I’ve read making cake and frosting cooler makes it more solid and firm and therefore easier to work with. I have no idea if this will actually work, but since no one else has answered yet...

Try putting your buttercream and cakes, separately, in the fridge for about a hour before applying the frosting to the cake.

I’ve also seen some bakers use an L-shaped cake scrapper, like this . (Just please ignore that “fondant” is literally in the product title lol. The photos show it being used on cream frosting.)
