Also seconding the use of a pocket field recorder, such as the kind used for note-taking in meetings. I bought a Sony one for $60, but you can get the ~$30 version on Amazon, as well as the external stereo mic that plugs in. It'll make you sound so much better, vs the internal mic on the unit.

For home use, and USB interface, I'm partial to the Rode line. I've heard real good things about the NT-USB, but I would order direct from the manufacturer, as there's a note that some Amazon Rode mics are not authentic.

If you really want to step up the game, get a semi-professional portable field recorder. I use a Tascam DR-44WL. It's got two built-in stereo mics oriented in X-Y fashion and two extra XLR inputs for plugging in more professional mics. I use mine mostly for sound effects and foley work. Although some have told me that this is a bit overkill for what I'm doing, (don't care!) And of course there's always more serious hardware and the prices go up from here.
Good luck!

So for recording with my Samsung Note 5, I use the voice recorder app already on there. I've never had an issue with it. I use the Stony Edge Lapel Mic, which just plugs into your headphone jack for anything with the phone now. Haven't done a commute ramble with it yet, but I will.

For other recording purposes, I use a Blue Yeti Blackout Edition, and have a Blue Microphones Snowball USB Microphone, Cardioid Mode(Gloss Black) for mobile use (i.e. traveling). I have a generic pop filter I picked up at a music store, and a DR Pro Tripod Mic Stand with Telescoping Boom for streaming and recording at home.

The Yeti is a pretty popular mid-price mic for GWA peeps. Snowball is a GREAT starter mic though. My dream mic is a toss up between the Shure SM7B and the AT2035 (both please?)

For desktop recording/editing, a lot of people use Audacity, which is what I started with. I now use Reaper Pro to record, and Izotope RX6 for editing.

Something large diaphragm condenser. It'll give you the ability to pick up the subtle nuances of your voice and usually has a larger dynamic range than a small diaphragm condenser or any other type of mic (minus a great ribbon mic). The drawback is a lower SPL (loudness). So just don't go trying to mic and electric guitar amp.

In a field where mics can cost from a couple of dollars to tens of thousands...

I'd recommend the Audio Technica AT2020. It's a great entry level mic with a great range and decent SPL. It also comes in a USB model as well.

Additionally, any mic for recording should be used with a good pop filter. You can even make one.

Former audio engineer.

EDIT (Nov 26) All of the above was typed on my phone late at night where links are difficult to do (and I was falling asleep).

Here's the AT2020 and the USB Model

Additionally, the v67g is a great mic. I used to own one but gave it to a friend.

  • "Diggity dope" is the best thing I've heard all week, bless you. And it IS gonna be diggity dope, not just for the wrestling, but because my boyfriend is always entertaining when he gets into it. Bless him.
  • LOOK OUT ROAD, HERE COMES LOTTIE! BEEP BEEP MOTHERFUCKERS. And also look out oven, you're gonna be baking some goddamn brownies aaaaah yes good yum.
  • This is the mic I got! I wanted to get a blue ice one but I couldn't afford it. My boyf has one though.
  • Pets given! Tail wags received in exchange!

If you want to be able to record your voice and the sound of you masturbating, I would say get an omnidirectional mic or two dynamic microphones. If you want to just record your voice, I'd say get a dynamic microphone. A couple of people have recommended Audio Technica, Samson, and Rode mics. Those are pretty good. Also check out the Shure SM58-X2u or the Shure SM57-X2u. Watch out for counterfeit Shure mics though. Apparently they're pretty common.

It can only be the least listened to because your work is truly for the connoisseur.

Anyone who, like me, is a fan of dragon tales from Beowulf to the sexy/hilarious Dragonkin series would be all over this!

Your accent is marvelous. It gives the dragon's voice an atmosphère d'une histoire ancienne.

Sound effects are seamless. Extraordinary quality.

Please tell me, what are the last three words spoken? After joys of dragon flight?

The traditional Hitachi has always been prone to electrical fires, and it sounds that yours would get grounded based on the exposed wires you described. Sucks, but at least you're safe!

If I could make a recommendation, this version of the magic wand is a fantastic alternative and the battery-life is unbelievable. I've always found the original wand to be overly aggressive in the low setting. This one, though still a third-party device and not from Hitachi, still has more nuance and available settings, and can deliver the power when you need it.

I know a lot of us are in the habit of recommending the Blue Yeti?

I also know that the Blue Yeti has a known issue with its USB Ports and I've had a bunch of friends have their Yeti's break and lose weeks of recording time for repairs <_<;;; So as often as people here recommend the Yeti, I actually want to recommend you stay away from it :\

I used a Samson G-Track as a USB mic for months when I got started here, and I really liked it, it's in the same price range as a Yeti (like 100$) and I really liked the way it picked up my voice :D
