Holy shit!! YOURE amazing!!! Thank you!
As for materials its mostly playing the game and writing down all the dialogue and location descriptions, and then flavoring it my own style, but i found a website that someone did all the dialogue.
http://www.ffwa.eu/ff9/script.php heres the script (I dont use this but it might be handy) Note that this is only the main story dialogue not all the towns people you can talk to. Thats why i just play the game and write down dialogue and make sure i get everything for my self
As for maps, i just type in the location and put ff9 map after it into google and final fantasy wikia has good ones Example: Lindblum ff9 map
If you dont mind your players knowing they are in FF9 you can use these backgrounds to help with the theater of mind https://imgur.com/r/gaming/A09TB
As for puzzles and side quests, i dont really have them compiled into a folder or anything but i can tell you what extra puzzles and things ive had in each area. For instance, i re-did the evil forest map and made it the paper mario forever forest map, and they had to do it all theater of the mind so it seemed way more confusing. https://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/198849-paper-mario/faqs/13080?raw=1
So i would say like "You see a massive growth of roots leading up to the top of the forest canopy, and two paths, you can go left, or you can go right" and then depending on which way they go "The path keeps following around the spire but theres path to your right leading away from it" and so on and so forth.
I put a extra puzzle in there too, to give the evil forest a little more story and depth. There was a whole deal with Treants being corrupted by the Mist and they had to cure them with the spring water where that moogle hangs out. If they disturbed them while they were corrupted they wouldve had to fight them which would of easily been a deadly encounter. Once they cured them they can use the limbs of the Treants to get to a different part of the forest.
I have puzzles for EVERY dungeon in the game, so if you want brain storming ideas just hit me up! OR extra mini games and fun stuff for the Cities!! Like Lindblum and the festival of the hunt! That shit was epic and my players STILL talk about it!! Little things in the game transfer so well over to a table top RPG... Like Gysahl Pickles!! Such a hilarious role playing opportunity!
And dont forget everyones favorite part of the game THE MOOGLES!! https://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/faqs/23306
Here are a few Youtube playlist that i use the most for making my game
This guy does a playthrough and he is extremely thorough and talks to every NPC and gets most of the treasure and is real slow on the dialogue so its a good reference if you dont have the game on you or something. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF02D69667E5D6E9A
He did another one when HD came out but he talks while playing it but has interesting theories and info about the game https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvv1mA3UKy9OD8NGzPEYsmbXYo0_NZ1i7
Here is an AMAZING fan dub that i reference for voice acting the characters!!! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLED408A81C906035D
And of course the soundtrack!! All extended versions too, for 30 minute loops you can rip off of youtube and use for your games https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6akIKaXBeU2YH7iaRR6MDQ0sWGShUe7x
You can totally just play it right off of youtube but i use a program called Ableton so i can map out an entire keyboard for each song or ambiance effect
For the eidolon battles i watch this girls guides on the FFXIV "Trials" https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz9iQVOtDq1mqFtMgScBtHTGRsEgmVIvF
I also use this website for more info that i can read up on, but she does an excellent job at explaining things http://www.ffxivinfo.com/trials/a-realm-reborn.php
Also for almost everything like extra info on each location, the wikia is an amazing resource. And now THIS! https://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-Ultimania-Archive-2/dp/1506706622/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1534262317&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=final+fantasy+ultimania&psc=1
Thats all i can think of for now!! I have a million stories on each area and how they reacted to places and people and but i cant think of anything else that would actually help.
But if you wanna know more on how the evil forest was done differently? Ice Cavern? Gizamalukes Grotto? Cleyra???? I can give you all of that info buts its not really written down anywhere. Especially cuz you can plan every badass thing you can possibly think of, spend hours and hours on one scenario and your players will throw a wrench, and do something COMPLETELY different and you gotta go with it!
But one thing i cant recommend ENOUGH is to check out this guy. He made me the DM i am today!

Some things that changed my game play 10 folds is in this playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlSmiQ728Xr1lKFQU1w6Yot5_o3zgvY73
His key mechanics are legendary!
Lemme know for any more questions!
Thank you! If you like you can follow me on Instagram, I'm uploading my sketches there too - https://www.instagram.com/aya_kun/
I'm using this sketchbook for daily sketches - https://www.amazon.com/One-Sketch-Day-Visual-Journal/dp/0811875342
At first it was easier, I had some ideas or drew something that happened that day, or fanart or when I'm lazy I just did studies from photos for practice. It was more time consuming also, but now it takes less time as I gained momentum I guess ) I would definitely recommend it - It makes you think and practice everyday, just have fun and don't stress over it, it's just for you, not for an art gallery =) Also keep in mind - you have all day to think about what you want to draw and spent just 30 minutes on a drawing itself, so it's not so time-consuming. I really hope that makes sense, hehe.
About Deviantart, I'm mostly using it for my "finished" drawings, you can check them out here - http://google-moogle.deviantart.com/
But for sketches I'm using Tumblr and Instagram, I hope that helps! )
I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and although my girlfriend is familiar with the series, she is not as passionate about the games as I am. However, for Christmas last year she got me a Final Fantasy Artbook called The Sky. It features breathtaking art that is instantly recognizable to any Final Fantasy fan. You also will not need to know which games are his favorite because the book features artwork from most of the main games in the series. So no matter what he will be happy. I was ecstatic Christmas day last year when my girlfriend got this for me and I'm sure your boyfriend would be as well. If it is too late for you to order online I have seen it in stock at my local Barnes and Noble.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
If you wanted to opt for something extra to go with the lightning deck, I'd suggest the Ultimania Archive books (English translated Volume 2 releases in December). They have tons of behind the scenes info about the games in each volume (Vol. 1 covers games I-VI, Vol. 2 will cover VII-IX, and when Vol. 3 releases next year... X-XIV) a lot of the artwork done by Yoshitaka Amano, concept sketches, maps of the world. For under $20, it's a really great coffee table book to flip through and take a look at all the work that goes into each game.
Or maybe a Lightning plush to go with the deck. lol
If your friend is a little more into Final Fantasy than just XIII though, definitely either one of the Ultimania Archive books or one of Amano's artbooks like "The Sky" or "Illustrations". Best of luck to you!
My apologies.
Let me be a little more helpful: Did your giftee list any specific games from the Final Fantasy series? If so, here are some easter eggs he or she may like:
I do have a copy of Final Fantasy XIV: The Complete Collection that I haven't touched yet. As soon as I heard of the free trial, playing it just wasn't a priority. That and I had to take care of other things.
I know it seems like a waste, but I'm definitely going to consider finding time to play Final Fantasy XIV. Y'shtola's waiting. I just hope I can get to it before the next expansion lol
I was given the first Ultimania Archive as a gift recently and I really love it. It's a book full of concept art, development history, and just general information about the first six games of the series. Great gift for any fan and it's fairly cheap too.
> How would one deal with other expansions? Wouldn't I just have to continue to get the Complete editions (or I'd probably would just have to buy the expansions separately).
You would buy Stormblood separately, which has both expansions'.
I think The Complete Edition is the best bang for your buck though, so I recommend it.Make sure not to buy used. Once the activation key is used, it's attached to that person's account forever.
EDIT: Actually, you can get them separately for the same price as, or cheaper than, the Complete Edition. Here are the options.
Option 1: The Complete Edition The Complete Edition is more convenient because you have everything in one package. However, buying them separately means you can spread out your purchases because the expansion's content isn't accessible until after A Realm Reborn's content anyway, or you can wait until the expansion goes on sale.
Option 2: A Realm Reborn Digital Code + Stormblood Physical Copy This is the cheapest option and, after thinking about it, the one I recommend. While playing A Realm Reborn you wait for the expansion to ship, and it costs less than the complete edition.
Option 3: A Realm Reborn Digital Code + Stormblood Digital Copy This one is all digital, and the same price of the complete edition. You don't have to deal with physical copies of anything, and you can install it all as soon as you buy it instead of waiting for shipping.
Sorry for the blunder there. :-/ Hope I'm being helpful. :P
Lmao! Fair enough. As an anime fan I do prefer Nomura's style. But I DEFINITELY appreciate Amano's work & even own The Sky Box set of art books.
I'm thinking of doing this! Which Surface Pro do you have? I'm thinking of getting this one here. I was wondering how well VIII's mods would work on it.
I'm really excited to see someone tried out the same idea I was thinking of!
I really find having split controllers comfortable, and having the boosters and mods would be great. Plus, I figure it would let me play a good number of the FFs that aren't on the Switch while still having just that screen & controller only feel. (Just not the later, more graphics-intensive FFs.)
Can confirm. I just bought this item last week for $31 plus shipping. Just did a chat with an Amazon rep and was refunded $18 as well. Thanks for the heads up!
To add to this, it is an AWESOME collection and I thought it was a steal for $31, even better at this price.
Does anyone own: http://www.amazon.com/Dawn-Worlds-Fantasy-Yoshitaka-Amano/dp/1593078684/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1396380677&sr=1-1&keywords=dawn+the+worlds+of+final+fantasy
I read that it contains a lot of the same artwork and not worth getting if you purchased "The Sky". Was curious how accurate that was.
I bought a copy off amazon when it released last year. It is really great. Great production value and product.
Pretty sure Amazon has a hardback set of VII, VIII and IX they re released awhile back. You definitely dont want the OG FFIX guide, its possibly the worst strategy guide ever lol.
EDIT: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1101898046/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1499619808&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=final+fantasy+strategy+guide
Damn that collection is expensive now. Looks like you can buy the original VII guide on there. As for IX your best and cheapest option is to use the internet, because thats pretty much what the OG guide did too. Except its on a dead server you can no longer access, someone did back it up though into a zip drive so if you want to buy the OG IX guide and find that you would be okay.
If you like the Lulu's mog.. Its great quality too. And congratulations!
Amazon
I've been really wanting to do this too. You can get V and VI for PS1 in a combo pack on Amazon for like 10 dollars. Both are amazing. And if you love FFVII and like 3rd person shooters I would say give Dirge of Cerberus a chance, I really enjoyed it; but I could see why a lot of people didn't care for it.

I bought this one
It's super pretty and comes with prints. They're guides by Prima :)
The Sky art books on Amazon. They are a collection of concept art by Yoshitaka Imano from the first 10 games. I own this collection and it is really quite spectacular. Hyrule Historia is also a good gift, as it covers all Zelda games from inception through Skyward Sword. Not as much of an art book as it is a general retelling of the franchise and an order of events for the games.
If you husband is somewhat of an audiophile, I would suggest Distant Worlds 1 & 2
This should cover you for whatever birthdays/christmas/anniversaries for like a year.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Sky-Fantasy-Slipcased-Edition/dp/1616551607
I bought that for my best friend for his birthday and he about shit himself. It is a beautiful collection. I own one myself as well.
It was included with the special edition of Advent Children (not Advent Children Complete.) I think this is that special edition, but I'm not 100% sure. The description on Amazon seems to match the description here, but there's no mention of Last Order on Amazon. Still, I'm pretty sure that's it.
This probably isn't what you are looking for, but is the closest to what I know might be.
I picked this up a few years ago, The Sky. It is three art books on Amano's art for the Final Fantasy series. Even if you don't have it there is a chance you've seen decent chunk of this. Skimming through it I'm not seeing anything describing his process or interviews. It is largely just concept art for the games.
However, what it does have is a chronological order of his Final Fantasy art from 1987. So you might be able to use it as a collected grouping of his art to see his evolution over the decades. At least as far as Final Fantasy is conerned. n
The NES era, volume 1, looks to be mostly just the occaisonal scene, but mostly the final drawn art pre-Pixel conversion.
Volume 2 is the SNES era. As it progesses it begins including more varied stuff. Some serious drawings, some silly little asides.
Volume 3, the 3D era up to FF10 is different. Less art per game, but looks to be earlier in the process stuff than the previous two volumes. More "drafty" for lack of a better word. Stuff like this where Aerith looks more like Celes. A noticeable amount of pages where the same drawing is shown in different Colors. Three variations of this are in this volume scattered about.
As a layman, it seems the three volumes are:
http://www.amazon.com/Amano-The-Complete-Prints-Yoshitaka/dp/0060567635/ref=pd_sim_b_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1B2R4WMY1N8ERPNP29CQ
This is a good one that showcases a lot ofwork from his other projects as well as final fantasy. I can never get enough of Amano's work. He's easily my favorite artist of all-time.
One of the best investments I've ever made. Its an Epson 1176W. You can kind of see in the pic I have the XBONE, Wii, SNES mini, N64, and XB360 hooked up to it. Was it designed for gaming? No clue. Do people salivate over it when they come over? Absolutely. Do I laugh while I destroy my friends on a 10 1/2 foot screen in our Mario Kart tournaments? Again yes.
If you are thinking about getting one, do it. I watch movies and play games with zero issues. I'll never go back to having a normal TV again. Projectors are the best bang for your money. I have a second one in my bedroom.
This one is a few years old and i think there are newer models out but here is a link to the specs: https://www.amazon.com/Epson-PowerLite-Widescreen-Resolution-V11H476020/dp/B0081U0AW4
Definitely FFVII then! If you want something fancier, there are replica Buster swords and Play Arts figures--Cloud and Sephiroth are the anchor characters and probably the safest bets. This art book is gorgeous if you think he might be into that, but it's not FFVII exclusive. This print set is cute, too. Or there's the Static Art Minis of Cloud, Sephiroth, and Tifa.
There's probably a bunch of soundtracks & such out there too, but I'm not too familiar with those.
Oh no, that sounds like The Sky, which you should be able to find for much cheaper, though coming from someone who collects artbooks of all kinds (and loves Final fantasy), it's priceless. But on Canadian Amazon it's about $20 to $30 cheaper and worth every penny.
It's actually Yoshitaka Amano: The Complete Prints. It's quite a big collection, includes some fold out pieces as well. Love his artstyle!
Not sure if they have stuff about development on the Ultimania Archive Vol. 1. I know they have a lil bit of VII on the Vol. 2 but dunno about the previous ones.
It's a great book tho, try to check it
Theres Art of Eorzea, as well as the Heavensward Artbook.
There's The Dawn, and the Art of Final Fantasy XV will be released around December 2017.
I really enjoy the Art of Eorzea since the artstyle is right up my alley and just love Akihiko Yoshida, Masao, and Namae's artstyles
too bad they left the team :(.If you dont mind, there's also The Tactics Ogre Artbook that's primarily by Tsubasa Masao, under the tutelage of Akihiko Yoshida, who both worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII (iirc), and Final Fantasy XIV.
Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1506706444/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_359iDbCRME55B
I own all three of these and they are super cool.
I highly recommend people check this out.
The IX section really impressed me. I expected a lot smaller section than what it ended up having.
I'd grab it for PSN, it's a better port than the iOS version.
If you're planning to play it on PS3, I'd actually recommend just getting a physical copy of Anthology for PS1, which includes both V and VI.
You can still get a new copy for $10, the same price as either of them alone on PSN. http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-Anthology-VI-Playstation/dp/B00002R28C/
Here's the Piggyback FF8 strategy guide.
Also, the Brady Games guide can be found here.
EDIT: Assuming you're in the UK, of course. I'm sure that Amazon.com will have them, though.
EDIT x2: Yep, and they're cheaper than .co.uk!

I bought a set of three Amano art books for my girlfriend two Christmases ago and she loves them. Book 1 has I-III. Book 2 has IV-VI. Book 3 has VII-X. Each is about US $25 on Amazon. Here's the link to book 1.
The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Book 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/161655018X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qjBPAb1CHE8YX
The closest are these tiny Play Arts Kai minis, that come in a blind box. I bought this a while back and got all five of them, plus an extra Squall.
They’re tiny but very cute.
https://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-Fantasy-Trading-Random/dp/B014F9KBZ0/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_21_t_0/133-8658161-0996501?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6Y1G0FKJ03WT5X98N7NH
to clarify, this is the version that comes with it. the amazon listing only refers to it as "Bonus Book". http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Children-Collectors/dp/B000K4WLXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449776490&sr=8-1&keywords=final+fantasy+vii+advent+children+special+edition+box+set
Funny you should mention that because I *have* the full Ultimania and none of Barret's pages make mention of a medallion (including the page cited in the Wikipedia article you're linking to). The relevant parts of these books have been translated by fans for well over a decade now (particularly **anything** concerning characters, their designs, and concepts), and yet there's never been a mention about this so-called medallion from any veritable source.

Not even the official English translated version of the Ultimania (which came out last year) has mention of it
I have this one:
Amano: The Complete Prints
It has quite a few of his final fantasy art along with other commissions. It's a beautiful book.
You can check it out at the following locations in addition to Spotify:
Bandcamp
iTunes
Google Play
Amazon / Amazon UK
Lots of fairly obscure stuff on here, definitely worth checking out!
Yeah! They’re called Final Fantasy Trading Art Minis. There are two sets of these kinds and the first set contains Squall! I found them at a local game store around where I live, and they come in blind boxes, but you can order them offline as well! I thing Square’s website is out of stock, but Amazon has them! Check them out here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014F9KBZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BMF5CbG2B13ZJ
Amazon It's back up to $80CAD now, but CamelCamelCamel shows it at $60 for a couple years. Just gotta hope for a sale now.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00002R28C/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
Here ya go! That's a ps1 anthology playable on your ps2 that has 6 in it. It's less than $17 and you get 5 as a bonus :D
He's talking about the Limited Edition Collector's Set. It was only released on DVD (not blu-ray) and is the original version of the film, not the Complete version. It includes a book called Final Fantasy VII: The Novel, which is actually a collection of three short stories (released in Japan as On the Way to a Smile). One of those stories was "Case of Denzel," which was later animated and included in the Complete edition. (The other two stories are "Case of Barrett," "Case of Tifa." "Case of Yuffie," "Case of Nanaki," "Case of Shinra," and "Case of the Lifestream" never got official English releases as far as I know.) It also contains the only official English version of Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, which was not included in the Complete edition (although you can easily find it on YouTube).
I pulled inspiration for this piece from Amano's work in this book set. It has a lot of his work from FFI-FFX!
That looks really nice. I want this and the Sky (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1616551607/) on my coffee table someday
Yeah. And they're pretty inexpensive, too.
Which book is it? I've been thinking of picking up The Sky to have something to thumb through, every now and again.
Edit: I may have answered my own question, because I can't find another one... haha.
Avoid anything coming from China, besides probably being a bootleg, who knows if it would be child safe.
Here's what should be the reproduction of the moogle in Advent Children:
http://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-Fantasy-Moogle-Stuffed/dp/B002QXOJ74/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334940821&sr=8-2
There is a smaller "key chain" plush as well.
you won't find just the first disc unless you want to pay an insane amount on ebay.
just buy the greatest hits version for $15 on amazon
Also, look at The Sky. It's absolutely massive and covers nearly all of Amano's art for the series, and it's retailing for $50.
It's true that some artbooks get expensive, but typically those are imports, very niche, or are out-of-print.
Advent Children: Limited Edition Collector's Set
There's an Amazon link to the product, if you're into Amazon and all.

Here you go, just note that the guides are the BradyGames guide so you're mostly buying them for the appearance and the supplementary art.
There's also a set for X, X-2 and XII.
These books are in Japanese and are known as Ultimania's. The first english one will be released in June and are up for preorder.

Apparently they just released an Ultimania this last June that covers the first 5 or so games. Pt. 2 comes out in december, and PT 3 (The one that covers 13) comes out in April.

If theres one for FF6 that doesn't include artwork from The Sky, then I'd get one.

This isn't Final Fantasy but it's still Nomura and I don't know about this but it could be something
Yoshitaka Amano also has an artbook
I have it and it's wonderful
it's $15 on amazon for all 4 discs. $10 if you buy it used.
They actually still print new copies of it
Yes but as I said in my post, the Final Fantasy Anthology collection for PS1 contains FF6. I made no mention of 3.
