random people into this country. It takes years and a whole lot of vetting from multiple agencies. Does that mean that someone from ISIS couldn't sneak in? Well, no. There is no 100 percent certainty. But we're doing an awful lot...and prob all we can. Read a great piece by my colleague Emily Cadei on this matter: http://www.newsweek.com/2016/09/02/donald-trump-syrian-refugees-baltimore-492590.html

I've been campaigning against Keurig for years, because they make shitty coffee, have an absurd amount of waste (both of coffee and packaging) are stupidly expensive ways of getting coffee, and are generally just consumerist trash.

Please, Dear Trump Supporters, you can't actually support Trump and own a Keurig, it's not allowed, and you can't sell it, because that would help the company by maintaining a market for them, you have to destroy them, and tell everyone you know that they are evil, maybe make up some fake news about how they cause women to get abortions, but only white women, brown and black women are made extra fertile by them. Please, my dear dear Trump Supporters, you must end this menace. You know what is a good fash-friendly coffee maker? Moka Pot. It'll make a far better cup of coffee, almost as quickly, and with far less waste, and you don't have to buy fucking DRMed coffee pods.

I really fucking hate Keurig. Between shitty Trump Supporters angry that their Alabaman compatriots picked a kiddy fiddler and Keurig, I'm really stuck on who to root for. It's a real WASP landing on a stinging nettle situation, someone's getting stung, and I don't give a shit who.

Actually, both, definitely both, and it's great.

> Why did the ‘six-nine’ narrations gain such prominence?

>One may ask why early Muslim scholars did not refute the ages mentioned in the “six-nine” narration in their commentaries. It is possible that they simply took for granted that particular figures in such reports were not necessarily regarded as chronological data, and did not feel the need to comment further as this was self-evident for people of that time. American professor, Denise Spellberg, theorises that political factors, in particular the Shi`a-Sunni split, may have been important in the prevalent notion of Aisha’s young age at marriage. Her young age, and therefore that she was not known to any man before the Prophet , was an important point for supporters of the Sunni Abbasid caliphate as it proved her status as a divinely-appointed wife, and thus a reliable source regarding the ‘thorny’ question of his succession[36]. It may have been that Sunni scholars favoured the reports which placed Aisha at nine years of age as it helped raise her status as the only virgin bride of the Prophet . One may also add that the Shi`a cult around the figure of Sayyiduna Ali no doubt used the fact that he had been brought up in the prophetic household from his early childhood as a mark of his distinction above the other Companions, particularly Aisha. The Shi`a rejected the authority and status of Aisha, and it may have suited Sunni scholars to highlight those reports that showed Aisha to be very young when she entered the Prophet’s household .

They've been planning this since at least this past summer, whether Clinton or Trump won. The point of the rally, as the article says, was to prove that Juggalos aren't a violent gang and that they should be treated as people too. Nathan Rabin of the AV Club wrote about this in his novella 7 Days in Ohio, which I highly recommend.
