I think it was u/purplepiratecrab that asked to know how the tumbling was going. Well, I think I’ve had good results with my first couple of test piece. One is an Axiom Tetra Bead-blasted Stainless Steel.

The spinner has good weight and balance, but I never cared for the bead-blasted finish. It was too rough and all the points and corners were far too “hot” for my taste. As it was my first foray into tumbling I threw all manner of media at it - Grits, SS Shot, Ceramic, Dish Soap, Baking Soda, and Polishes. There is plenty of advise online for tumbling stones, but surprisingly little instruction on metal (jewelry) tumbling. But I consumed what I could find.

I am using a Harbor Freight Chicago single-drum tumbler. I had gathered that the rubberized drum that comes with the tumbler was not ideal for metals like Stainless Steel (turns them black). So, following after a YouTube video, I assembled my own PVC drum. You do need to add baffles inside the drum. Otherwise, everything simply clumps at the bottom and nothing actually tumbles.

I ordered 1 lbs of Stainless Steel shot and 1 lbs of Small Ceramic Media from Amazon. Harbor Freight has Grit / Polish packs as well. Add water and a drop of Dawn dish soap and you’re ready to go.

https://www.amazon.com/Thumlers-Tumbler-Polisher-Accessories-Prepolish/dp/B000BUW610

While rock tumbling can takes weeks, metal tumbling over hours or days can get good results. If you simply want to knock off “hot” spots, 6 hours with some SS shot works great. I did that with a Brass Spinetic Micro-X which had super “hot” corners on it. Quite comfortable after that.

https://share.icloud.com/photos/0EthP9bf8BLlK-E1OPfdYFYoA

The last round with the Tetra involved 7 hours with Ceramic Media, 6 hours with Shot and Pre-Polish, overnight with Shot and Polish, and then 6 hours with Shot and Baking Soda. Even without the rubberized drum you are going to get a lot of black dust in the polishing stage so the soda really cleans that off of SS and cleans your Shot at the same time (otherwise you’re left with gray dull shot at the end).

The results are very satisfactory for a piece with a lot of edges like the Tetra. The photos above don’t really do it justice, but what I ended up with was something very close to UQH’s Fine Stone-Washed effect - smooth slightly soapy feel. Much better than the rough, hot finish it had before. I then sanded and polished the flats on both sides for a nice contrast. The Vortex Buttons from UQHs really makes this a unique piece - far more fondalable than it had been originally.

You do need a bit of patience and willingness to experiment with various combinations to appreciate the varying results. I want to try adding plastic media for cushioning. And If you want truly mirror polished pieces then further sanding and a polishing wheel would be necessary. Definitely more experimentation and learning is in my future. Hope this has been informative. Cheers!

There are some good and reasonably priced spinners on Amazon. I have and like this one https://smile.amazon.com/EZOON-Spinner-Aluminum-Replaceable-Spinning/dp/B06XZ13FC1. It's big and light with good gyro. Does great with a button upgrade, like a 22m Kong.

I love this large, heavy beast: https://smile.amazon.com/ATESSON-Spinner-Stainless-Precision-Material/dp/B071Z68LGL

This one is solid copper, and is decent. https://smile.amazon.com/TYZEST-Spinner-Durable-Precision-material/dp/B01NAPTIZQ

I don't have this one, but have seen a lot of people raving about it. https://smile.amazon.com/Aesthetics-Spinners-Stainless-hybrid-ceramic-delivers/dp/B073Q8TNYF

This one sounds really fast and has a great bearing. https://smile.amazon.com/Xelparuc-Spinner-Perfect-Anxiety-Children/dp/B06XSRQT7G

Wow! This one went down to $5. I have it in silver and it is one of my favorites. https://smile.amazon.com/Spinner-TANAAB-Durable-Spinning-Balanced/dp/B07263LRFV. It's pretty light, being solid aluminum, but very smooth and beautiful.

I hate to say it, but the best on amazon is generally poor quality. A lot of fidget spinners were recently purged off of Amazon and I'm not sure why. Medieval Spinners had their FS-8 listed and another random company called Sunny Tech had a bunch of like.. $6 spinners posted and I can't find them anymore.

If you wait more than 2 days...
FidgetHQ has quality stuff. I'd recommend the Zentri.
Alphabot industries is another solid one for a first buy, specifically the cheaper/smaller one the Valkyrie MKII.

Off amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/ATESSON-Spinner-Durable-Stainless-Precision/dp/B071CXLHTP/ because it's somewhat modular and you can make it a bar spinner per the pic and try that out.

I was looking for something off amazon that looks like the mini tank (link:https://spinetic-spinners.com/product/cigreen-mini-tank/ or another ver off FidgetHQ ) but couldnt find it, the one above is a solid choice out of the nightmare of amazon spinners.

edit-- found one quality one on amazon:

I just got this one in the mail today and it's a pretty nice little spinner. Even comes with a (cheaply made) case/sleeve thing. It's pretty tiny, which I actually like, and really smooth and pretty quiet.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XKZKSX3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I got that one because I previously ordered this one mostly just because I liked the case and wanted it to use on my zentri when it arrives lol. But it turned out to be a decent little spinner and I wanted to try the one with curved space between the wings.

Glad to hear that you like it! This particular spinner isn't common online, before it hit Amazon (sold by Spin War), I only saw it sporadically on Asia-based websites.

As for buttons, I strongly recommend a larger size like the 22mm Kongs. This is a heavy spinner, and the bigger buttons give a much better grip, and the deep dish on the Kongs really helps. If you can, I'd recommend that you buy a bunch of Kong 22mm SS from FidgetHQ while they still have them, since they sometimes go out of stock for long periods of time.

I haven't tried any other buttons yet because the Kongs seem to match the spinner perfectly. I do have some larger RevPunx, Spinetic, 2RDesigns, and other buttons that I may try on it, but I can't imagine that they'll be better than the Kongs.

BTW there is also a Starss "Shell" spinner sold by the same seller on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Starss-Spinner-Stainless-Bearing-Christmas/dp/B078GQ73RK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518377686&sr=8-1&keywords=starss

I bought one and it isn't bad at all, although I prefer the "Lines" spinner.

It’s tough at the beginning getting all things. I was like you, I went for hardware shops for brass nut and bearings but I ended up with nothing, my only choice was to order online. I live in Malaysia as of now and my online sources are the Chinese Taobao, or the Malaysian Shopee and Lazada.

For bearing, you can check the full list at:
https://www.bearingworks.com/bearing-sizes/#table-of-contents

Most common bearings from what I know used for ring spinners are 6803/61803 and 6703, some other choices are considerable like 6903. Based on the link above you can see the differences of each. Back to your question, I can only suggest getting them online like Amazon if you live in the US, like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Ceramic-Bearing-6803-2RS-17x26x5mm-61803/dp/B0758F464W/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=6803&qid=1574536512&sr=8-1

You can look around for cheaper ones, I got mine for about 3$ from Shopee.

For a brass nut, something like this would do:

https://www.amazon.com/FidgetKute-Select-Size-M10-M12/dp/B07RB1B9VX/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=brass+nut+m24&qid=1574536643&sr=8-6

These are just examples, you should choose carefully the type/size of the nut based on your liking and the size of the bearing you picked. I also suggest Aliexpress, they have good prices.

About the lead poisoning, I really have no idea, I think it should be fine as long as we don’t digest anything from it, I have to do more research to know about it.

u/Idlespin · 4 pointsr/FidgetSpinners

What I did was a little daft perhaps but fun experimentation. I took a cheap set of SS buttons and heated them several times after exposure to a series of chemicals found under the kitchen sink. If you are sensible and take precautions something wonderful might turn up. There are no mistakes.....just "happy acidents" 😉

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bob-Ross-Bobblehead-Miniature-Editions/dp/0762490411/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511332326&sr=8-1&keywords=bob+ross

If it isn't to your liking at the end either polish back or try something different. I wish I still had access to the Chemistry department at school.

Idle.

Here is the link for the sphere one
https://m.fasttech.com/p/8027000
Its pretty fun to mess with, it spins on all surfaces. The black pads are connected but the red and blue ones spin independently. only problem ive had is that I can't get the bearing out, which isn't a big deal for me, atleast for that one.

Here is the link for the case. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074CG74SQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_MjKNzb8F1WY9E
Pretty solid case, fits most spinners pretty nicely!

Let me know if you have any other questions

u/Stone-Bear · 1 pointr/FidgetSpinners

I got this ceramic bearing to see how much better they were compared to the bearings I already had and the difference is enormous.

I'm a total noobie so this was really fun to throw together, a quick hour 3D print and I put it in one of my smaller spin bases and it spins really nice. I didn't clean the bearing or anything, just stuck it right in. I ordered another one, I'll put more thought into it and pick a different color maybe (might have to do another glow in the dark!)

Its not as quiet as the metal bearings, but the extra spin time is worth it. I definitely recommend if you're looking for some longer spin times.

u/WhatsUpBras · 1 pointr/FidgetSpinners

Idle i saw those Hercs actually was my first choice but seemed dumb to spend $20+ on my $25 woosah aluminum namaste.

Ended up with these buttons and they are an absolute DREAM. really really nice for $6 shipped - if you get a chance grab them i think you will be impressed esp if you are replacing a Woosah Aluminum 608 spinner they will change it dramatically

Best I could come up with

I picked this guy up last week at that price point and it's honestly fantastic. The grooves are starting to patina a little bit but keeping it in your pocket a little bit when you aren't using it is enough to keep it at a near-mirror finish. With fresh bearings you can get 8+ minute spins easily but that quickly averages out to 6 minutes after a few days of use and some schmoo has worked its way into them.

u/Highlander_316 · 1 pointr/FidgetSpinners

I have the spinner that looks like this. It spins for about 7 minutes. Not expensive and works great.

u/GoldenChaos · 1 pointr/FidgetSpinners

My pockets are too full to hold fidget spinners, haha.

Storage thing is a cheap jewelry tray from Amazon - it's the only one with the right size squares to fit some of the larger spinners. Color is awful but I've just dealt with it, I might put some black microfiber cloths along the bottom of each cell to make it look better or something. This is the Kirsite Spinner black edition if anyone wanted to know. I have one just like it, except it's blue. Also here's a good link to some buttons, and I think they'll match your spinner good

TL;DR here

I tried a one-drop 10 ball and an NSK ds plat in there as well; neither come close to the 6 seconds shy of 8 mins I can hit. That was with a pretty average "strong" spin on the table.

u/timeisart · 2 pointsr/FidgetSpinners

Just got this case in the mail today (thanks to /u/dillthepill & /u/ohitsjustpete for recommending it). The elastic straps keep the spinners secure.

and for a EDC pouch I'm trying out this leather coin pouch.
