Also agreed. Looks like they cheaped out on the hub at the last minute. Slightly irritating as there are plenty of more suitable hubs on alibaba for ~$10, but equally I'm not that concerned for such a small amount of money.

I have one of these left over from a work project (different brand but looks identical), and it works fine including pass-through charging, so might be a good place to start if anyone is looking for another hub: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MSL94T6/ref=sr_1_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1497689374&sr=1-9

I'm typing this from my Pocket and overall I'm very happy despite the novelty hub, and I'm sure I'll be absolutely thrilled once I've got used to the bizarre keyboard layout. Right now I'm typing with just the index fingers from each hand and not very many words per minute, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

I used the same thermal paste.
The biggest change is the thermal pads that turn the back panel into a passive cooler.
I used Fujipoly smart Extreme X-e Thermal Pad 11.0 W/mK https://www.amazon.com/Fujipoly-mod-smart-Extreme-Thermal/dp/B00ZSJQX0E I put 2 layers of 1mm thermal pads on CPU and the heat pipe from above the CPU to halfway to the fan. Plus 1mm of pads on the cooling fins on the fan discharge.

I followed the instructions on this post to adjust the bios:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comments/6s7zck/my_unlocked_bios_working_settings_dptf_limit/

Although I set my temp limits at 80C instead of 85C. Not that it matters with the cooling I have I can't get the CPU above 70C.

Running the Prime 95 stress tests for 30 minutes. My CPU went straight to 100% at full 2559-2620Hz speed and my CPU temp climbed to 70 C. In normal operation 59 C is the peak temperature after hours of heavy use. This is right after the repaste before the paste had a chance to cook.

I hope this helps. You don't need the exact brand of paste or pads I used, I just included them in case anyone was curious.

I should give credit; the thermal pad post I saw was by ZiggyDeath and the BIOS settings were by neoak.

I am please with the way my system has worked out. I hope you are pleased with yours.

Have a good one.

Jon

+1 Also did the cooling mod and my pocket also idles at 44-48C.

As with some earlier posts, I've had pretty good luck with using thermal pads to help the heat pipes make contact with the case (Used this one https://www.amazon.com/Fujipoly-mod-smart-Extreme-Thermal/dp/B00ZSJPZQ2). Also used thermal pads and a copper shim to let the chip (power delivery?) above the CPU touch the case back as well. For this I just cut the thermal pads to make sure the chip can contact the copper shim and then put more pads to touch the shim with the back of the case.

One interesting thing is now my load temps are also controlled at < 73C which combined with the BIOS settings bumping up throttling temps makes sure that the CPU always runs at 2.55GHz if it needs to, even in extreme cases like charging a flat battery (the pocket can actually negotiate 10V charging @ 2 or 3A I think) while under intense use.

The unfortunate side effect, though, is if you actually do this for a while, the outer body and underside of the pocket gets very hot (feels at least 50C) so you wouldn't want to be holding it in your hands (only happens when charging so I think this won't be an issue). But no thermal throttling occurs anymore which is awesome.

Yes, MUCH better.

I have both.

The Pocket is basically a little video game console that runs Windows.

It's great for playing games on emulators, but that's about it.

The Pocket is literally like someone took an ultrabook and shrunk it.

The keyboard, screen, pointer nub and touch screen are all excellent.

It has as much RAM and storage as most entry level ultrabooks and it has the same as or more ports than they do!

I use it as my daily driver and I carry it in my day bag.

It does need a little TLC out of the box.

You'll want to:

  • Take the back panel off (it uses regular phillips screws), pull off the heat shield and replace the thermal compound with better thermal compound. Doing so increased performance for me dramatically.
  • Update the BIOS (there are a TON of fixes that fix annoying problems like refusal to boot if the battery is below 15% charge and stopping charging when the battery is full and letting it drain overnight).
  • Get one of these cases. They are really nice: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0749NX47V

Hi, I would really like to use this hub with my pocket but after learning about the Pocket's C port problem I would rather not buy it before being sure it works. Can anyone please confirm if it does?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071CLCJ95

Also, I kept searching for another 3.0 hub that sticks right on the side of the Pocket, to keep it handheld while improving I/O, and found these, I thought others would like to see them. The links are the best deal in the site for the Item. I don't own them but I understand that the 3.0 is not as unreliable.

In terms of portability/ergonomics, I believe the Go has only three available angles of its kickstand whereas the Pro has an unlimited number.

I mention this because you were contemplating its use as an actual laptop. Even the Pro can be tricky on an actual lap. I've used this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FDQYM4P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

which gives great stability, but only one angle of usage.

That said, you might look at the Pro 6 since its price has dropped considerably as the release of the Pro 7 draws closer.

I just bought the Pro 6 and am very satisfied. It rocks Linux (with jakeday kernel) and it wouldn't cost much more than P2 Max--though I wish I had a Max as well :)

Liliputing mentioned that usb-c hub + display out (HDMI?) works in Windows, so the device should be supporting usb-c alt mode

Do you have a usb-c hub with display out? Test if it works in Linux?

There are some hubs that have dual display out (simultaneous independent extended modes, not just mirrored), wonder if it's works in om3

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07FJLYZJC/ (this one says it supports 12v on the USB c PD passthrough)

I've seen two other hubs that support dual display (simu independent extended modes), but they didn't list what voltage they support. OEM charger only supports 12v? If u use another charger (9V), it should be fine because device itself supports 5/9/12V)

Most of the other hubs with dual ports do not support simu independent extended modes (usually only mirrored mode, both ports show the same display)

Got one! Thank you. Its for the iPad 4 or 5 and my OMY3s fits perfectly. Here is the Amazon link and thank you for the great advice.

It's just giving you USB-A ports, but I've had good luck with https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M3NOFXQ . Ethernet adapters and flash drives go through it fine.

It also might help to get the July 5th BIOS from http://www.gpd.hk/news.asp?id=1519&selectclassid=002002 .

It's a great case and fits the pocket perfectly! I put the charger brick and USB C cable in the little pouch in the front. Perfect size!

Mine is similar, I have this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0196JB1ZS/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&sr=1-10&tag=ianker-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0196JB1ZS&keywords=iPhone+6+Charger&qid=1499292450&kwr_id=673 which is the older version of this https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Premium-Charger-PowerPort-Delivery/dp/B01D8C6ULO/ref=sr_1_7?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1502259184&sr=1-7&keywords=anker+usb+c that actually supports USB-PD (from comments: According to the labeling on the device, it supports USB Power Delivery with outputs 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 3A, 15V @ 2A, and 20V @ 1.5A.).

But look at your specs:

Input :AC 100-240V ~ 1.7A 50 - 60Hz
Quick Charge 3.0 Output :3.6-6.5V=3A, 6.5-9V=2A, 9-12V=1.5A
PowerIQ Output :5V=4.8A (2.4A Max Per Port)
Size :102 x 75 x 28mm / 4.0 x 3.0 x 1.1in
Weight :205g / 7.2oz

(Qualcomm) Quick Charge is not compatible with USB-PD so you can throw those specs out the window (Anker chargers a bit weird in that they have their own mix of supported specs on different ports). PowerIQ are 2.4A each max, so drawing 2A is close to your expected max.

At the 5V that PowerIQ puts out, it would have to be 3A per port for it to get USB-PD fast charge speeds but it can only put out 2.4A.

For cables, 5A cables seem to be the latest best high end multi-use cables you can get (although I havent actually seen a device that goes over 3A yet). Like https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=9SIA2VT5WB4585 and https://www.amazon.com/RND-Charging-MacBook-OnePlus-Samsung/dp/B06WWN898Y.

[Edit] Remove comment about blue ports, blue ones are QC but all of them are Power IQ.

[Edit 2] Looking up QC vs USB-PD it seems Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 is now USB-PD compatible.

I highly recommend the Zero, they are relatively cheap, decent battery life, and work great for a quick gaming fix. Looks really sweet next to the GPDP too :) I also keep a Buffalo SNES controller in my bag for those times I need a full sized controller https://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-iBuffalo-Classic-Gamepad-BSGP815GY/dp/B06XWD8QQJ

fn + esc works on mine to slow the fan.

I had problems with my charger not working, but the guy who sold me mine had put a 3rd party Anker charger in instead of the original.

Most chargers I've gotten don't charge it, but I bought one that works perfectly:

USB C Charger with 45W Power Delivery USB-C and 5V 2.4A Port 57W USB Wall Charger for MacBook, iPhone Xs Max/XR/ 8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S9/S8/Note8, Dell XPS, HP Spectre X360 and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0759LFT92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_OGy5Cb23M60ZV

Incidentally, it only seems to charge with cords that go from the usb-c slot to the usb-c slot of my onemix. cords that go from the regular usb slot to usb-c won't charge it.

I did because of the coupon code 07GEEKBUY: 50 USD off 700. Start with https://www.geekbuying.com/item/One-Netbook-One-Mix-2S-Yoga-Pocket-Laptop-M3-8100Y-8GB-256GB-Silver-406887.html get the protective case and the screenprotector (693.91), add some filler, you'll end up between 650-655 and you got the stylus, too. Killer deal.

The specs are only slightly below the new Macbook Air, for example. It runs a 8210Y, this runs a 8100Y, minimal difference. Even the new Retina @ 227 PPI can't match the 324 PPI of a 7" WUXGA screen. The Air is 8GB RAM, (it's configurable to 16GB). It has a PCIe SSD too but I have no doubts the one in the Air is faster on paper, in practice, as we discussed often on /r/thinkpad and elsewhere, for almost all tasks an SSD is an SSD, you'd need to do heavy I/O to feel the difference and noone will video edit on the One Mix 2s. The Air is only clear superior in having Thunderbolt. But at half the size and half the price I will live. More people will be positively affected by the One Mix 2 having a 3.5" headphone jack and a mini HDMI than negatively by the USB C port lacking Thunderbolt capability. That mini HDMI means, for example, you can get a second 7" 1920x1200 monitor, there are these field monitors for 130 bucks ready for tripod screws so you can mount the monitor on any tiny tripod. Without that you'd need to resort to finicky USB C to HDMI converters or find a 7" monitor with a DP or USB C input which is not easy. It's really awesome.

I got this cable to simultaneously charge and extend my display to an ultrawide monitor and it works great! As a bonus, the cable also work as an extension charging cable in a pinch! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078M57FVJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

UPDATE: The above Anker link works for charging the GPD Pocket but its USB-C port doesnt officially have USB PD support.

The following Anker device is the newer version, a bit more expensive, and officially supports USB PD (I have no idea if that will actually translate to faster charging times than the previous version linked above): New Anker with USB PD

I'm a little confused by your question. Wifi, cellular radios that use SIMs and ethernet are very different things. You're very likely not going to be able to reuse an internal wifi antenna for cellular.

Someone on this sub has already posted about using a cheap usb wifi card with a better antenna for much improved speeds:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comments/8wmc7u/external_usb_wifi_is_much_faster_than_internal/

If you do need cell service, consider one of those wifi hotspots for whatever carrier you use.

And if you do need ethernet, usb 3.1 is very fast (5 or 10 Gbps) so a usb c dongle could probably handle all the throughput your house has without being a bottle neck.
