Features:
I love the camera. It consistently stuns me. t2i was my first camera, then GH4, and now GH5. I rent/use C100/C300 FS7 and RED Epic when needed.
The absolutely biggest thing about the GH5 that has completely changed me as a shooter is IBIS. I can now use the glass I want to use with the freedom of being handheld.
4k 10-bit is the next big feature that really excited me with the GH5. It gives me 'just' enough room in post to fix a lot of shots when compared with 8-bit. V-LOG is a necessity IMHO.
Slow motion is OK up to 120fps. There are limitations and the codec gets spread really thin, but I'm getting some very impressive results.
Dual SD is nice. Full HDMI is nice. The EVF is quite good. Internal sound is quite impressive, especially with this XLR accessory.
Anamorphic mode is really, really cool. I am meeting a local studio to do some camera tests and talk about low budget anamorphic shoots later this month. It's getting me on people's radar that I really want to get on.
The drawbacks are the small sensor. This is the weak link to the camera. It's still very capable of producing incredibly cinematic images, but it might just be a tad bit harder to do compared to a Super 35 camera.
TBH, as much as I love the GH5, it's not really an 'A-Cam.' Ergonomics and dual IBIS when paired to a lens like this one makes it an ideal B-Cam. I made the decision to purchase an EVA-1 last month. As a solo shooter, I plan on keeping the EVA-1 on sticks as my A-CAM, with the GH5 on a sling to grab opportunity hand-held shots as my B-CAM. One could rig the GH5 up and lock-it-down and get great results (as I have been doing), but it really excels as a handheld 'floater' due to it's features/ergonomics.
First off, I wouldn't get the mark 1 lens with GH5. Spend the little extra money if you're going for a Panasonic lens and get the mark ii to use in body image stabilization. Basically it would come down to a choice between a cheaper lens and a gimbal or a lens with dual IS. However, the camera + the IS 2 lens would be your budget, and there's certainly lots of other stuff to buy when getting started.
This is a set up I have used with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and it works great, fully expect it to look even better with the GH5:
https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-LUMIX-LEICA-SUMMILUX-H-X015/dp/B00J8H7H48/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1493994405&sr=8-5&keywords=panasonic+14mm
https://www.amazon.com/Zhiyun-Crane-Brushless-Handheld-Stabilizer/dp/B01I2MWUOG/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1493994394&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=zhiyun+crane&psc=1
That is a lightweight 14mm 1.7 lens (works great in low light) and the most affordable gimbal on the market. I also have access to a Ronin-m at work, and I have to just say, the shots you can get on both are different, but the Zhiyun is soooo much easier to set up and get great shots with. Plus it fits into a small backpack and is far less to lug around. I would also recommend either one of these monopods to use with this system:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=554095&gclid=CLPR1In82NMCFdgKgQod580D0w&is=REG&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&A=details&Q=
^ This is a great set up with the Crane. What I do is velcro the included remote to the lower point of the monopod and use it to control the crane manually. I can then extend the pole (even smoothly while filming) and essentially have my own hand held jib anywhere I go.
https://www.amazon.com/Sirui-SUP204SR-Photo-Video-Monopod/dp/B00I5NKCNE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1493994900&sr=1-1&keywords=sirui+monopod
^This version is a bit heavier, but also a touch more stable. You can not smoothly lengthen the pole while filming, but this monopod has the added version of feat attached to the bottom. You can set it up at its shortest and it will stand on its own as long as it's not windy. Great for setting up shots in the wild that you would also like to be in. I put a quick release plate between each point of contact (Quick release on the monopod -> crane, and quick release on crane -> camera), and you can just as easily set it down on the feat and detach from camera with no issues.
Now, something to consider is that you could get two GH4's (on ebay, around $700 each) for the price of one GH5. I guess that would depend on if you have others filming with you and whatnot. I think it really depends upon what you're wanting to film. Like for example, what exactly would you do with the drone and how would it help your footage? If you think that you need landscape shots and what not, then it's probably best to jump down a level in camera for a decent drone.
Some other things to consider that you might need:
-External Mic
-Tripod
-Extra batteries
-Fast enough SD card to record 4k (Sandisk Extreme)
Another camera to consider may be the Sony a6500 for around $600 cheaper.
Just using your example of going from a sunny playground to a shaded area, that light isn’t nearly bright enough to help you. I doubt you’ll find any on camera light powerful enough to help you outside during the day, even in shade.
If you’re trying to solve that particular problem, then I suggest treating yourself to a variable ND filter. Don’t be too cheap, either. You were ready to spend $150 on that light, so don’t be afraid to drop some money on this filter. The cheap ones aren’t great. Stick with a reputable brand like B+W, Tiffen, Hoya, etc. This is an example of a pretty good one. Remember that you get what you pay for. You’ll want to look at your lens filter thread measurement to make sure you get the correct size.
If you don’t know what an ND filter is (Neutral Density), it is basically sunglasses for your camera. It allows you to darken the image without having to change the settings on your camera. This is particularly useful for video when following the rule of thumb of your shutter speed being double your frame rate, as these are normally pretty slow shutter speeds from an exposure standpoint. With a variable ND, you’ll be able to quickly spin the filter to brighten your image rather than fumbling with camera settings. It would actually look much smoother than a light anyway.
/u/NiceBort - I love my 14-140 outdoors, but it is too slow for indoor sports. You'll need something faster for an indoor soccer tournament.
If budget permits, I recommend the [Sigma 18-35 f/1.8] (https://www.amazon.com/Sigma-18-35mm-F1-8-Lens-Canon/dp/B00DBL0NLQ//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) and a [Viltrox] (https://www.amazon.com/Viltrox-EF-M2-Adapter-Thirds-Camera/dp/B079M4W8MQ//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) or [Kipon] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=282190857756&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) focal reducer/adapter
Here are some indoor/night sports shot with this lens and the GH5:
If you need a longer focal length (because you'll be farther away from the action) get the [50-100 f/1.8] (https://www.amazon.com/Sigma-50-100mm-Manufacturer-Accessories-Accessory/dp/B01JALDVW8//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20).
Hope this is helpful and good luck finding the right glass for your tournament!
For video purposes, the differences between v1 and v2 of the 12-35mm are minimal. Dual IS2 supported by v2 only adds about 1/2 stop of stabilization compared to the GH5's standard Dual IS supported by v1. This can be useful for shooting stills, but less so for video.
I'm currently testing the 12-60mm and while I like the improved build quality over the plastic-y 12-35mm, I'm not in love with the fact that you only get f/2.8 at 12mm– zoom in even 1mm and the aperture begins its count up toward f/4 (at 60mm).
I mostly shoot with primes, but if I had to choose one, [I'd get Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8](http://amzn.to/1mEFSgw "Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8") ;) Better build quality than any of these other lenses, way better manual focusing (repeatable, linear, etc.), and the GH5's IBIS is more than good enough at these focal lengths. There are frequent sales on Olympus' lenses that bring the price down to about $799, and you can find a used one for ~$600 fairly easily.
If I could afford it i'd replace my 12-35 and my 25mmf1.4 with the 10-25!
If I was buying the 10-25 like you I'd get the 35-100 f2.8 which is on offer right now on amazon, referral links included.
I'm also a big fan of my 42.5mm f1.7 for portraits and bokeh time. You could get the 42.5mm f1.2 , but it's manual focus only more expensive. Amazing quality piece of glass though. I love the 42.5mm focal length, I suggest you check it out :)
I ordered this: GH5 Camera package on amazon
The bag while I'm not using it is decent. The memory card is a good brand, good size and has worked just fine, no issues with speed. The sd card reader was surprisingly fast to download and quite small (a plus). The best part is the two extra batteries and charger. I love plugging it straight in the wall too rather than cords to connect. For the price of just a GH5 elsewhere I found it a bargain.
I use a Smallrig cage. I like the way it goes the body and it seems very well made for the price. I use the xlr adapter on my GH5 so I picked up the cage designed to fit that.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075R7238M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_GRwaCbZCK4GB6
To be clear you are talking about this?
Thanks for the advice. I currently shoot with my G7 and have the kit lens that comes with it, the 25mm F1.7, and the 45-150mm F4.0. I think it's a nice combo that covers all my bases. Upgrading to a GH5 or 5s would financially make the most sense for me. But if I make shit tons of YouTube money and upgrade to Full Frame, I'll let you know :)
Can somebody point out the differences between this lens and this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055N2L22/ref=psdc_173565_t3_B014RD6RC0
And why that one is so much more expensive?
